Currently renting a vehicle from this location thanks to Avis rep and miracle worker Tabitha, who made several phone calls to secure their last available truck. At 10 pm the night before our last leg to Fairbanks, Enterprise sent me an email stating that they could no longer honor the reservation I'd made four weeks prior. I was scrambling to find a new vehicle for hours and finally booked one on Avis's website shortly before landing. However, the one I'd booked (as well as the others listed) were no longer available. To say Tabitha went above and beyond is a severe understatement - she was so kind and understanding of our predicament and made sure we weren't stranded even though she really didn't have an obligation to do so. On top of that, she made sure we had all the details we needed to make informed decisions on which additional services to purchase, went through instructions on how to drive safely in the snow and ice, and made suggestions for places to stop and fuel up on snacks and beverages. We also talked about how well the owners of this Avis treat their employees and have taken care of them throughout the pandemic. While Enterprise and their subsidiaries are no longer a safe bet for me (especially in a place where getting stranded can quickly become a health hazard), it's safe to say that I'm now a loyal Avis customer thanks to Tabitha. This is by far the worst Avis I've ever been to. They gave me a huge deal about the discount code on my account and associated rate. They wanted to see proof that I was an employee of "Parks and Wildlife". I'm not an employee of "Parks and Wildlife" and I don't think there is a company that exists with that name. I told her I was a govt employee and was happy to show proof of that but had no idea what "Parks and Wildlife" was. She said I'd have to default to a higher rate if I couldn't prove it. Finally the manager came over and told her to just honor the rate, which was fortunate. But for the record, I looked up what discount code I have associated with my account and as expected, its the Federal government discount code. So they gave me heat for no reason and I have no idea what the lady was even talking about. Also, they said that if I broke down, I was responsible for any costs for roadside service or anything. Upon getting the rental vehicle yesterday at 7:29pm on 4/19/26, the vehicle had a cut/cigarette burn in the back seat. Front driver seat has a white stain across the seat.... The entire rear pump has a scratch the length of the trunk.. The fact these are still being rented out in this condition is WILDDDDDDDD.... The rental process was a little tedious, but the vehicle was in good shape and worked well. I filled the car with gas before returning it. The self inspection shows this and the rental receipt. However, I was charged a fee for not filling up the car. I called and explained my situation multiple times, and each time they told me the manager, Tabitha, would call me back. They are horrible. I was never notified about a full day rental penalty for any late return, even for 1 minutes. They have the right to establish policies such as this, however they also have a responsibility to provide timely and reasonable notification. They didn't notify me. I figured it out when I reviewed the agreement emailed to me. I had made arrangements for an attraction which would make it difficult to get back by their deadline. I took into consideration that I might have to pay for one or two hours extra. I didn't imagine that I would have to pay $135 even if I am 1 minute late. I spoke with 3 representatives of Avis. Rented a premium SUV (Ford Expedition or similar) a month in advance, but when I arrived at the desk after an unreasonably long wait, the employee looked in a drawer and told me they didn't have the car I wanted and offered me a Chrysler Pacifica. Who the heck wants a Chrysler Pacifica? I said no thank you, I wanted something with 4WD. She offered me an AWD Kia Sorrento and said she would knock $10 off the daily rate. We had to do an annoying self inspection that I've never seen before. The clerk was not even apologetic about it. Why bother letting people rent a certain car class if you're not going to honor it? And every other time I've rented from Avis, I get an email asking how it went - of course, nothing this time. I still haven't even gotten a receipt. Won't be back. Avis Preferred or Preferred Plus?? Had an absolutely horrible experience with Avis Alaska. I had booked a minivan for my family on our trip to Denali. When we arrived at the airport, they didn't have a minivan and told me they weren't sure when they would have one. When I asked what they could do, they were less than helpful and suggested I ask the other rental car companies if they had a minivan, which they did not. We had specifically booked with Avis due to them having minivans. Ultimately, they found a small SUV for us that didn't have anywhere near enough cargo space for our family of 5. Having no other option, I took the SUV but I had to stack suitcases up beside my kids and they had to keep their hands on it for the entire time we're driving to ensure luggage didn't crash onto them. When I late raised complaints to both Avis corporate and to e local company, they took months to get back to me and thought the $200 discount was sufficient for our troubles. First this is NOT an Avis branch. They are an independent affiliate so if you are an Avis member none of that matters. They are Avis in name only. The folks at the counter were helpful though the guy was less than enthusiastic. I will give him the benefit of the doubt it was late in the day and maybe he had enough. He was efficient just not very personable. I get it but I had also been up and traveling for 16 hours and managed to attempt engagement. The car was clean though had some wear and minor scraps. I as always photographed it all and away I went. Good car no issues for the week. Turn in was not a problem. They don't have a traditional return area just find an empty Avis slot and park. Get your fuel, mileage, row and spot number. The woman at turn in was great very pleasant and friendly. Overall not bad but again as a Avis Member no benefit to using them. However, the front desk lady refused to provide free extra drivers. She kept asking for our