STAY AWAY I went with Avis thinking it might be a safe option. I went with MAS last time, a local company. While it was horrifyingly slow they weren't criminals like AVIS. Absolutely stay away it's not worth the agony I asked for a refund and walked out. I asked the shuttle driver to take me back to the airport for the bus which costs $4. Terrible place, rude employees - the employee had such awful English and wasn't inclined to speak Spanish that I got so frustrated that I decided I couldn't trust them and had to go. she kept telling me $226 and $2,226 repeatedly. I kept asking her if she meant 200 and she would say yes, and then start saying $2.000 again!

ZERO STARS!!!!! Do not rent from this location. They rip people off with fraudulent charges for repairs. I was charged $600 for a very very minor mark on the windshield that I did not catch in the pre inspection. I am kicking myself for not reading the other reviews. It's a scam, there are others trying to sell you timeshares at check in, they put a huge $$ hold on your car, then they make you take out additional insurance which is basically worthless because they will charge you for something on the return, regardless of what you paid for. If I could give this place ZERO stars I must certainly would. Let's start by saying, I called not only the company and my insurance prior to my trip but I even chatted with someone via messaging regarding no issue with me using my own person insurance. Alright now that out there let's dive in. A sweet gentleman from the airport knew the Avis shuttle driver so he called to make sure he was waiting for me outside. The shuttle service guy was the best part about this company. Everyone and thing else was horrible. I get dropped off and so far everything is still going well. Walk in and no one greets me nor speaks to me for a few minutes. So I took it upon myself to address someone to assist me. I tell him my information and he tells me ok I can sign and points to my car...little do I know the scam is about to happen. He tells me a few more papers then looks at the screen randomly and stated oh you will have to put a $3500 hold on your card. OK FOLKS YES YOU DID SEE $3500...not $35 not $350 but $3500. Crazy right???!!! I have never heard of a such thing and have traveled all over the world. Again I made sure my insurance was good enough in their eyes prior to my trip so I didn't have to purchase their insurance. I kept getting reassured that it was completely fine. So who is lying here??? After over 30 mins and another employee comes over and literally tries to push a timeshare on me to lower the car rates...I can't make this up...I ask for the manager (pictured). He was also no help. He stated he could reduce the cost to $1500.....why is this even ok. At this point after a hour of back and forth I went ahead and instead of dealing I went online and purchased the extra insurance. As you see I took pictures of the people I had to interact with verify your their company. I would caution anyone trying to rent a car from this location.

Ridiculous! Look at the deposit hold there.

DO NOT RENT a car from this place. We have our own insurance and everything yet they try to exploit you into forcing their own insurance on you. If you don't buy their insurance, US$2800-5000 HOLD on your card?! Never had I heard of one. AVOID this place at all cost.

Avoid BBB Rental in Los Cabos - Scam Operation…read more I traveled to Los Cabos, Mexico, and needed a rental car. After reading countless negative reviews about rental companies overcharging tourists, I did extensive research and found a company called BBB that looked decent. They advertised $179 for 3 days with all insurance included (CDW, LIS, etc.), which sounded fair--so I booked it. When I arrived, BBB looked like a no-name company but was located near major rental agencies, so I thought I was safe. I was wrong. They advertised $179 but pushed a shady tactic: they told me their system charges in Mexican pesos only and claimed their internal exchange rate was nearly 21, meaning I'd be charged about $210, not $179. I told them I wanted to pay in USD as any international traveler should be able to do, but they refused. Then came the shocker -- the car they tried to give me was a dirty, beat-up, 14-year-old junker. No real rental company gives out cars like that. Most rotate vehicles every 2-3 years, but this place clearly bleeds them dry until they fall apart. I returned immediately and asked for a refund. To their credit, they refunded me on the spot--but probably because they expect travelers to come crawling back once they realize other rental desks are pricier last minute. Not this traveler. I jumped online and booked a car with Hertz UK. Because it was already after 1 PM, I chose a 4 PM pickup. But when I went to Hertz early, they gave me the car right away--a new, clean, 1-year-old vehicle, and the price really included all insurance: CDW, LIS, and more. They charged exactly $162.67. No conversion bullshit, no hidden fees, no scams. Bottom line: Avoid BBB rental in Los Cabos at all cost. They lure you in with a flat "all-inclusive" price, then nail you with hidden charges using fake exchange rates and hand you garbage cars. Book through Hertz UK or another trustworthy international channel where CDW, LIS, and other essential insurances are truly included in a transparent, fair price. BBB is nothing but a scam disguised as a rental company. Don't fall for it. Me cobraron exactamente $162.67 USD. No caigas.

