I picked up the vehicle on August 15, 2025 around 10:15pm from Aguadilla airport and it had several cockroaches. I was not able to return the car for new one at the time since it was so late in the night. This is so shocking since Avis is such a reputable company. This is unacceptable! I had to spray the car with roach spray every day. After I sprayed it the first day, a roach crawled up my leg while I was driving almost causing me to have an accident. This will make it difficult for me to recommend this company to anyone. Very disappointed! read more

Vehicle cleanliness and hygienic standard promised by agency was not delivered. Cockroach infestation in SUV car rental. Employee stated this is a known issue of being on a tropical island. Does not excuse them of addressing the problem before it reaches the customers. Including their site states they inspect all vehicles, a false statement for this location. Aside from the cockroaches, the car was visibly not cleaned/sanitized, same issue for 2nd vehicle that used for exchange. Dispute case was denied and no reasonable resolution was met or negotiated. Awful! Got a crappy jeep (6 days for $700 (estimated)) - rain leaked inside and the entire car broke down after 4 days. I paid $400 for towing the car to AVIS, and then got charged $780 for the rental. No apology, no offer to even reduce the towing, charges, anything... - NOTHING. Avis car rental has been a nightmare. We rented a car on July 8 2024 in San Juan PR International Airport. The white Honda Accord that was given to us had major issues to start. It was roughed up on the exterior. My husband documented all of the dents and scratches during the inspection. The very next day (July 9th), we were driving out of our parking spot at the hotel and the bumper fell off. I mean completely fell off without reason. When we got out of the car to get a closer look at the bumper, there was clear tape on two ends that had broken, and glue residue on the left interior side. My husband then drove an hour back to the airport to return the car for a different one. When Avis employees were assessing the bumper, they asked my husband for his copy of the inspection paper that was completed on July 8th. The lady then proceeded to take his copy of the inspection and walked away. She then came back asking my husband for his copy of the inspection AGAIN! He then told her I gave it to you. She responded with "no you did not." At this point, we were beyond furious. One of the employees said the bumper was indeed loose and it wasn't our fault. They removed the car from service. We decided to take pictures of their notes because they weren't being truthful. We did not trust that they wouldn't pin this issue on us. They gave us that Honda knowing it was faulty, while putting my infant daughter's life at risk. If we were traveling at a high rate of speed, we would have gotten into a terrible car accident. When I called customer service on July 9, 2024, they explained that they would be covering gas, tolls, and three out of the six day rental. Fast forward to July 17, 2024, after reviewing our charges they indeed charged us for all six days AND an additional $80 for gas. My husband had filled up the gas tank in the new rental the day we returned the car on July 13, 2024. We kept the gas receipt and recorded a video of the interior and exterior of the car, which showed it had gas! This has been the worst experience I have ever had with a car rental company. I don't understand why Avis is trying to scam their customers and pocket extra money while putting people's lives at risk. Horrible customer Service at this location. Lady at the front desk was so rude. Good luck trying to call them on the telephone for any reason. Car I rented had sand inside everywhere . They don't inspect the cars you do it yourself so make sure you document all the scratches and dents. Take lots of pictures so you don't get blamed. I asked about paying for the tolls and was told it's included in the rental . I just read somewhere they I should be expecting a separate bill so we'll see. I don't know what happened, but this Avis is trash. Went there and was immediately met with glares by the woman working the front desk. Off to a good start. Then upon being asked about fees and parking, she was just clearly not trying to help us. We asked where we could park the car overnight/when we're done with it and she told us we couldn't park it there. So we asked if she had any recommendations after that and we once again received a curt no. Upon asking if there was anything we could possibly do to help the issue, she made if very clear that she was just plainly not willing to help. Please do not go to this Avis. Don't do it to yourself. And it seems like other reviewers agree with me. So this was my experience with Avis: I will NEVER rent a car from Avis again! On my trip to Puerto Rico, we wound up with a flat tire. What happened? I called the NONEXISTENT phone number for roadside assistance! I had to have my friends take me around that day. Each time, and I did so several times! I calledonly to be transferred to the NONEXISTENT number. For $430.00 for a Nissan Sentra, your company can certainly do better than that! This review is about the Ashford Avenue location, which works together with the Convention Center location. I have gone there before because it's very close, and staff have locked up early because they have better things to do. This time they gave me a car with trash all over, including dirty wipes and sand, and which was covered in bird poop. I had no time and had to go, but there was no apology or anything. And the women inspected the vehicle enough to note all the scratches (it was covered in scratches). I have rented from Avis around the world, and this is hands-down the worst location. read more

