As appetizer I had the vegetable sambusa and the mushroom tibs. Both were really good but watch out for the spicy peppers in the mushroom tibs in case you are cant handle heat. My friend and I shared a combo which consist of Doro Wat chicken, beef tibs, Shiro (mushed chick peas) , yatakilt Alicha (potatoes with cabbage) and Gome (collard greens) The beef tibs, yatakilt alicha and Shiro were my favorites. Enjoying Ethiopian cuisine was the perfect way to finish a date that started with the amazing Black Panther movie. But fortunately you don't have to take a plane to Wakanda to experience incredible African culture. The mango drink my date ordered was refreshing and beautifully presented. The spiced tea's aromatic blend of cinnamon, cardamom and other spices was unexpectedly special. The Vegan Combo for two gave us a generous assortment of classic Ethiopian staples (berbere lentil stew, greens, potatoes and cabbage, etc) with the classic injere which makes everything better! I've been to Awash a number of times. When it's good, it's great. For the price point, the food is excellent, the drinks are great, and the atmosphere is nice. So on a good night, it's a 5/5. The problem is when it's bad. I had the most infuriating dining experience of my life at Awash. On a Friday night with a restaurant empty except for three other patrons, it took 20 minutes for our drinks to be served (most of that 20 minutes watching the bartenders chat and use their phones, right in front of us, and showing no urgency until we complained about the lack of drinks). Bartenders and wait staff were rude and chose not to communicate. At the end of our dinner, we waited another 20 minutes to get our check, and asked three times in a row for our check... at which point the manager came out to tell us, finally, that (1) their computer POS system was down for the entire dinner service and they could take cash only, and (2) their ATM was out of cash. I had go to four different bodegas to find a working ATM five blocks away. And when I got back, they still hadn't given a check. They finally gave us a scrap of paper with our total jotted down in Sharpie. If I could, I'd give this experience a 0/5. Again, every time I had gone to Awash before, it had been great. But this one visit destroyed almost all good will I had for the restaurant before, and I'm very hesitant to ever go again. read more

I was meeting my daughter's boyfriend's mother for the first time. Where to go that we ALL could agree is good?? Here! It was here!! We all love Ethiopian and 4 out of the 5 at the dinner are vegan/vegetarian so this is the most obvious option. I had not been here yet, but my daughter and her BF love it. I'm taking one star off because it is so dark in here that we could not read our menus without using phones, but apart from that this is everything I could ever want in a restaurant! We ordered two vegetarian entrees; one collard greens and the other berber lentils. Each came with two sides(beet salad, kale salad, potato/cabbage, and split pea), so we tried six things in all! They were each excellent. The lentils are a bit spicy but everything else is mild while still being flavorful. The injera is thick enough to be used to scoop up all of the other stuff, and they give you plenty of extra rolled up injera. We also recommend the non alcoholic ginger beer, though it's very sweet. Excellent service, really friendly people who came over frequently to make sure we were happy and had everything we needed. Pay cash or card. Who, besides Ethiopians, know out of the gate that Ethiopian food is awesome? Don't be scared by the fact you don't have utensils (it's actually a nice throwback to when you were a kid). Do wash your hands very well before eating (you should anyway). After a beautiful renovation a little over a year ago you feel the quality of those place come out in the ambience and not just the food. It'll be hard to figure out what you may like so opt for a combo with meats. Extra spongy bread will help you soak up all the goodness. The sambusas are a crowd pleaser to start (particularly for the kids). If you drink give their specialty cocktails a try or the Ethiopian beer. I'd also recommend coming here on a weeknight as it can get packed on the weekends (I think the word is out). Itd be great if they had more help during those peak times but if you're patient it's worth the wait. read more