Renting a car was one of the most confusing and intimidating aspects of planning our trip to Baja,…read morebut it ultimately wasn't so bad! A lot of negative reviews discuss tensions around insurance on check-in and overzealous inspections on return. I can't promise that you won't experience that at Alamo, but they treated me well in December 2025. I chose to reserve directly through Alamo's Mexican website (and used translation to make sure I understood what I was signing on for). I wanted to minimize the risk that I would expect something that was promised by a third-party site or even an American-oriented website. I'd seen recommendations to do this elsewhere, and it worked for me. I also checked with my credit card company (REI, Capital One, Mastercard) using mycardbenefits.com to print a proof of rental coverage, because Mexican law requires all cars/drivers to have the following: theft, liability for damages/injuries to third parties (TPL), comprehensive coverage costs due to a collision (CDW), and medical expenses for all occupants of the vehicle. Alamo's minimal insurance package included third-party liability (TPL) and personal accident coverage. My credit card covered collision damage (CDW) as well as theft and comprehensive coverage. I knew I was taking a risk each time I drove, because I didn't want to have to navigate an accident in a foreign country let alone two collaborating insurance systems. That said, I feel that this minimalist insurance would have worked if the worst had happened. You're welcome to get the full insurance; a lot of people recommend it for peace of mind. I was trying to thread the needle between not falling for a scam, signing on for a miserable experience, and not paying any more than I had to for our rental/insurance. Here's how our rental pricing worked out: (MXN) Time and mileage 9 days x 606.56=$5459.04 Third Party Liability Protection 9 days x 273.6=$2462.4 Personal Accident Insurance 9 days x 60.8=$547.19 Taxes: 16% on total reservation $1598.88 Airport use charge 18% $1524.36 Total: $11591.9 Mexican / $629.35 US (on 11/28/25) When we reached the Los Cabos airport, Alamo had a fixer and driver stationed at the exit to take us to their office. I was able to communicate with Alamo Mexico when our flight was delayed via WhatsApp that I found on their homepage. The check-in process was painless. The desk agent spoke English comfortably and didn't pressure us to change our insurance or other choices. I had printed the proof of insurance out as well as our reservation and other documents, including Alamo's insurance requirements language from their terms of service, but he only looked at the credit card confirmation. My Renault Logan was in decent shape. There were a few cosmetic blemishes and dings that the agent and I agreed were present at the start. I highly recommend taking your time to video and photograph the rental car comprehensively when you check it out. I didn't notice at first, but the gasket around the driver's side door had tears in it from the start. This wasn't an issue on check-in, but I worried that my pictures weren't going to do it justice if they noted that it hadn't been on our check-out damage inventory. The Logan we rented was a nice car. It had relatively high clearance for a small sedan (Always look out for speed bumps! They are not always well signed!) We were able to drive it on a mix of paved and somewhat well maintained gravel roads to and around Cabo Pulmo, Santiago, La Paz, Todos Santos, and Los Cabos. It didn't have cruise control or CarPlay/Android Auto, but it did have a touchscreen-based stereo with Bluetooth/USB connectivity and a backup camera as well as A/C. It got reasonable gas mileage and only needed one fill-up for over 540 km (335 miles) of driving. The return went very smoothly, and the staff were eager to leave a positive impression. They inspected the car without trying to find imaginary issues (rocks hitting the windshield or damage to the rims aren't covered by most rental insurance packages). I'd rent from Alamo again.

