Extremely Disappointed - Terrible Experience with the Mother's Day Package I purchased the Full-Time Mom Mother's Day package for my wife at Avalon Spa and Salon, expecting a relaxing and luxurious experience. What we got instead was a nightmare. The package included an Aromatherapy Massage, Shellac Nails, Avalon Pedicure, and "The Finale" (a conditioning treatment, shampoo, haircut, and blow-dry style). However, when my wife arrived for her scheduled appointment, she was told she was only scheduled for a haircut. How does a full spa package get reduced to just a haircut? Even worse, the haircut was so poorly done that she had to return a second time to try and fix it -- and her hair was still damaged. She has not received the aromatherapy massage to this day, and no one has followed up to reschedule or offer a solution. The nails were also a disaster. She said they looked unprofessional and believes the technicians may not be properly trained. When she tried to speak to a manager about all of this, she was told there was no manager available. This has been one of the worst customer service experiences we've ever had. For a place that advertises itself as a luxury spa, this was anything but. Unprofessional, disorganized, and a complete letdown. I absolutely do not recommend Avalon Spa and Salon. read more

Although I appreciate the gentleman not just making my mom spend money he didn't think was worth it. But not how he handled the situation. He told her she did not need the color she wanted because she wasn't young like her daughter. Then followed with because of you they didn't book the afternoon for me. Yet - he was the one that didn't want to do the services. Don't blame her. Still charged $95 for haircut and blow dry. Which by the way she has super short hair. I told her she should have just left! A really nice spa experience overall. Super clean, nice friendly staff and lots of services for your needs: massage, manicure, pedicure, hair, skin treatments and more. I had received the manicure, pedicure, and 30-minute massage package for Christmas so I decided to use it this weekend. Body Massage: I got a nice 30-minute massage with Stephanie. She worked on my back, shoulders, neck and arms. I didn't realize how tight my body had got until she started to really work on it. I would highly recommend you book with her. $50 Pedicure: Unlike the typical nail salons, Avalon has these booth style seats with pillows and large TVs in front. The service itself was great. They are very thorough in cleaning up cuticles and dry skin and polish evenly. $38 I would say that this spa is great for special occasions or gifts or treating yourself to something more than just your typical manicure. It can get pretty pricey, but you are paying for what you get. I would go again for some of their skin treatment services!! read more

I had an appointment with "Robert" and he was great. He was very professional, courteous and friendly. I was finally able to get a PROPER fade. I was very happy with the job he did and when I asked for a beard trim, he was VERY up front and told me he didn't have the experience for it. I went to see Linda for a hair cut on the recommendation of a co-worker -- and she did a great job. My cut is fantastic, and she was very nice. She was running late so styled/straightened my hair without charging for the extra service. She also told me if I needed bangs trimmed or anything, she'd do it at no cost. She didn't try to sell me anything additional -- which I love. She was VERY talky, though, so her personally 4. It was worth it for the great cut, but if you prefer not to tell your life story while getting your hair done, you may want to see someone else. Everyone I saw getting their hair done there had great cuts, so I feel confident in saying this is a salon I can recommend! read more

