Cool ambiance and friendly service but not the best tacos I have ever had. The al pastor was excellent - the flavors melded together perfectly...but this was dampened significantly by the chicken taco. The chicken was basically char and nothing else which overpowered any other flavors there. I couldn't finish it! I wish I had gotten the asada which was my initial thought. I'll come back to try the asada but will avoid the chicken like the plague.

Walking around new haven looking fo a place to eat lunch, walked by here, they were empty, so decided to give them a try. I'm like tacos are in my budget for lunch. Asked for a menu, the guy pointed to items printed on the wall. I love a short menu. Yes it's not the biggest variety, but what they do have is usually done well. I chose a birria taco, and a nopal quesadilla (with a sprite.) I was agasp with the price $22. There were no visible prices listed. Wasn't sure what each item cost, Later I find out 1 taco is $6. Get my food, and Visually I wasn't impressed for $22. I was expecting to be blown away with the taste, and i wasnt. This was my first experience with Birria and the way other ppl rave about it, to me it was okay. Taco was stuffed with meat, but the juices made the bottom very soft so it was difficult to pick up the taco to eat. I kinda had the same issue with the quesadilla. The moisture, heat, and weight of the filling made the bottom tortilla very soft. I enjoyed the quesadilla more than the taco but neither one really blew me away with flavor. Wanted to try more so I had Planned to go back (since tacos i heard there was a taco special on Tuesday) just never made any real effort to return

As a lover of street tacos, I've had this spot on my list for a bit. The asada taco was juicy and made for the perfect bite with the traditional onion and cilantro topping. I got the chance to see the al pastor at the beginning of its cook on the vertical spit. The meat seasoning was unique compared to other al pastor I've had but enjoyed the flavor. Overall, the portion of meat was very generous and worth the price you pay. The service is quick counter service with a few tables inside the colorful interior. If you're in the mood for flavorful street tacos, definitely give this spot a try.

Salt, salt, salt.... So sad as I am a superfan of spit roast al pastor. They make their own tortillas too, but after the first bite it was just salt on the pallet. We each had 2 al pastor tacos, and shared a carne asada and a bierra. The bierra was a mess. Pretty sure the gravy/consume is supposed to be ln the side? Had a hibiscus agua fresca that was good We both felt ill after for several hours. You could hurt someone with the salt level with high blood pressure and heart problems. Staff was nice, but why so salty? Price was expensive for the amount of food and especially the horrendous amount of salt. I mean everything besides the drink was completely destroyed with salt levels. I'm sad I thought I'd found the spit roast al pastor of my dreams, once again. We lived in Albuquerque a year and it's hard to find anything close in the Northeast.

Best Tacos outside of California! Delicious flavors, and the absolute best Al pastor there is! Handmade tortillas! Went in around 1 on a Saturday- delicious margaritas and absolutely no wait!

Tacos Los Gordos has been in my list of New Haven taco places to try for a while now. My friend and I met up here for Taco Tuesday and left feeling full and content! The tacos are on the pricier end for a small taco and they have other items in the menu such as burritos. My friend and I were told that the steak and Birria tacos are some of the most popular tacos on the menu, so naturally, we had to give them a try. I absolutely loved the steak taco. The meat was succulent, juicy and flavorful and the toppings complimented each other well. The Birria taco had a great flavor but sadly was a little too salty for me. Not sure if I caught them on a bad day and may consider giving the Birria another try in the future. The restaurant itself is a little small but they have seating available for people who want to dine in. Overall solid place for Taco Tuesday... or taco any day

Greasiest $9 taco I've ever had. Not worth it. The other eggplant taco I got was super salty, like overwhelmingly. Staff was less than helpful and said that's how they are. Disappointed because I've had a good meal before, but will never go back after this time.

Let me start off by saying I've been here before and it was great. This time I got the worst service I've ever gotten and the food was terrible. Tacos were full of grease and the burrito was a mess. I asked for them to remake it but the employee said it was fine. Then refused to give me a refund. Pretty sad how bad it was.I forgot to add this was $65!!!

