Avalanche Ranch is one of my absolute favorite hot Springs in Colorado. They have cute little wagons, tiny houses and cabins to stay in. They have 3 different pools and one wooden tub. The view from the hot springs over the mountains is just incredible. The whole estate is so beautiful and very family friendly. Make sure to book your accommodations at least half a year in advance in order to reserve your stay. The employees are very nice. They also have a fish pond and you can borrow for free fishing rods. They also have animals. There is just so much to explore. It's great for kids. Plus they don't really have wifi other than in the reception. read more

Seeking a little "treat yo'self" post hike relaxing, my hiking companion and I made our way to Avalanche Ranch to indulge in a little soak and self-care. There's so much to love about Avalanche Ranch: 1) Views on views! The 3 hot springs are situated to make great use of the landscape and offer some epic views of Mount Sopris. I chose to stay in the hotter 2 pools during my visit, and it was delightful. 2) They offer a limited number of soak passes per day; which means you get a really relaxing intimate experience. 3) If you're in the mood for a little pampering, they do offer massages! Totally work the indulgence. The therapist takes the time to get to know your specific body needs and helps work out all the knots and kinks. 4) They offer up a variety of accommodations on-site for those that are seeking more of a retreat type experience. Apparently, we booked our massage and soak the same day as AppleFest. While that could be a lovely experience full of pot luck goodies and folk music, it was a bit frustrating to not have been told in advance. Parking was pretty full upon arrival, and it was packed when we left. Oof. Just not prepared for all that during this visit. All in all, Avalanche Ranch was a great way to loosen up some sore stiff muscles. I'd easily make my way back to indulge again. **Pro Tip: Feeling peckish? Love Avalanche ranch. We just stayed for a third time and we are excited for our next trip! The area gives you a tranquil oasis to relax in. The cabins are great because many come with kitchens to make a meal or you can go into redstone for some delicious dinners. Chuck one of the owners greeted so many patrons and it was incredible to see how kind he was with everyone. He thanked them for coming to stay which goes a long way. LOVED being able to bring our dog and so many other people did this trip as well. I saw some reviews complaining about the farm animals. This place is LITERALLY called Avalanche ranch. A quick look would tell you what to expect. Growing up on a farm myself it was awesome to be "on the farm" again and be able to go for walks to see the sheep, horses and chickens. I would also like to prove CORRECT information for a couple of reviews. 1) dog poop is not everywhere, dog bags were provided when we arrived to our cabin AND there are more beside the lodge if needed. It was very well kept. 2) as I already pointed out service is always fantastic here. 3) we had massages during one of our stays and it was wonderful. one of the best either of us have had. Friend/romantic weekend getaway! It's fun to meet a group of friends somewhere amazing but even more amazing when we can have our own cabin! Most cabins have a small kitchen you can cook your own food, just read the descriptions closely. Avalanche Ranch has cabins for big groups and small groups, kid friendly and pet friendly! The walk to their hot springs is a short one and there are four different pools/tubs to choose from! The people who work there are friendly and the views spectacular! The closest city is Carbondale and we enjoyed eating there a couple times. I highly recommend this special place, especially during the winter! We can't wait to schedule for the summer! read more

