This is amazing Punjabi food - very fresh and seasonal. We got 3 plates - the veggie rice plate with mustard greens, spinach and tofu, the eggplant with curried chicken and the curried lamb. The mustard greens with tofu was spot on , the curried lamb was perfectly executed. The Eggplant with Curried Chicken combo sounded weird but tasted out of this world. We were full from our late lunch, and wanted something relatively light and interesting. We split a curried vegetable rice plate with lamb and a mango lassi. The food came out lickety-split. The curried vegetables were delicious, carefully seasoned, and with a range of textures, from almost raw to cooked tender. I really enjoyed the four chutneys they put on the edges of the plate. Each brought out a different angle to the food. The cold fruity, tangy, vinegar, or yogurt flavors made it very classy. The lamb was finely ground, and provided a nice accent. We were glad to get the last mango lassi, as it helped quench the spice in our mouths. The portions were perfect for us, and we were happy to get a healthy vegetable-rich meal. We were pondering getting gelato afterwards, but we were full and content with just a piece of chocolate for dessert. If we make it out to Mill Valley again, we will definitely be back to try the Indian burritos! read more

Sorry people but don't compare this place to anywhere else. I ordered the chicken curried pumpkin burrito. I just read that someone compared this spot to DOSA in San Francisco...ok I'm sorry but these are two completely different places. DOSA is a sit down restaurant that is tailored to the upscale crowd where as this is the express, bistro even, comfortable, and homey style warmth of flavors wrapped into a burrito. The paratha is not your standard tortilla so don't come expecting that either. It's thicker and really holds the juices of the curry in. I can't say I can eat this every day, but I can say that I periodically crave it and when I do it's a must have because nothing else compares in textrue/flavors. It's a small place so I don't recommend a big party. Thankfully it's easy to grab and go. read more

I love this small, understated restaurant just off the Main Street in Mill Valley. On our way back from Muir Woods we decided on Indian and found this quite place. When we arrived at about 4:30 this afternoon, I wondered how this place would fare when there was no one here, normally a basic warning sign. But after we ordered I see several Indian people walking toward this restaurant, and soon there was a line behind us! I ordered the rice Curried Pumpkin Rice plate with chicken, and my wife ordered a Mustard Green Spinich (Saag) Punjabi burrito. Within about ten minutes after we ordered, our delicious food arrived. It tasted wonderful! The curry spices were prominant, but blended well with the other items. For the Rice plate, instead of everything coming on separate little plates, everything was pleasantly placed on the plate, that included basmati rice, fresh curried garbanzo beans, low-fat yogurt, tamarind sauce, fresh herb salsa and seasonal fruit chutney and carrot pickle. Wow! Very filling and tasty! The burrito was also very tasty! The saag inside had much flavor and a bit of a curried kick. If the food was great, the service was even better. We ordered a mango lassi for our daughter, but it slipped out of her hands and dropped down to the sidewalk with a great splash! I went inside to ask for something to wipe it up, and the owner came out with a towel, but I told him that I would wipe up my mess. He smiled and nodded. Later, when he brought out our food, he noticed before I did that we forgot to pick up some napkins and utensils from inside. When I got up to get them, he was already there at our table, utensils in hand! Nice! As an afterthought, we saw our neighboring table with a brightly-colored cheesecake which looked really yummy, and we decide to have one as well. Topped with pistachios and sitting in a plate of mango sauce, it was satisfying. However, the cheesecake was fresh out of the freezer and hard as a rock! After waiting about 15 minutes it thawed t a good consistency. I like this place, and if the local Indian community frequents this place, you know it is legit! read more

I can only think that each Avatar's has its own owner because this one and the divine and delightful Avatar's in Sausalito are night and day apart is every aspect. In particular the attitude of the awful people who work there. I've given this location 5 tries! FIVE! And each time the help at the counter are dour, unfriendly, uncooperative, and slow (slow being the least offensive) I'm not a portion queen nor do I get too worked up over price, HOWEVER for me to complain you know there's something wrong. When I've asked for little rice, they give me extra. And when they plate the vegetables you truly get 2 of each! Seriously, two of each on a bed of rice. I've counted each time. Now that the Old Mill is open and fabulous with food options for those of who are gluten free and picky about quality ingredients there is zero reason for me to ever go back to this location of Avatar's. Avatars has been hit by the Corina Virus like so many restaurants. He remained open offering take out first and expanded to outside Dining spending real dollars to make it comfortable and safe. Now with outside dining prohibited again, it's take out only. The owner Ashok, had for years provided thousands of free dinners every year the day before thanksgiving- free- his way of paying back the community. He needs support now. Deeeeeee-licious. I asked the gentleman taking orders and preparing behind the counter which burrito to get and he said curried pumpkin. Then I asked chicken or lamb. I listened and enjoyed a wonderful perfectly sized burrito. The flavor and texture of the tortilla was tasty and unique. (I had read reviews about the tortilla holding in the ingredients. Although it did keep the curry in, I experienced the standard messy situation that any burrito typically offers.) All the same, the flavors, spices, consistency and price all awarded it 4-5 stars. My one gripe with Punjabi Burritos is that I wish they were open later! Even on Saturday nights, they are only open until 8 PM... Jeff and I tried to come here multiple times before we successfully made it before 8 PM. To order a burrito, you start with the basic Punjabi Burrito (I would probably label this a wrap...) and then add in whatever you'd like. I added the mixed curry vegetables and Jeff had the sweet potatoes. They also have various meat choices, fish, other veggies, etc. I loved both my wrap and Jeff's. The "tortilla" was thick, flavorful, and delicious and the inside was a little spicy and so yummy. Each wrap definitely provides a good-sized meal or even enough for left-overs if you're not a big eater. I hope to come back soon and try their special drinks too! read more

