Gave me a car that--just hours after receiving it--was deemed unsafe and unable to be driven by New York State standards and inspections by 2 different mechanics. Both the mechanics and the tow Avis sent agreed that the car was in such bad shape it should have never been rented out to anyone without at least 2 full tire replacements and serious alignment work. After Avis corporate agreed and admitted that this happened, I called the Yorkville office to let them know what happened and they accused me of lying and then cursed me out before hanging up. Nice. Anyways, Enterprise gave me a nicer rental at half the price and Avis gave me a full refund so, you know, hope it was worth it! read more

The worst car rental experience possible, Josiah was rude and incapable. The website let me prepay for two cars the same day in my name but upon arriving I was informed I could only have one, and would need to contact customer service for a refund on the second. This was not a good way to start an extended family and business trip. After two hours with customer service I left and went to Hertz where I was treated kindly and with respect. In preparation for returning my one car to Avis I realized I had never been given a copy of the rental agreement. I tried to open one through the app and it would not work. Again in contact with customer service I was informed I would need to get it from Josiah at the location when I returned the car. But of course he was again rude and refused to give me a copy of the agreement. He seemed to exhibit discriminatory behavior as well as complete apathy for his customers. read more

This Avis location on 90th Street provides consistently great customer service. This past weekend was no exception. When I picked up the car on Saturday morning, the rep behind the counter was super friendly but professional and efficient. Then last night when I was returning the car, I accidentally left my wallet inside and the guy who was processing the return saw it and gave it to me. Super honest and professional staff! Just had a horrible experience, attempting to pick up a car that was already paid for. July 21st 10:30pm at the Upper East Side location. When we tried to scan and pay for our rental it would not go through. We tried my card, my girlfriends card, it was clear that the machine was having a problem running cards. The employee refused to work with us to except payment, perhaps refreshing the machine or taking an alternative payment. When I asked if there was a manager she said there was none and then walked off. Worst experience with a car rental ever. I will coming in tomorrow to complain to a manager in person. read more

We paid to reserve a car for 24 hours (12pm-12pm). When my husband got there at 3pm to pick up the car they got extremely angry and told him he should have called if he was going to be late because they almost gave our car away. First, we paid for 24 hours so why do you care if I'm 3 hours late or 10 hours late. You're still getting paid. Secondly, don't be rude. Customer service is probably the one thing that's keeping you open in Manhattan where there are car rentals every couple of blocks. They also charged us three times- get your act together. This was our first and last time going to this place. Definitely will be telling friends to not go to this place and save themselves some time as well. read more

I would agree with majority of the negative reviews for this location. Rented a car for 9 days, I checked the outside, it was fine. The inside had vomit in the back that was not cleaned up. Only noticed it after we had taken off. Called them 2 times asking to speak with manager, someone said they would call back. No call back. Had to chase a third time, the brilliant manager thought I was making it up, I even sent him pics as proof. Yep, people would just call multiple times making up stories of vomit in the car to scam you, sounds logical enough to me. Then he tried to tell me it was cleaning product and not vomit. I think I can smell the difference between mr.clean or other cleaning products and vomit. I asked for some money back, the location manager told me he would get back to me in few days, never did. I've taken up the case with their head office, to be determined what they'll do. The VP at head office said they would do a thorough review and compensate me, but the branch folks are completely useless. Would certainly not recommend using this location unless absolutely necessary due to location proximity. You'll get something that moves with four wheels, don't expect anything else. read more

I urge anybody reading this to not consider AVIS rental for their car needs specially in NYC. They charge insane amount of per hour money if you are delayed by certain time. They seem to not understand NYC traffic. The return policy and rules are absurd. Traffic and last-minute delays are not taken into account (especially in a city like NYC). I agree with all the Google and Yelp reviews about this. We were quite stressed about the huge fee we will be charged even if we were delayed by 15 mins. This made our return journey not pleasant at all. Also, who charges 9 dollars a gallon for gas? I am personally very disappointed by the company. The employees who were at the counter were great and also were on the same page about this weird rule. read more