Was really excited to go...and came home really disappointed.Had a gift certificate for a massage, Mani & pedi. Massage felt great but she went over the allotted time and charged me without even asking. However,the Mani/pedi was a comple te offensive ridiculous mess!!I chose a blue shellac n the girl kept looking at me like & asking if I wanted another color. I wanted blue to support Autism awareness month n had to somehow justify to her my color choice. Even after I told her my son was autistic she insisted I reconsider.. I didn't. She talked about how autism was genetic & I kept telling her no one in my family has it....on and on talking she left my nails w lumps of polish. She wanted me to come back the next day to fix it because her next appointment was there! Really drive another 55+ miles to be offended NO THANKS! I came for an eyebrow waxing and shaping and I absolutely loved it! Maria did my eyebrows and she transformed my brows into a very nice shape and it completely changed my look, I feel. She knew how to shape them to my face and did not make them thin (which I LOVE) and arched them just enough to frame my face better. My brows look so nice and clean; I am very happy with the results. I have attended this salon twice. I would say it is average. An average salon is fine unless the salon thinks of itself as the top of the line and charges as if it is the top of the line. I have gotten good color and ok cuts here, and one ok brow waxing and one good one. Both the brow waxings were overpriced. The problem is that they are not as professional as they could be or claim to be. I had to tell the person cutting my hair that she needed to use razor scissors to cut my hair. I am not a professional stylist, this is just something I have learned from too many bad haircuts. I should be able to tell my stylist what look I want but not have to tell them what technique they should use. The weird thing is that the first time I had my hair cut the stylist told me she usually asks people if they want the razor scissors. This is weird, why should the customer make that decision? You should know the look the customer wants and how to get it. Also, usually when I go to the salon, I like the chance to be able to chat and not to have to listen to another person complain about her life and job, but that was my experience. Also, I complained that I was dissatisfied with my brow wax but I didn't want it redone because that always worries me (that they will take too much off), but I wasn't offered a discount or anything. That's frustrating when the wax costs $20. Many of the good people who worked here left (at least three stylists in the last year or two). I am going to check them out soon. read more

I came here for a pedicure during the last month of my pregnancy...getting my feet into the pedicure station was treacherous-you have to climb onto a bench then scoot yourself into the right place! My pedicurist was nice and polite, but the job was not so great. It's all a bunch of show and no results...champagne and rose petals were put into the water and I still got out of there with rough heels. I will never come here again. read more

This place is AWFUL. Do not waste your money. Management is rude and unknowlegeable about hair. I've given them so many chances. I've loyally purchased products for years but I will not anymore. After having a hair disaster near lawsuit, they refunded about 2/3 of the 350 bill, AFTER they "fixed" their unfixeable mistake. They threw in a diff stylist in the end to take over, but her feelings clearly were hurt probably bc she didn't get much profit out of it. When I returned a year later to give the gal the shot she deserved by picking her as my stylist to begin with, for highlights, giving her much virgin hair to work with, and she would obviously be getting payed and a clean start, not someone elses mistake, she waited till I arrived to my appointment to tell me that she would not feel comfortable doing it bc of what happened a year ago and how she had to fix someone elses mistake and that she nearly lost her job with the possible lawsuit that was someone elses mistake. OK, she could have called me! -poor business move on her end. Management is the reason I will not return bc even tho she claims its management that was hard on her, she represents the salon and if she doesn't want the high end amount they charge, in her pocket (for the mediocre work), then clearly she took the whole ordeal as personal, and did not hold management responsible. I was going to settle for her since at least I've seen her work and I now live practically down the street from this Avalon salon, but I would definitely not deal here anymore, even with a different stylist bc this salon in awful, as I've stated already and it is not worth the risk of a different stylist screwing up. I gave her another shot bc she had to clean up someone elses mess last time, and even tho it was still awful and orange, i figured maybe shed do a good job with new growth. I am always in San Antonio for meetings, so it makes more sense to have better products from there used on my hair (Kerastase), and much better prices for better work! I usually don't even need an appintment! If you're picky about your hair, I'm sorry but you'll be disappointed with this salon if you have to be damn near lawsuit to get almost a complete refund. There is a sign that reads, "NO refunds on hair services." That should tell you enough. Don't buy their salesman pitch of "oh, we'll get it right and m ake you happy. you aren't done until you are happy, and I am happy." That's a crock of sh*t, don't beleieve it, bc when they screw it up and can't fix it, you will have to sue them for a refund and will be stuck with permanently over processed orange hair when you wanted beautiful beige highlights. I will continue to get hair done in San Antonio. No one does hair well in the Valley, except for 3 stylists. In the WHOLE valley! So if you're looking (i couldnt get an appt in time, sometimes need 2 be done weeks in advance around here) go to Harlingen Mall at JcPenny with Venessa (master stylist-has short blonde hair), Silvia at Modern Images (awesome! also in Harlingen), or Joaquin at Dillards Salon in McAllen ,tx. my husband requested an appointment and the person who was supposed to work on my hair, said he could not do a hair bun mignonne. I guess they did not even know what I was talking about. Show them pictures and it was terrible.They sent me to a woman, that not only did not know how to work on my hair, did an outdated hair do, caked me with hair spray and left me full of hair pins. I felt like washing my hair right there and to leave. They ignored my disappointment and charged me 80 dollars for a hair do plus the tip. Not only they are outdated, and also are not sincere in the services they offer. Is clear that we are not ever going back there. read more

