If it's "Grille" with an "e" at the end, it has to be fancy right? My work team came to Catalina island for a team building trip and we had lunch here. We had our own 3-course menu, with different options to choose for the entree. For a large party like ours, it must've been easier to manage with a set menu but I'm glad we had variety! I had the tomato soup as an appetizer, chose the swordfish dish for entree, and ended with a lemon cheesecake.The tomato soup/bisque was quite good, not too rich or salty as some other restaurants make it. It was just the right texture/thickness so it doesn't leave you feeling too full. The swordfish, however, was not too impressive nor memorable, with the fish being on the drier side, lacking flavor. The best dish I had during our 3-course meal was the lemon cheesecake for dessert. I was refraining from sugar but couldn't resist from its presentation. I did not try the mascarpone, but the lemon cheesecake/custard itself was very soft and not too sweet/rich. The smashed grapefruit (alcoholic) drink I had was VERY strong also! read more

Avalon Grille is one of the fancier places on the island, offering excellent food selections you would typically find at white-tablecloth type restaurants, but offering a more relaxed vibe. The ahi tuna appetizer was one of the most thoughtfully crafter seafood appetizers i have encountered in a long time. The chimichurri hangar steak was excellent and a remarkably large portion. This place was our go to restaurant in Catalina!! Literally the best food around! Plus we were able to use our hotel credit if we sent the bill to our room at Atwater! The place is beautiful right in the middle of everything and the wait was quick (about 20min) for a busy evening. I ordered the corn ribs and aguachilies from there tapas menu and boy were they fire!!! We came back a couple days later and I ordered the same bc I couldn't leave without more! My sister ordered the filet mignon which she said was also her favorite of the island because you got to choose from a variety of sides and not a set standard. The drinks were great, the service was amazing and everyone was friendly. I sure hope next time we visit they have these items again but I understand if they rotate their menu LOL. We loved this place so much we came twice during our short trip- once for dinner and once for drinks & dessert. The complimentary tajin popcorn is so good, and the cocktails were all delicious. I thought my steak frites were amazing- the chimichurri was a good flavor and the potatoes were perfectly crispy. Bf enjoyed his burger as well. We got the guava mango cheesecake for dessert and it was light and had just the right amount of tartness and sweetness. Service was excellent as well. I came here for an early early dinner. I didn't feel like ordering a main entree, so my party and I ordered several appetizers instead. We had the grilled octopus, the fried board, the chicken lollipops, and the ahi tuna tartare. The food itself was not bad... but it certainly wasn't exceptional. Everything is a bit pricey considering the portions and the quality of the food. Before you get your food, they give you a small bucket of popcorn. Interesting! I would give this place 4 stars, but I took a star off because of our seats. My party sat on the outskirts of the patio dining, somewhat close to a dumpster that seemed like it may be shared between Avalon Grille and 1 other restaurant? My favorite on the island after trying a few top rated restaurants! The service was awesome, really enjoyed the upbeat atmosphere. The waiter was very patient to introduce the menu and made great recommendation. The choppino was delicious (I loved the scallops in it!). The dragon berry mojito was also tasty (and cute), and the waiter was accommodative to make it half shot. The last thing I want to call out is that they serve homemade popcorn that tastes wonderful. When I asked the waiter about the popcorn, he shared that they serve different flavors every day! And I can see he was proud of the restaurant. My boyfriend and i came here on 3/2/19. We had the most amazing time here. Our server Marcela was AMAZING!!! She brought us some yummy complimentary popcorn and it was delicious. We ordered the fried calamari to start that too was very good. Then for dinner I had the scallops and the bf had the salmon. Both were the best we have ever tasted. The scallops were very well prepared and just enough for me. My bf salmon was delicious, it had the most crispy salmon ever. Then for dessert we shared the chocolate moose. And let me tell you, it was the best I've ever had. Our amazing server Marcela gave us some of your popcorn to take back to our hotel. So thank for the great time we had here. They told me I need to ask my waiter (which would require me going in and sitting down before even knowing if I can be accommodated), or call back in an hour to talk to someone else... because whoever answered the phone had no knowledge about the restaurant's menu. I called back an hour later - five times over the span of an hour and no one ever answered me. If you have a dietary need, they do not want your business. Came here for a birthday dinner - around 6pm on a Sunday night. Got seated at the bar area where the kids had a long booth bench all to themselves. :) It was very busy but the servers stayed on top of it. Actually, turns out it was the bar tenders pulling double duty! I ordered the prime rib which is their specialty here. Also tried their octopus and coconut shrimp. I really enjoyed both, but I think they could give you more shrimp. We were adoring the adjacent tables order of the fried plate, it was huge! On Sundays, wine is discounted so we got a very special bottle of Opus One. There was a lot of whispering going on at the table which I wasn't privy too. Best meal we had all weekend. We ate at a ton of different restaurants in Avalon over this past VDay weekend. This place was by far the best. Food, service, and ambiance were on point. All the meals we are after coming here were pale in comparison. If I could redo things, we would have just eaten here!!! Had the octopus tentacle which was super weirdly good. It freaked my kids out, but it was fun. I can't recall the exact dish I had, but it was the vegan option they had on the dinner menu. I think it was like spaghetti squash. Who cares what it was though because it was so damn tasty. Kids and husband all liked their meals. It was a busy evening when we came, but I was able to give my cell number to the hostess. We were able to walk around and peruse a shop or two while waiting. So worth the wait too. If we come back to the island, this will be our go to! read more

Many of the restaurants on the main strip close by 9pm, but as long as you are there before then, they will seat you and accommodate. I think our waitress was a little exhausted and came off a bit rude after I asked what was the difference between the two burgers they offer. Her answer, "Just read the description on the menu"...... The truth is their is a big difference that's not actually described on the menu: The AG burger is more of your standard cheeseburger whereas the Plowman's Burger taste more like an Italian fusion burger.
