I love Indian food; I also love Mexican food. Enter: Avatar's. Wow. I didn't know what to expect! When I looked at the menu, I just knew it was going to be an exciting meal! There's something for everyone here. I was impressed to see a gluten-free vegetarian samosa in the apps! I have a few gluten-free friends so this would be great for them to come a try! On top of that, Avatar's takes pride in being open to accommodate to customers' dietary requqests as best they can, so the menu isn't extremely fixed. Their food and service are top notch! For my first visit, we were greeted warmly and were able to get a table right away since we went at an off peak dining hour. I'm easy, I just went with Dahl and Basmati. It's my favorite thing even tho it's super basic. The dahl was packed full of flavor, eating it was such a delight. I hope someday they'll create a vegan-friendly dessert or even a vegan Mango Lassi. I have been coming here since I was a kid. For over 30 years anytime I'm close by - I come to Avatar's. The food is amazing - I have never had anything less than great. An amazing mix of flavors and cuisine that is always top notch. It's always at the top of my suggestion list to folks visiting - great stop if visiting Marin for an afternoon. And should be on everyone's list in Sausalito. Ashook and Kala have treated us with so much love over the years - the service and experience is just as good as the food. Today I got to bring my 3 year old for the first time. Ashook set up an amazing and age appropriate lunch for her and she declared that the special dessert is the "best dessert ever". We asked the waiter what the dish was we saw online and he said it's not on the menu. He said it's blackened chicken and they can make it zero spicy to extra spicy. He said it has grilled vegetables and basmati rice. The picture looked amazing so I ordered it. The sauce was delicious. Half of the chicken was tender and unfortunately the other half was not. I don't like it when stems of the vegetables are not removed. I think it takes away from the dish. The vegetables were grilled which I enjoyed. Great tasting rice. Service was very good. Avatars ended up being the best kind of unexpected find. I walked in not knowing what to expect and left genuinely impressed with the service, the food, and the whole experience were outstanding. We saw the menu and were intrigued so we came to check it out. The mushroom app was really flavorful. The curry was delicious and the paratha were necessary to soak it all up! The mango rose ravioli was super unique. The sauce was creamy and the slight sweetness of the rose and mango paired well. The enchiladas were delicious! It was mashed sweet potato inside and the creamy texture with the flavorful sauce was a nice pairing! The dessert was fine, but I was a little underwhelmed and disappointed. They have a nice outdoor seating area which is great on a warm summer afternoon. The service was fine and I appreciated that he wanted to put in our order before a larger party. It was really confusing to order the enchiladas because we wanted to mix and match but he didn't understand that at first and when he did, he said we couldn't do that. We ordered veggies on the side and got rice instead so they had to remake it. It's been several years since I wrote a review on Avatar's, and I figured it was time that I update my thoughts. The flavors of the entrees continue to be incredible. The proteins are cooked well, and the vegetables still have a bit of crunch -- which I love because I cannot stand soggy vegetables. Service continues to be excellent. The interior is well decorated and inviting. There is indoor and outdoor seating depending on your preference and the weather. While there is a menu you can order from, you can also ask the owner to make you a dish based on the protein, veggies, and spice level you would like. Very bad food at a very high price. I do not recommend. Yesterday went with my friend for lunch. Lamb curry was not fully cooked can see blood, very hard to chew, 2Tbsp of rice, rice had no flavor colored with yellow food paint, and couple of grilled veggies at $30.00. Salmon curry was not fully cooked, fish tasted like cotton, felt like fish was soaked in chemicals to make it soft, can see uncooked flesh, 2 Tbsp of rice, colored with yellow paint and couple of slices of veggies at $30.00. All presented on a huge plate and spread so it will look like lots of food on your plate. Bread was not naan. Tasted like Mexican flat bread thin, soaked in oil and warmed up, 2 pieces of bread, sliced into narrow slices and piled on top of each other to appear like lots of bread at $10.00. Two cups of Indian tea tastes less than average with no tea flavor at &12.00. Two samosas at $15.00 Plus tax and tip. All this nastiness cost us for 2 people for lunch $100.00. Honestly, Avatar's is my husband and I's favorite Indian(ish) restaurant in the Bay Area. Their samosas are always so delicious and perfectly crispy on the outside with amazing sauces, and we love getting their off-menu basmati rice dishes with a combo of sea bass and prawn. They don't use oil, dairy, gluten, and my body always feels so clear and clean after I eat here! There's so much love in the food. Highly, highly recommend! read more