work IDs but also said it won't change anything. I rented a car several weeks ago from AVIS and had a good experience despite some of the earlier comments by other customers. The whole rule about unpaved roads and voiding the warranty, I think that is crazy. I always pay for the cover the car coverage but then they wanted extra money for windshield coverage, cover this, cover that. I though cover the car would cover the car!? If you visit Alaska and do not encounter an unpaved road, you have probably not experienced Alaska. I rent cars regularly throughout the country and I can tell you this was my most expensive and stressful one. The car was clean but it did not have an entirely full tank when I picked it up although the paperwork said it did. I did not cause a stink about it. I will say that the location at the Fairbanks airport is the most convenient AVIS counter I have ever seen, right next to baggage claim! I had my keys in hand before my suitcase even popped out. I will admit that when I read the reviews that I was a bit cautious however I have been to Alaska before and totally understood their road restrictions -- insurance or not. It just amazes me how people from the lower 48 come and expect life to be the same. First, by the time you arrive - it is long trip - our took a total of 10 hours traveling time with actual flight 6.5 hours. People need to take things into consideration -- especially when you have a bunch of cranky and rude people. I have been to Alaska more times than I can count and was asked what I did not like and I told them tourist -- because they can be rude, expecting everything to be laid at their feet when they want it -- it does not happen that way every where - let's get real. We arrived exactly at 2 a.m. and I had scheduled to pick the car up in the morning however, I saw an agent there who just finished packing up her stuff and she stopped to help me. We got the vehicle early, I did not have to come back, even though I told I did not mind but no, she helped us, even showed us where the car was and had to help stop traffic so we could cross. I have never gotten such great service from any car rental. And yes....this is an affiliate but it clearly tells you on the site. I do not know the travel conditions when these people travelled that gave the reviews but I am inclined to believe they were not easy people to deal with. Do not rent from this Avis in Fairbanks, even if it's your last resort!!!! Run the other way, it's not worth it! If it's the only rental place with a car online, rent from the Uhaul or call the local car dealerships to see what they have available to rent! They almost completely ruined our trip to Alaska! Thousands upon thousands of dollars would have been flushed down the drain without a care in the world by any employee at Avis. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I was very nervous to rent a car with Avis. But because of the car rental shortage, I didn't have much choice. The experience turned out to be great! There was no line at the counter and it look less than 10 minutes to get everything set up. The walk to the car from the airport was less than 5 min. We turned in the car in Anchorage, which was also a breeze. No wait at all. We actually got there too early because of some horror stories I heard! We even got a refund for turning in the car early. Employees here are taught to waste time upselling to customers as much as they can- since it's Alaska they try to sell upgrades to 4 wheel drive, winter tires, insurance, etc etc. Took forever to get the car when I arrived, then when I was returning the car the old lady (Yvonne I believe) at the counter took ages upselling some other customer. I was next in line and waited over 20 minutes- after a while I asked if I could just leave the keys but she got really offended and started actually yelling at me in front of the entire line for coming to the airport too late. Actually I got to the airport early, if she wasn't busy trying to scam customers maybe I wouldn't be in a rush. Completely unprofessional behavior, will never rent from any Avis again after this incident. Rented a car from Avis for 6 passengers. One day we went out and loaded up for our day to discover the tire was completely flat. I called and they suggested I (a 56 year old female) change the tire and bring it back to the airport, 20 mins away, and exchange for a different vehicle. I said no, can you send someone out to exchange the vehicle. They said no they didn't have anyone to do that and I'd have to pay for the tire. Was given a car that had trash in it, and as I drove sounded like the valve train was lacking oil. Also, why are the cars there so high mileage? 45K seems a tad bit high in the rental game. I rent a car on 11/20-11/23, 2017, from Avis Alaska at Fairbanks airport. The total charge should be $189.36. Later I found I was charged additional $50.67. I contacted them and they told me this was because I added my girlfriend as an additional driver. However, 1. According to their rental policy(https://www.avis.com/en/customer-service/faqs/usa/reservations), the renter's spouse or life partner is exempt from additional driver fee. 2. I was not acknowledged there is additional charge and I've never signed agreement to authorize this charge. So I told them that we are eligible for the exemption and it is shitty to charge me without my acknowledgement and authorization. But they just refused to refund. Fortunately, I can dispute this charge to my credit card. But, this is not the end of story. A month later, on 12/26/2017, I received an Advisory Letter from Avis, Alaska, saying that there is damage sustained to the vehicle during my rental period and thus I was charged $213.52 for it. I'm really pissed off. I returned the car on 11:30AM, 11/23/2017, during their business hour. This is not an after hour return. Therefore, if there were any damage, the agent supposed to notify me at the time when I checked in the car. However, they didn't notify me until 12/26/2017. And the funny thing is in a letter from Vicky Saephan, a representative from Avis, Alaska, to response my request to dispute the charge for adding additional driver, it clearly says that I returned the vehicle on time and did not incur any additional charges. A reservation for a 4WD