    Flea bites from rented vehicle
    Bryant C.

They make themselves out to be so honest, but at the end of the day are liars and cheats. I go to Cabo regularly, and this is hands down the worst experience I've ever had with a car rental. Fox, Cactus, and Alamo have all been great. Avoid BBB at all costs. TLDR: They did not give me the car that was promised. They then lied to me saying the only car available that met my requirement of separately folding seats in the back was a 20-year old SUV, and they charged me double, well over $100 / day to rent it. I later confirm that there were in fact many other cars available. The manager, Ruben, was possibly the rudest @$$hole of a service person I've ever interacted with. The car they gave me had fleas in it, and my family and I spent a good portion of our vacation itchy as hell, pulling our hair out trying to figure out where the bites were coming from until we discovered they were in the vehicle. Details: I needed a vehicle, where 1 or 2 of the back seats could fall down and expand the trunk, but still be able to seat a person in the back. In my confirmation email, they tell me that I will receive a VW Jetta. Yes, in an earlier email they did say that a VW Jetta, Kia Forte, and other cars were all possibilities, but in the FINAL confirmation email, they wrote that I would be getting a VW Jetta, which I confirmed met my requirements. When I arrive, they give me a Kia Forte, which does not meet my requirements. At this point, they force me to rent a nearly 20-year old 2005 Toyota 4Runner for double the price, claiming that no other vehicles were available. Just a couple weeks ago, they were trying to upsell me on multiple larger vehicles for just a little more money, but now they have nothing left!? On top of that, when I returned the car, I asked the attendant whether it was a busy week, and he told me not at all they hardly had any business, so I was CLEARLY LIED TO when they said there were no other vehicles available. These cheats just wanted to juice me for as much money as possible. Equally infuriating at the time was just how incredibly rude the manager was. I seriously have never been so upset with a service person. When I calmly tried to explain how it was confusing that the final email clearly stated that I would receive a VW Jetta, he responded, "It's confusing for you. It's not confusing for anyone else." At this point, I was with my 2-year old baby after a long and tiring flight, we had reservations to make, and we were not in the mood to deal with having to go to another rental agency. On top of that, they already ran my card, which, in hindsight, I probably could have gotten charged back with the credit card company. I ended up taking the old, literally creaking, SUV. Now here is where things got EVEN WORSE. After dinner, I start getting incredibly itchy bites all over my ankles and feet. The next day, I get even more of them and so does my wife. In total, we end up with about 20 bites each. We are at our wits end trying to figure out where they are coming from. The third day, I take the vehicle out alone, and I get more bites ONLY AFTER driving, and my wife, who did not come with me, did not get any additional ones. It's at this point, I suspect they came from the vehicle. Low and behold, a search reveals evidence of flea droppings.

    Great space to work from

These guys took good care of us. Fees were up front, no surprises like the big guys, and getting there from the airport was seamless. Ruben went above and beyond and gave me a space to take last minute work calls as I waited for the others to land. GREAT WIFI, clean bathrooms, even gave me some coffee! If you are reading this, you can destress a little about renting in Mexico, congrats! Keyvan, San Francisco

Not that you need a waiting area, but clean and comfy

Reuben is the BEST!!!! Talk about SERVICE. What an honest, reasonable and wonderful car rental place! For once! We found everything from booking, arriving, getting the car, dropping the car, getting back to the airport PERFECTLY smooth. Couldn't have gone better --truly, thank you for making stressful times better for families with young children. GRACIAS Reuben :)

I have rented from BBB the last 3 times I went to baja. Customer service was great. The price we were quoted is the price we payed. When i contacted them via email in regards to a vehicle we were interested in the emailed back with the price of the vehicle including the taxes and insurance. I appreciate not getting surprised with extra costs at the time of pick up. The 3 times I have rented from 3, 3 different cars, have been great for us. When we go to Baja we don't stay in the resort much. We like to get out. In our last visit we went to playa el tecolote, Todos Santos 3 times, cabo twice and had to drop friends of at the airport halfway through our vacation. Not 1 problem with the vehicle. I will absolutely keep going to BBB when I go to Baja