Ummmm...YUM! my son was having giggling fits when we were here. We were in Mill Valley for their yearly Winter Faire and while walking around the area, my husband saw the sign for Punjabi burritos. Since my son was craving pizza, we went to grab some slices for him first. Then after he finished his meal we ran over to Avatar's. So glad we did cause their food is tasty. And very easy on the wallet. My husband ordered one of their burritos and I ordered a rice plate. They take cash only so make sure to bring cash. Service was friendly and fast! I'm bummed I missed out on dessert but we will definitely be back soon to try their other dishes. Hubby found this place for a lunch spot stop on the way to Pt Reyes and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed their punjabi burritos. Your nose is greeted with the smell of curry upon entering getting your stomach ready for a treat. The plain which is the base of all burritos have garbanzo beans, pickled carrots, basmati rice, among other wonderful fillings. We chose to add pumpkin for one which was tasty with a hint of sweetness and the lamb curry for the other burrito which was just as tasty and savory. I have been here many times, always a happy surprise! Most times I stick with the regular menu and only once ordering the special. My regular order is the curried sweet potato burrito and add curried chicken. It should be noted that the sweet potato flavor is easily masked by the other flavors, so if you like the burrito to be sweeter, try the curried pumpkin. I have not ventured anything past mild, so for those that don't like spicy food, they should easily be able to enjoy anything. Had two lamb curry burritos and they were good, could have used some more flavor and perhaps an easier way to eat as they were very wide burritos but a genius idea for sure. I have been to Avatar's Punjabi Burrito's about three times, now. All the times the service and food left a lot to be desired. I went back the second time hoping that that my first experience at Avatar's was a result of the staff having a lazy day off but I was wrong. Each time I order the meal (usually the Jerk Chicken Rice Plate), the vegetables are hard and undercooked, not enough rice & very few veggies. One other disgusting thing about this restaurant is the uncooked meat stored in the fridge where you pick your drinks... It's plain gross. The mango and rose lassis here are very tasty however. Avatar's Punjabi Burritos is a good place to stop and eat when you don't really feel like traveling far to get mediocre Indian food. Its just alright. read more

I came here because the reviews I've read were relatively good; but in my opinion, there is much better tasting Indian fusion. Please try DOSA in San Francisco, experience the flavor and spice. There is MUCH better flavor and taste in Indian cuisine and this place is definitely over-rated. We stopped by this location because it was on the way back from our hike at Alamere falls. This is definitely not a spot to dine-in on, but to take take out. However, the curried sweet-potato burrito with chicken I got was lacking the typical masala and flavor even while hot. Quite frankly, I was disappointed by the level of flavor in these burritos. The stuffing was falling out of the burrito and I eventually had to eat the stuffing by itself. Probably the best smoked eggplant I have ever had! My boyfriend and I were driving through Mill Valley on our way from Stinson Beach to San Rafael and made a pit stop here for lunch. My boyfriend got the pumpkin curry burrito and I got the smoked eggplant rice plate - literal heaven on earth! After going on a strenuous hike through the rugged wilderness aka Muir Woods, my friends and I decided to stop here for lunch! It's a tiny restaurant (probably only fits a total of 10-15 people), but the burritos are HUGE!! When the lady brought them out, it looked like she was carrying 3 motherships! I got the burrito with pumpkin and veggies! The menu is a little confusing because it looks like you can get a burrito with pumpkin, sweet potato, AND eggplant, but you actually only choose ONE of those and it'll come with the veggies. I really liked the "tortilla" which was some kind of whole wheat carb. I have to agree with my friend when she said it was like a really thick tortilla or a really thin naan bread. The mango lassi was super good and very refreshing! Next time, I will try the rose or salty lassi! I would actually give this place 3~3.5 stars for the punjabi burrito because I felt like the curry flavor overpowered everything else. I couldn't taste much of the pumpkin or my friend's sweet potato. The mango lassi yogurt drink gets 5 starts though! :) The lady that was working was also SO sweet, nice, and friendly!