1) I rented what was supposed to be a compact car and got a full size sedan- not good considering I was going to Newport RI and not only is parking hard there but the streets in the old part of town are very narrow. In addition I am a small person and don't like driving a full size car. 2) When I came back to return it to the same location a week later the attendant waved me on indicating I couldn't return it there. There was a sign saying the new location was at 240 E 92nd. I drove there and the garage refused to accept the car saying Avis hadn't moved in yet so I drove back to 90th Street. This time the attendant wasn't at the entrance to wave me on so I drove in. Again he told me I couldn't return the car there but by then I was furious and not in the mood to take anymore c--p from him. I told him I was taking a time-stamped picture of the car in that location and now it was their problem. They finally agreed to let me return it there but there was a problem with the computer and between the 2 people at the desk it took them a half hour to complete the paperwork. Completely unacceptable service. It'll be a cold day in hell before I rent another car from Avis. I suggest you try another rental car company too. read more

Horrible customer service. Reserved car, showed up. No cars. Not too much more to say then that. We made a reservation a week ahead of time, we showed up on time and there were no cars. They put us on a list and said "We will have 8 cars in 45 minutes". 45 mintues later: "They might be here in an hour". In total we waited an hour and thirty minutes before we got a car. We missed a wedding ceremoney because of the messup. They could have been MUCH more friendly - it was just a bad scenario. I'm going to stick with Hertz. read more

Avoid this place, even if you have to pay more elsewhere. I prepaid to reserve a car from 10am to 10pm. Having read poor reviews about this place being difficult to work with, I called - twice - the morning of to ensure they would have a car when I arrived. The staff was rude and dismissive. And of course, there was no car when I arrived. I was put in a line with 8 people ahead of me, some of whom had their reservations cancelled without their acknowledgement. Avis processed full payment for the car, though they didn't actually provide the service I paid for (12 hours of a car) I'm not a lawyer, but is that fraud? Excellent service makes this location a standout in the area. Really quick to get you out the door, and convenient to the FDR. Bonus: I forgot my sunglasses, and an employee ran back and got them for me, even though the office had technically closed for the night. As others have mentioned, they had only SUVs available when I got there. I know most people view this as an upgrade, but it's annoying if you just don't want to drive (and park, and fill up) a giant car. read more

This location is literally close enough for me to lean out the window and hit with a tennis ball. That doesn't change the fact it took almost 45 minutes after our reservation began for them to hand us the keys to the vehicle. On the plus side, the location is convenient to our place, as noted, and it's clean. And they provided us with a car that was clean, filled up and perfect for our needs. And they credited us with a portion of the rental fee to offset the lengthy wait, which is a smart and respectful move on their part. We'll be back here again -- and we're hoping for a better experience. Optimism is half the battle ;-) read more

I created a Yelp account specifically to share my recent experience with them. We recently rented a car for 4th of July weekend through this Avis. I am a repeat customer and I have had nothing but decent experiences with them in the past. When I went to pick up my reserved car I realized it was too small for all of our stuff so I even upgraded to an SUV. About half-way into our drive I brushed off what I thought was dust on the headrest of the passenger seat where I was sitting and immediately realized they were miniscule glass shards. How did I know this? A piece got stuck in my finger. The little shards I realized were also now in my 6mo old baby's hair who was in her car seat behind me. We pulled over to brush them out and change her in the back seat and when I laid her down I noticed what I thought was gravel stuck to her thigh. When I picked it up I realized it was a piece of glass. I proceeded to find more chunks of glass that fell out of the cracks of the seats. When I called Avis I very calmly explained the situation and they suggested I send an email and pictures to them. I sent that email and didn't get a confirmation nor a response. I had to call THEM again to follow up 72 hours later. In the meantime, when my husband dropped the car off and showed the agents the glass, her response was "What's THAT? That's glass? WE don't want that." Nice. No apology, no concern and NO CALL BACK after I left two messages for their manager who was out of town. I followed up again on my initial email and finally got an answer back after 3 DAYS. They gave me a $100 CREDIT for glass in my finger, on my baby and in the vehicle in general. I don't know if I can post pictures here but I will certainly try. Needless to say they get 1-star for their poor customer service. read more