There were some smaller inconveniences (over an hour late to pick us up at the airport, not having enough room in the vehicle to fit myself and the 4 people I was travelling with without us having to sit on each other's laps, vehicle being in below average to average condition at best, etc.), which our group was more than willing to overlook...no problem. However, when we got to All In Car to sign the paperwork (which should have been our first sign that something was off since the previous year the car was just dropped off at the airport/we signed everything there), we were given 2 options - pay $500 for "optional" full-coverage insurance OR pay 10% of the vehicle's cost if any damage was found on it. The vehicle was already beat up - scratches everywhere, bumper taped up/falling off, cracks in the windshield, etc., so it wasn't hard to see that All In Car was going to make us financially responsible for some much needed repairs on the van that we didn't create or just wanted some extra money in their pockets. We kindly asked about the policy and mentioned that we had been using the company for the past 3 years without any issues. You know you're fully getting ripped off when the previous owner of the company (who we had rented through the previous years) would not make eye contact with anyone in the group while the "new policy" was being explained by the new management company. Additionally, none of this was relayed to us upon booking. Should we have known, we would have rented through a different company and happily paid a higher daily rate versus being swindled at the last minute when we didn't have any other options. All in all, what was supposed to be a $400 rental for 5 days cost us close to 1K...for a below average-to-average small minivan. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. You've been warned!

We arrived and went to the counter to rent the vehicle. We told them we decline all insurance coverage as it even states on their wall, additional insurance is NOT REQUIRED. When the agent gave me the paper work to sign, I noticed that they put insurance on the rental agreement and they tried to get me to sign it. I said I refused insurance and then they had to find a supervisor to remove it. I also declined fuel. When we returned the car the next week we drove it over it over an hour back to the airport. They told us everything was fine. We put filled the tank with fuel before we returned the car. When we received a copy of the final bill via email (this was a mistake, we should have demanded a physical copy), we found that they charged us for an entire tank of gas that we did not authorize and vehicle damage as they said vehicle had a flat tire. The vehicle didn't have a flat tire, we drove it an hour to get it to the airport, the tires were fine. Basically they will try to scam you here in all kind of ways!!! Stay Away!!! Also, when I sent in a dispute they refused to reimburse us for the "vehicle damage" aka flat tire and the fuel. They don't even have the right vehicle on the photos (see attached picture). We checked out a grey car, and returned a grey car. But the photos for the vehicle that they put on our check in form is white. We didn't paint the car!!!

What occurred at Hertz Cabo Airport (SJD) was not a mistake or "inventory issue" - it was a…read moredeliberate bait-and-switch scheme executed under the Hertz brand. Upon arrival, we checked in at the Hertz counter near baggage claim and were explicitly instructed by a Hertz employee to go outside and locate a woman holding a Hertz sign for shuttle transport to the rental facility. We followed these instructions exactly. The woman with the Hertz sign reviewed her list, confirmed that our reservation was on it, and then informed us that no Hertz vehicles were available. This explanation is indefensible. We had: * A confirmed reservation * Hertz President's Circle status * Arrival at the instructed pickup location * Written proof we were "on the list" When challenged, the representative offered shifting and contradictory excuses, including: * Booking through a third party * Not prepaying (which is not required nor standard for rental car reservations) She then asked how much we paid and what insurance we selected -- information that is irrelevant unless price manipulation is the intent. Immediately afterward, she summoned an individual from a different rental agency who offered a vehicle at a rate over FOUR TIMES higher than our confirmed reservation. This is textbook consumer deception. For clarity: AVASA franchises multiple brands at SJD (Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty, Firefly, Alamo, etc.) operating out of the same facility with a shared vehicle pool. The assertion that "Hertz has no cars" while sister brands miraculously have availability at predatory prices is patently false and intentionally misleading. When we requested to be taken to the Hertz office to speak with a manager, the shuttle was refused, effectively coercing us to accept the inflated alternative or be stranded. This conduct constitutes: * False advertising * Bait-and-switch sales practices * Misrepresentation of availability * Coercive and deceptive consumer practices It is shocking that Hertz permits its brand to be used this way. This was one of the most unethical experiences I've ever had while traveling internationally. Avoid Hertz at Cabo Airport at all costs. If you book here, expect your reservation to be meaningless and your arrival to be met with extortion-level pricing under duress. This location should be investigated.