Very unprofessional, I made a Reservation over for a trip to Puerto Rico over a month before hand , called the day before my trip to make sure everything was fine , was told my reservation was in the system and everything was set for pick up the next day. The next morning while im Getting on the airplane at 7:30 am I get a call from them saying they had no more cars there was nothing they could do. Thieves!!! Got charged for 4 days when only used 2. I ordered a small sized vehicle and got a medium size because they ran out, got charged for medium too. And apparently driving the car for a total of about half a tank is 620 miles to them. Used Visa for the cards own Insurance but still got charged for their (AVIS) insurance. Please, don't rent from these horrible company, NEVER AGAIN!! $39 a day for 2 days does NOT = $255.01 even after all the taxes and fees. read more

By the way, why is Linda R. allowed to rate her own business?! We always have had great experiences with Avis, so we chose to take a taxi to this location rather than use the Hertz within walking distance of our hotel. Unfortunately the experience was not at all in line with all of our previous Avis experiences. The van we'd reserved wasn't ready when we arrived, so they offered us an SUV instead. We said that we don't mind the SUV but were concerned about the lower gas mileage, and asked if there was a small discount on the rental they could offer us to make up the difference. Linda acted like we'd just threatened to steal the car (stopped what she was doing, lowered her glasses and glared over them at us for a full 30 seconds) and was very clear that there would be no such discount. We said, OK, no problem, and proceeded with the paperwork. When the guy (husband I presume?) walked in a few minutes later, she said in a 'can you believe these people' sort of way, "They want a discount for not having the van...". He was quite upset by this and after hearing our suggestion, finally said, "OK, They want the van, I'll get them the van!" and stormed out. We were fairly uncomfortable at this point, but having already made the taxi ride, tried to smooth things over with and move forward with the paperwork with Linda. Afterward we waited for ~15 minutes outside with no explanation from either from them regarding what was going on with our rental. Then the angry man came flying into the garage in the van, screeching to a halt just short of my older parents. We all 6 tried to make small talk and calm things down as we did the walk-around, but it was obvious he was furious. We suspected there would be some "revenge" later on, so we treated the car with great care: we went back to a gas station to add a couple more liters of gas even after filling up at the end of the day just to make sure there wouldn't be any question there, shook out the floor mats, and took photos of the whole car inside and out as evidence against any claims that would be made. Sure enough, the following week we saw a $42 extra charge on the credit card from Avis. We called the location to ask about the charge, and they told us to call back the next day when "the lady that does the billing" would be in. The next day, she wouldn't pull up the record herself, and instead told us to use the rental agreement number to check the receipt online. Turns out it was a gas charge. So again we call back to dispute that, and the guy only had angry things to say. A call to Avis customer service finally got us a refund, but not without wasting our time on four phone calls and a real run-around from this location. Avis is still our favorite, but we now advise friends going to San Juan to steer clear of this particular Avis. read more

Read this before renting from this location! My wife booked a car online for pickup at this location and a drop off at the airport. The total cost listed on the screen was around $50. Imagine our surprise when we were to be charged another $50 for a "drop off at a different location." Why didn't that charge show up when we were booking the car?! The manager tried to hide behind some "additional fees may be charged" language, but if I doubled my fees at my point of sale, I'd be run out of business! I rented a car from San Juan Puerto Rico. The car they gave me had an expired registration. I got stopped by a police office I received 1,000 worth of tickets. I tried calling customer service they never answered the phone I was a nervous wreck my daughter was crying because the office told me he would have to leave us walking. It was a horrible experience and I don't recommend Avis. I never received an apology and even calling corporate all I was told is send the tickets not once did I hear I am sorry for the inconvenience. read more

