Our contact with Avila Construction and its owner, Mr. Carlos Avila, occurred quite by chance...or was it truly just by chance? In the first week of October 2023, we had hired a recommended handyman with painting experience. His work was acceptable, so we asked him if he could get the entire interior painted, including installing crown molding throughout the house, before our son's visit for Christmas on December 20. He assured us that he could. However, on December 3, we finally decided that we needed to find someone else to take over the job. A hurried search turned up a local painting contractor who had nine "verified reviews" on Home Advisor, averaging 4.7. We met with him in the evening of December 3, and "voila!" He just happened to have finished a project and was available to get started the next day, which was a Monday. Given the shortness of time and the unavailability of other contractors who could finish the project by our deadline, this appeared to be a reasonably safe choice. So much for "Internet reviews!" This selection brought us the "Contractor from Hell." After the first day, our cozy, well-kept home had been reduced to shambles and resembled a construction zone. There were small piles of sanding dust and paint remnants all over the papered floor upstairs, waiting to be tracked all through the house. The dust storm was primarily in our master bedroom and wardrobe area where we had stored high quality clothing. There had been no plan to contain the dust or to even vacuum it up while working or before leaving at 4:00 PM, which should have been a "no-brainer" given that we were planning to sleep in the house that night. There was so much dust settling out of the air in the evening that neither my wife nor I could breathe easily and certainly could not sleep. So, we got up at 12:30 AM and worked nonstop throughout the night until 9:00 AM to clean up the mess. My wife continued working until 1:00 PM that afternoon. The previous day had truly turned into an unthinking assault on our serenity and health that could not be restored easily days later. Enter (stage right), Mr. Carlos Avila of Avila Construction. In the aftermath of the disaster of December 4 that had left my wife and I shocked and reeling in disbelief that we had let something as stupid as this happen to us, I had reached out for urgent help and had left a message on a website that listed contractors. Carlos had responded within a short time, and I ended up talking to him by phone and laying out the whole, dirty, distressing project and our dilemma in getting the place ready for the Christmas holiday. Carlos had surprised me with the warmth and empathy that he had expressed, as well as the information that he supplied. Though busy, he was willing to try to help us get to our goal on time. The happy ending to my tale is that Carlos and his crew, including, especially his lead painter, Christian, were phenomenal in stepping in on December 12 with well thought-out plans and execution that created a marvelous contrast to our hellish, earlier experience and had resulted in wrapping up things by the end of December 17, three days before the goal. Carlos had initially expected to be done no later than December 22, but had set the goal for December 20. This is a perfect example of under promising and over delivering. He met the goal by astutely splitting our project into two phases, the last of which was postponed and completed January 15-18. Needless to say, Carlos is a master of organization, attention to detail, and punctuality. His crew works efficiently and quickly to complete highly professional work. He takes pride in his ability to accomplish a project with minimal disruption to the homeowners' lives. We did not have to worry at all about our furnishings and other belongings in the home. And, most importantly, each day after work, he ensured that our home was left clean and orderly, something that we greatly appreciated. We are tremendously pleased with the outcome and most certainly will turn to Carlos and crew with peace of mind in the future, when we have other projects to undertake. Further, we highly recommend them to other homeowners for whom quality and high standards are paramount. So, was our connection with Avila Construction by chance? We purchased our home in 2020 right before it got crazy with the market. There was not much to choose from so we purchased a home that needed a lot of work. Little by little we have been fixing it up. But when it came to replacing the 1960's windows we had, all the local window shops had been to busy to reach back to us or very over priced. I got a hold of Carlos from Avila construction and from the very start Carlos was very punctual with his appointment. He stopped by and measured the windows. He did not have to redo any framing. It was all fit to my current size windows. Later that day he sent me a quote that was very reasonable. He said if I wanted to proceed he could have the work done in 3 weeks. We recently bought a condo in Hueneme Bay which needed a lot of work. We chose Avila Construction because they are local to Port Hueneme and had great reviews on Yelp. Our first project with Avila was the courtyard. Among other things, they removed the old concrete and and replaced it with beautiful pavers. The old drain was a small circular drain several feet in from the sides of the courtyard, and it wasn't effective in channeling rain into the drain. Further, the slope needed to channel water into the drain was noticeable and the drain itself affected where you could place the furniture. Carlos recommended a linear drain, which he placed discreetly along the edge of the new garage wall they installed. The linear drain works beautifully and is actually aesthetically pleasing, in contrast to the small round drain originally there. The new courtyard has a very gentle slope toward the drain, but the slope is not noticeable. Furthermore, because of Carlos' design we did not have to put any steps in so the transition from house to courtyard is on pretty much the same level. Our second project with Avila was our kitchen. We had to replace the entire kitchen, including the floor. For our budget, Carlos recommended white Shaker cabinets and quartz countertops. We decided on bar handles and really like them, and our quartz countertop ("Carrara Mist") is so beautiful. They added a ledge on the window which really is a classy (as well as useful) touch. They also mudded over the cinder block at our request, which looks much nicer. One of Carlos' recommendations was to extend the flooring underneath the lower cabinets all the way to the walls, and we really like that. Carlos' experience really helped us make decisions as to appliances, styles and products along the way. We were astonished at how beautiful it is. Carlos and his team did a wonderful job on both projects that exceeded our hopes and expectations, and we plan to use Avila for our remaining projects (bathrooms and interior doors). read more