I must say, thanks to Sarah. An older review but was so well written, and I hope I remembered her name correctly. I was the "operations manager/maintenance do-it-all," for a very nice B & B in Curtis Park in Denver, for about 5 years. One pic from Sarah says it all --the top of that heater mounted at the bottom of the wall. If you won't replace something that obvious and disgusting, probably about $45 dollars new, you sure as hell ain't gonna chase down mice/critter access points, mis-fit doors, parking lot access, heat/plumbing problems, etc. Just a quick thought -- every one of those cabins needs a ceiling fan just to spread the heat around. And window screens. But wait, then they're not "rustic" anymore. Depends how you define rustic I suppose. This is a picture proof positive of: "somebody else can, and should, and promised, and never even scheduled it, and so here we are." Can you imagine what a black light inside those cabins would show? Don't think about it, you will wreck your dreams tonight. Dealing with the public nowadays (we quit 12 years ago) is a pain in the ass, because you have to allow so many more people in to make any $ at all. More people =more goofballs=more substance abusers=more nitwits. Alas, the "Great people"/"A-hole" per guest ratio keeps trending in a definite negative direction, and has for the last 10 years. Or more. Plus now, the regular old-time A-hole (dog shit on the lawn, piss in the pools, noisy music, let's see what isn't nailed down since this place is so damn expensive) is now even a bigger A-hole. Blame whomever, you know it's true. So kinda keeping the place up without losing the battle equals spending more and more money. Which sometimes you have to borrow, as we did. I very much doubt you will find a quiet solitary peaceful moment in those pools, particularly on the weekends. I take that back, maybe in the winter when it's 25 below. And no daily dog turd collection? On the entire grounds? Take one staff member all of 20 minutes. Once you catch up that is. And doing that might take 3 hours. And don't even think of supplying dog do bags unless guests ask. Provide dispensers with bags and young generation A-hole will clean it out 3 or 4 times a week guaranteed. Oldsters too actually. And all other generations now that I think about it. Our B and B got away without experiencing the majority of the above abuse because we had 8 high priced, stunning rooms including a restored 150 year old carriage house, high thread count, British carpeting, coffered ceilings, Ralph Lauren paints, etc. with no pets allowed. Or kids. Or pool. Or hot tub except for 3 months. Whence we recycled the leaky POS, never to return. 8 rooms, profit wise, wasn't enough in the end. Nation wide recessions were a monster, but still gotta keep the lights on and the place warmed up. Turn off the heat and it would take 2 days for the interior to really warm up. We had one month with 6 guests total. And we also messed up by having a real genuine chef come in to make custom breakfasts for the guests. All of those chefs, had, um...light fingers if I might state it delicately. Without exception. Poor maid thought her work was lousy, since she never "received" a tip. And the waste and disappearance of food? Damn. Let no friend of the chef ever suffer a single pang of hunger! Add water to the mix? Impossible. Just making sure the water and surrounding pools are clean and healthy. With that volume of people in and out? Ain't happening, unless you got a large fairly well paid and supervised crew. Throw in kids with toys and balloons and other celebratory bullshit, maintenance time goes up. Quick. Yet. If you truly deeply cared ... You would quickly refund, or offer other decent stuff for weather related cancellations. If you will absolutely NOT, that means that your finances are shot. You have that constant heavy nut, which WILL NOT let you delay or offer refunds because of weather. You want to generate to quick nasty reviews? Can't think of a better way. Oh, we tried the DVD thing also. Gave that stupid nice-ness up pronto: buying DVDs and watching them get stolen right and left. One guest took 60 movies "home" with them, claiming they would return them after they watched them. Fine. We charged their card $300. DVDs came back. Future policy: One DVD per night. Period. The end. So. I "weave" a bit, yet it is all true. The heyday of Hot Springs was about 30 years ago. Glenwood Springs? Yikes, just to be one among a thousand ... Iron Springs? Ehhh ... Strawberry Springs? I hiked up there with a buddy of mine back in the 60's, and there was nobody there. My friend owned a rundown mining type crapcan 100 year old house in downtown Aspen. Da good old days. Think New Mexico has some mostly unpopulated Hot Springs. A beautiful place, it's too bad it's not one of the United States of Merica. As I said, a truthful weave. read more

My husband and I were at Avalanche Ranch in late March and booked #14 which is called Route 66 at about $205 night. Our check in and parking went smoothly, although we did notice lots of dog poop around the property (a reminder to bring a flashlight for nighttime!). The cabin looked cute, like an old mining cabin, from the outside. The inside was somewhat quaint, but definitely not comfortable and the shower was something to avoid. We went to the hot springs, which were nice with a beautiful view, but crowded enough that we didn't feel comfortable getting in and out to try different temperatures. The night in the cabin was really awful. Neither one of us slept. It was a cold night and the wind and cold air seeped through cracks in the windows and around the door, which has a huge gap at the top. The heater worked, but not for the main area. It send lots of heat up to the loft, where the bed is, but that made it uncomfortably hot. We tried fans and opening the window upstairs, but to no avail. It was either freezing or boiling hot. The bed was uncomfortably lumpy and the futon on the main floor was also difficult to sit or sleep on. After a sleepless night, we decided we just couldn't do another night there (we had booked two nights). When I went to the front office to explain, the lady said that she would give us our money back if they could rebook it, but that was untrue, since they close for booking that close to the open date. All in all, I would recommend people go for the experience and view of the mountains, but skip the accommodations. read more

