I am a Hertz President's Circle member, and this was by far the worst rental experience I've ever had. I upgraded to an Alfa Romeo at the Cabo San José location for business meetings. The car was filthy inside and out -- sand, coffee stains, sticky residue, mud everywhere. I sent it back twice for cleaning, each time waiting about 20 minutes, and it was still dirty. I eventually had to clean it myself at my hotel in under 10 minutes. No follow-up or accountability from staff. The car was delivered with only 1/4 tank of gas (paperwork initially said 5/8, later corrected), and the vehicle itself was mechanically unsafe -- heavy vibration, misaligned steering, and pulling to the right. The next day I had a flat tire while traveling with three colleagues. Roadside assistance said a tow would take three hours and only carry two people, then told me to drive with a flat tire to another location. After nearly four hours, I was told they didn't want to deal with the hassle of the flat tire and was instructed to drive again with a flat tire. Only after calling Hertz Corporate did they agree to replace the car -- with a lower-tier vehicle that was even dirtier than the first. Mud, sand, sticky surfaces, and even a dirty towel left inside. I have photos of everything. Nearly nine hours were wasted, I missed meals, and I was late to all my business meetings. No compensation was offered for the downgrade, filthy vehicles, or massive inconvenience. Completely unacceptable and unsafe experience. I would not recommend this location to anyone.

Sign on the wall saying that the rental comes with the minimum third party insurance.

I read all the reviews here and was worried about being scammed for the rental when using my credit card insurance. At my surprise when I got there there was a sign on multiple walls that insurance is not required and it comes with the minimum 3rd party insurance. They were really not pushy at all when I said I had insurance, I just had to sign a paper that I didn't want their insurance. Rental process and return was a breeze. I only paid $50 for 3 days of rental.

Look at all the added fees!

This place will completely gouge you on the cost of insurance and taxes. I reserved online and my 5 day rental was a little over $100. Now I know that doesn't include insurance or airport fees so i usually multiply the quoted price by 3 to 4. This time we paid over $700 for a 5 day rental. Our insurance was $63 per day- another couple we chatted with paid $50 per day for their car and were upsold by $1000. Go elsewhere!!! We have been Hertz customers for a long time and have rented here on many occasions. They used to be fair but the last few rentals the cost of insurance and taxes have continued to go up! And although they offer a nissan or chevy vehicle - you'll get stuck with a Renault- a vehicle that cannot meet US safety standards.

The worst rental car companies in Cabo

Pay attention to the low ratings. This location will do everything they can to charge you more. Insurance, time of arrival, don't have what you rented but we can upsell you. Every trick in the book. Use national or enterprise at San Jose del Cabo. Especially if you have insurance through your credit ca

Dirty vehicle inside and out. They lagged because they were washing and pumping gas

STAY AWAY FROM THIS CRAPPY RENTAL LOCATION. If I could give this place no stars I would! They "upgraded" the vehicle because their small suv couldn't fit all the people we needed. We waited 3 HOURS to get this upgrade because according to them we got this super last minute. They gave us a FILTHY mini van and the attendants response was "yea well you were in a hurry to get the vehicle".WELL YEA WE WAITED 2.5 HOURS! When we asked for a discount , they were adamant that we could not. When we asked for their names to make a formal complaint , they all denied to give us their name. General manager was a complete asshole too. LIKE I SAID, STAY AWAY FROM THIS SHITHOLE.

Hold for over 15 mins and other attempts were unsuccessful

Worst car rental company they ruined my entire vacation the car they rented us broke down in less than hour and when we called for roadside assistance they expressed zero concern or urgency and said a tow truck would come and get us and take us back to the hertz location THAT NEVER HAPPENED we were stuck in the street for 3+hrs with no additional follow up or help from them and we were left STRANDED!

ZERO STARS!! I wish Yelp had a no stars rating. First of all we booked on Expedia and we reserved a JEEP WRANGLER. When we got to the place the guy said that they didn't even have the car in their lot to rent. So we got stuck with a NISSAN KICKS.. what kind of car is that?? Anyway, we were supposed to pay $300 car and insurance included. We even bought $66 extra insurance on the website before we got to cabo. So basically once we got to cabo we went to pickup our car and they said the insurance we bought on Expedia was NOT ENOUGH. He said we had to buy a $350k USD liability insurance.. wtf lol I don't even need that in the United States. Anyway... don't come here.... They just SCAM SCAM SCAM. Also be careful if you do end up renting a car with the "COPS" here. They will try and shake you down, especially if they know you're a tourist. They did that to us. They stopped us and said the driver was on his phone. I was the passenger and I had my phone on me, but he said the driver was on the phone which again HE WASNT. Anyway, they pulled us over and said he had to keep the drivers DRIVER LICENSE... there's no way we were going to leave our documents here in Mexico LMFAO. Anyway... we told him no one was on the phone and he called his "supervisor" and they were just BSing the whole time because I told him show me proof the driver was on his phone and he didn't have proof so basically he had to let us go. I would honestly just say DONT COME TO CABO.

Should have read the reviews. It takes 45min to get your car that you've booked weeks ago. Shitty operation.

