If you want to spend tens of thousands of dollars on an attorney who shows up unprepared, visibly flustered, and drops the ball on basic evidence, this is the firm for you. Court appearances felt sloppy and disorganized, and at one point counsel even insulted the judge by rushing proceedings so she could "get home to her son for spring break." That alone should tell you everything. The billing practices feel shady and wildly overpriced for what amounts to very little actual work. Nearly $35,000 later, they managed to lose two motions and deliver a painfully poor litigation performance on what should have been a straightforward case. Go to school and become a lawyer kids because honestly the majority of them get paid very well for doing nothing. This firm and specifically my attorney Jason Ponder was trash. Lied about having knowledge of military couples divorcing and the specific laws that pertain to veterans. They started my case with a $3500 retainer in September of 2022. It's now July 2025 and I'm roughly $16k in the hole and still legally married. This guy has no backboned and cannot keep a paralegal on his staff to save his life. 4 or 5 different paralegals in 3 years. I paid a significant amount of money for what I expected to be expert representation in a high-conflict custody case. I was anxious leading up to the trial - my attorney didn't reach out to prepare me, leaving me feeling completely unprepared. Howard Ellzey was my attorney, upon reviewing the contract there's a section on there that says "Retainer Fees" make sure you clearly understand what this is saying, they are taking a extra $950 from you upon paying the 6k retainer fee. He words it in a way to be deceitful. He sat on my retainer for 14 days, I had two days left to reply to the petition or i would of defaulted on my case. Had i not called and left a voice mail for him on day 18 then who knows what would of happened. He made it seem in the consult he would be right on it. He then is not up front in emails and you wind up sending 5-12 messages back and forth to see what he really needs from you. He will charge for those as well. He will also charge for emails he clearly states in the bottom " I am not charging you for the time it took to reply to this email". I did bring these discrepancies and many others up with him and he told me they made no sense to him. He will also chalk it up as "more than usual amount of emails" but again, he sends unnecessary emails. Then tried to send me a new invoice for $1,700+ more because I brought these things up to him. This is what you call intimidation at its finest. He can be very condescending as well. After paying 10k to not even make it to mediation my mind is blown. Taking full advantage of a single mother of two in a time of distress. He will also sit on any paper work then make you feel rushed to redo all of it & send it over organized, because i guess the amount i paid didn't cover him organizing the paper work. not even two months on retainer and i still haven't made it to mediation why? because Howard refused to set a date with the opposing party. RUN DON'T WALK AWAY FROM THIS FIRM! The only thing they care about is your money. I hired them for a Contempt motion that was easily winnable. We had the evidence that after an IDO was served to his company he started making outrageous amounts of Federal income tax payments on his check, 401K deposits into various accounts, and split up his salary into the other check he gets for commissions. He was being paid 2x a month. One was for commissions and the other, we were told was his salary. The payroll person advised us on how to issue the IDO, then went and changed the way he is paid the minute IDO was served. The larger check for his commissions took out barely any Federal withholding while the smaller check took out the rest owed on a large commission check. For instance, the smaller check was for around $7,000.00 which they took out over $4500.00 in Federal taxes from. Then they deducted his new and improved 401K amounts. This is how they shorted me over $3,000.00 a month for four years before I could afford to go back to court for a new IDO and contempt. BTW he is now making almost double of what he did when we were divorced. Almost half a million a year. I spoke to Aiken the day after court when his attorney had not prepared anything or even looked at his checks. I fired her, but of course their separation agreement doesn't say that although I asked for it to be changed. I had explained she was a disaster in court. We spent my precious hour with the Judge instructing my so called attorney on the law. All she cared about was my Financial disclosure which she didn't even need. The Judge already told her previously my finances had nothing to do with this contempt. Yet two days before she was absolutely focused on getting my financial records. I finally said NO! She sent me an email that she won't be responsible in court He was in contempt not me. She wasted 7 months trying to serve my ex and charged me over $10,000.00 for doing so. The Judge told her it wasn't necessary to serve him because he is on the court record. Simply filing the motion for Contempt would have notified him. Week before hearing she kept hitting me for more money or she would not show up for hearing. He was in contempt also for a life insurance policy he was court ordered to retain and didn't. I wanted that in the Contempt. Without that policy in place if he died tomorrow I would be penniless. Aiken told me I had to sign another agreement and give another approximately $8,000.00. His reason was this is another issue. Evidently anything you ask them to do is another retainer agreement and more money. EACH THING! This was not disclosed to me at all. Also when I called their Manatee number I was unknowingly switched to St Petersburg FL. They advertise an office in Manatee county, but closed it years ago. The day she went to court she charged me $800.00 for the maybe 40 minute drive each way. Aiken told me that is how they charge just like all the other lawyers around. I have NEVER heard of this kind of billing. Every time they do anything like an email the Paralegal reads it, then sends to the Lawyer, then they talk about it and decide what to do basically. You are charged for every single step separately. That is insane! You should see my bills. I could go on but please believe me do NOT hire them for anything! Almost $20,000.00 for absolutely nothing. They have messed up my case and I got nothing except a continuance because she only asked for an hour hearing. She