Unfortunately this was not the case and I chose this restaurant over others near the water in Sausalito for the positive reviews. His "no oil" claim is that he adds oil after cooking the food. My trio plate was drenched in oil and I still have a stomach ache from it. Flavoring of spices was rather bland compared to the Indian food I have had at other restaurants. Bread was oily snd nothing special. I believe the spices would have stood out more (maybe) if there wasn't so much oil. Way overpriced for what you get. Sad about this experience. read more

Pains me to give them this rating, the owner here is very nice, however he seems reluctant to change for bad items and mistakes. The other day I ordered 2 mango lassis and a rock shrimp chutney. Mango Lassis were amazing, smooth, rich, and creamy. However the rock shrimp were not rock shrimp. They were sad tiny little bay shrimp instead. I let him know the next day and after refusing a refund I got replacement items, another 2 mango lassis and samosa chaat. On top of this he showed me the "rock shrimp" they use, which turned out to be a frozen bag of white shrimp. I advised him to fix it on the menu but not sure he will do that. When i got home and tastes the new mango lassis, i noticed a drastic difference from yesterdays. Todays was very sour and bad and I wont risk getting sick on bad yogurt. I called him to let him know first but he just said thats how it is. So if how it is, is misleading customers and serving food/drinks that can get people sick, then I have to advise anyone to either go somewhere else or be very critical of things you eat here for your safety. read more

We saw this highly rated chain with multiple locations in the area and were excited to try! When we walked in the service was very kind and personable, and it was cool that the kitchen is kind of open so sitting on the side near the wall you can see exactly how your dishes are made. The space was fairly small and squishy, but not unhomey. The concept of Indian fusion was really interesting and I liked perusing the menu options including enchiladas, samosas, curries, etc. I was a bit shocked at how pricey the items are especially for the size - I was about to try the Rose Mango Dreams ravioli which sounded like such interesting Indian/Mexican fusion but upon looking the dish up on Yelp and realizing it's like 5 small ravioli for $20 decided upon the New Zealand Lamb Curry ($26) instead. My husband tried the Chicken Breast Tender Enchilada ($18). The flavors just didn't make it for us, with the enchilada not really good Mexican nor good Indian flavors and not much flavor to the rice either. The curry was okay and the vegetables with it didn't particularly pair with the dish but just added nutrition. While Avatar's seems to be a popular place to dine and hang out (nice outdoor seating with lights too), I guess the food just didn't cut it for me, both in terms of deliciousness and price. read more

Great food and service! Very warm, welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommend. The menu is Punjabi fusion. There are Mexican fusion dishes, like the Punjabi enchiladas. These are very popular and quite good. You can choose almost any kind of meat or veggie (except pork), and you can specify how spicy you like it. We chose spicy shrimp, and they were delicious! We also split the yoghurt chicken, which came out looking more like a mole or a curry because of the cashew mango chutney sauce. The chicken was incredibly tender and delicious. The veggies were wonderful. Both dishes came with basmati rice with peas. So soft and fluffy, with a hint of saffron. Loved it! Also, we started with samosas, which were crunchy on the outside, filled with tasty potatoes and peas on the inside. So good! My friend and I ordered sabe cocktails, which was the only thing we did not love. Ashok (the owner) came to greet us and answered all our questions. While we considered what to order, Ashok was chatting away with locals who have been coming to Avatar's for years. He seemed to know their families and favorite foods. So nice to see! Parking is easy to find in the lot, especially when Bank of Marin is closed. Very cozy seat set up, mostly tables for two. Overall, enjoyed this place and will be coming back. It was tender and flavorful, with hints of spice and citrus/tangy. Served with a side of rice that complimented the meat really well. - Jerk Chicken Enchiladas: Really tasty as well! I had a lovely lunch with an old friend at Avatar. We were warmly greeted by the owner and seated by the window. Our foodie adventure began with gluten free Samosas that came with a yogurt sauce. Delicious. Then we got the warm spinach salad with giant prawns