For my first and last time at AYA I must report that the sushi is wonderful. I ordered take out - which seemed to come as a surprise to the hostess as there was no take out menu or even take-a-copy menu for later. No business cards either. There is a 20 page stiff menu. Overwhelming. I asked how to order from home and she gave me a copy of the chef's copy of my receipt with their name, phone and address........ As for the sushi it was wonderful, precisely prepared, presentation great, FRESH, luscious. As for the place, I found it inviting and sparsely lovely. I will not be going back because I waited 26 minutes for take out, not one person employed there made eye contact or spoke with me. The unagi don was pretty good. Sushi not quite. Service is very good. I did notice majority of its customers are non Asian. What's interesting on their menu is that they also have Korean dishes. Not sure if it's Japanese Korean fusion? They do have bento boxes for $9.95 available from 11am to 3pm. Their boxes are Pretty good decent portion. Came here with a bunch of friends and the server didn't ask us if we wanted tea or water. They gave us all glasses of ice water. Ok I am fine with that. I did find the miso soup a bit salty. Not my fav. Sushi rice seems to be quite cold. Decor is quite nice. When I walked in there was this Japanese restaurant smell. This is good. Place is quite clean. Washroom was clean. There are lots of parking outside in the mall. This is a plus. Will I come back. Well I think I want to try other restaurants in the area. Maybe unless a friend request to come here. read more

The man who served was downright rude. When we were ordering he put in a roll that we didn't order and then it went downhill from there. He was shockingly aggressive towards us and ignored us after. He wasn't honest to the manager when he explained he made the mistake, we heard him from the restaurant. At the end we asked to speak to a manager and then we watched him go past the manager twice without letting her know we wanted to speak with her. We had to get up to give them the credit card because he ignored us. The poke salad was great, but everything else has imitation crab meat. The prices were way too high for the quality. I never post bad reviews but that was a really bad experience. Tip for the guy who was serving us: I normally tip 25-30%. You will make a lot note money if you treat your customers better. read more