Small spot for tacos in downtown New Haven. Tacos are always made fresh in front of you, you can see them making the tortillas- so expect a bit of a wait (maybe 20 min). They are a bit on the spicy side. Our favorites are the birria tacos, they have the most filling.

Such a fantastic and hidden gem in New Haven. We stumbled upon this place by accident while searching for a quick takeout place and I'm so happy we found Tacos Los Gordos. We were a little apprehensive given the price (~$6 for a single taco) but ordered some tacos and a burrito ($18) to share. Service was quick, efficient and authentic and they made everything to order. The steak in our tacos was grilled, then cut and seasoned and had the perfect level of crispiness and tenderness that really paired well with the pineapple. When you consider that a burrito at a place like Chipotle will cost you about the same (when you include guacamole which is included here) then $18 doesn't sound too unreasonable. Highly recommend checking this place out if you're in the area! There's usually some street parking nearby although note that the bathrooms were closed when we visited.

When a New Haven restaurant industry pro and a trusted Foodie Friend both recommend Tacos Los Gordos in the same week, I do some research. When Tacos Los Gordos ("TLG") appears as my number 1 search result for "Tacos" in "New Haven" in Yelp, I fast track it up my Try List. My schedule allowed for a quick early visit on a Sunday morning. I actually was able to enter before their stated 11 am opening time because I noticed other customers inside. I was very impressed with TLG. TLG is located in downtown New Haven on Orange Street behind the federal courthouse. As a thought exercise, try to think of a great brick and mortar taqueria in the heart of a downtown area. You don't see them very frequently because tacos are meant to be an affordable and accessible food, and rent is high in cities. So as a necessity, TLG is charging more for tacos than some of my favorite food trucks or non-city brick and mortars. TLG's tacos are also more substantial and high end than the tacos at most places. The inside is like an artistic and stylized tribute to a Taco shack. An antique looking Cooler full of Mexican Cokes. Ribbed Metal ceiling and walls. Distressed wood. The most artistic and highest end inside taco shack you may ever eat at. I ordered an asada taco, a pastor taco and elote. TLG has an open kitchen.. I saw flames when they were cooking my asada. Saw smoke from the grill. A vertical spit of meat that wasn't spinning yet, because I was early. It's always a good sign to see a spit like that. My food was picture perfect. The elote looked like it does in my mind. Cheesy. Creamy. Spice Dusted. Cilantro-dotted. Limes. Great execution. I suspect it would be better during corn season, but I don't see how you could do better in February. The tacos were packed with meat, salsa verde, salsa roja, onions and cilantro. The pastor also had big pineapple pieces. The tortillas were first rate. The pastor was very good, but perhaps a touch too seasoned for me. The asada was basically perfect. Tender and good charred. If I had added the salsa myself, I would have added less. They were very good, but the flavor in that quantity overpowered the meat a bit. Visually spectacular though. If one made a CT Taco Trail, Tacos Los Gordos would definitely be on it. And given its location and style, TLG would be one of the more unique stops. 4.5 Stars

It was close to 11 PM on a Wednesday, and after trying multiple spots that claimed their kitchens were open until midnight (Google lied ), VivaZ came through. We were greeted right away and seated quickly. Our server was patient, knowledgeable, and very considerate of food preferences at the table -- huge plus there, especially that late at night. Food I ordered the chicken empanadas -- they were big, filled with chicken and cheese, tasty but a little too oily for my preference. I'd love a drier, crispier shell, but I'd still try them again. My brother ordered the shrimp nachos and those were excellent -- loaded, flavorful, and honestly better than the empanadas in my opinion. My cousin got the same nachos and loved them too. A friend ordered the short rib empanadillas and didn't enjoy them. He sent them back and swapped for chicken, which he liked much more. Appreciate that the staff had no issue making the change. Drinks I had an Ilegal Mezcal shot -- my go-to when I'm at a Mexican spot -- and it hit like it always does. My brother's strawberry margarita was also a winner. Overall Friendly service, good food, great energy even late on a weekday. The fact that they were open and accommodating when nothing else was is major. Would we return? Absolutely. Rating: 4.5/5