This place is a unique gem... so much to love! The hot springs are wonderful... they clean out the pools on Wednesdays, so best to soak mid/end week vs Mon/Tues. The mountain view is truly breathtaking (especially in the fall)! I recommend the cabins on the top row (cabins 1-7), they are the most spacious! The only reason I didn't give AR 5 stars was because I felt the cabins & lodge could be cleaner... I saw a few mice running around and there were cobwebs & dust in the cabins. Just seems like a good weekly cleaning would go a long way! Lastly- The place is dog-friendly... we brought our 2 pups & they were in heaven playing with the staff's dogs & other guests' furry companions. read more

What a wonderful hot springs experience we had. My daughter "found" this place and wanted to try it so we made reservations and came a few weeks later. We had no problems finding it. There is a small parking lot and we got a spot right away. Then we checked in with the office and they gave us a paper bracelet to identify we were paid visitors to the pools. We found several lounge chairs and put our towels on them. There are not alot of lounge chairs but we hardly sat in them, except to take a quickie rest and snack. We spent most of our time in the pools. There are three basic pools on three levels.........plus a little known barrel hot tub in a cabin above the highest pool. You get to that cabin via a small path outside the uppermost pool. (there is a small treehouse/platform near that cabin) It seems that the coolest pool is on the first level and has a cute waterfall entering it that you can swim/sit under. Most families and small kids were in that pool. The second pool up was the warmest and the uppermost one was in between. That was the one we spent most of our time at. From each pool you get a great view of the mountains and you can sit there all day and view the mts except you get too hot and need to take a break from the warmth. They do not sell food but you can bring your own food and drink (don't know about alcoholic beverages though) There is a "necessary" room (unisex toilet) within a few feet of the lowest pool and two dressing rooms available to shower and dress and store items in the cubbies. They only permit 15 people to use the pools during each day session. Thus reservations are very necessary to get a spot to use the pools. Those staying in the cabins on the premises get to use the pools whenever they want to, day or night. There are lodgings scattered throughout but its fun to see the odd lodgings and wagons. All throughout there are fun items to see such as the old claw foot bathtub and tin animals. Overall, Avalanche Ranch is a great place to spend some time relaxing in the hot tubs. Perhaps I'll stay there next time and stay in one of their cabins AND enjoy unlimited hot pools. Word of advice is that you really really have to make reservations way ahead to get the lodging you want, or even to secure a place in their day use of the hot pools. It will all be worth it. We totally had a great time. read more

I'd been looking at this place (specifically the wagon rentals) for a couple years now and was super stoked to be out this way for Valentine's weekend. Although the cabins/wagons were all full I was happy to snag a reservation for the morning (9AM-1PM). The location was easy to find and I was elated to be greeted by a herd of sheep near the parking area (there was also a flock of chickens in the distance). Although we weren't allowed to pet them I was content to observe them in this serene environment. Check-in took place in the gift store which I greatly enjoyed perusing (lots of nice lotions, country knick-knacks, shirts, etc.). After reviewing/signing a brief waiver we were on our way. I recommend bringing your own towel/bathing suit to avoid the rental fees for those items though I appreciate that they are available. I also recommend bringing a water bottle (plastic only) to stay hydrated - no glass allowed. There were his/hers changing rooms with cubbys as well as a shower (ladies shower was out of order which made me sad). There was also a one person restroom which featured some nice rungs for hanging clothes as well as a ceiling heater. I actually ended up changing in here since the ladies changing area was completely full.. There were 4 different bodies of hot water to choose from (3 pools and 1 tub) though my favorite was a wooden tub located in a quaint wooden structure. It was a little more secluded and relaxed (there were half dozen children in the lower pools). I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was able to tolerate even the hottest pool they had (about 104 degrees). Typically I am not able to fully submerse myself in a conventional hot tub for more than a few moments. Overall we had a great time. I'd be curious to return and stay in a wagon as well as enjoy the hot springs in the evening. read more

Our first visit here, but we have visited nearly all the hot springs in Colorado. This one is one of our new favs and we will be back to stay in one of the wagons (they were all booked up four weeks out). These hot springs were quiet with a wide range of temperatures. Bathing suits are required. Pools and grounds were all very well kept, unlike other private hot springs that are old and run down. The staff members were incredibly friendly and we loved seeing all the old barns and barn animals that greeted us at the front. Such a quiet, well kept, and quaint place of solitude. read more