Before I leave the valley, I have to review Avalon. I can only comment on the waxing services here. I've been to waxing places in Brownsville, McAllen, LA and sf Bay Area and the best waxes I've had have been at Avalon with Maria. She is so sweet, friendly and really super fast which, after cleanliness, is the number one most important thing for me. The one downside is that the waxing services here are more expensive than other areas of the country. I'd rather pay more for better services especially when it comes to waxing, but I've noticed this in general about waxing in Mcallen/Brownsville so it wasn't really a big deal when I was living here. read more

I got a waxing service done here. It was horrible, the lady left many spots with hair and the type of wax that was used (hot wax), while was less painful than cold wax, only broke my hair instead of pulling it from the root. I also think the esthetician needed more training. I have gotten this service done at another salon in El Paso, where I used to live, and this was nowhere near how great my past experiences have been. The salon itself is very nice, but the prices they charge for the mediocre services are just too high. read more

Very very dissatisfied with Avalon with respect to hair color. Asked for low lights, high lights & cut. 1) Hair cut so uneven it is extremely hard to even use a curling iron 2) Low lights were a total disaster I went in as a blonde & came out with pink, orange & brassy red all over 3) Worse of all the salon's response well maybe no one will notice (well maybe if it was Halloween) 4) Charged me $295 - I literally had to go to another salon to get my hair fixed which cost another $185 (but that was worth it) Will never return nor never recommend to anyone read more

Soon as I walked in, it was lovely till I came face to face with rude employees. Ignoring that I tried to still have a good experience and waited for my wax appointment. I was greeted by the women who would be doing my full Brazilian front to back and she seemed very nice. I was told to do the back it would be an extra $5 and I agreed. After she finished I went about my day only to find out in the evening that she not only left stay hairs but left large patches of hair on the front and also the back that I paid extra for and was still there. We booked a group of people for a birthday party on a not busy Saturday and left very disappointed! The massage therapists & estheticians were amazing and knowledgeable but the front desk staff was horrible! When we called and booked our services we didn't realize some of our party booked "add-ons" instead of a full facial and the staff didn't seem to find it important to tell us that. Going in there expecting to just get a simple mask & having a budget of $50 and leaving with a bill of over $200 was ridiculous! We could have made arrangements if we went in there knowing exactly what we were getting. They mixed up all our appointments and made adjustments that were way more expensive that we expected. No one in the front desk including the manager seemed to be bothered by what was happening. We were planning on going again next month for another event but will definitely not be after this! read more

It's a very dirty place. I've been to many spa's because I have a bad back and frequently need massages. This spa is by far one of the worst I've been too. I scheduled an appointment and got a confirmation call for it. Went in the day of and my appointment was an hour later than what I had scheduled it for. The front desk and manager blamed me and said I must have gotten the time wrong. I went ahead and played them the voicemail message they left confirming my appointment. Then they began to blame the girl who left the message. Anyhow I stayed because I really needed a massage. The place is kind of worn down and old looking, it was not clean you can see dirt on the walls. The massage was bad, the massage therapist was clearly new or just bad at her job she ignored my direction and did whatever she wanted to do. She also ended the massage 15 minutes early. Complaining to the manager doesn't help and the owner doesn't return calls. This is not a spa if you ask me. It really doesn't talk much to please me but this for a spa this is ridiculous. read more

