My wife and I were a little hangry after a nice hike, and finding two restaurants closed that said they were open on their website (updating your hours cannot be that hard!). Fortunately this place was right next door to one of them. The smell drew us in. Mixed Veggie Burrito: 3.5/5. I enjoyed having a burrito encased in Indian bread and the veggies had a nice flavor. Overall it was "pretty good", but I would like to try other things in the menu. The woman behind the counter was very nice, and while there are not a lot of tables there, the street outside the restaurant is pretty quiet, which makes for some nice outdoor dining. read more

The wraps all have rice, chana (garbanzo beans) and veggies wrapped inside a roti. There are several options to add either extra vegetables or meats - we added smoked eggplant. The wrap was delicious - it really hit the spot. It was seasoned and spiced very well and that made all the difference. Punjabi Mexican fusion didn't feel like a great combo but once I tasted the food, I realized the flavors are still pretty authentic. To their benefit the Aunty who makes the food there retains a lot of the flavor but still makes it healthy. The portions disappointed a few of the folks but my spinach tofu hit the spot! My significant other and I were stopping by after a lengthy and arduous hike closeby. We both love indian food and were stoked to try this fusion. We both ordered and shared the curried lamb and curried chicken. When the food arrived, we both took a few bites and were surprised that it was all undercooked. The rice and potatoes were extremely raw and felt it was boiled for likely a few minutes max. We both ate the entire thing out of need to refuel but appalled this place has quite the high reviews. What a fantastic idea: Indian Burrito. I asked the owner how long the restaurant has been around: 25 years! Wow. And here I never knew this gem was in Mill Valley. First off, they had options of mango, plain or Rose lassi . I tried the Rose lassi, and it was superb! Light, ephemeral after taste of rose. I recommend it. For lunch I tried the Curry pumpkin curry chicken burrito. Imagine wrapped in whole wheat Indian bread: Curried garbanzo beans Basmati rice, Fresh herb salsa, Chutney, Carrot pickle, and Tamarind sauce. The combination of flavors was amazing, and I look forward to trying more of their menu. They also had rice plates (not just Indian burritos), so if you're in the mood for a plate instead of a wrap, you can have that too. I look forward to going to Avatar again. read more

Concise menu and quick service. Watch out: they are CASH ONLY. I would say avoid the soups. The burritos and platters are pretty good. Rice, garbanzo curry, yogurt and Indian chutneys for sauces. Went there on the weekend with family. One of the family members have onion and garlic sensitivity and we specifically asked if the dish ordered has them or not. We were told clearly that it did not. Wrong. There was onion in the curry and it caused a major flare up that has lasted for well over three days now. Transparency is good to have. Pathetic quantity for high prices. It was $17 for one ravioli dish which was just mango pulp We went to this restaurant as a family of four. Unfortunately the food did not live up to the expectations of the reviews. The price was way too high for small quantity. The rose mango dreams cost $17 and was just four pieces of ravioli. The flavors of the dish came from the rose syrup and mango pulp. While the flavors were a unique taste, the quantity and price weren't reasonable. The shrimp and rice enchiladas and salmon had a decent taste but still was not worth it. The dessert was $9 dollars was a very small slice. The flavors were again rose and mango with hints of chocolate. The pricing for the dessert was extremely high. Overall the flavors of this restaurant are decent but too overpriced. Sanitation Issue. SO unfortunate. Was truly looking forward to taking out some Indidan food. The owner greeted me promptly and was friendly -- however -- the same hands that was handling plates and money, dirty cash money, grabbed a somosa without washing his hands. Then he tried to convince me that he was a nutritionist, and there was nothing wrong with it. As an immunousppressed person, I was not convinced. He asked one of his assistants to make the somosas. They were overpriced and oddly flavored, (and I have had several thousand Indian meals, from many regions). The lassi tasted watery, and frankly the worst rose lassi I had tasted. Avatars is a good fast food option in a town with shockingly few. Mill Valley, meet the Indian burrito, with pumpkin or eggplant and veggie or meat options, including lamb and chicken. For less than $11 a burrito, cash only btw, you can grab and go and try something a little unusual. It's turned out to be a recipe for success, causing them to open another burrito shop just down the road in Tiburon, and yet another in Larkspur. I admittedly find the Indian version of burrito skin a little chewy and powdery, so I tend to order their rice plate, which is a bargain and far more my speed, mainly because it looks lovely on the plate and has a little bit of everything to try, separated out. The female owner is friendly and straight to the point. You'll find very limited seating here: a few rickety tables inside and a few outside. Its a good, quick option if you are looking for grab and go in downtown Mill Valley. Try the rose or mango lassie. read more

