We tend to rent a car (or several) each year during our annual trip to Boston. The location is very convenient. We find the desk staff to be friendly and helpful. BUT, the cars are not properly cleaned -- are dirty -- almost every time. This time, the car was dirty on both the outside and inside. The seats were stained (front driver seat and rear seat). And, when we got outside into daylight, we could see that the inside of the windshield had not been cleaned. The person at pickup (5th floor of the garage) told us that the car wash machine was not working. (Seems to be a frequent occurrence.) I suspect that the problem is that the cars are prepped inside of a parking garage and that there is simply not enough light to see what they are doing or to see the problems. (Or is it something else?) This kind of problem could be fixed -- better lighting and equipment. But, even after several years of commenting, nothing gets corrected. read more

A negative five stars would not be even close to rating how "criminal" this service was. I am an extremely loyal AVIS renter of more than 15 years and AVIS, make no mistake I am now moving to Hertz. I booked this reservation online for a 6:00 pm pick up. At no point was I informed the location closed at 6:00 pm. I was tied up in a meeting and gave a "courtesy" call at 5:55 to let them know I would be arriving at 6:30. The "clerk" arrogantly told me that they closed at 6:00. When I asked the options they told me if I was not there "prior" to 6:00 I can come at 7:00 am the next morning. I frantically searched the location and said I could be there in 5:00 minutes. The "clerk" told me that "if I promised to be there in 5 minutes" he would wait, however he then told me I had 3 minutes. I immediately dropped everything and ran outside to catch a cab... none were to be found. So, I took off running 1.1 miles through Boston. I got to the location at 6:08 and the doors were locked. They "knew" I was coming yet purposefully left. This was so unbelievably "criminal". 1. They accepted a reservation at 6:00 PM, yet they lock their doors at 6:00? Who arrives "prior" to your reservation? 2. I called before my reservation, so they knew I was coming. Yet, they could not wait 8 minutes knowing I was coming? This is so pathetic, the "clerk" needs to be fired. If this is not a corporate location, it needs to be shut down. This is by far the worst avis I have ever experienced. I am a loyal enterprise customer and after several bad experiences here the past couple of years, I decided to give it another try ONLY because enterprise was sold out. Everyone is extremely unhelpful and I despise this place. I will be writing a letter to senior management and hope to dear god this place gets a makeover in the event I have to go back to this crap hole again when my boys at enterprise are sold out. read more

I thought I had a great experience at this Avis, until I checked my credit card bill a couple of days later. I had returned the tank full, and have the receipt to prove it, however, they charged me a $13.99 refueling charge. When I called to inquire about it, the manager, Scott Santoro, was immediately hostile and raged at me on the phone. I was shocked at the level of unprofessionalism by this manager and filed a compaint with Avis. I will say, when I went in to pick up the car, it was super easy. Bad experience here. Yes, I knew upfront that their rates are MUCH higher than the rates at the airport location so I can deal with that (although they really are raping people with these insanely high rates). What I didn't expect is to have an Avis office in the city - in a tourist and business area - to not have an after hours drop box. My car was due before 5:00 on Sunday. I arrived shortly after 5:00 since I got stuck in traffic. The Avis garage attendant was there and told me to come back tomorrow. I asked if I could just give him my keys and paperwork and be done? I was told in a brusque manner (In pigeon English BTW) to come back the next morning and yes, I would still be billed for an additional day. Not a partial day but another ENTIRE day even if I brought the car back at 9:01 or even if I left it in the garage in the Avis holding area that night. TOTAL RIP OFF! The clerk was pleasant enough until I voiced some displeasure and then she ignored me and started talking to someone else. That is why you have worked that craptastic minimum wage job for so long. I urge all of you to use companies such as Budget or Dollar or Enterprise at the airport. They are MUCH cheaper and they actually have a wider selection of cars. I too wish zero stars was an option. Rude staff, "Rosanna" or something like that (7.59pm tues night) basically shut the door in my face and locked it because it was 8pm by her clock. I have now called customer service five times to try and arrange a new pickup and each time the line disconnects --the more likely (but unfortunate) scenario is that they are hanging up on me because there is "nothing they can do". Poor marks all around and this particular staff member at 100 clarendon was easily the most unpleasant part. read more