Suburban or something similar was made over 6 months ago. Upon our arrival at Avis in the airport, I was told that no 4WD or AWD vehicles were available, and that they had changed my reservation to a FWD van. No notice was provided regarding this change. It was very frustrating that no AWD or 4WD vehicles were available, especially in Alaska, but we could've gotten by with a FWD vehicle. However, to make matters worse, the Avis clerk was very rude and disrespectful. She does not belong in customer service. Instead of being helpful, she seemed annoyed and stated that they are out of 4WD vehicles and she's ready to go home. Me and a party of 12 had reserved 3 cars, 1 and half months prior of our renting, and confirmed the booking 2 days before the day of renting. We walked up to the counter and no cars were available. We tried to reason with the incompetent employee who claimed she had no cars for us. It seemed like it was her first day on the job, because 2 minutes later, magically, 2 more cars appeared and a 15 person bus. The bus barely had enough room for the 12 people and the entire front row was used for our 10 suitcases, as there was no room in the trunk for a backpack let along a suitcase. Half of our group was over the age of 50 and comfort was not existent in the 15 person bus. Do not rent here. Customer service is horrid. read more

Had a really bad experience in returning the car at Fairbanks airport. I was couple of hours late in returning the vehicle. But they charged me for a whole additional day. I was charged an additional amount of $244 for the extra day, for a full size sedan. I asked them if I could use the car for the next day since they are charging anyways for the additional day. But they told me, I cannot as this is already marked in the system. They could have easily charged a late fee or at-least allowed me to use the vehicle for the day I am paying for. Be careful renting a car from the Avis at the Fairbanks, Alaska airport. A woman named Von rented a car to me 3 days ago. I confirmed when I rented it to return it full making sure that I wasn't paying for fuel in advance. When I got to the car there was a quarter tank of gas missing. It's was 3 degrees outside so I opted not to go bag inside and mention it. I took picture of the mileage and the gas gauge in the parking lot prior to leaving the lot. When I dropped the car off, again to Von, I let her know that the car was missing a quarter tank of gas and she said it will say in her system if it was. So I asked does it stay that in your system? She finished the return paperwork and I asked her again if it said it was 3/4 full. She looked and said yes. I asked why she didn't tell me when I rented it. She said the person renting you the vehicle should have told you. I told her she rented me the vehicle. And she said she told me to return the car back with the same amount of gas in it. Which she did not. Then she said, "I don't know what you want me to do. Say thanks?!" A simple, "oh shoot, sorry about that" would have sufficed. So with that, Von who represents Avis gets no stars today. Made a reservation 45 days ahead, pre-paid minus additional insurance, budgeted for the extra as I called ahead and priced additional fees, I arrive at airport instead of 141.00 for three days (I had the printed receipt with the terms in detail) the ignorant c decided to charge me 147.00 per night, plus 29.99 per night for insurance. The issues were how dirty and stinky the car were and when we tried to contact customer service we either got transferred to another department or told we would get a call back that never happened. Months later, we got a notice of damages that they said we incurred. This was 18 months ago and it is still unresolved! No one calls me back. My insurance company paid half the claim and they still want more! Once they cc'd me on a letter that turned there were about 10 people with the same story. They would not work with me in any way to help finance the additional under age charge since I would be turning 25 the next day, which I was just annoyed that you won't help a customer out. Then when I went in to my rental I checked for any physical damages as they told me to and went on my way because I have a very busy short trip. It wasn't till later shortly leaving the airport I noticed I was almost out of gas. I filled the tank and went on my way. I don't know why anyone would give more than a 1-star review, other than those people that just lucked out or have low standards. Horrible company, but unfortunately I ended up here-as others did-because of rental car shortage. Avoid them at all cost. It's now Sep. 2021. Been dealing with them since April 2021 because of their fraudulent charge on my credit card. I was unable to return car due to major snow storm out of my control bringing over a foot of snow Easter weekend. Avis even said themselves they couldn't rent cars until they dug them. They weren't answering the phones and every time they did they excused themselves by saying they were "busy" digging out cars from the snow. Should not have been charged for late return due to major snow storm out of my control. The car was snowed in. The road wasn't even plowed for three days following the storm. There was no way to get the car back. I wonder who else out there was affected by this act of Mother Nature and Avis Alaska Fairbanks charging them for a late return. Such a headache dealing with them. My credit card company would not refund the charge because Avis doesn't have in their terms and conditions a statement about not holding customers accountable during inclement weather conditions out of their control. Avis didn't even acknowledge the snow storm as an issue when talking about my car return, but definitely used the weather as an excuse on their end. Poor customer service, poor management, horrible company. Not the least bit satisfied. Whew, exhausting to deal with. I got fraudulently charged and there is nothing I can do about it now other than file a complaint with FTC. If you have a flat tire, it may be better off fixing by yourself! Until proven otherwise, you are treated like the instigator of the damaged car(in this case, a flat tire) so you have to fill an incident report and facing a myriad of questions of why that happened as if it is your fault.