absolutely wasted that hour. We wasted $32,000 with this firm. We hired Ayo and Iken in December of 2021 to assist us in a child support re-evaluation and custody revision case with my husband's ex-wife. We found Ayo and Iken online and signed up for a phone consultation with one of their attorneys via their website. We were contacted by one of their attorneys. We sketched the details of our situation and asked if we had a case, which he thought we did. One of the biggest concerns we had was that we live in North Carolina, and this case will have to be handled in Florida, which is where Ayo and Iken practices law. We informed the attorney where my ex-wife lived, Walton County, Florida, and that did not appear to be an issue. Fast forward almost two years and $32,000 later. The day before we were set to go to trial in Walton County, our attorney fell ill and was deemed unable to return to practice law. We were informed by Ayo and Iken of this situation via email. They sent us a letter stating they had replacement attorneys to assign to all of the original attorney's cases, and that the firm would cover all of the costs to get the new attorney "up to speed" in the case. In this letter they also stated we could choose to go to another law firm if we didn't want to remain with Ayo and Iken. We had questions and wanted to speak to the new attorney that was assigned to our case before we committed either way. Two days later we received via email a copy of a motion to withdraw as our counsel that was filed with the court! This firm took $32,000 from us and backed out on us just before this was set to go to trial. Ayo and Iken advertise their services all over the state of Florida (myfloridalaw.com), but when it was going to cost them money from their own pocket, they suddenly did not have an attorney who was able to try a in Walton County. We were aware we were going to be paying for the rest of the trial and associated activities. We have since had to hire a new attorney to finish our case. We will be paying our new attorney to review two years of work that has been done up until this point in addition to any new work that he deems necessary to move forward with the case. Not only did we get zero resolution with Ayo and Iken on our case, but they also appear to have no empathy whatsoever. Thirty-two thousand dollars may not be a lot of money to the firm of Ayo and Iken, but it is a lot of money to us. My husband is a retired disabled Army veteran and I a medically retired law enforcement officer. We never expected to get all our money back as some of it was earned, but some of the money would have been helpful in paying the new attorney to finish a job that should have been the responsibility of Ayo and Iken. We paid the firm $5,000 less than one month before they dropped us, and we did not get a dime of that money back. The biggest point of contention for us is the blatant disregard for a commitment made to us. One of the partners called my husband and was so disingenuous and condescending that I could hear it when they were talking over the phone. I called this attorney, who told me I had a case and sent me the document to sign asking for a $7000 retainer. After I signed, I was told the first step was for me to take the required Florida State Parenting Class online which is required by law. I did it that first weekend. The class is designed to KEEP FAMILIES TOGETHER. That is what the State of Florida wants and pushes for, and remember, this is a REQUIRED BY LAW class. It also covers finances and other things. I also had to fill out a HUGE amount of financials that I was in no shape to complete, especially with tax time looming in just a few weeks. After listening to the parenting class, and thinking about all of the financials, I decided to put the whole thing on hold. I contacted the attorney to notify them. At this point, I had turned in nothing. The attorney had done ZERO work for me. Agree a few weeks, I contacted and said I was withdrawing. Again, they did ZERO WORK for me. I turned in nothing except the original contract. I didn't even give them a copy of my drivers license. When I asked for a refund of my retainer, I received no answer for weeks. Finally, I received an email readings from a paralegal that said they were returning $500 to me, but that in the small print I had initialed no refunds of retainer. It's straight up theft. They did zero work. The state makes you take parenting class to KEEP the family together, and then, God forbid you choose to STAY together, the attorney steals from you. So my story is a typical one, I separated from my husband and moved back home to start over. We agreed that our daughter would stay with him until the end of the school year so that her life would not be disrupted more than it was and I would have time to get a job and get stable. Once I got a bit more stable and realized he was going to continue to withhold her, I looked up information on starting the divorce process myself. He retaliated by filing for child support against me. That was when I called Ayo and Iken and met Howard Ellzey. Now what you need to know about Howard is that he is extremely focused. He is not there to listen to your sob story or hold your hand. He cares and he shows that by being brutally real with you. He will let you know up front what he hopes to accomplish and he will let you know what the possible negative outcomes could be, and then he gets to work. Now everything he says might not sound like a great idea (like when he told me to acquiesce to the petition for only supervised visitation with my daughter) but if you trust him he will explain his reasoning (as I was not getting visits anyway the point wasn't worth wasting time arguing.) and (in my case) the outcome will be in your best interests. Now this review is only 4 stars for one reason only: this firm is expensive. However, they are willing to work with you on this. They set up things like payment plans and allowed me to do a few things myself so that I would not be charged as much but I want to be honest so the price was a bit of a challenge at times. That being said, you 100% get what you pay for. My ex-husband got a lawyer as well and the 2 of them tried many dirty tricks but Mr. Ellzey stayed above it, stayed professional, and gave me great advice that kept my spirits up during the entire ordeal. The ending of a marriage is a horrible experience. Fighting with someone you used to love to have time with your child is even more so. Stay clear.. I would NOT recommend them to my worst enemy. Laura Naylor.... took