Well they had a car short notice at least. On the other hand they royally screwed us out of some big bucks. No discussion about insurance--they just added it. We said we didn't need a full size car, so for some reason they upgraded us to a mini SUV for the same price as a fullsize. They didn't explain that we had EZ passes or how they worked, so we unnecessarily paid at a tollbooth and got stuck at another one. Charged us for gas, despite us filling it up on the way back. Be very careful in dealing with Avis. They will prey on even the smallest mistake. I returned a car with the gas tank 5/8 full. The fuel service charge was $78.43 PLUS a sales tax of 19.875% I bought some small items on display on the counter for $20 and again they lop on the sales tax of 19.875%. I have no idea how they can charge this high a sales tax. read more

The worst service I've ever experienced. I had prepaid for a car and when I got here they had NOTHING available. I was an hour late but it was prepaid. They told me that they didn't know when they'd get a a car next and told me "it was MY fault" for renting a car on father's day weekend. It complete and utter shock at such horrific level of customer service. I had to wait three and a half hours for another car that was a lower grade that I had paid with no refund for the difference or any apology for the mishandling. Expect the minimum. Rented a car for a trip and made a reservation here. The checkout process was fine. They brought my car around and it was dripping wet and they said they just washed it. When I asked if they needed time to finish, they said no, it was ready. That's not a wash, that's hosing it off. Everywhere else I've ever rented a car from gives you clean and polished car, vacuumed and ready to go. They weren't busy either, just how they do things. I pick up and drop off cars so frequently at Avis on 420 E 90 St, that I have gotten to know a lot of the regular staff there. They are always very friendly and helpful when they see me and sometimes have my car ready when I get there. Last week, I left a accidentally left a bag in a car at drop off, and when I called the counter the next day (not the 800 number!), they had found the bag and were holding it in the manager's office. I rent cars so infrequently but when I do I go to this Avis on East 90 st. I have always had a good experience but this time was exceptional. The woman at the front desk, her name is Shamise is a great first impression for Avis! She was so personable yet very professional. I rented a subcompact but was upgraded to an SUV with the ok of her manager Ray Lombardi. A small car was all I could afford but really needed the SUV for what I needed to do. Ray saying yes to the SUV was the best news. It was a beautiful color blue and brand new- what a pleasure to drive. I recommend this Avis location highly! read more

This Avis is my go-to for rental cars. Knock on wood, I have never had a problem or slow service when I come here and I have used this Avis 7 or 8 times. Once I called them when I was running late and they were so nice and didn't penalize me for not being there on time. Sometimes I book through Priceline to get a cheaper deal but if I book far enough in advance, sometimes the price is actually better through the Avis website. A+ read more

