Went here to get my wiki wacked and it was pretty enjoyable. They're a very casual tiki bar with food offerings. Staff seemed to give us the side eye while being jovial with others; not sure what prejudice they had against us. Normally I can forgo blank stares, but I expect a little more when I'm in a tourist area. - Wiki Wacker Both tropical fruity and alcoholic at the same time. You get a hat or sticker with it, and we weren't asked which one we preferred. The strength is similar to a long island, due to the mix of rum and brandy. Decent blend that had a pretty light to deep orange gradient, and an extra pineapple slice. We had fun with the straw hat, so it's fine that fate declared we receive this souvenir. - Buffalo Milk I preferred this drink over the Wiki Wacker, but I can see some people not being into it. It tastes like a creamy nothing. I liked it because the flavor was very, very subtle; it was like an icy, subtly creamy, subtly banana, subtly bitter smoothie topped with whipped cream and nutmeg. Nothing about it has buffalo in it. I would get this again. To sum it up, theming is nice and drinks are aesthetic, yummy, and effective. The service was friendly, there's a bartender who is younger and tall who was really nice and then there's an older gentleman with glasses who helped us out the second time he was okay seems to be annoyed when we asked questions about the menu or what's for special. LuauLarry was recommended for the Buffalo Milk & the Wiki Wack so of course we had to try it. We wanted to sit up front to people watch, they allowed us to wait for the perfect table facing the boardwalk. Our waitresswasted no time offering us drinks which after we order made it to our table within 5 minutes. The Buffalo Milk was great, couldnt taste the alcohol but that makes them dangerous. Whatever my wife had to earn the Wiki Wacker hat is what she had, she seemed to like it as it was gone in minutes. Not sure what the purplish drink was but it was dang good too. We didnt order alot of food, mainly came for the drinks but e erything we saw looked amazing. We stopped by Luau Larry's for a quick snack and some drinks. The vibe was great: fun, lively, exactly what you want when you're on vacation and the service was solid too. Foodwise...mixed bag. We ordered half a dozen oysters, fries, and the Mexican shrimp cocktail. The fries were good, no complaints there. The oysters, though, were not good, and the Mexican shrimp cocktail was also a miss. Definitely disappointing and not something I'd order again. Now the drinks? Way better. We had the spicy Mexican lollipop and the dragon lemonade, and both were really good. I'd come back for drinks for sure and maybe try different food items, just not the ones we ordered. We saw people eating pizza and that looked delicious! Will try next time. I am happy I chose this place when I visited Catalina Island. They have a wide selection of burgers and drinks. I was happy to see that it was not overpriced, even though it is a fun, touristy restaurant in a touristy area. I got the burger with pineapple and teriyaki sauce and it was so good. Amazing place for fun drinks, loud music, and friendly guests! This is almost like the main dive bar of Catalina Island. The vibes are there, the music is unbeatable, the Mai Tai's are highly recommended! However the space is a bit tight and old school. Otherwise, it is great! Our experience at Luau Larry's was good. The food was okay. The fish from the fish & chips was delicious and battered perfectly, but the fries were pretty bland. Definitely needed to add salt to them. The burger was good, but again the fries were very bland and needed salt. The drink was one of their most popular on the menu, but to me was just WAY too sweet for something called "spicy". The amount of sugar or whatever sweetness added in made the drink quite thick. Service was okay. Our server was nice but not very attentive to us, there was a food runner I believe that was even more attentive & was excellent! I wish I remembered her name because she was great! She checked in on us multiple times whereas our server did not check in once. The bartenders were nice & funny. The ambiance is nice, I love the loud music inside gives it more of a lit party vibe! STEPH JUDGEMENT: Festive spot for a casual meal. Some friends recommended that we try the Buffalo Milk here. Buffalo Milk, we recently discovered, is sort of the signature drink of Catalina Island. We decided to try this place for lunch and had a good time. It's a very touristy Tiki-themed place, as the name implies, complete with a "grotto" seating area. It's the kind of place that doesn't let you forget