in garlic butter. The salad was divine. After that we split the pumpkin crab Punjab enchiladas with long grain basmati rice in saffron. My old favorite. We washed it all down with a Chai Latte and a mango shake. Dessert was a unique ice cream tart covered in pistachios and sitting in a raspberry sauce. It went quick. Everything was fresh, superb, and memorable. I love the cozy atmosphere and the stellar service. This is still one of the best restaurants in Marin. The food is interesting and tasty. He greeted us and started off with, "Are you ready to eat the best meal of your life?". Let me tell you, I think this is far from it. It's a very acquired taste - a fusion of Indian, Italian, and Mexican. We ordered the Rose Dream Raviolis, the Fettuccine, and the Samosa Plate off the menu. The owner made up 2 off-the-menu items - essentially the Raviolis in a curry sauce and the Punjabi Enchiladas with a 'special vegetable mix' made of pumpkin inside. The raviolis were in an Alfredo sauce with a sweet rose/mango sauce on top. There were 4 single raviolis for $20 - I don't mind paying for good food, but I wasn't a fan of the cuisine mix. The curry sauce in the ravioli and the fettuccine just tasted heavily of garam masala. I will say, the Samosas were very good and my parents were fans of the off-the-menu Punjabi Enchiladas they made. The staff is very friendly and there is plenty of parking. Avatars is a hidden gem of a restaurant. They are known for their "Marindian" (Marin + Indian) fusion food. The owner Ashok is one of the nicest people who I feel in my heart truly enjoys creating food, owning his businesses and making a good impression to invite you back. Ashok asks "Are you ready for the best food you have had in your life!?" We ordered a few appetizers to share..the veggie samosas, the mushrooms and the blackened jumbo prawns. The flavors are bold, fresh prawns, it gives you a glimpse of the entrees to come. Both of us ordered two things off the menu which was fish (grilled and curry). We also ordered the chicken curry over rice and a plate of their crab enchilada. Let me tell you..the food was truly excellent! From the freshness, large portions, Indian fusion flavors (they also ask what spice level you want so you can go as hot as you want!) to colorful presentation, you cant go wrong with any dish here. I did notice that everyone's entrée had rice on the side and my plate in particular, the fish and veggies got loaded on top of the rice so my rice was soaked and soggy. It's a small thing but was really looking forward to getting bites of basmati rice (not wet rice). The dessert is a MUST TRY! They only have one which is the Avatar's Dream. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. We came here to celebrate my birthday and completely regretted it. The owner handed us menus, then came back and told us not to use them because he would "decide" what we should eat. He turned the whole thing into some ridiculous guessing game about ingredients, promising free food if we guessed right. Nothing about it was fun--just awkward and pushy. We ordered tea for six people, yet he brought tea for all eight of us and still charged us for it. The tea was awful and insanely overpriced. Without really asking, he brought out three vegetarian dishes that he claimed we'd like. They were terrible. We then ordered four non-vegetarian dishes and could barely eat any of them. He calls it "fusion," but apparently that just means dumping sugar into everything. The jerk chicken was drowned in brown sugar and still somehow dry and tough. The so-called "Kama Sutra" dish was hands down the worst thing I have ever eaten--so bad it's honestly unforgettable. One friend ordered a shrimp dish that was overly sweet with completely burnt vegetables. The food was disgusting, the prices were outrageous, and the entire experience felt like a scam. This place is massively overrated and not worth a single dollar. The atmosphere remains incredible, with striking art on the walls and a small but well organized dinning space. The staff are incredibly attentive ensuring everyone is taken care of throughout the experience. The food is nothing short of phenomenal. You are guaranteed to have an incredible meal when dinning here. By far, the worst food experience. A group of us went to celebrate a friend's birthday...all of us being foodies and super excited after a morning of hiking. The host/owner gave us a lengthy spiel about how wonderful his creations are....he gave us the menu and then said 'I'll make something special' to each one of us!! Out of the 8 friends in our group, 5-6 of us left the restaurant hungry as we sent our plates back to the kitchen, 80-90% of the food left on the plate - some burnt, some too tough to chew and some too sweet and over spiced (not spicy) food. We were not offered a replacement meal nor credit. Extremely overpriced food, loaded with garam masala and brown sugar.....sadly over $250 of our hard earned money, down the drain!!!