I have rented here many times as it's very convenient. The majority of the times I have rented, my car is never ready (preferred) and I wait 20 minutes or longer. Most of the agents are pleasant with one exception. Her name is Donna. She can be very rude and condescending to customers. I simply made a comment regarding the "preferred" service at this location. I mentioned that if they don't take the service serious then don't offer it. She got all bent out of shape and threatened to cancel my reservation. She kept saying I was rude to her. I wasn't. I also overheard her talking to a customer on the phone saying..." You're an adult. Act like one". This really is no way to act towards customers. On a recent rental, I fueled up the car just before returning it. They charged me $15.99 for "re-fuel" charge. They did correct it after wasting another 15 minutes of my time. This place tried to rip me off. I had a reservation for a week rental and showed up one hour early to pick up the car (11am for a noon reservation). The attendant said that I would be charged for an "extra hour" because I was early. When she gave me the rental agreement to sign, it was about $200 more than I was expecting. I asked her how much they were charging for the extra hour because it was not clear on the receipt. She said $180. In other words, they were charging a full extra day for picking up an hour early. And they were not giving me an extra day on the rental. When I protested, she changed it so that my rental was 11am to 11am (instead of noon to noon). Second thing is that they had WATER in the windshield washer tank instead of washer fluid. We had the car in the middle of winter with temperatures in the 20s and teens. When we tried to use the windshield washer on the highway the water FROZE ON CONTACT and created thick of frost on the windshield so we could not see the road. We had to put on our hazard lights and pull onto the shoulder until the defogger melted the frost. These idiots trying to save a few dollars on windshield fluid almost got us killed. read more

If Yelp allows zero star, I will definitely go with that. The staff are extremely slow pulling out cars. If you don't pay attention when you pick up the car, they will give you a car with a half tank fuel and you have to return the car with a full tank. Sneaky! HORRIBLE!! Would never return. Initially I called and needed to cancel. Several hours later I visited the location in hopes of renting a car immediately. The representative proceeded to assist me while stating that the "system is slow" they processed my credit card 3 TIMES and stated it was declined when I clearly had enough funds. The first time the representative stated I need to call my credit card company. After calling them she states that they aren't helping me, and instructed me to hang up and call back requesting to speak to a Supervisor. As a former employee of a banking institution I know that you can push a charge through! After almost 2 hours her Supervisor who KNEW we were having issues with the card eventually gave her the permission to override the error message. Please keep in mind two White men who may have been returned customers were able to get in and Out in relatively no time. read more

I've rented twice from here and always had a good experience. Got an upgrade both times so that makes up for a lot of my review. Although, the second time I rented economy or compact or something like that, and the guy asked me if I wanted to upgrade to an SUV for just $XX extra (I don't remember offer, maybe 10-20 bucks/day?) At any rate, I declined and said I didn't want an SUV. Then when he was done with paperwork etc, he gave me the keys and said he upgraded me anyway. When I went into the garage to get my car, they only had SUVs available. So he had no choice but to give me an SUV and just tried to milk some money out of me for it. read more

Rented a car to go to the beach and returned it with some sand (not excessive). I alerted them of the sand and someone went to take a look. The operations guy came back and said it was excessive and would need to be sent out for detailing to remove the sand! When I asked how much it would be, they said, "Between $250 - $300 depending on the work and you'll get a bill in 3 - 4 weeks." Seriously???!!!! I asked if I could take the car to remove the sand via my home vacuum cleaner and they said no since I returned it. Since the car could not be rented in its current condition, I asked if I could return with a hand vacuum to clean it and they agreed. When I returned, a new attendant started his shift and asked why I was there. He confirmed with the manager that I was back to clean the car and walked over to the car. I told him about the sand and how Avis was going to charge me up to $300 to clean it. He looked inside and said, "For that little sand???" in disbelief. I spent the next 10 minutes vacuuming the sand from the trunk, seats, foot areas in the back and front and asked the same operations guy to inspect it. After 15 seconds, he gave me the thumbs-up and I went inside to inform the manager. The manager came back out to confirm with the operations guy that it was clean and it was confirmed again. I think the manager was shocked that 10 minutes with a hand vacuum would save me up to $300 in "detailing for excessive sand removal". I honestly felt they assumed I would simply suck-it-up-and-pay and how the joke was on me. I get it how the car should be in a similar condition from the time I pick it up but I thought they would, at the very least, vacuum the inside, wash the outside, and wipe it down before renting it out again. In reality, they expect to rent it out, as is, upon the car's return to the next customer. As highlighted with Peter C., be very careful when dealing with Avis and they will take advantage of you any way they can. read more
