I usually drop in to order at random when I'm craving a bit of spice in my life and they're always so welcoming. Their chicken korma thali is absolutely to die for and I've never left the establishment dissatisfied with the quality (or portions) of food. I even stopped by a few months back while I was feeling a bit under the weather and the waitress, who recognized me from previous visits, was kind enough to bring me a complimentary bowl of soup to help me feel better while I waited for my order! With their new location, since they recently moved, I would say is so much better given the more open concept of the layout that allows for natural sunlight. One of the best indian Cafés I've ever tried. Service was very friendly and helpful in choosing my dishes, professional and welcoming. Food was amazing, I had some whole wheat chapati, chicken samosas, and spinach kebab with sauces. Very flavourful and complex in taste, simple at the same time. Not a terrible establishment on its own, but when compared to most Indian cuisine, spices and flavor are lacking. I dont consider myself to be that picky with food either, but this was just OK and i wouldn't recommend this spot for something in Sausalito. if you are looking for very authentic indian food i wouldn't recommend this place, and i think Sausalito has better restaurants in general with the area specializing in other cuisines. It was my first time to ever try Indian food. Friend noted it is not that great. It was good enough for a first timer like me. My friend and I loved the chicken (with soup in the picture) with the naan bread. The naan bread was truly yummy. Barbecue chicken for first timers like me was yummy. I came to Sartaj on a weekday evening and it was easy to get a table inside. It's such a cute place on the outside and cozy inside. My favorite thing about Sartaj is that they have dairy chai and a dairy-free chai! PLUS, it is available during dinner for costumers to serve themselves. The food was super yummy! Sartaj is a North Indian restaurant with outdoor and indoor dining. The chicken tikka marsala with basmati rice I had for a late lunch was tepid (not hot). I also ordered almond milk chai. The dispenser for this is self service but only had a mouthful's worth. Had to wait a long, long time to get my beverage. The place was super busy mid afternoon! Guess the kitchen was too swamped with groups of (majority) Indian diners. But that's a good sign, right? On the fence about trying again as the chicken was dry and needed salt. Dropped in on a Sunday. Few empty tables so business was brisk. We were 5 and ordered Bhindi, Malai Kofta, Garlic Basil Chicken Kebab and Mixed tandoori platter along with appetizers. Requested medium spicy The hara kebab was crisp, not oily. You get 5 pcs. A plate of samosas gets you two pieces. Both were easy on the tummy, mildly spiced and tasty. The chutneys were meh. Entrees: I suppose if you are out of towners or want what passes for typical north indian food, the veggie entrees will do. The tandoori platter was a train wreck. You can see the red chilli powder that the chicken and lamb was doused with. One bite and one of the guests cleared all sinuses and orifices. The garlic in the garlic basil made the chicken bitter and dry. Our food had hair in every dish except the rice. It was a windy day but c'mon Service: Food comes out hot and fast. Food quality/taste was just OK at best, and I really didn't appreciate the huge plate of white rice [glycemic index anyone?] forced upon me as 'included' , and of course inflating the $tab, and no substitutions were available either. With a bit of work, effort and thoughtfulness, Sartaj could be a nice destination, but, there's simply too many better food/quality/service/value alternatives close by to second-chance this spot, which is a shame. Sartaj India Cafe is a great tasting Indian restaurant in Sausalito! It is off the main road, but totally within walking distance of Sausalito's main tourist area. We came here on a Saturday evening and dined outside where outdoor tables and chairs were set up. Caledonia street was blocked off to vehicles in order for outdoor dining to be set up on the street. We ordered ahead on the phone and walked over to the restaurant, so we didn't have to wait very long for our food. I ordered the Goldy Special Fish Tikka Masala Thali ($13.95), which is tilapia fish cooked in a creamy tomato based sauce. This dish was REALLY GOOD!!! There were plenty of chunks of tilapia and it was nicely cooked, and not deep fried. The creamy tomato sauce was very tasty and went very well with the fish! The dish also came with mixed veggies, which were really good, a piece of Indian tortilla called chapathi, rice, and some raita. It was a very delicious and satisfying meal! We also ordered the Raj Special Vegan Plate with Dhal ($10.95), which is mixed veggie stew, rice, and chapatti. It came with garbanzo beans and was pretty good! They have a good selection of vegetarian and some vegan dishes. They even separate their menu to section vegetarian and non-vegetarian items. I didn't realize till after dinner, but they have a really good hot chai tea! It's not too sweet, but they offer sugar on the side for those that want their tea sweeter. Overall, we had an excellent dinner at Sartaj India Cafe! The restaurant is really small already so being able to eat outside is a plus. The food is excellent and the chai tea is fantastic! Service was also really good. I am definitely looking forward to eating here again. Currently, they are doing take-out and dine outside options. Sartaj India Cafe is one of those friendly neighborhood restaurants that turns out surprisingly AMAZING food! It doesn't look like much from the outside, but wait until you try their curries! The menu is split into a non-veg and veg section, and you simply can't go wrong with any of their thali plates, which come with a choice of curry along with basmati rice and a chapati flatbread, along with a couple other sides! I started with the lamb korma thali, which was simply mind-blowing! You can customize the spice level of the curries, and spicy is the only way to go! The coconut milk curry was super creamy and came with tender pieces of lamb, sliced almonds, and raisins, which yielded a perfect balance of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors that went perfectly with the rice and chapati. The thali also came with a potato samosa, along with an herb chutney and tamarind chutney for dipping. The samosa was unlike most I've had--the dough was particularly thick (very bready), and I believe the samosa was baked rather than deep-fried. Unlike the curries, however, the samosa filling and chutneys were relatively bland and didn't particularly stand out. I asked for a recommendation for a vegetarian thali, and our server immediately suggested the Mattar Paneer, a delicious, creamy tikka masala curry enveloping cubes of paneer and green peas. In contrast to the korma, this curry was on the sweet/acidic side (thanks to the tomatoes), but it too came with a nice spicy kick! The sauce was the perfect complement to the paneer cheese and the sweet peas, and the plate also came with a delicious dal (lentils) and raita (yogurt sauce) to make for a complete meal! I really enjoyed Sartaj. It has a great outdoor seating area on a parklet. It's also easier to park around here than in the more touristy parts of Sausalito. I got the Bhindi do Pyaza Thali and it was excellent both in quality and in value. It is better than most of the Indian food I have had in SF. I would highly recommend. read more

Just went for dinner last night for the first time in their new location, which is next-door to the old one. The new location and service were lovely. The food however, was nowhere near as good as it used to be. It's really too bad. We had several dishes that we've had before. The flavors and quality were just not good. They were edible but not very tasty and, weirdly, the dishes sort of tasted like they had sugar or some kind of sweetener in them, which is not typical for any of those dishes. We eat Indian food regularly and, sadly, we will not be back to the "new" Sartaj unless something changes. Seems like someone is putting a lot of money into this new iteration of the restaurant, but isn't paying attention to the most important thing: the flavor and quality of the food. They need to hire a good cook and not skimp on the flavor. It was evident that others have the same opinion. The vegetable chowmien was hard to swallow as the taste was pretty unusual. It tasted salt less in a sense. The Gobi in the gobi Manchurian wasn't crispy and it was actually soggy. The vegetables in the Manchurian weren't crispy either. They were so-so. The paneer tikka was pretty decent. The daal makhni was good.
