We rented a 15 passenger van and the passenger sliding door didn't fully close. The cleaner guy pushed on the back and said it was fine, then to demonstrate he pulled on the back and it popped back open. He then tried to say he hadn't fully closed it. There was a car seat still hooked in and what looked like scrambled eggs on the floor. They said it was the only one but magically found more when we said it wasn't safe for the two year old and two 1 year olds to ride in a car that has a door that doesn't reliably shut. read more

Unfortunately have to agree with the reviews- we spent 55 minutes in line because they only had one person taking customers and 2 others behind the desk. I had a 1 year old who was screaming by the end. We pre checked in and ordered the car so I thought it would be quick. Once it was our turn they shut the 2nd lane down, and we had to continue to wait longer while the one worker (while two others stood there) proceeded to leave the desk. My flight wasn't full and the airport was not busy. This should not have taken so long. Then they wanted to upgrade me "for my wait" but made me pay for the upgrade. Rented a car for a week and it has roaches. I called back and the lady hung up on me and said that they may not have cars when I wanna exchange it. I repeat the car that they gave me had roaches. AVIS IS A SCAM. It is absolutely unacceptable to return the keys on time and be told "you'll get a receipt as soon as I check in the car." and then find out they didn't check the car in until the next day. This caused them to doubled my charges. I've been fighting this through multiple places over the last month, and they continue to lie and keep my money despite having photo evidence of when I returned the car. Turned down additional insurance, got home and still charged $350 for it. Refueled one mile from the airport cost $55 to fill up. They charged us $158 to refuel .... We sent proof of gas and they are still saying we have to be charged apparently over 3 times what it cost to refuel even though we returned it filled to the top.... I specifically requested a Toyota Prius Hybrid. Not only was I was switched, to an all electric Mustang. But I was charged a higher price than my original hybrid I contracted for. I explained my concerns and told them I was traveling to Orlando for a pediatric conference and was staying on Disney grounds. Disney does not have chargers at their resorts. Only a small number at some parks. I did not have time to go to a gas station or super charger and wait. I also explained I've never driven an all electric vehicle before. Their response was the only other vehicle they had was a pickup and it would cost more. When I went to the vehicle nobody demonstrated anything on the vehicle nor did they check it out. It smelled of cigarette smoke. They explained that we were responsible for returning the car with a 50% charge remaining on the vehicle. When we arrived in Orlando at the Port Orleans Riverside Resort, the car had used 21%. The temperature being 94 degrees outside for the next two days we decided we couldn't use the car to travel because we would have to find a place to charge it and wait while it charged. This would have impacted our plans, so we had to Uber the rest of the time. Good thing since we only had 57% charge when we returned it. Shame on you for your intentional bate and switch tactics. The only value I received from this encounter with Avis, was to learn how little you value your customers. At least there are plenty of alternatives. read more

If I could put zero stars, I most certainly would...My mother and I decided last minute to rent a vehicle with Avis. We usually use Enterprise (and have only rented from them) but they didn't have anything smaller than a midsize SUV. So since Avis had my favorite car, a dodge challenger available, we decided to stick with them. We called the airport to book the reservation but we picked up at the Sanford location on 17-92. The lady on the phone told us the price and gave us a "discount" for being AAA members, which in the end didn't matter. Anyway, the service we got at that location was so bad! The guy kind of brushed us off like "here are the keys" and pointed out the door. Like ok? Did not do an initial walkthrough or around the car. The car was so dirty inside and out. Dirt on the floors , splash marks on the bottom outside, and literally residual "grease" or oils from someone's skin or body products on the handles and arm rests. I heard they charge cleaning fees but I will fight tooth and nail if they try me with that. Because we got it FILTHY. Horrible experience and will never and I mean never again. If you track any beach sand residue into your rental car, be prepared to discover a hefty "cleaning fee" of almost $300 added to your credit card. You had better bring extra (clean) shoes for everyone to change into every time the car is used or risk getting hit with this. If I could give them less than one star I would. Stay away from this rental company. Of course I fell for the oldest trick in the book when they ask if you want to prepay for the gasoline use. Remember that's for the entire tank not just the 3 gallons I used. When I caught this mistake the person behind the counter said it was too late to change it that if I fill up the tank before I get back they will note that no gasoline was requiredand I would not get charged the $32 to fill up the tank. Well when I got my receipt they did Charge me for a full tank of gas when i did fill up the tank with 3 gallons I used. When I got in touch with customer service they indicated to me that I need to send them a copy of the receipt for the gasoline I added. I filled up in a gas station that didn't give me a receipt and I added a whole 3 gallons.So now I have to jump through the hoops to prove that I filled up the tank when I know that they note the tank is full when you return it also they can determine the amount of mileage are used was minimal. I giant waste of my time. I wonder if this Is a normal procedure to trick people into spending more money because it's a big waste of time to try to correct it? They will keep stuff you forget in the car and blow you off for over 24 hours while you're trying to get your items returned. We left an item in the center console of our rental car. Called them 6 hours later when we realized it. We were told to call back the next morning because the service department was gone for the evening. Called back the next morning and we were told we actually needed to check their lost and found website. We went to the website and found out that Sanford Avis doesn't even participate in the lost and found website. Called back for a third time and someone finally was willing to check with service to look in the car. Service said there was nothing in the car. We were told they would check with the manager who came in at 3:00ET to see if someone had turned it in and would call us back. In the meantime, I emailed customer service to see if they might be able to help us quicker and received an automated email. We finally called them back at 7:30ET when we still hadn't heard from the manager. This person was very helpful and said she would check with the cleaning crew and call back. At 8:30CT, I finally received an email back telling me to call the Sanford location or check the lost and found website, followed by a copy of the contract that says they aren't responsible for items left behind. It was obvious the customer service rep hadn't actually read the email I sent. At this time, we called back to Sanford Avis (9:30ET) because we still hadn't heard back about the cleaners and were then told that the cleaners didn't find anything. I am aware that it was my fault that I forgot something in the car, however it was made clear to us that very few people in this company actually care about helping and providing any form of customer service. read more