Avoid BBB Rental in Los Cabos - Scam Operation…read more I traveled to Los Cabos, Mexico, and needed a rental car. After reading countless negative reviews about rental companies overcharging tourists, I did extensive research and found a company called BBB that looked decent. They advertised $179 for 3 days with all insurance included (CDW, LIS, etc.), which sounded fair--so I booked it. When I arrived, BBB looked like a no-name company but was located near major rental agencies, so I thought I was safe. I was wrong. They advertised $179 but pushed a shady tactic: they told me their system charges in Mexican pesos only and claimed their internal exchange rate was nearly 21, meaning I'd be charged about $210, not $179. I told them I wanted to pay in USD as any international traveler should be able to do, but they refused. Then came the shocker -- the car they tried to give me was a dirty, beat-up, 14-year-old junker. No real rental company gives out cars like that. Most rotate vehicles every 2-3 years, but this place clearly bleeds them dry until they fall apart. I returned immediately and asked for a refund. To their credit, they refunded me on the spot--but probably because they expect travelers to come crawling back once they realize other rental desks are pricier last minute. Not this traveler. I jumped online and booked a car with Hertz UK. Because it was already after 1 PM, I chose a 4 PM pickup. But when I went to Hertz early, they gave me the car right away--a new, clean, 1-year-old vehicle, and the price really included all insurance: CDW, LIS, and more. They charged exactly $162.67. No conversion bullshit, no hidden fees, no scams. Bottom line: Avoid BBB rental in Los Cabos at all cost. They lure you in with a flat "all-inclusive" price, then nail you with hidden charges using fake exchange rates and hand you garbage cars. Book through Hertz UK or another trustworthy international channel where CDW, LIS, and other essential insurances are truly included in a transparent, fair price. BBB is nothing but a scam disguised as a rental company. Don't fall for it. Me cobraron exactamente $162.67 USD. No caigas.

Renting a car was one of the most confusing and intimidating aspects of planning our trip to Baja,…read morebut it ultimately wasn't so bad! A lot of negative reviews discuss tensions around insurance on check-in and overzealous inspections on return. I can't promise that you won't experience that at Alamo, but they treated me well in December 2025. I chose to reserve directly through Alamo's Mexican website (and used translation to make sure I understood what I was signing on for). I wanted to minimize the risk that I would expect something that was promised by a third-party site or even an American-oriented website. I'd seen recommendations to do this elsewhere, and it worked for me. I also checked with my credit card company (REI, Capital One, Mastercard) using mycardbenefits.com to print a proof of rental coverage, because Mexican law requires all cars/drivers to have the following: theft, liability for damages/injuries to third parties (TPL), comprehensive coverage costs due to a collision (CDW), and medical expenses for all occupants of the vehicle. Alamo's minimal insurance package included third-party liability (TPL) and personal accident coverage. My credit card covered collision damage (CDW) as well as theft and comprehensive coverage. I knew I was taking a risk each time I drove, because I didn't want to have to navigate an accident in a foreign country let alone two collaborating insurance systems. That said, I feel that this minimalist insurance would have worked if the worst had happened. You're welcome to get the full insurance; a lot of people recommend it for peace of mind. I was trying to thread the needle between not falling for a scam, signing on for a miserable experience, and not paying any more than I had to for our rental/insurance. Here's how our rental pricing worked out: (MXN) Time and mileage 9 days x 606.56=$5459.04 Third Party Liability Protection 9 days x 273.6=$2462.4 Personal Accident Insurance 9 days x 60.8=$547.19 Taxes: 16% on total reservation $1598.88 Airport use charge 18% $1524.36 Total: $11591.9 Mexican / $629.35 US (on 11/28/25) When we reached the Los Cabos airport, Alamo had a fixer and driver stationed at the exit to take us to their office. I was able to communicate with Alamo Mexico when our flight was delayed via WhatsApp that I found on their homepage. The check-in process was painless. The desk agent spoke English comfortably and didn't pressure us to change our insurance or other choices. I had printed the proof of insurance out as well as our reservation and other documents, including Alamo's insurance requirements language from their terms of service, but he only looked at the credit card confirmation. My Renault Logan was in decent shape. There were a few cosmetic blemishes and dings that the agent and I agreed were present at the start. I highly recommend taking your time to video and photograph the rental car comprehensively when you check it out. I didn't notice at first, but the gasket around the driver's side door had tears in it from the start. This wasn't an issue on check-in, but I worried that my pictures weren't going to do it justice if they noted that it hadn't been on our check-out damage inventory. The Logan we rented was a nice car. It had relatively high clearance for a small sedan (Always look out for speed bumps! They are not always well signed!) We were able to drive it on a mix of paved and somewhat well maintained gravel roads to and around Cabo Pulmo, Santiago, La Paz, Todos Santos, and Los Cabos. It didn't have cruise control or CarPlay/Android Auto, but it did have a touchscreen-based stereo with Bluetooth/USB connectivity and a backup camera as well as A/C. It got reasonable gas mileage and only needed one fill-up for over 540 km (335 miles) of driving. The return went very smoothly, and the staff were eager to leave a positive impression. They inspected the car without trying to find imaginary issues (rocks hitting the windshield or damage to the rims aren't covered by most rental insurance packages). I'd rent from Alamo again.

I had a confirmed reservation with Alamo at SJD that included Third Party Liability insurance. When…read moreI arrived, the counter staff told me I had to buy Personal Accident Insurance and roadside assistance, claiming it was required by Mexican law. I pushed back, told them I understood those were optional, but they refused to rent me the car unless I agreed. I eventually paid under protest. After the trip, I checked Alamo Mexico's own website and confirmed that the extra coverages they sold me are optional and not legally required. I contacted the Alamo Mexico right away. They refused to refund me for those charges. Since then, I've gone through months of follow-ups with Alamo US and Enterprise. I've had reps admit this violated their policy and promised to escalate, but nothing ever came of it. I've now been told there's "nothing more they can do." It's one thing to offer optional add-ons. It's another to falsely claim they're required by law to pressure customers at the counter. If you're renting at SJD, don't go here.