Received a gift package for valentine's day which included a facial massage mani pedi. Massage was great but when the tall female in charge of doing facials and my microdermabrasion I could tell she was too busy checking her phone. I had a mask on but I could hear when she was texting or checking messages. I had the worst experience today! First of all it was so expensive! I spent $430 on a facial for my daughter & me, massage for my daughter & the worst body wave ever! The facial & massage were ok. They were nice, but not really worth the money. Then my horrific experience with the body wave. The hairdresser was so sloppy, the chemicals dripped all over my neck down to my back, all the way to my underwear. I kept telling her that it was burning, she basically ignored it, I had my daughter get me napkins from the bathroom & stuff it in my shirt because she was not doing anything. I spoke to the manager, all she said was "sorry" & for me to put cold towels on my burnt skin! The only thing she offered was a redo of the perm because I had to shower & wash it after because the chemicals were on my neck all the way down my back! I showed my sweater, it was soaked with the chemicals, all they could say was, "oh"! I wanted my $100 dollars that I paid for this wretched body wave experience, & this manager said, we can't do it because the services were rendered!!! She didn't even offer anything until I mentioned it! There was no compensation for what they did. In the end, nothing was solved because the only offer was the redo! Why the heck will I go back there after what I went through?!?! Horrible! Don't waste your time or your money! Oh to top it all off, as I was getting my hair done, a freaking big cockroach was crawling near my foot, & I has pointed it out, it took 3 of the workers to find it & kill it! Really??? RUN... as fast as you can from this place. I was referred to this place from a girl that did my nails. I live half the year in McAllen and half the year in Miami, Florida. My hair stylist was Corina. Let me get straight to the point. She NEVER went over prices. I told her I wanted to keep my blonde hair but have it blend a little bit. I havent been a dark brown in over 10 years. So she keeps telling me that I need to do the "cap" and that it blends more and I get more out of my money. First of all, using the "cap" is OLD SCHOOL. People dont use that anymore. So I told her I would try it because she said it would not hurt. Um, NO. So it comes out and my hair is like an ash medium brown color. HORRIBLE! So she says I will fix it. She says I will put the "cap" back on and fix it. I said "no"! I will not go through that again. I told her to use the "foil" to add highlights. So here I am again going through this. When in the first place she should have done "low and highlights' in foil. My appointment was at 1pm and I didn't get done until 5:35pm. So she begins to tell me how I need some treatment for my hair to close the pores in my hair. (what pores?) so when she is finally done I go to check out and my bill is close to $300. she charged me $100 for the "cap" and $80 for foil highlights. The treatment for my hair was around $40 and the haircut $45. I paid and left a $40 tip. I realized a couple minutes later I needed to say something. I complained because if this lady knew what she was doing then she wouldn't have had to correct my hair and charge me $80 instead of using this stupid "cap" on my hair. When I confronted Corina I said that even in Miami I do not get charged this much for hair. She said that she has to charge per tone on my hair and this is not Miami, this is McAllen. I will never ever return to this place again. It was an awful experience and I still hate my hair. read more

Disaster,stay away from this place at all costs. I've had my hair colored/bleached for years and this is the first time that I've had my scalp blistered. The stylist was so reckless that she even managed to bleach and destroy the dress I was wearing. These were all a first for me! The manager and owner would not return phone calls regarding my dress being damaged. I went to the location and the poor receptionist had to deal with me because the manager would not come out of hiding and the stylist pretended she was busy. After two weeks the owner finally called me and did everything short of blaming me. He told me that I was told to "change my dress prior to the service", which was a complete lie. Who changes their clothes at a salon! He asked if I've ever had my hair bleached and I told him that I have been bleached for half my life. The service is horrific, the owner is rude and after multiple pointless trips, the owner finally decided to give me a portion of what it costs to replace my dress. Went in to get my hair dyed for New Years Eve. Left with poorly done highlights and not in the color I wanted my hair. My hair was given a trim as well and the left and right side were different lengths. I had to hide my hair under a cap/beanie for four days until I could get someone else to fix my hair (thank you Portal Beauty Escape). When I finally got to talk to the manager all that was offered to me was for another one of their hair stylists to fix my hair free of charge, but since my hair was already fixed there was nothing more they could offer. No refund, no gift card, absolutely nothing. I feel terrible that my hair stylist was indeed a very sweet lady and people make mistakes, but management definitely could have dealt with the situation better. Instead I was told only the owner would be able to refund my money but it was very rare of the owner to approve that leaving me to write this review as nothing else could be done. read more