my money knowing that I wasnt a FL resident for 6 months, which is against the law. and she knew it! She told me it would be fine, yet it wasn't! She also drew up papers that said nothing I asked of her to write. She charged me $7500 and asked for an additional $2500 to continue, yet all that had been done was the case was filed with the court and my husband was served papers., Then she proceeded to ask me for an additional $2500.. which is where I had to draw the line and fire her.. When I first called her, she assured me it would be between $5000 & $8000 for the entire uncontested divorce, yet it was already at $7500, and we had just begun, she stated two more astronomical charges would be mediation and the final court costs. if I had proceeded it probably would have ran up to near $50,000!!! In which I did all the leg work, finding every document, title, bank statements, back taxes, avg monthy bills, sold properties from prior years, vehicle titles and so much more she required I scan and email to them. And they charged me for every single one of them I sent them. I only spoke with Laura Naylor on the phone twice. She offered no apologies and no refunds once I fired her for lying and stealing from me. She also refused any correspondence after that. She charged for every correspondence,.. example: an email that said thank you or received. When questioned about an error on their part, I was charged again for them to fix it. There were 2 secretaries sending me the same info and asking for the same things and both were charging me.. It was absurd. I told her I'm asking for a fair, kind, 50/50 settlement, she said she's never heard of anyone ever asking for that. She wanted me to go for 90%of his assets. After I told her I didn't ask her to write all the lies and figures in the papers she served to my husband, she said Itll be worked out later, of course, at additional astronomical charges to me for her to rewrite. I also filed with the Florida bar against her for doing this, and she declined. So that's it.. how is that fair... I'm out $7500. And a boatload of grief, and now months later I'm still not divorced and the case in is limbo until I hire another lawyer to clean up her mess! I asked them for a copy of my case and there response was.. you still owe us an additional $1800 on top of the $7500 they already robbed me of !! Seriously? For what??? The bottom line is, no matter how they respond to this review,... she illegally filed, lied about the costs, did everything I asked her not to do, charged $400 an hour, had she done the right thing to begin with, none of this would have transpired. She was unfair, unkind and what she's done is illegal. Anyone resting this have an idea how I could recoup some of my money or any recourse I could take. I received the free consultation with Jeanna Vogel. I told her my issue, my case, and the result I was looking for. I only received generalized information and a quote for a $5000 retainer. I do not feel that she cared about me nor my case only that I pay a hefty retainer. I had initially set up the appointment for 12 which I had to reschedule for. The text reminder stated that as long as I called in at the appointment time that I can do a phone consult. The receptionist called me at 12 and I inquired about the phone consult. She then stated I would hv to pay $150 for the phone consult because my appointment was for the face to face consult EVEN THOUGH I told her what the text reminder stated. She did not stand by what the reminder clearly stated. She then stated that if I was 5 mins late that I would have to reschedule. So needless to say I rescheduled for later that day. I was only with the attorney for less than 10 minutes. All of which I had heard general information along with a hefty fee. I do NOT feel she sympathized with me nor the porposed case, nor do I feel she cared to hear what I had to say. She did not care that hiring an attorney is an investment. She did not show me that she cared for my business nor my money. The location was 30 mins to 1 hour from my residence and a phone consult would have been easier. She wasted my time AND my gas. I have been a client of Ayo and Iken in Tampa and my lawyers name was Crystal Phillips. My case has been over for almost a month and I can now give a fair assessment. Overall I was not happy with my services. Crystal was very sweet and appeared to be very nice, and every time I encountered her she was nice. The cons were enough to make me write this review. I made a payment and for whatever reason the payment didn't go through. When the office manager Michelle spoke to me she was very accusatory and rude. She insinuated that I did not have the money to pay for it. When I called my bank to speak to Michelle from USAA (2 different people) she still was accusatory. When it was realized that the issue was with Ayo and Iken....Michelle's DID NOT apologize to me at all and changed her tone. When I spoke to Crystal, she said Michelle was a nice person. I tried to ask for Michelle's manager and was told she did not have one. I kept my composure because I had a case to fight, but UNACCEPTABLE. I always had to remind Crystal about the details of my case. When we had mediation, the mediator told the opposing council something that we asked him not to until the end and Crystal did not address it. She was very passive even though she stated in the consultation that she was an aggressive attorney. I could have fought for myself better and just had the office do the paperwork only. Crystal did give me options on making payments, so that was a pro even though I am currently looking over the numbers to add it up because it seemed fishy. Towards the end it seemed that she was unnecessarily adding more fees at an inflated rate. Crystal spent 3000.00 in less that a month, and I did not see the fruits of her labor from the thousands that I spent. My case has been over since June 2. There was some information that I needed in regards to child support and she gave it to me after asking and that is usually how it worked. It was information that I should have received without asking. I had to ask to get. Also, I asked to be informed of when I was running low in my trust account and she NEVER did that. She would wait until I owed 600 plus and then let me know and I would find myself scrambling to get the money because of her negligence to multi task. I would not recommend Crystal Phillips as a lawyer and I think Michelle is unprofessional and she treated me and the USAA agent (we are both black women) with such distaste and disrespect.