The people who run Avalanche Ranch are wonderful, and the cabins are really nice. The waters, however, the real reason we came here, had a slimy, smelly consistency that we just couldn't get used to. Maybe we had been spoiled by the superior waters of Ouray. I always felt like I needed to take a shower after getting out of the hot pools. Also, and this is not the fault of the property owners, there was a solitary creepy guy in the pool, drinking wine out of a glass bottle at 8am, who kept his back turned toward us most of the time. We just left. There's green algae in the water, which may be the source of the slimy feel and the smell. Full points for the cabins, but I don't see us returning because of the pools. read more

I made a reservation for Friday July 5th, when I arrived the nice lady at the front desk apologized that the room had been double booked. She then got the manager and the manager told me that I was wrong and the reservation was for June 5. I knew that wasn't true because i called in May and specifically asked for a Friday reservation. June 5 was a Wednesday so it's not possible that I would have done that. Plus over the phone when i originally made it someone had said how nice it would be to come over 4th of July weekend. I just didn't appreciate being lied to and told I was wrong by management when the first desk agent had already admitted to over booking She then rudely told me that it's a good thing I live in Glenwood and just to go home. Even more than all of that...I had called earlier in the day to confirm the reservation and get check in information and it was confirmed that I had a reservation for today July 5. I cannot believe the manager Lied like that - and tried to blame me for the mix up. Very disappointing. The manager would barely look me in the eye as she blatantly lied to my face. Just hoping her boss sees at least one of these reviews that I am leaving, because it is very rude and unprofessional to treat paying guests like that. read more

Heaven on Earth! My husband and I stayed a day and a night while passing through the area in mid-September. I would definitely love to go back and stay for at least 3 days! We stayed in the Shepherd's Wagon and I had one of the best, coziest night's sleep I've had in a while. My husband said he was very comfortable and slept well too. (Snuggle city!) The hot springs were glorious and the hike we took was just breathtakingly beautiful. So glad we stopped here! read more

In my opinion, don't waste your money purchasing gift certificates here.  And don't expect a quiet  private hot springs experience to come with your 3 night minimum $600, or more, cabin rental fee.  They allow day use passes for visitors, and on two of the 5 weekends I've spent at Avalanche Ranch there were children's birthday parties being held at the hot springs.  While very cute, excited screaming children are not very relaxing, and the pools are not very big, so my group abandoned the hot springs until after 5pm when the day pass visitors had to leave.  Regarding the gift certificates, there is a one year expiration date which they conveniently will not disclose upfront before you purchase the gift certificate, and they will not budge on.  I had purchased two $200 gift certificates for two friends as wedding gifts.  One of them had expired last year and I contacted the manager begging for an extension on the gift certificate, explaining she was unable to make it to the ranch during the one year the gift certificate was valid not out of disinterest but because she became pregnant 4 months after her wedding and had a difficult pregnancy.  I was horrified by Molly, the manager's, response which was that "she didn't see how it was her fault my friend didn't use the gift card" and that "if I had bought her a salad bowl for her wedding and she broke it, would I expect the store to replace it".  The gift card expired, unused, and Avalanche Ranch was keeping the $200 I had paid, end of story.  In addition Molly refused to extend the validity of the other $200 gift card, which currently is still valid, when I explained my friend was a doctor at Children's Hospital and was unable to utilize the gift card right now due to not wanting to unnecessarily expose herself or others to COVID.    Molly thought she was extending a huge courtesy explaining she wouldn't extend the validity, but my friend just needed to reserve a room by the time it expired.  Seeing as the global pandemic is not disappearing anytime soon, this of course was no help whatsoever.  I had always enjoyed my time at Avalanche Ranch, but this appalling customer service can not be overlooked.  In my opinion, as well as seeing the other reviews people have left regarding AR's management, this business does not care about their patrons' experience at all as long as they continue to stay booked and make money regardless.  I will be giving all of my future business to Merrifield Cabins and Hotsprings and to Antero Hotsprings.  Their properties are beautiful, the hot springs are actually private, they both offer gift cards with NO expiration dates, and the managers are not nonsensical brats. read more

My partner and I spent one night at Avalanche Ranch and we had a blast! We stayed in a covered wagon and loved the secluded "glamping" experience. We recommend it to everyone. We didn't expect so many free activities at the location, but they offered fishing poles, a canoe, volleyball, etc...and of course, the hot spring pools were fantastic. We took the last available room called, Covered Wagon. We were coming off from extended back-country skiing trip and wanted some place to soak our sore bodies enroute to Ouray. Staffs were wonderful. The ranch is quite rustic and so was the wagon. Glamorous camping is the best way to describe it, for sure. The hot springs was perfect! Not so much for the other wagons, but the proximity to bathroom from covered wagon was quite inconvenient. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because I hate that there were so many dog poop on the premises; even on the women's changing room door. read more

