This is the one rental car company that was highly recommended through locals (thank you, Reddit!). I initially tried booking through Alaska 4x4's direct website which showed no availability for the dates I was booking (note that I did try a few days before). I then proceed to book through Expedia with NextCar which turned out to be an affiliate of Alaska 4x4, so it all worked out in the end. As persons not accustomed to snow, I wanted to make sure we were renting a car that would be well-equipped for inclement weather and Alaska 4x4 checked all the boxes. So why Alaska 4x4? 1) It's a local business 2) All their cars are equipped with winter tires and AWD or 4WD. 3) Engine warmer plugs provided in case your engine dies in the cold weather 4) Reasonably priced. 5) Excellent and friendly customer service. They are located at the end of the airport baggage claim level. As soon as you go down the escalator, just go right and you will see it at the end. It's separate from all the other rental car companies which are all bunched together left near the baggage claim pick up. Customer service was friendly and helpful. They let us know ahead of time to be careful on the roads if we were planning on driving to Chena Hot Springs (we weren't), had restaurant recommendations, and picked up promptly when I called their customer service line. Pick up and return process was easy. Just make sure to refuel before returning. Would definitely recommend for your rental car needs, especially if you'll be dealing with snow and ice on the roads. read more

Was given a fairly new vehicle it was clean and as expected. The only thing I would change if I was an owner is to have the car brought around to the airport rental area even if they charged extra for this service. The car was parked at the end of the rental lot and covered in ice and snow. Then having to park it back in the same lot was a pain. read more

These guys deliver the experience I was promised. I was promptly picked up at the airport when I called upon arrival. The vehicle I rented was clean, had new tires, and just had an oil change. The contract was clear, I am not sure where these comments on surprise charges come from. I read the contract, and knew exactly what I was getting in to. I rented this vehicle to drive up the Dalton, so getting a reasonable CDW and a windshield waiver were a must for me. The rates were reasonable. The cleaning fee was super reasonable, much cheaper than a full detail in my area. I have already recommended these guys to a friend taking a similar trip, and would definitely use them again. read more

This is an outstanding group to work with! Getting off of the Alaska Railroad Winter Train in Fairbanks to a clean, well maintained, ready to go vehicle. (only company that does it) While everyone else scrambled for ubers, taxis and shuttle busses, we had a 4 x4 parked right across from the exit door. Easy to locate and get to. It was a god send! To those that are leaving bad reviews that has to do with the contract. It is a shame that you are hindering this company! The contract is clear. Grow up and keep you part of the contract! They do. When we had questions we received prompt service by email and by phone! We felt satisfied and signed the contract no problem. DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY to provide you a rental car that you reserved. Apparently, a reservation means nothing. We reserved an SUV months in advance for a once in a lifetime trip. We needed reliable and safe transportation to get around to the activities we planned. Two days before pick up they called to let us know that they changed the car we reserved: one agent told my husband they do not carry these cars any more, another one told me that because of a military training they gave all the big cars including ours to others- this should have been a red flag but we said OK to the change - not a big deal although we were nervous about driving a less ideal car in snow. Fast forward, hours before pick up, when we were boarding our plane to Alaska, they called and canceled on us. This time the story was the car they reserved for us was damaged. They neither offered any help, suggestion or proper apology. Because we trusted these guys and wasted all this time only to be canceled last minute without a car, there is no other vehicle available in the area. Now I am scrambling to salvage a vacation my kids looked forward to for months. It questionable how we will make it to our accommodations, let alone buy groceries and get to the activities we already paid for. Do yourself a favor and do not book with these people. I hope this review saves someone else's vacation. read more

The worst customer experience I ever had. Starting with not being able to find my car, they didn't even pick up the phone to help me. After calling for 15 mins, someone finally picked up the phone and told me to wait. Of course they disappeared and stopped responding to my phone calls and I had to take an Uber to my hotel. read more

The policy of this place is that they charge for the full reservation time. So if you reserve the vehicle for five days but find out you only needed it for one day or return it the same day you rented it you will be charged for the full five days. It is in their contract but it is bad business. They have not been in business for very long but at this rate they won't be in business very long. read more

Alaska 4x4 was an excellent choice for our recent trip to Fairbanks. We rented three vehicles and were treated with first class customer service. The weather was -23 degrees, the cars were ready and warmed up for us on time. When we returned the vehicles I apparently left my cell phone in one of the cars. The employee Ke-Ke called one of our family members right away. We were leaving the next morning on an early flight, so she agreed to come to work two hours early to meet me and deliver my phone. She even charged it so it wouldn't be dead in my travels. This was above and beyond! Her awesome sense of humor had us all rolling and we can't wait to come back to Fairbanks and visit. Making a reservation here, just means IF they have it available when you arrive, they will rent it to you. Read the last minute contract very carefully, but it won't help you. The federal department of the interior recommends two spare tires on the Dalton Highway. This place promised me that, but reneged at the last minute when it was weeks too late to use their competition, leaving me the choice of canceling the vacation of a lifetime and arguing about a refund past the deadline, or risking a dangerous drive without being properly equipped.