On March 9, our flight from Bangor IA was due to arrive at Sanford Airport at 10:45 pm, just before closing time for the Avis office at 11:00 pm where we were to pick up our rental. We were delayed twice and arrived at 1:45pm, with no hope that Avis would still be open, or that we could find an Uber or Lyft to the hotel we had to book at the last minute, 10 miles away. As I was standing in the airport at baggage claim, my poor husband was running around outside trying to find us transportation for a reasonable price (haha) when his cell phone rang. Service was slightly slow, but very friendly. He asked if we wanted to upgrade from our compact car to an SUV for $5 per day. We declined, but got the SUV anyway. (We've had this happen with other car rentals over the years. Unfortunately, I actually prefer a compact car, but whatever.) I rented a minivan for 2 days-drove a total of 40 miles-airport to the hotel and back. Was charged $1300. When I called to find out what the heck was going on I was told that Avis made an error, but it would take up to 5 business days to fix. Still waiting for the issue to be resolved. There is still no explanation as to what caused the error, what the error was, or why avis is authorized to randomly withdraw funds that were not outlined in the service agreement. read more

I rented a car for one week so I could help my elderly mother in a neighboring city. I don't usually use Avis because Alamo's rates have always been better and I haven't had any problem with them in the past. I got a deal through Costco Travel which gave me a better rate at Avis than Alamo, so I used Avis instead. Basically, despite my having no desire to have ANY added expense to the cost of renting a car, Avis left the toll transponder turned on in the car that I was assigned. I did NOT request the transponder, nor was it in the contract I signed, so I had no way of knowing that it was activated until it was too late. When I made one round trip into Orlando, I discovered then, at the first return toll booth, that the transponder was activated because the agent told me my toll was already paid. I instructed him to reverse that charge because I did not authorize the transponder and I had cash to pay my own tolls. I got a receipt for payment of that toll and for the next three tolls that I encountered on my return to my mother's home. When it was time to return the car, the Avis office was closed and I could only drop the key off, not discuss the transponder issue. Within a week, I got a charge on my credit card from Avis for the use of the transponder and for the tolls from the 8 booths that I had gone through (even the 4 that I had receipts for). I talked to their customer service representative who insisted that I must have "run" the tolls without paying for them. When I was able to give him the location and exact time of 4 of the toll payments from my receipts, he credited me back about half of the charges. The fact that I never contracted with Avis to use the transponder appeared to be irrelevant to him. Furthermore, he gave me an email address to use to contact the toll authority about my complaints so I could potentially get the remaining refund. The email address turned out to be incorrect. Hmmm, in my opinion, there seems to be a pattern here. On my next trip to the Orlando-Sanford Airport, which will be soon, you can be sure that I will not be using Avis. Additionally, I have contacted Costco Travel to make them aware of the practices of this business that they promote. Note: I have tried to upload photos of my 4 toll receipts without success but I think everyone gets the idea. read more

