I used Avid Handyman Services in January-February 2018 and now having experienced working with another contractor I would not recommend Avid. We were about 80% happy with the job in the end, but only because we checked daily on work being done and had to ask repeatedly for mistakes to be corrected. In particular, the reason we went with Avid Handyman was because we wanted to have our cabinets refinished and Anton promised to sand them and spray them professionally in his studio. Once work on the apartment began, Anton's crew began to use rollers on the cabinets on site. When we asked Anton about this, he said they would look great and this is what he recommended, which was the opposite of what he had told us previously when trying to get our business. We trusted him at the time and so we allowed them to begin painting the cabinets. When we reviewed the work there was obvious orange peel texture where rollers were being used, not the "factory finish" promised. When we pushed again to have the cabinets sprayed as had originally been agreed upon, Anton again tried to say that this was just as good. After much pushing, he finally agreed to bring the cabinet doors to his studio where they were sanded and sprayed and looked lovely in the end. The cabinet boxes were not painted as neatly, however. Nothing was taped off and so there was paint on the underside of the granite counters and on the granite backsplash. We also had our apartment painted by Avid handyman Services and nails in the wall from previous owners were painted over rather than removed and puttied. We've since worked with other painters for whom it is standard practice to prep a wall for painting. My experience with Anton left me distrustful and feeling taken advantage of. I would recommend looking elsewhere. read more

Damaged my sink carpet and wall no professionalism whatsoever ever

I don't usually write reviews but seeing as the positive Yelp reviews attracted me to this company, I thought I would try and protect others from what I experienced. Avid Handyman messed up my closet doors three times then walked off the job leaving the work incomplete midway through. After calling for weeks with no response as to when then we're going to return to finish the job. They had the nerve to try and collect payment for not only what was quoted but the additional hours they spent fixing their own mistakes. They then told me the company was under new ownership because they couldn't recover from such obvious negligence, (I documented everything) even the person collecting money for them said this was a common occurrence and she's heard horror stories from many clients but if I didn't pay it was the guys doing the work that would suffer and not get paid. That broke my heart as the guys doing the work were trying their best but were incorrectly managed doing work that was outside of their skill set and with not enough help.ie one man doing a job that requires an extra set of hands do purely to logistics. I often found myself helping out with small things like holding things for them ect because I felt so bad they obviously needed the extra help. After all that, I had to have everything ripped out and redone by a real professional so I ended up under construction for twice as long and paying for the work twice. I would probably sue them if it wouldn't waste more time and money. If Anton is still in charge you should run the other direction as fast as you can. Use anyone else. read more

The most current and satisfying job was when he refinishing my beautiful Hardwood floors. They were dull and worn and when he was done they looked amazing! Can't recommend Avid enough. I woke up yesterday with a slow leak in my bathroom ceiling and specifically called Avid based on previous well-reviewed work from another owner in my condo. I was advised to send photos to the info email on their site. I heard back within 30 minutes that they could have someone out the next morning but then they realized Anton would be next-door later that day so he stopped by. He confirmed the roof was dry given the prior tropical storm and predicted it was coming from the unit above. I said I would get in touch with the owner (offsite) and get back to Avid. Well the leak progressed and I got the tenant to allow Anton in to assess their unit - again, same day. Also while here, Anton tore down the saturated bathroom ceiling to prevent further damage. The water was contained to a slow drip into a bucket vs traveling to other parts of the condo. There was literally water coming into my apartment last night but I was able to sleep thanks to Anton's responsiveness and professionalism. A plumber was here today - it was a water heater failure and they'll be replacing it tomorrow. It's an old building so once I know the water issue is over, I 100% plan to have Avid back to repair my bathroom walls. read more

