This food shack is the perfect place to go for some fresh seafood while enjoying the ambiance of the pier. Rustic yet vibrant is the vibe and during the lunch hour, this place gets very busy. I loved sitting at the railing watching the boats go in and out of the harbour while spooning their fresh clam chowder into my mouth. I ordered and paid at the counter and as soon as my food was ready, they will call for my ticket. The fish platter was also super fresh. The grilled halibut was seasoned perfectly and the cocktail sauce and tartar sauce were a good compliment. They have a self service soda fountain with $1 refills. The views were great but you do have to watch out for the birds overhead. They have a sun shade to cover the eating area but the birds will steal your food if you are not attentive. The birds will also poop while flying so it is best to get a covered seat. Be prepared for communal seating and you also clear your food trash when you are done. read more

Another customer (who ordered 25 minutes after me) complained about the wait and was worried about missing their excursion so the cashier gave him one of mine. The cashier and the cook accused me of being unkind when I said " hey I waited a long time". They told me they could make my second plate in a minute. A couple minutes later they gave me par- cooked fish sticks. It would have been nice to be notified by the cashier that the wait would be long before taking my order. This is more of an experience than a gastronomical treat. Located at the end of the Green Pier, it is a very interesting place to dine. All the seating is outdoors (see my pic) - so plan accordingly. There are great views of the harbor (see my pics).The people watching is great: people fishing from the pier, tourists either strolling the pier or catching a tour, or people going/coming from their anchored boats. All are fascinating to watch. We had their fish and chips, see pic. Our 3 pieces were a bit on the small side. The breading was very light and crisp. They were served piping hot. I've always gone to Rosie's aka Avalon Seafood because it's central and in a historic location, but a few other places have bigger fish pieces for the same price (and that don't look like fish sticks). We came here two days in a row for afternoon snacks. It's really the best fish & chips in town! It's a fast casual place at green pier so the views are great. We have tried a bunch of items off the menu. Fish & chips, grilled swordfish & halibut, fried calamari, swordfish sandwich, chili cheese fries and chicken wings. I'm a self-proclaimed fish and chips snob, having been in Scotland while in the Navy for 2 years, so my standards are a bit high. I'd give the food a solid 4, breading is the key. Most US F&C is heavily breaded which is a no-no, but this was bery light. I prefer fillet-style pieces, these we more rectangular fish stick looking but a good amount of fish still. They got bonus points for having plenty of malt vinegar and salt available, and what got them from a 4 to 5cstars was they had good pricing on both the F&C as well as beer, while being on the pier in a California resort town. We ordered a seafood combo plate which came fried with 2 pieces of Shrimp, Fish, Calamari, scallops. We also got fish n chips, & a halibut sando. Basically I knew the food wasn't gonna be good in Catalina because that's what everyone says. So the expectations were met as the bar was set very low. Got the Combo #2 which was $14 + tax. 3 pieces of fish and 2 pc shrimp. With a side of choice (cole slaw, steamed rice or fries). The whole plate was nicely fried but the fish was not fresh and definitely unseasoned. No salt no pepper. Just plain batter on frozen fish. The view was spectacular so that added a star. The place is so beautiful on the pier! The seafood is super fresh and the ceviche tostada is the best ceviche I've ever had. I had to go back later that day to get a second serving. NGL, when I saw this fish and chips stand on the pier at Catalina Island, I didn't expect much. I think of Navy Pier and Santa Monica Pier (no shade!)...and just don't expect much for touristy pier food spots. I met a few people with places locally while eating there, and that always signals well to me when locals go to the touristy spots still...it must be hard for them to trek through throngs of strangers. Unshockingly, I tried the fish & chips. I was so pleasantly surprised with the three strips of fish I received. It was some of the freshest white fish I've ever had inside a deep fried coating. The fish was crisp on the outside (without being too thick of a crusting) and plump on the inside. My friend and I also tried the garlic cheese curds. OH MY GOODNESS, the flavor was way better than expected. Just as above, really nice, light coating on these squeeky cheeses. The garlic added just what these needed flavor-wise. Loved them. I feel bad that I judged this book by the cover. It's so much more than a fish shack on a pier! Or maybe...that's exactly what it is and that's enough. Call it a strong 4.5 stars and I'm rounding up for value, freshness, quality, and friendly service. Most restaurants on the island charge very high, some might say ridiculously high, prices. You always hear the same thing--we're an island, things cost more, etc. I get it. This place serves very good, very fresh food, at very reasonable prices. So, that's a big win right there. Plus, you're on the pier and you can't argue with that view. We tried the fish sandwich with coleslaw and cheese (for an extra charge). I'm told that adding the cheese makes it "island style." Ok, I'll go along with that. The kid got a corn dog. The sandwich was fresh and delicious. And you simply cannot mess up a corn dog so no complaints there, either. Tourists beware. Don't get suckered like us. We had the lousiest fish and chips of our life. The so-called fish were previously frozen fish sticks, not fresh fish, and the chips were of lower quality than the lowest rated fast food joints. It was noon and there were no customers eating.