Excellent food deserves 5 stars! Horrible Service deserves zero stars. Let me explain... The Good: We ordered calamari, three Special Rolls (Volcano, Cracker and Hirayu Haka), ramen and strawberry and mango mochi. The rolls were excellent and very filling. All around a very pleasant meal. The Bad: Waitress served our waters promptly, we thanked her. No acknowledgement. We sat for at least 20 minutes before she even acknowledged we were there again. I began to think we had to order up front. (She was busy serving two other tables so the restaurant was not full by any means). Finally she took our orders and brought over the Miso soup. When our calamari came she slammed the dish on the table knocking my husband's soup and therefore spilling some on the table. Didn't offer to clean or apologize or offer additional napkins. Served our rolls by slamming them down. Once we were nearly finished she asked us to hand her all the dishes while picking up the little pieces of paper (busing our own table before we're actually done). To this she said, "you guys are awesome' and even smiled! This was the first warm expression we experienced an hour into our experience. Next we ordered the mochi. She returned quickly and set the dishes in front of us. That's it... no spoons... just the mochi to which my daughter and I started eating it with our hands (gross I know but we didn't want it to melt). My husband waited for her to return to ask for a spoon. I jokingly said, "there's only one bite left." Waitress snickered and left. Did not come back with a spoon but with the check. This was a decent restaurant with our total bill coming out to $68. One would have expected some decent level of service but no. My husband is super laid back about everything but he even initially suggested no tip at all. We left leaving her a tip and wishing her a better night via a note on the receipt. Not sure if it's a staffing shortage so owners will hire anyone, or the waitress had a horrible night, but the service was embarrassing. The sushi is quality. Previous reviews mentioned bad service. There was only one server during the busy dinner rush but he did a great job handling at least 6 tables, way better than I did when I waited tables! I took one star off because they clearly do a lot of take out orders and people come and stand near the sushi bar waiting, right by some tables, and that area has constant noise from phones and some kind of alert system. The spider roll only had small portion of blue crab on the very end pieces. Leaving the middle 4 or 5 pieces with only artificial crab meat. Absolutely delicious rolls! The best part is, they're all priced fairly well, so it makes choosing a roll pretty hard because there's so many to try! Well, this was a horrible dinner tonight. Once again, Yelp failed. Grateful for a directory of places, but I honestly can't take the reviews to heart again. Where to start? The part where water wasn't served in the first 5 minutes we were seated, the part where I constantly had to wave down the waitress for every little thing, or the part where I felt we were treated like two children? ( I'm 24 btw, but I felt like the server didn't want to put any effort into serving us because we were young, or looked young in this case). Service was limited to her taking our orders and bringing our plates to the table. Never came back to ask how our meal was or refilled our drink. Mid way into our meal, my glass was empty and still, no waitress around (busy standing at the register doing nothing or waiting on the other tables, except ours). It wasn't busy at all and there were 2 other waitresses, so there was no excuse. Food took forever to come. The kicker was that I ordered 10-15 minutes before this couple came in, yet somehow their rolls were served before us.Plates came out inconsistently. Our server was particularly nice to the couple at the next table, asking how their meal was, and if there was anything else they wanted. She didn't do any of that for us. I honestly still wonder why. Anyway, bad service all around (blonde older female). Lastly, the food was gross. Never had such bad sushi before. It's quite comparable to the day old sushi in the refrigerated aisle at Safeway. Yup, that bad... Fish was not fresh. The spider roll I ordered had little to no soft shell crab. The entire roll was mostly filled with imitation crab. The "deep fried crab" had absolutely no meat. It wasn't even crunchy! It was like eating leftover fried shrimp, except there was no shrimp and you're just eating rubbery shells. GROSS. I couldn't finish my dinner. It also comes with very colorful tobiko (fish roe), so it's pretty. The Rock Star rocks with it's crunchy lobster bites. I also really enjoy the savory and creamy sauce that it's drizzled with. One friend I ate with tried all this seafood and sushi for the first time in his life and he just fell in love with it. Great first impression! Wonderful service too! The waitresses are polite and attentive. The couple who owns the restaurant are incredibly sweet and kind! I'd definitely come back! Excellent sushi. Some of the best I have had in the South Puget Sound. Wife got her usual Spicey Tuna Roll and California roll. Both were gone, which is unusual. She usually has several left over to take home. I had the Tiger Hako and Ichi Tolls, but both were excellent. Only negative is that the Coke machine was not working. This really is the place to come and get sushi. The general decor is amazing. It's not tacky or cheesy looking "asian-inspired". The dim lighting gives the whole room a cool and mellow yet classy sushi restaurant feel without feeling like you have to dress up. It really is a nice ambience. All the servers are very nice as well. They offer explanation if you're not sure of what a certain item is and there is even a smaller menu that has pictures of some of the items so you can see what may be coming out to your table. There is soooo much to choose from on the menu. As a vegetarian, often times you're limited in selection at a sushi restaurant but there are quite a few items to choose from for practically all tastes. They actually serve more than just sushi, so if you're having a night out with friends you can get yakisoba or rice or a main entrée other than sushi so you're not totally left out. I do wish they had a bento box with vegetarian items because I love the look & feel of a bento box. The quality of the ingredients is rediculously good as well as the general presentation and plating of the sushi on the different styles and sized of plates that come out to the table. Before your meal comes out, they serve complimentary miso soup to kind of cleanse the palate and get you prepared for the sushi. There are several drinks and sakes if you want to have an adult beverage or even just a soft drink with your meal. I ordered the regular avocado rolls (8 pieces) as opposed to the hand rolled ones. I also had the yasai maki (5 pieces) and the Green Land Roll (8 pieces). The yasai maki and Green Land were basically the same thing but with a different wrapper and maybe one of two vegetables were different. It was still good but as the Green Land Roll was more expensive, I would probably just opt to get the yasai maki. The avocado rolls were perfect. The avocado was perfectly ripe and the roll itself was tightly wrapped. The other two were not wrapped as tightly but they didn't fall apart until they were in my mouth. Everything was delicious. As we were getting up to leave, everyone and I mean everyone thanked us for coming (two of the servers, the guys rolling the sushi, the hostess, everybody) I will certainly be back, but would like to try Koibito first. read more

I have eaten here in the past but this visit the food was terrible. The chicken teriyaki was a rubber consistency and totally unfit to eat. It was like it was still frozen but it was warm. I questioned if it was even chicken. After that, I felt like the rest of my food might not be safe to eat if they are okay with serving that "chicken". This is close to my Dad's place in Olympia. He used to be a fan of any teriyaki place, but my family and I have started bringing him here. I love this place first of all because he does, second because of the excellent servers, and third, because of the food, which is always on point. My dad has a tough time getting around these days, and the servers always manage to find us a table not too far from the door, even if it means clearing and setting one up. And they are always so sweet, patient, and polite with my dad. My dad will almost always order a teriyaki dinner, while I tend to jump around the menu. I can recommend the sushi -- some of the rolls are nearly a meal in themselves -- the bentos, and the teriyaki. Because all those are so good, it has been difficult to try some of the other dishes, but I am going to try and explore a little -- I am sure that I will be happy with anything I order. I had a sunshine roll with super white tuna and hamachi nigiri. It was really fresh and yummy. The price was really quite realistic too! The presentation was beautiful and the atmosphere is tranquil. The lighting is elegantly dark and there is soft piano jazz playing in the background. Their house sake was very smooth. The whole experience was so inviting and almost therapeutic.