First time trying Ethiopian food with friends. We were very excited as we always see Awash gets pretty busy at night. We started off with Veggie Sambusas, which were delicious! The dough was very crunchy. We ordered a few different things to share: avocado salad (super fresh!), veggie combo (beautiful, loved the selection), special tibs (that night it was marinated ribeye, absolutely love the spices), kitfo (think steak tartare with very interesting spices!) and a lamb dish (we really enjoyed it). The concept of no silverware is challenging at first, but we had so much fun eating the traditional way - using injera (I see it as more of a crepe than bread) to transport the flavors into your mouth. I definitely recommend sharing everything so you can try more variety. Service was very quick but still attentive. I love how they didn't mind us staying for quite a while enjoying our time with friends - really appreciate when I don't feel "kicked out". read more

The tables were completely packed down to the last square foot. My friends and I decided to wait, which took about 15 minutes. We walked up and down the street and when we came back our table was ready. I had been to this restaurant before, and it used to be really trendy. There used to be no authenticity to the food, but tonight was a little different. The room as a whole was neat and tidy, as were the bathrooms. I was dying to eat a sambusa, a meat filled pastry. My friends and I shared the dish, and it was delicious. As greasy and filling as it was, it was very flavorful, especially with the sauce it came with! For our entree we ordered a meat sampler, and a vegan sampler. Two of those meals came with berbere (a tasty spice). Of course the whole meal had injera (spongey bread) included. All in all, the variety of dishes completed all of our appetites, and satisfied us to a great extent. This is my favorite Ethopian restaurant. It's cute and trendy. I've been to a fair amount of other Ethiopian restaurants and I'd say this one is a little more hipstery and less authentic than the other ones I've been to aesthetic wise, but I feel they work with it well. They also have a different take on cocktails, but still created with honey wine so you get a taste of the country. The food itself is a high flavor profile, it's very complex. The injera is nice and firm and slightly tart. Every time we come in, it's usually busy yet service never lacks. They're always quick on the uptake, will offer more injera without even asking and they're incredibly friendly. This has become my place of choice when I visit my boyfriend in Brooklyn. My first Ethiopian food experience was very pleasant. I ordered a vegan dish that consisted of chickpeas, tomatoes, & probably one other ingredient shown on the menu (the dish was called Shiro). I say that because I had no idea what to expect & I'm a picky eater.... It arrived as 3 tasty, separate mixtures with the best part being something that looked like a very thick tomato-y paste on top of something else that looked like a huge tortilla except it had a million tiny holes in it that reminded me of the beach sand shore. Interesting and tasty. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this meal. Would I return? Probably, just for that one meal. I love Ethiopian food. I go around NYC's boroughs trying all the Ethiopian restaurants there are. There are not that many, so I can definitely say this... This is the worst Ethiopian food I've ever had. First, the Ethiopian-themed Moscow mule was almost alcohol-free. If even half an ounce of fig vodka was used in my drink, I would be surprised. Secondly, the servings were stingy. I got the vegan sampler for 1. It was more like a sampler for one-fourth. I knew just seeing the cheap portion that this food was already terrible. At that moment, I wanted to say that I changed my mind and didn't want to eat there, but I couldn't... Ethiopian entrees are $19+ wherever you go. But you feel alright paying that because you always get a bunch of food. There was literally a big ass blank space on my plate tonight at Awash... Finally, to add insult to injury, the food was bland and warm-going-on-cold. I got there with an hour and a half left until closing, so the quality and quantity of the food were both surprising disappointments. Altogether, I paid $40 for one of the worst dining experiences. I should have gone to Ghenet instead. Ultimately, the waiter came by and asked if everything was ok, and from the look on HER face, she knew damn well she had served my date and I poopoo platters. We had to wait a little bit for a table but were able to order drinks at the bar first - something with a honey wine, champagne and raspberry (??) - I don't know what they called it but it was delicious! We've been at this location of Awash a number of times in the past but not since the remodeling. The decor is beautiful and the paintings on the wall only add to its beauty. It does seem to be under new management. They now bring you packaged wipes to clean your hands when you are seated, which is very nice! And while the food was tasty, it was cold. The injera was also different. It was cold, hard, and did not have that sour taste (probably because it was cold).
