We stayed at Hotel Atwater, and the walk was uphill past the golf course pro shop. We definitely worked up our appetites getting there. Placing our order took quite some time because the bartender had called out sick, so the server was on double duty, slinging cocktails. Well, the food and my Bloody Mary were definitely worth the wait. My Portuguese sausage and poached eggs were delicious. Similarly, my BF raved about his huevos rancheros. Where to start, the positives: -Food was good -Friendly staff Negatives: We had dinner Monday afternoon and there was a cat inside the place which is odd and unsanitary. Given my allergies to cats I had no choice but to have the dinner to go. The burgers were good I told the woman well done but it was med well. No biggie. Tuesday morning we decided to go again for breakfast. The wait was around 30min for 1 omelette , french toast & chorizo with eggs. Besides the cat hair in our salsa everything else was good but definitely not worth the wait and cat hair! We sat outside, when I got up to go back to our room I had cat poop on my bottom. I was so upset because who wouldn't ? I spoke to the "owner" all he said was I spoke to my sister told her we need the cat out of here I'm sorry. Um no this is more than just blaming eachother. That cat is a wild cat that's everywhere outside and can carry diseases. Not sure why nobody has put a complaint! Honestly for the hassle of having to wash my shorts because who wants to put cat poop in their suitcases? The wait & once again THE CAT not worth it. read more

We had the chilaquiles with chorizo and the California Benedict and all I can say is this is our new favorite spot! The chilaquiles were still a bit crunchy, the green sauce was super flavorful with a medium heat and the chorizo was nice and crunchy. The California Benedict had a somewhat of a sopa bread with a delicious hollandaise sauce with bacon. After a long day exploring the island, my husband and I figured we'd try the restaurant inside our hotel. Pretty good reviews, close by, saves us from driving down the hill... sounded perfect. Yeah... wrong decision. Drinks: My husband ordered a margarita and instantly pulled an ant off the rim of the glass. Okay... it happens. He tried to let it go. Then he noticed a dark winged critter sitting at the bottom of his drink... it was a fly. I told him to bring it to the server's attention. When he did, the server looked confused, like he didn't see anything. Then he said, "I can make you a new one or you can just finish drinking this..." Finish drinking a margarita with a fly in it. That should have told us everything. Food: I ordered the carne asada plate. Seasoning was fine... honestly passable... but the cut of meat was the cheapest, chewiest carne asada I've ever been served. My husband ordered the tri tip plate. It was just bad: * Bland meat * Raw broccoli * Bland mash * Thick, chewy slices of bland "tri tip" To be fair: Our server checked on us when he could. He seemed genuinely trying... but it looked like he was playing chef, bartender, and server all at once. Total recipe for disaster. No one can pull that off. I ate what I could because trying to navigate the island late at night for food isn't ideal... but this meal was a letdown from start to finish. Bottom line: Steer clear. It was pretty empty so quiet while we were there but not sure how it is throughout the day. Server was friendly and kept checking in on us. The reviews had me ready for a yummy breakfast but our experience was so disappointing. Perhaps it was a bad day for them; it certainly was for us. We arrived on a Friday morning, only to find the door locked even though Yelp and banner said they were open. They were, but forgot to unlock the door. OK, people can forget, but the rubber meets the road with the food. One of us ordered an eggs Benedict dish and the other eggs and sausage. All proved greasy and way over salted. I could not eat much, nor my companion. Beyond that we started indoors but 2 TVs had 2 different programs - - way too much noise. And the cleaning product used were easily smelled. The restaurant is inside the Catalina Canyon Inn. We decided to grab dinner here one night since we didn't want to go back into town. The portion and price is very reasonable and probably bigger than any portion elsewhere. The food could use a little more seasonings and adjustments but overall tasted like a home cooked meal. But what really over the top was the service! The server has to be the best of the island, he was attentive, asked if we needed refills, checked up on us the right amount of times. We walked up to the restaurant and found it to be quite a challenge on an empty stomach but totally worth it. Location: it is up the hill from the mail tourist area, so be ready for a climb. The patio is small as is the inside, but it was not too crowded on a Sunday. The good news is that it is away from the tourist area which is a bonus for us. The food was solid. They have cocktails, beers on tap, and other options. The service was meh. We're staying at the hotel that the restaurant is in so my wife and I initially ate here out of convenience. We went around lunch time and got garlic cheese bread and an order of fries, along with a gummy bear shot and Mexican lollipop shot. We were impressed with the attentiveness of the staff (one staff member noticed my wife was cold and gave her a blanket to cover up with while we ate.) It was overwhelming and the tres leches are literally burnt pancakes with lechera that's literally it nothing else but a thin layer of lechera. Lechera for those who don't know is sweetened condensed milk. Also to make tres leches you use, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk , heavy cream or milk. So to call this tres leches it's fucken embarrassing. My husband ordered the corn beef hash and it was also burnt. The burrito my son got was good, mini kid pancakes were good. We also got the country fried steak it was good. Like those 3 plates weren't burnt so at least they were edible, these are going in the trash. It sucks honestly the only reason they are in business is because of the location, If it wasn't for the fact that the hotel is so far from everything and the only way to other restaurants is climbing up and down a mountain no one would choose to eat here. This place has some of the best food in Avalon that we have tried so far! It is at the Canyon Inn which is up the hill away from the main strip, but we were able to download the Circuit app and get a 3 minute golf cart ride from our hotel to the restaurant, I think it was $4-$5 each way (the wait time was only 5 minutes, too). Circuit is the "Uber" app for the island, just FYI. The ambience here was great. The restaurant is located inside the Canyon Inn premise which is an open air style facility with lots of palm trees and plants, and at night it's lit up with beautiful lighting which made for a romantic setting. The food here was really tasty, and very reasonably priced. We had 1 appetizer, 2 entrees (ribeye and pasta, each with a side salad included) and two glasses of wine for just under $90. Brianna was our server and she was so friendly and informative! It was my birthday so she played Stevie Wonder's birthday song and brought us out a churro sundae which was delicious! I highly recommend, it's great food, service, and going here gets you off the strip to see a different part of town which is another plus. Thanks for a great meal! read more

Intrigued by the exceptionally high ratings, we chose Sunset Bar & Grill for a casual dinner experience. We could not be more surprised to say that the food was outstanding. In its own right, it was some of the best, non-homemade, fettuccine alfredo and birria burritos we've had. The hilly journey and unassuming exterior left us questioning our decision, but once inside, every bite left us curiously amused at how a restaurant so casual could pack so much flavor into its food. I'd be remiss not to mention the reasonable prices and great service that we received. Overall, we were very pleased. Sunset exceeded expectations and was everything we could've hoped for on a casual evening stay in Catalina.