The family here is super accommodating and nice, but honestly that's just icing on the cake. Guys, there are three hot water pools with varying levels of heat. The view is amazing and the atmosphere is so relaxed. Also, this same family raises cows that are part of Carbondale's local/sustainable food chain- which I'm a big fan of. read more

Just wanted to let everyone know that every time we have tried to stay here, it ends poorly. We were one out way over and got a phone call from the manager. We have two WELL behaved border collies. The website said they accepted pets.. we even paid $35 extra on top of $195 per night. The owner decided that "she wasn't comfortable" with our dogs sleeping in our CAR and canceled the reservation just 2 hours before we arrived. Very poor customer service. Oh my lord this place was amazing and beautiful! Perfect getaway with your loved one or even by yourself. We stayed in the gypsy wagon and it was a dream. Super cute and comfortable and very affordable . Right next to the hot springs and bathroom. The hot springs were amazing, open all night long and very serine. This expansive Redstone property is located on the opposite side of the highway as the beautiful Crystal River. The owners have an interesting story of how the springs were located and tapped to create 3 gorgeous natural hot spring pools. The pools are lovely, with varying temperatures. We enjoyed the feel of the pebble bottoms, mountain views, and overflow of water cascading into the adjacent pools. The pools easily get a 5 star and I highly recommend the day pass to enjoy them. For lodging, we won't be back. We stayed 3 nights at $160/night and looked forward to preparing homemade meals at the cabin. The small kitchen set up includes plenty of utensils, a sink, fridge, small stove . . . and mice! Yes, two mice found our second evening as we were putting away the dishes. One dead, one not so dead. Yes it's the woods, but still, finding mice in the cooking supplies is unpleasant. Overall, the property is a bit of a mix. On one hand, the owners offer generous extras for their guests including a diverse selection of DVDs (no TV in the room, but you can rent one), a stocked trout pond, and free long distance phone calls from the lodge. On the other hand, the rustic theme too often crosses into dilapidated territory. The cabin itself felt oppressive to us, with overwhelming red decor (curtains, duvet cover, dishes, paintings). For the first time, I can understand why bulls become agitated with the color red. The clawfoot tub scored big points and we appreciated the wide selection of teas and eco-friendly soaps and shampoos. Upon check out, a lady with a big smile asked how our stay was. I told her about the two mice and oddly, her smile changed only in that it became wider and more strained as she explained it's the woods and these things happen. Yes, we know it's the woods, but putting on a happy face on an unpleasant experience didn't help our discomfort. Perhaps an alternative response would be to offer a free day pass to the pools on a return trip. Nothing too extravagant, but some offering and acknowledgement would have concluded our stay on a more positive note. That said, it is still a clearly very special place with much creative thought and worth a trip for the pools. read more

Close enough to Denver that is doesn't feel like work to get there but far enough away that you can be at peace in the wilderness, under the stars. The staff was kind and courteous, and were willing to do most anything to make their guests happy. My husband and I have visited avalanche ranch over a dozen times. We love the hot springs and the cabins. The owners are amazing and overall this place is wonderful. After an overnight stay this past weekend my rating went down. We stayed in one of the "wagons" and it was awful. The hot springs are open to overnight guests 24/7 but there are quiet hours. At midnight after laying awake because of the large group of young people screaming and cannon balling into the lower pool I went to the office to ask them to help. A man said he would talk to the group. At 2 am they finally stopped yelling. It was truly awful. And this has now happened both times we stayed in the wagon. I would not suggest staying in the wagon near the pools at all! In addition to being up all night, the staff never asked about it the next day or offered any discount for the night. My suggestion is, even though the prices have gone up significantly, stay in a cabin away from the pools. read more

What a find! Took a weekend getaway trip up here in September and was not disappointed. The owners pay extra attention to detail to make your stay as pleasant as possible. One of their dogs played with my dog and even stayed in my cabin for dinner! She was a sweetheart. On day two my gas stove wasn't working and the owners daughter took my pizza back to the main house to cook it for me - and for the inconvenience she gave me some free jam! I will definitely be back here - great deals too during the low season. read more