I booked a car to pick up at Sanford and drop off at Clearwater/St Pete airport. I was never told I had to use a credit card because of this. I only keep a small credit card for emergencies. I had 265 available on it and my reservation was 275. The manager wouldn't waive the credit card requirement (even though I had a flight itinerary showing we fly out from Clearwater). She could have done this. She also wouldn't lower the rate 10 so that we could use my credit card. She could have also done this. We were 12 hours from home with no car. Shame on you Vanessa and Avis. Thanks to Thrifty/Dollar Rental for being human beings and making sure we could get to our destination. I will NEVER use Avis again. read more

WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS FRAUDULENT AND ILLEGAL!!! Mystery charge shows up on my credit card and when I called Avis customer service, they said it was for fuel. I filled the car up at the Racetrac station not 2 miles from the airport, and even PHOTOGRAPHED the cluster at drop off because nobody was there to check the car in. Had to go to the front counter to turn keys in and show clerk mileage and fuel readings. Their laziness and lack of procedure is used as loopholes to screw customers over. YUP, thats what they did! Luckily, I've been in the habit of taking pics of the car before taking the car and after dropping off so they cannot fabricate reasons to charge me more. Make sure to check your billing statement because they will charge you for fuel expenses even if you dropped the car off with a full tank. The rental agreement states that if you drive your car less than 75 miles they will charge you a flat gas fee. If you drive more than 75 miles you just have to return it on a full tank. I drove 492 miles and returned my car with a full tank a gas and then had to speak with three reps to get them to take off the charge. Had I not just been checking my account they would have stole 13 dollars from me. Which easily adds up if they are doing this to numerous customers. Will never rent from them again. read more

First off, they sent us to a bay number that did not exist in the lot. We rented for four days. On day two, the car failed to start. We finally got it started and called for a replacement. They never showed up, yet I received a text saying service was completed. We didn't even drive 100 miles, due to anticipation the car would fail to start again. I had two employees assist me, both in which I told I did not want the extra coverage during my rental but I was charged regardless. I called back once I returned my car about the charges. We reserved a car online and after we collected our luggage, we headed straight for the rental counter, which the time of day was now late afternoon/evening and getting dark. There was no problem with our reservation and we went through the normal sales pitch to upgrade the car, have them fill up the car with gas, etc. We declined it all, including the option to prepay tolls. We inquired about whether there would be a toll on our route and we told that there would not be. We found our car and headed out. Unfortunately, we found out there is a toll road and were not prepared to have exact change. Not wanting to go through a toll without paying, we thought to pull down the easy pass and take our chances. It did not work. We called the customer service rep and finally told that the person behind the counter should have turned on the easy pass anyway in case we did need it and any tolls would be billed to us later. Our only resolution would be that Avis would be billed for the toll and Avis would send us the bill for that toll. The car was fine throughout the rest of our journey and we came back to drop off the car at the end of the week to find that no one was there to check in the car and there were no spaces to park the car. Overall, I'm not impressed with Avis..I have experienced much better service from other companies. read more

I reserved a car through Avis several weeks before my trip. Once I arrived at the counter, I was told the car that I reserved was not there yet and I would either have to wait for it or I could upgrade for a charge. So, because I had to be somewhere, I agreed to upgrade for a charge. I asked the guy at the counter what was the point of reserving a car if it was not going to be available. I signed the information about the tolls, but was not planning on using the pass. I was never told the toll pass was on. I paid all of my tolls to and from my destination. On the way back to the airport, the toll worker told me that I didn't have to pay because I had the pass. I paid anyways because I did not want to use the toll pass. I was concerned and called Avis immediately. I spoke to someone in billing who told me to call back if there were any charges and she would take care of it. So, today, my credit card was charged. I called the billing department and the guy I spoke with told me that he could not help me and I would have to call the Florida Toll Department to get it taken care of, even though my charge came from Avis. I have rented through other companies in Florida and have never had this problem. I will never rent from Avis again. Their cheaper prices ended up not being cheaper and it was not worth this hassle. read more

BEWARE of what they bill you for. We booked Avis on Avis website and when we were trying to pick up our car, the customer service told us there was a system error, I should pay him more or I should accept a downgrade. When we rejected his proposal, he started yelling at my boyfriend to ask him not to speak as the car was under my name while all my boyfriend did was to ask clarifying questions. In the end we got the car that we reserved for but my billing showed I got charged 25% more. When I called Avis, I was told I was charged for an upgrade even though we were simply given the car we reserved for. Also, the customer service tried to persuade us to prepay for a whole tank of gas by telling us falsified information like if the tank is not full when we drop off the car, we are going to be charged $10/gallon, it's smarter to prepay. A WHOLE tank?! Even with exhaustion from traveling this was simply ridiculous to hear.