Good tasty food but adjusted to the western palate. Nevertheless tasty and light. Doesn't make you feel full. Also it was a warm day and so we ate outside, this makes the experience better. The service is good. We were new there and the lady said she'll surprise us. She did and the choice was simple. We got rice with sag paneer and chole. and the burrito must have been sweet potato and pineapple in sweet and sour sauce. Both were good. BTW they take only cash. The lady at the counter is good and is easy to converse with. Overall a good place to go if you on that side of the bay. Otherwise the toll + drive, I'm not sure if its worth it. Super friendly staff and plenty of easy parking. It's a good place for kids. I don't like their food as I find it has too many flavors. I prefer something basic with saffron or turmeric and good, simple ingredients suited to my dosha. The chefs here seem to think the more flavors you put into something the better. I don't like garlic or onions or complex flavors as a pitta dosha. My wife, as a kapha who needs many flavors to fire her up, loves this place and I respect that. This review is for the little store downtown Mill Valley which I think is better that other branches Ive been to. Surprisingly great Indian Food. Hits the holy trinity of Good, Cheap and Fast! And it's really good. Lots of vegan options. I always get one of the plates. This pumpkin curry is great as is the smoked eggplant and their saag "paneer" dish (spinach) which is made with tofu instead cheese. All plates come with a main, super long grain basmati, three outstanding chutneys that they make in house and chickpeas (channa masala) that like other items, is better than versions served in many sit down indian restaurants. Wow what a great little place tucked away in the middle of mill valley!! I really like their unique idea of Indian food in a burrito concept! My friend and I had just finished a hike in the golden gate national recreation park area and were ready to chow down on some good food. I searched using yelp and when we saw the "punjabi burritos" headline we both knew we had to check it out. And it didn't disappoint! My friend got a chicken curry burrito and while I was tempted to get a burrito also, the "whole wheat wrap" steered me to the rice plate instead. So I chose the eggplant with chicken curry rice plate. We didn't have to wait long. However, instead of eggplant I got squash in my chicken curry instead. Just a little snafoo that was quickly corrected - they gave me a small side of eggplant. It was good and my friend really liked his burrito so I was willing to overlook this little mistake. Overall, our leap of faith with this find was a success! We'll definitely be back to test out more of their dishes. Also I could have jumped up and down with joy when I saw the "no dairy" and "no gluten" words pasted on their menu. Because of those four little words, I instantly fell in love with this place. PS. They only take cash. I didn't see a sign anywhere that said "Cash Only" but the huge ATM machine on the wall was my first clue and the second was the missing credit card machine near their register. read more

Maybe the food is alright but I'll never know! If i can't get the part where I'm greeted and order I can never get to the part where I give you my money and patronage. The lady behind the counter could not be bothered to acknowledge me- the only customer in the room- and put her mask on. She was too busy counting her stacks of dollar bills and having a speaker phone conversation to say "hi, welcome in" or " let me know when you're ready" I stood there, invisible for an excruciatingly long 3 minutes before she asked what I would like. I asked " what would you recommend?" And again with the money counting and silent treatment. The whole thing lasted 5 minutes tops but they lost my business forever It doesn't take much to make me happy when I eat out. Say "Hi" and be nice. I adore restaurants that fuse ethnic cuisines with Mexican staples like tacos and burritos. Avatar's Indian burritos knock the category out of the park. They're giant and bangin' with Indian flavors. I loved the lamb with eggplant. The ground lamb was flavorful and a great complement to the chick peas, rice, and Indian salsa inside the special Indian whole wheat wrap. The restaurant itself is very small, with only a few tables and 6 seats, so it's best to take your burrito to go. read more

The first time I went to Avatar's was their Larkspur location. it was a great experience I am happy to say was repeated at the Mill Valley location. Indian food served with a twist and tastiness that brought me back. I recommend trying the specials This time it was a Great special in the form of a turkey and sweet potato rice plate plate thing. Super yum and gone all to quickly! They also have Bundaberg Ginger Beer here. Thins of it as a ginger ale with big brass balls. Best non-alcoholic thing they could have had to go along with the plate. Hint: They do have a bathroom here and it's clean. You just have to ask.