I had a confirmed reservation with Alamo at SJD that included Third Party Liability insurance. When…read moreI arrived, the counter staff told me I had to buy Personal Accident Insurance and roadside assistance, claiming it was required by Mexican law. I pushed back, told them I understood those were optional, but they refused to rent me the car unless I agreed. I eventually paid under protest. After the trip, I checked Alamo Mexico's own website and confirmed that the extra coverages they sold me are optional and not legally required. I contacted the Alamo Mexico right away. They refused to refund me for those charges. Since then, I've gone through months of follow-ups with Alamo US and Enterprise. I've had reps admit this violated their policy and promised to escalate, but nothing ever came of it. I've now been told there's "nothing more they can do." It's one thing to offer optional add-ons. It's another to falsely claim they're required by law to pressure customers at the counter. If you're renting at SJD, don't go here.

We arrived and went to the counter to rent the vehicle. We told them we decline all insurance coverage as it even states on their wall, additional insurance is NOT REQUIRED. When the agent gave me the paper work to sign, I noticed that they put insurance on the rental agreement and they tried to get me to sign it. I said I refused insurance and then they had to find a supervisor to remove it. I also declined fuel. When we returned the car the next week we drove it over it over an hour back to the airport. They told us everything was fine. We put filled the tank with fuel before we returned the car. When we received a copy of the final bill via email (this was a mistake, we should have demanded a physical copy), we found that they charged us for an entire tank of gas that we did not authorize and vehicle damage as they said vehicle had a flat tire. The vehicle didn't have a flat tire, we drove it an hour to get it to the airport, the tires were fine. Basically they will try to scam you here in all kind of ways!!! Stay Away!!! Also, when I sent in a dispute they refused to reimburse us for the "vehicle damage" aka flat tire and the fuel. They don't even have the right vehicle on the photos (see attached picture). We checked out a grey car, and returned a grey car. But the photos for the vehicle that they put on our check in form is white. We didn't paint the car!!!

What occurred at Hertz Cabo Airport (SJD) was not a mistake or "inventory issue" - it was a…read moredeliberate bait-and-switch scheme executed under the Hertz brand. Upon arrival, we checked in at the Hertz counter near baggage claim and were explicitly instructed by a Hertz employee to go outside and locate a woman holding a Hertz sign for shuttle transport to the rental facility. We followed these instructions exactly. The woman with the Hertz sign reviewed her list, confirmed that our reservation was on it, and then informed us that no Hertz vehicles were available. This explanation is indefensible. We had: * A confirmed reservation * Hertz President's Circle status * Arrival at the instructed pickup location * Written proof we were "on the list" When challenged, the representative offered shifting and contradictory excuses, including: * Booking through a third party * Not prepaying (which is not required nor standard for rental car reservations) She then asked how much we paid and what insurance we selected -- information that is irrelevant unless price manipulation is the intent. Immediately afterward, she summoned an individual from a different rental agency who offered a vehicle at a rate over FOUR TIMES higher than our confirmed reservation. This is textbook consumer deception. For clarity: AVASA franchises multiple brands at SJD (Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Firefly, Alamo, etc.) operating out of the same facility with a shared vehicle pool. The assertion that "Hertz has no cars" while sister brands miraculously have availability at predatory prices is patently false and intentionally misleading. When we requested to be taken to the Hertz office to speak with a manager, the shuttle was refused, effectively coercing us to accept the inflated alternative or be stranded. This conduct constitutes: * False advertising * Bait-and-switch sales practices * Misrepresentation of availability * Coercive and deceptive consumer practices It is shocking that Hertz permits its brand to be used this way. This was one of the most unethical experiences I've ever had while traveling internationally. Avoid Hertz at Cabo Airport at all costs. If you book here, expect your reservation to be meaningless and your arrival to be met with extortion-level pricing under duress. This location should be investigated.