Totally great, professional service from John today. Gave me a great rate that was cheaper than any discount code I had. Car was nice. You cant turn in vehicles at this location after hours but turning in to Boston Logan was no additional charge. Made a day trip from the hotel in downtown to Foxborough convenient so that I didn't have to pay for parking for the evening. read more

Usually I go to Enterprise at Haymarket, but Avis had a much better price this time. Well, as I tried to exit the garage I found that the staff had neglected to include an exit ticket in my paperwork, so I had to back up and park again and go back to the office to collect a ticket. The staff were extremely rude and condescending about this ("NOW do you know what to do??"). On the second attempt I inserted the ticket and was charged $15.00 to exit the garage! Since backing up again was not an option due to traffic I kept the receipt, fully confident that I could be reimbursed for this false charge at drop-off. Wrong. Not only did they refuse to credit my account (It's not them that charged it, but the garage) but they told me I was 'dumb' to have paid the fee in the first place, 'coz that's not supposed to happen'. Duh. OK, not happy, but we take our lumps in life. However, 11 days later I get a mysterious $61.00 charge on my credit card, and when I call them to inquire it turns out to be a fuel charge which I had already paid in full when paid for my rental, and, oh yes, it's up to ME to fix this because despite the fact THEIR computers applied this bogus charge, apparently THEIR computers can't give the money back. Add to this the fact that the garage entrance is a massive clusterfuck on Friday evening at 5:00, with nobody responsible for managing the conflict between hordes of pedestrians versus drivers entering and exiting the garage, and my impression of this outfit is that they are a mess and kind of crooked. OK experience, the guys there were helpful and the cars were clean BUT when I returned one of the vehicles with a full tank of gas, I was still charged for fueling charges! I had the worst experience with Rosanny, absolutely rude, looks evil, not customer friendly, she seemed frustrated as if she hated her job and the customers, Went to thrifty at the airport and it was fantastic. read more

BEWARE! Wish I read the google reviews from Yu Lu before doing business with this Back Bay budget location. Please BEWARE and ask for a receipt if you do business at this location. I got charged an extra day of rental after spotting the $244.68 amount on the credit card bill two weeks later. This seems like a "convenient" hidden transaction and now made me wonder how many out there who did not check their credit card charges weeks afterward like I did. The main reason I chose Back Bay location was it's the closest to the subway station outside of the airport and close to my hotel. I've been a loyal Budget Fastbreak customer for about 15 years and I love the ease and speed of picking up and drop off at Budget. I never had any major problems with Budget until my last rental in Boston that made life very stressful especially after a long vacation trip. Made several phone calls and emails to Budget to correct the problem but I feel like this is a scam after finding and reading the google reviews. I prepaid a 7 day rental for mid August 2017, picking up at Logan Airport. First timer in Boston.I returned the rental on the 6th floor of Back Bay on the return date and time as agreed on the contract but did not receive a receipt. There was only one gentleman working and he was rather busy due to there was a line of returns, so he scanned my car, checked my odometer and said I am good to go. I didnt think much and gave him the car key and went down to the subway to catch the train back to my hotel. I had mostly good experience with Budget in the past so I didnt bother to ask for the receipt. Also I still have the email receipt for the prepaid amount and agreements. I called Budget to inquire the $244.68 amount on my CC and was told the charge is for a one day late return? Budget asked me to submit my plane tickets and or rental return receipt. I dont have the rental receipt and my last two days in Boston I used the subway because our hotel charges $40 per day to park and public transportation in Boston is much easier than driving (for this Texan). So in trying to prove my case to Budget, I submitted my credit card receipt showing I gassed up at Exxon before returning the rental. My cc transaction also showed I purchased 3 subway tickets at Back Bay subway station for me, my wife and son on the same date after returning the car. I also submitted the Budget toll receipt which showed 6 days of tolls lead up to the return date. There was NO tolls after the return date. I also submitted my hotel receipts of my last to days in Boston with zero parking incidental charges. Budget responded a few days later via email saying "..the plane tickets does not confirm I returned the car timely". They apologized for the inconvenient and case close. I was furious! And called back and Budget now escalated my case. Budget emailed back a few days later and appologized and offer a 50% refund to my CC. I got furious again and requested that they view the garage surveillance camera for that exact date and time slot. They will surely see us three driving up on the silver Toyota Prius with license place "XYZ". Still waiting... I hope others don't have to experience what we did. I believe the receipt was not given to me on purpose so that the extra "incidental" charges are hidden and creep up on the credit card where many consumers may miss this devious charge. Also I was told ( in Texas), the airport Budget locations are own by Budget. All the other smaller, city locations are privately own. The fact that I discovered the google review by "Yu Lu" who was over charged by two days, made me very suspicious of the Back Bay location. Beware! read more