that you're on vacation, dammit! We ordered the following; - Deep Fried Combo for me (good-sized platter with fried clams, shrimp and fish, accompanied by fries and a good cole slaw) - Garden burger with curly fries for the hubby (he said it was good, but nothing extraordinary) - Luau Iced Tea (felt more like an electric lemonade than a Long Island iced tea, but good) - Buffalo Milk (very reminiscent of a Mudslide--delicious but can't say it packed a punch) Our server was very friendly and prompt, although it was quite busy--definitely a pro. Long story short, we got baited by their sign outside advertising a spicy lobster roll. Despite the fun atmosphere and friendly service, we just couldn't get past the subpar food. The fault likely falls on us, I know, but ugh, I couldn't help but feel disappointed with my meal. The lobster roll was ...literally just that. A roll with lobster pieces in it, with a slice of lemon and side of clarified butter. The "spicy" part was a jalapeno aioli drizzled over it. Note: it was not spicy. With soggy room temperature fries, It was all kinda cafeteria-esque, if I have to describe it in one word. I tried a bite and only tasted old fish. The fish were absolutely awful and gave me stomach cramps the rest of the day. The service was also mediocre. The waitress was not interested in seating us and was too busy watching tv like the rest of the staff. The table was not cleaned properly either. If you're going to Avalon, I 100% recommend Luau Larry's! My friend and I were here for the MLK weekend and went in twice! Across both trips, I ordered the Hamburger Aloha O'Lea, a side of onion rings, as well as the Gummy Bear Cocktail, Avalon Sunset, and Ken's Punch. The hamburger was great, especially with the addition of the guacamole and the onion rings were perfectly fried. Out of all the cocktails I got, I definitely loved the Gummy Bear one the best as I had it three times across 2 days. All of their cocktails are amazing though. Service was also really good! During our SoCal trip, we spent a day in beautiful Catalina. It's always a fun time when we visit here whether staying here a couple of days or just hanging for the day. With that said, one of my disappointments with Catalina is that the dining is only subpar. Only a couple of restaurants I would highly recommend when visiting here. Luau Larry's unfortunately is not one of them. The lively atmosphere here doesn't quite make you forget about the mediocre food this place serves up. Food is no better than getting food at your local Applebees. Hawaiian cuisine is not definitely not really served here. They give their burgers cute little Hawaiian names but otherwise a basic burger. Good on booze here but go elsewhere if you really want some Hawaiian cuisine. read more

I live in Huntington Beach and brought a colleague over to Catalina for a business trip. When locals bring guests to the island, we want to show them the best of what Catalina has to offer. Luau Larry's was supposed to be part of that experience. My colleague ordered the swordfish taco and found it dry. When she mentioned it to our server, she was told she never even took a bite. She had. I tried it myself - it was dry. We asked for a manager. The manager backed the server. No apology. No offer to replace the dish till the very end The taco was not the issue. Being called a liar in front of your guest is not something you forget. A 30 year Catalina institution should know that one bad interaction can undo decades of goodwill. We heard so many good things about Larry's so we wanted to check it out. We wanted to try the coconut shrimp. At least THAT was good. Even the ambience for a weekday was good. What ruined everything for our first experience was the very unprofessional service! Our server "Jose" (that's what he said his name was) was not very attentive. We ordered 2 entrees and only got one. When I asked for a 2nd slice of lemon he brought it out WITH HIS HANDS!! He kept going outside probably out of boredom from all his yawning. When we looked in, it was booming with positive energy! There was live music with a guy playing an electric guitar. It was loud, but not loud enough to turn us away. We took a seat at the bar so we could see the bartender in action. It was exciting to watch him mix a variety of concoctions. We HAD to order the famous Wicki Wacker so we could wear the silly straw hats! You can get a sticker instead, but that's boring! Take note: YOU MUST CHOOSE THE STRAW HAT! It's a MUST-DO when you're in Avalon. The Wicki Wacker was delicious and fruity! It has pineapple and orange juice that make it sweet! We also had the Buffalo Milk - very yummy!
