So the pictures of this beautiful, bright, fresh looking food is what drew me to this place and when I got my food it looked beautiful just like it was out of a food magazine! A clear description would be beautiful, mouth watering, and/or picturesque! But that's where the amazement stopped. The place was completely empty that day except for the ladies behind the counter. I looked over the menu. Went with pollo(chicken) tacos and then carnitas (pork) quesadillas just in case the tacos weren't enough. Well I went in for my first bite and it was filled with disappointment. Dry, overcooked (maybe old) chicken. The pico de gallo was nice, but it wasn't enough to help hydrate this dry crusty chicken. I stilled had hope for the quesadillas but already being a little leery, I inspected it first and eeeewwww sour cream. Nowhere on the wall menu description did it mention sour cream. So I gave them away to a client of mine. She said they weren't good. She did manage to find some sour cream free pork to let me taste and one word comes to mind... DRY. this was just as bad as the chicken. It actually reminded me of old food at a buffet that nobody eats and so it sits around where the sides become dry, crusty, and overcooked... I wanted to like this place. It is convenient for me when I'm in the area and the prices are pretty low. But for the quality of food I recieved, it was a waste of my money. read more

I've been looking for good, authentic Mexican food in Connecticut for years, and finally fate brought me to Aztec. (Ok, it was actually Yelp. Is that fate?) The only menu is mounted above the counter where you order. I was immediately drawn to the beef tongue tacos; four are served with a few chips, Pico, limes, and salsa verde ($6). They were delicious! The salsa verde is clutch. The amount you get for the price makes everything taste even better. There's two small aisles worth of Mexican snacks (all packaged stuff) plus some items behind a glass window under the counter. Enough seats for about 20. At around 4pm on a weekend, there were three other solo eaters. I look forward to coming back and getting more items on the menu. read more

Very impressed with the food! The restaurant could use some updating for sure (very run down, ripped seats etc) but the Mexican food is really great and fresh, affordable too. Very minimal groceries for a grocery store (just a few items). This place is great for a quick bite or a grab and go, the carnitas tacos are great and so are the burritos, I think they make their own tortilla chips. Yum! Also love the pico de gallo. Great chorizo and al pastor. The carne asada was OK but a generous dollop of salsa made it much better. The horchata was great, the service was friendly. This is a place where $5 can make you stupid happy and change your perspective on the whole day. I love Mexican. read more

A place so good that I had to write a review the same day, even though I was torn about writing a review (more reviews can lead to more people visiting a place which can lead to tiny gems like this getting discovered by a larger crowd which can lead to me having to wait in lines...and on and on....) Anyway - this place is amazing. Weekday almost 6pm and no one was there except me. Granted, this place is totally unassuming. But it's an absolute hidden gem and I'm so glad I stumbled upon it via Yelp! I went for the carnitas tacos - you get 4 of any taco, and they come with chips and pico de gallo for a grand total of $6. Amazing! Reminded me so much of tacos you'd get from a really great taco truck or taqueria in Queens (basically the east coast golden standard). They're small with double corn tortillas, and dressed simply with the meat of your choice, cilantro, onion, and lime wedges on the side. I utilized the bottles of green sauce and hot sauce that were brought to me to add a little extra flavor, though the tacos really hold their own...I just like my heat! We make it a point to always have Jarritos sodas that you pop open on the wall old style. Yes the place is not In The best condition( ripped seats some times there's food on the floor from previous customers it might even be grungie at times) but that all adds character and on occasion if you show up before they close they have run out of things ( at this moment they have run out of the steak for the night but again it's 1/2 hour before close) but they still will substitute they run out of guacamole they have no problem giving you sliced avocado but the 2 people that run it do a spectacular job at cooking. The best tacos I've had in CT, with the caveat that I've only stopped by one or two of the trucks on Long Wharf Pier. We moved out here last year from Chicago, and I was searching for legit al pastor for a while. This place does the trick - the steak, chicken, and carne enchilada are all great as well. Fresh chips and pico de gallo come with most of the meals you can get here. This is an unassuming little grocery store that doubles as an authentic Mexican taqueria. There is nothing flashy in the decor in any fashion. The small eat-in area is comprised of just a few tables with repaired old red-leather booths. In other words, you wouldn't eat here for the ambience. But remember: you can't eat atmosphere. The food excellent. My wife and I got takeout and walked away with two burritos (each with an unexpected side of rice and beans) and fresh fried corn tortilla chips and authentic pico de gallo (both large for side orders) for $21.00 in total. One burrito had roasted pork, red sauce, onions, cilantro, and pineapple while the other was a California burrito with steak, guacamole, sour cream, and French fries. Amazing. They also came with sides of green and red sauces, both of which were fresh, flavorful, and super spicy. The woman preparing the food was kind and the place was clean. Can't beat it for the quality of food and the price. We didn't even order off of their delicious taco menu, so we will definitely go back. Nothing uppity or pretentious here. I came here with my mother. It wasn't too busy and it was around noon time. I had a carne asada burrito and it was.... DELICIOUS. also with the burrito comes some rice which was soft melt in your mouth and savory. The best part were the refried beans which were true authentic refried beans.