To say "this is by far the worst rental experience I have ever had" is a vast understatement. Here is my nightmare experience. I rented a car for 2 days from this location, returned on time on Friday night, took the Backbay T home, and thought it's over. A month later, my credit card statement showed $420 for a 2-day rental. Reason? They said the car was not returned until the following Tues, thus 4 more days of charge. What?? Worse, according to their final receipt (which I never got a copy and only saw it after request), the total miles driven was 600 miles - something is definitely wrong here, I knew I only drove for 2 days for about $10 of gas and under 100 miles. I never understood what happened. I was sure that this was a honest mistake by a careless employee, and it could be resolved fast. I was wrong. I first disputed the excess charge through my credit card company, who found in my favor and credited me the $285 overcharge, because Budget never responded to the credit card company's inquiry. Instead, Budget went after me personally, insisting payment for the now discredited over-charge I did not incur. I disputed their charge by sending them a detailed letter according to their dispute resolution procedure, providing evidence such as: (1) I bought subway ticket on the day of original car return (Friday night, after return time), at the Backbay station where the rental agency is located (why would I do that if I still have their car??); (2) I filled in gas just before car return time (what a co-incidence); (3) I rented from Hertz the following Monday and Tuesday (because my own car was still being fixed and was not done until Wed.) (Do I need to simultaneously possess 2 rental cars?). I also asked Budget, do you have any evidence that the person who allegedly returned the car on Tuesday, after that extra 500 miles of driving, is me? I got no response whatsoever. What I got is another letter demanding payment, with no acknowledgment of what I sent in. Still attempting to resolve this through formal channels, I called the number on their letter asking to speak to the person signing the letter. All I got was a voice mail, and he never called me back or get back to me in any way. After a few attempts, I stopped calling. Next came the letter from a collection agency. I am not sure if all this is done with bad faith, but it sure seems like they want nothing other than a legal action. Frankly, the $285 over charge is no big deal for me. But I just cannot bring myself to the thought that such a big corporation can just mess thing up, then simply ignore all the procedures it set up itself to resolve dispute, and just try to bully a consumer into submission. I am an attorney myself, and I know my legal rights. If they can bully someone who honestly try to resolve the issue through formal channel they set up, I do not know how many times they have bullied other customers who possess less patience and legal knowledge. We will see how that plays out. I will keep posting here until this issue is resolved. Meanwhile, for those of you thinking about renting here, please beware that what happened to me could happen to you. Good luck. read more

I got the car and not a soul to guide me on the basic information ( like the fuel botton position, that in three people later at the gas station could not find), they gave me a different car without telling me because they had no economy available and I had to spend three time the gas that I was consuming ( at the desk some people found out that even with a reservation there was no car available). Finally the most unfriendly and unsupportive attendant at the desk. I am done with Avis lifelong. read more