Anton and his guys are terrific. I contacted three persons to do this job, and he is the only one being responsive, professional and also do high quality work. The job is fixing a hole and tiling up that part in my bathroom. Since I went for an economic solution and the old tiles are hard to find, Anton and I decided that it would be good to go for a complete different tile pattern to mix with the old one that look good. The whole job took one day and one extra hour. They come in, manage all the existing conditions of the old wall/tile, redo some of the loose tiles, and install the new tiles. To start off, BEWARE: The owner is the most rudest and unreasonable person I have ever spoken to. After moving from nyc, I decided to get my paintings and pictures put up in our new place and unfortunately came across avid handyman since the reviews seemed reasonable. The person I spoke to first was Valerie and she seemed very polite and understanding... we agreed upon the job and I told her it's simply putting pictures and paintings on the wall and the hardest part was a mirror which my husband can help the handyman with. The same job in NYC was worth $150 and so that's what I was expecting. However, the day of the job came and the person who came was much older in age, was on the phone multiple times, went down a few times to get his stuff (and apparently all that leisurely time is included in the per hour rate) Next thing I get a bill for $225. When I called to reason out with the owner these are the the arguments he made: 1. We had to get a COI to enter the building: you need to get a COI to enter any apartment building in jersey city or nyc. 2. We used our own hardware: well we had our hardware but your handyman wanted to use his own. 3. We had to find parking: That is a lie because our building allowed him to park his van right upfront in their garage. 4. Our competitors don't do all this: yes they do, you are deluded if you think this is the only company that needs to get COI or get hardware or find parking. 5. And the rudest of all, while talking to me he said "I have wasted so much time on this by taking to you over the phone" Thats the worst customer service I have ever come across. Overall, If you want to be yelled at by the rude owner whose arguments make no sense or are willing to pay hourly for someone who is deliberately pushing the clock by being on the phone multiple times or going up and down to get hardware or taking his sweet time then this is the service for you! I was going to get my lighting done but I think this company's competitors will be more professional and will have a much reasonable owner and better workers working for them. I wanted to make sure to spread the word and wanted to inform my fellow yelpers because I looked at yelp and decided to choose this extremely unreasonable and rude company. Mr. Owner if you think you don't have enough time to talk to your customers then you shouldn't be in this business plus your customers themselves are quite busy with jobs, businesses and kids yet they have the time to talk to you about your unfair bill and service! From plumbing to painting to re-grouting, these guys even have a wood shop where they brought a couple of heirloom family pieces back to life. I hired Avid Handyman Services to come to my apartment and hang two 5 foot pottery barn shelves. They scheduled the appointment quickly and efficiently for the next day at 11:00am. By 12:15pm the following day I called because no one ever showed up. I was told I wasn't placed in the books, no big deal. They sent someone over shortly after and the handyman forgot a stud finder. He drilled at least 6 holes in my wall, continuously dropping screws and spent half the time on the floor picking them up. After about 45 minutes and not one shelf hung he called for back up. Two additional handymen showed up within twenty minutes and had to assist him. Basically one handyman took 1:30 hours to hang one shelf by the time the two others showed up they got the second shelf hung in ten minutes. All three men were nice and courteous but my walls were completely scuffed up - even one guy mentioned coming back to paint them but never returned. I ended up having to use a magic eraser and still have marks in the walls. I won't be using them again. After I received and invoice for 2 hours of work (should have only taken 45 min max) I emailed the company expressing my concerns. I have not heard back. You're better off asking your neighbor to come help you hang a shelf and doing it yourself since they sent over someone who had no clue. read more

We hired Avid to remove carpets and refinish our hardwood floors, re-tile our bathroom floors, replace a kitchen sink, and carry out various other minor handyman repairs in a two family house in Jersey City Heights. They were able to start working on our project very quickly, the quality of the work was high, and they were transparent about the costs, even suggesting that I not ask them to do certain jobs (like install carpets or redo a counter top) because it would be more expensive then just going directly to companies that specialize in those projects. My one criticism is that they ended up taking several days longer than initially estimated, and were not able to complete everything within our restricted timeframe. This was due in part to unforeseen difficulties in the property (not their fault), but was also due to the fact that they take on many jobs simultaneously, and couldn't consistently work full-time on our project until completed. We would definitely hire them again for smaller handyman jobs, but for larger projects would instead hire a general contractor. read more