Renting a car was one of the most confusing and intimidating aspects of planning our trip to Baja,…read morebut it ultimately wasn't so bad! A lot of negative reviews discuss tensions around insurance on check-in and overzealous inspections on return. I can't promise that you won't experience that at Alamo, but they treated me well in December 2025. I chose to reserve directly through Alamo's Mexican website (and used translation to make sure I understood what I was signing on for). I wanted to minimize the risk that I would expect something that was promised by a third-party site or even an American-oriented website. I'd seen recommendations to do this elsewhere, and it worked for me. I also checked with my credit card company (REI, Capital One, Mastercard) using mycardbenefits.com to print a proof of rental coverage, because Mexican law requires all cars/drivers to have the following: theft, liability for damages/injuries to third parties (TPL), comprehensive coverage costs due to a collision (CDW), and medical expenses for all occupants of the vehicle. Alamo's minimal insurance package included third-party liability (TPL) and personal accident coverage. My credit card covered collision damage (CDW) as well as theft and comprehensive coverage. I knew I was taking a risk each time I drove, because I didn't want to have to navigate an accident in a foreign country let alone two collaborating insurance systems. That said, I feel that this minimalist insurance would have worked if the worst had happened. You're welcome to get the full insurance; a lot of people recommend it for peace of mind. I was trying to thread the needle between not falling for a scam, signing on for a miserable experience, and not paying any more than I had to for our rental/insurance. Here's how our rental pricing worked out: (MXN) Time and mileage 9 days x 606.56=$5459.04 Third Party Liability Protection 9 days x 273.6=$2462.4 Personal Accident Insurance 9 days x 60.8=$547.19 Taxes: 16% on total reservation $1598.88 Airport use charge 18% $1524.36 Total: $11591.9 Mexican / $629.35 US (on 11/28/25) When we reached the Los Cabos airport, Alamo had a fixer and driver stationed at the exit to take us to their office. I was able to communicate with Alamo Mexico when our flight was delayed via WhatsApp that I found on their homepage. The check-in process was painless. The desk agent spoke English comfortably and didn't pressure us to change our insurance or other choices. I had printed the proof of insurance out as well as our reservation and other documents, including Alamo's insurance requirements language from their terms of service, but he only looked at the credit card confirmation. My Renault Logan was in decent shape. There were a few cosmetic blemishes and dings that the agent and I agreed were present at the start. I highly recommend taking your time to video and photograph the rental car comprehensively when you check it out. I didn't notice at first, but the gasket around the driver's side door had tears in it from the start. This wasn't an issue on check-in, but I worried that my pictures weren't going to do it justice if they noted that it hadn't been on our check-out damage inventory. The Logan we rented was a nice car. It had relatively high clearance for a small sedan (Always look out for speed bumps! They are not always well signed!) We were able to drive it on a mix of paved and somewhat well maintained gravel roads to and around Cabo Pulmo, Santiago, La Paz, Todos Santos, and Los Cabos. It didn't have cruise control or CarPlay/Android Auto, but it did have a touchscreen-based stereo with Bluetooth/USB connectivity and a backup camera as well as A/C. It got reasonable gas mileage and only needed one fill-up for over 540 km (335 miles) of driving. The return went very smoothly, and the staff were eager to leave a positive impression. They inspected the car without trying to find imaginary issues (rocks hitting the windshield or damage to the rims aren't covered by most rental insurance packages). I'd rent from Alamo again.

I had a confirmed reservation with Alamo at SJD that included Third Party Liability insurance. When…read moreI arrived, the counter staff told me I had to buy Personal Accident Insurance and roadside assistance, claiming it was required by Mexican law. I pushed back, told them I understood those were optional, but they refused to rent me the car unless I agreed. I eventually paid under protest. After the trip, I checked Alamo Mexico's own website and confirmed that the extra coverages they sold me are optional and not legally required. I contacted the Alamo Mexico right away. They refused to refund me for those charges. Since then, I've gone through months of follow-ups with Alamo US and Enterprise. I've had reps admit this violated their policy and promised to escalate, but nothing ever came of it. I've now been told there's "nothing more they can do." It's one thing to offer optional add-ons. It's another to falsely claim they're required by law to pressure customers at the counter. If you're renting at SJD, don't go here.
