My in-laws paid their $150K move-in fee on the basis of the promises made over the course of…read moreseveral years that the rent and minimal fees were all inclusive. This retirement community was supposed to be economical, safe, and convenient. Meals were supposed to be discounted, with many services like a shopping shuttle and medical transportation included. In truth, they could have lived in a bigger, more luxurious room at the Best Western down the street and eaten all their meals at a local restaurant for less money than they ended up paying. After move-in, the free shopping shuttle and medical transport were shut down because Friendsview "couldn't find a driver to hire". This, to my knowledge, has never been subsequently addressed. Their 500 sf apartment cost them $1200 per month, initially. They ended up cooking their own meals because meals were $12 each ($72 per day for 3 meals for 2 people). Eventually, my FIL had to go into the Friendsview memory care program, which was supposed to be a greatly discounted program for residents of Friendsview. Thereafter, the monthly rent and fees amounted to $3000. That did not include supplies used in the memory care unit. They were charged for every item supplied, every aspirin, and every latex glove at exorbitant rates. To add injury to insult, workers in the memory care unit mismanaged my FIL's medication. Because one of the medicines was causing him to slip into unresponsiveness , his doctor ordered it stopped. When he was found unresponsive a few days later it became apparent that he was being given the medication despite a note in his chart to stop that medication. My in-laws granddaughter is an RN, and when she questioned why the drug was still being given staff argued with her that it was doctor's orders. The financial burden was more than my MIL could sustain long term, so when my FIL died she moved out, abandoning the $150K buy-in money. Our experience is that these people are dishonest, uncaring, incompetent, and will squeeze every penny out of their clients that they can. Avoid this place like the plague.

But they have lousy food and system of food service. Without any cafeteria sort of option, residents have no recourse but to sit at a table and wait for the courses of food to come out one by one. Sometimes, a half hour goes by before they even take dinner orders. Seniors who could manage a cafeteria line could get their food, eat, and then do whatever they want but they are bound to use the dining room. Too much pork, too many sauces, terrible pizza, things mixed with cheese, and iceberg is the only lettuce they use in their salads. Communications are poor. Many residents miss meals or come to few of them or do not come to this or that meeting for one reason or another. Yet, sometimes, announcements are sometimes made before meals or at a meeting. Staff knows not everyone is there. They seem to be counting on word of mouth. The other system for sharing information is one of blaring loudspeakers in the hallway. A senior with compromised hearing have told me that, like me, they can hear it but cannot make out what is being said. A member of the Christian community chose the Wednesday night film: The Chosen--a film series about Jesus. Being a series, it tied up each Wednesday night with its Christian film. It is not a documentary but follows a Christian version of the story of the Jew Jesus which represents neither the scholarly, the historical nor the Jewish consensus.

My family and I cared for my mom at our childhood home for 2+ years, but when her dementia progressed to the advanced stage, we realized she needed more care than we could provide. Luckily, we found Jenilee and her care- team at Heritage House. My family and I took a tour and were immediately impressed with the care team's friendliness, knowledge and ability to provide 24-hour skilled (and loving) care. Heritage House is located on a quiet, tree-lined street in a residential neighborhood. It's cozy and clean --full of plants and light, with a loving small dog and cat who like to check in on residents. Sadly my mom passed away a few nights ago (in her bed at Heritage House). Jenilee, Mark and Kate's thoughtful communication and care made my mom's transition a peaceful one for all of us. My family and I are eternally grateful and we 100% recommend Heritage House.

While the facility itself is gorgeous- behind the scenes it's not so peachy. I used to dread weekends because that's often when they utilized their agency caregivers (many of whom were inept and couldn't even do a proper transfer from bed to wheelchair). I had a certain incident there where one of these caregivers gave ME a controlled substance to give to my mom in case she needed it. Totally not okay and against protocol. I reported it. The Ackerly told me they were discussing it, but never got back to me. I had experience with caregivers trying to put my mom to bed at 6 pm like a toddler. When asked I was told "Well, that's always when we put your mom to bed." You will get tons of attention and questions answered before you move in and right after. But, the communication quickly ends- I experienced many unreturned emails and telephone calls. I realize this is a petty comment, but after my mom passed we never even got a condolence from The Ackerly. Not even a Hallmark card in the mail. In summary, while The Ackerly looks pretty, what goes on behind closed doors certainly isn't. Hopefully this review won't also get deleted.

They advertise Independent Living, and that's the level, I requested. Guess what? Ackerly lumps everyone into either Assisted or Memory Care and won't honor Independent Living! After two weeks there, we gave notice to move out and seek care elsewhere. The director of Health and Wellness being our reason. Best advice: Do not sign anything without review by your attorney. You need an escape clause in the event of sub-standard care that you feel you might be receiving. I am still getting bills from Omnicare, a commercial pharmacy, long after we moved out, for medication, which I never authorized or needed. I'm being generous with a two-star rating, only due to the ladies at the front desk, who are pleasant, contrasted with staff members!

After my parent died, only one Mgmt employee gave condolences after I called to tie up some things-not a word from the rest. At least they were finally showing their true selves. Additionally, one employee harassed my parent & tried to convert my parent to evangelical Christianity despite my parent being a reformed Catholic. I'd never recommend them, I'd warn people about what to expect. If you're very well-off, there's no problem but if you're on a fixed income, even if it's quite a healthy upper-middle class income, be prepared for them to bleed you dry...all while smiling & pretending to care. I also want to note that their meals are not expensive. Some people prefer quantity over quality. Your safest bets are the salads, avocado toast, soups, and fruit bowls. Part of my frustration with Cherrywood is that its a retirement home and the residents don't have a choice where to eat most days. At least this is true for those who can't easily travel. So the meals should be appetizing and inviting. There is a culinary director but somehow he claims to not be involved in culinary matters. I want that job. However, one would think the culinary director would offer to forward your concerns. This doesn't happen. The culinary director is NOT the chef. The chef and his staff try really hard. You usually won't find the culinary director. I don't see him helping when there is a rush, he has never greeted me or seated us where there is a line, and I assume he is usually in his office. One does see him on the family events. So he isn't totally invisible. Sounds like Cherrywood needs a culinary director who is responsible for improving the dining experience in their restaurant willing to greet guests. As stated before, Cherrywood caters to 7th Day Adventists and they are vegetarian. Their vegetarian selections are hopefully getting better. They were not really good before. The worst meal I had there was at the last Thanksgiving. That veggie meal included two slices of fake turkey. Think bologna or spam for Thanksgiving. As a comparison one of their competitors offers a nice salmon dinner every day as an option. Cherrywood offers this maybe once a week. Just saying other retirement homes offer better food services. I hope things get better.
