I was disheartened and dispirited with every other school that I had tried previously. 10th planet Boca Raton so far has given me everything I was looking for in a school and community and more that I didn't even realize I wanted. Heather and the coaches are some of the most welcoming and warm people I have met, not just as coaches but as people. They are also extremely knowledgeable and make sure everyone is safe, paid attention to, encouraged, heard, and enjoying themselves. The culture and vibe this gym has feels like family or close friends you have known for years, and I have only been there a week. They make all classes and techniques accessible to everyone regardless of your skill level, athletic ability, or size. They also encourage everyone to try every class offered no matter your goals. As a female, it added another layer of intimidation to finding a school due to the predominantly male participation in most martial arts. Instead of being left as the odd one out, the guys have been extremely respectful and friendly, often saying hi without even knowing my name. I felt welcomed and everyone there were all really cool guys who were extremely knowledgeable and helped me with technique, positoning, they all literally answered every question I had! The only reason I give 4 starts is because there is a 40$ drop in fee which after buying a rash guard to support the gym means 95$ for a class and a souvenir. I'd love to go again but at that price it just is too much for me unfortunately but I would 100% pop in for a class again next time I'm down here! I was introduced to the instructor by a friend. Marcelo Silveira is a high ranking black belt and one of the original founders of American Top Team. Jiu jitus is a very physically demanding sport. It's also inhabited by a lot of rough trade. Its not for the weak of heart. There is a lot of hazing, bullying, ranks and cliques. You expect that going in. You learn to survive and hold your own. Its combat sports, not needle knitting. Lots of egos and attitudes. For 8 years I was a loyal student. I fought and competed and represented the school and my teammates. I tolerated the non-stop hazing. The homophobic slurs and name calling. The insults. I never complained. I went from white belt to purple belt in 8 years. During the 8 years I watched the instructor mistreat and abuse several students with years of history. Attempt to sleep with female students. Throw people out for one perceived slight or another. At one point I was suspended for not coming to class. The instructor told everyone he didnt care who had to work. If you miss class your out. Oct 6 I was rolling with the instructor and he purposely ripped my arm over my head with no warning and no opportunity to tap. My pec was torn off the bone, Torn bicep, torn rotator, permanent damage to the shoulder joint. It only went downhill from there. Tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills. 4-6 months of rehab 3-4 months I cant work. The arrogance of the instructor. No insurance. No business license. I had paid money for privates and even paid money in advance for a seminar which he has refused to return. He doesnt care about his students in the least. This man is a menace. He shouldnt be teaching anywhere. I started talking to other members in the community. This is not an isolated incident. There is a long history of this. He is known for this. Most everyone in the community stopped dealing with him years ago for his antics and behavior. This is why he has no students. This isnt sour grapes. Im not a white-belt. I was a senior student with a perfect record of conduct on the mats. A loyal teammate and one of his best students. I trusted this man as my coach and instructor and spent 8 years working my ass off and putting up with so much drama and disrespect. As a professional coach of over 30 years I am disgusted. This man uses jiu jitsu as an excuse to mistreat and abuse people. He holds jiu jitsu over peoples heads. Ive been a business owner and member of the Boca Raton community since 2009. I stand by my statements. He shouldnt be teaching. He's a low life excuse for a human. Beware.

Marcelo (the owner) was very knowledgeable and welcoming. He even rolled with me (which I thought was very kind considering I was just a guest for the week). All the students had great attitudes too! I appreciated that a lot too because I've visited gyms while traveling where students and instructors were less than hospitable and just used guest as training dummies. All that said....I found my gym in South Florida!

Update: it's been three years since we joined and I have to say that we are still in love with…read morethis place! Santos, Ryan, Solon and of course Hailey are the bomb! They have taught great skills to both of my kids and I see a sense of self pride in them wherever they go. My son has actually used the "warning" method they teach when someone attempts to bully. He has given potential bullies warnings and then not just takes the bully down, but has the intelligence and respect for his opponent to submit only as much as necessary to keep himself safe. Thankfully he doesn't have to defend himself too often, but I know that he is proud of his skills and uses them appropriately. My daughter has attended for two years and kicks some butt!