Lady at the front desk was professional when picking up car, BUT, when returning the car I go into the office (same lady was there from when I picked up), she asked me to fill out the mileage and fuel tank info on the contract sheet I had. I asked her 'isn't that your job?' She says 'no, every customer has to fill out that information when returning cars here'. Ridiculous! Come on Avis, just get your employees to do this for customers. It was my first time using the Avis preferred membership. I reserved the car for 5:00 PM. I checked in with the representative at 4:46 PM, and he said the car was not ready yet but was recently dropped off and was in the process of inspection and cleaning so the wait would not be long. At this time, while checking in, my husband and I told the rep that we had a gift certificate that we wanted to apply for partial payment, and showed him the printed certificate. He responded that we should present that upon return of the vehicle and it would be applied then. OK, great. Then we waited, and waited, and asked for an ETA a couple of times. We drove out of Avis with the car between 5:25 and 5:30 PM. I didn't think Avis Preferred meant I would wait that long to start my honeymoon. Also, no mention whatsoever of additional fees to use the e-toll pass. We asked the rep about how to pay tolls, he said all cars were equipped with the e-toll pass, and that was it. Five days later we went to return the car, as scheduled. When we present the gift certificate, the rep there (a different gentleman) said it had to be applied BEFORE pickup. Well, that's contradicting. He tried to help, we were there for some time while he tried to apply it in the system somehow, but at the end he was unable to do so. We called Avis customer support right after to see if they could assist with this Avis gift certificate in order to apply it for partial payment. After explaining everything, including the conflicting information provided by the location representatives, he said he would try to escalate the issue. I waited on hold for over 10 min until he came back and apologized for the wait, but said no supervisors were available at the moment, and that he was escalating and I should expect a call within the next 48 hours. 72 hours later, I called again, since I had not been called. I waited on hold a long time again, finally a supervisor said they couldn't do anything, it had to be dealt with AMEX since they were the originator of the gift certificate, and that it they were to 'accept' it, it would just be Avis taking that loss because AMEX would not pay them. Word of caution...if you rent from these people, specifically from the Munoz Marin airport location, be advised that in addition to your rental, you will be charged a daily convenience fee of $3.95 per day for the use of the toll reader, including days on which the e-Toll is not used. So, if you plan to stay there for at least four days, expect to pay almost $20.00 (as they add tax) plus whatever tolls you've gone through on the island. This is separate from your ordinary vehicle rental. The reason I'm upset is because at the airport the rep we dealt with, Carmelo, denied any charge, when we asked him if there was any additional charge for the use of the toll reader. He responded that it was already included in our rental and that we would only be responsible to pay whatever tolls we used. For less than a week, we were charged an additional $23 for the use of toll reader and tolls we hardly came across. Better off with Charlie Rent A Car....they're reliable, reputable...and above all...honest! read more

Why in God's name does the Avis San Juan Airport site take reservations and then not have the vehicle when you arrive. We had reserved a minivan for March 13th for a midnight arrival at the airport. After getting off the plane and collecting our luggage we proceeded to the Avis desk only to find a long line. After over 2 hours of waiting in line after midnight, we were "greeted" by John Alonzo who didn't even apologize for the wait. We then found out why every customer was taking so long...they had no vehicles for many of the people in line and were trying to give them vehicles that weren't "quite ready" that they would switch the next day. The same was true for our minivan. Our family of 6 was left sitting on the floor of the rental car place waiting for Mr. Alonzo to return with an old Ford Expedition that they would trade with us the following day. We waited for his return but after a long time we finally gave up. Even if he had returned with a vehicle, this would have disrupted our vacation day. This resulted in us wasting even more hours of our time and ruining our first vacation day in San Juan because we had no sleep by the time we found alternate transportation and got to our hotel. This situation was deplorable and totally unacceptable. Something must be done. Hopefully more of the angry throng of customers that night have posted reviews with their complaints. Mr. Alonzo should have been directing customers to other rental companies that actually had vehicles to rent. read more
