I have never seen three people work harder than in this kitchen on Cinco de Mayo. Thankfully, I put in my order about 10 minutes after they reopened at 5 PM. Minutes later, chaos ensued, and there was a line of about 20 people that never went away. They make the tortillas from scratch, I watched a woman in the kitchen, piecing off the dough and then flattening them in a press, and then putting them on the grill, over and over and over again. By the way, their tortilla chips are made of this same homemade goodness. I can see why there was a line out the door until I finished my meal. The tacos I ordered were perfectly seasoned, very tender, and incredibly juicy. I don't think I've ever had tacos like that before. I only tried a couple Tuesdays and the tacos are *tiny!* My friend says other days they're normal sized, but this is horrible marketing because I have no desire to go back on other days to find out. As a lover of street tacos, I've had this spot on my list for a bit. The asada taco was juicy and made for the perfect bite with the traditional onion and cilantro topping. I got the chance to see the al pastor at the beginning of its cook on the vertical spit. The meat seasoning was unique compared to other al pastor I've had but enjoyed the flavor. Salt, salt, salt.... So sad as I am a superfan of spit roast al pastor. They make their own tortillas too, but after the first bite it was just salt on the pallet. Had a hibiscus agua fresca that was good We both felt ill after for several hours. You could hurt someone with the salt level with high blood pressure and heart problems. Tacos Los Gordos has been in my list of New Haven taco places to try for a while now. My friend and I met up here for Taco Tuesday and left feeling full and content! The tacos are on the pricier end for a small taco and they have other items in the menu such as burritos. My friend and I were told that the steak and Birria tacos are some of the most popular tacos on the menu, so naturally, we had to give them a try. I absolutely loved the steak taco. The meat was succulent, juicy and flavorful and the toppings complimented each other well. The Birria taco had a great flavor but sadly was a little too salty for me. Not sure if I caught them on a bad day and may consider giving the Birria another try in the future. Such a fantastic and hidden gem in New Haven. We stumbled upon this place by accident while searching for a quick takeout place and I'm so happy we found Tacos Los Gordos. We were a little apprehensive given the price (~$6 for a single taco) but ordered some tacos and a burrito ($18) to share. Service was quick, efficient and authentic and they made everything to order. The steak in our tacos was grilled, then cut and seasoned and had the perfect level of crispiness and tenderness that really paired well with the pineapple. When you consider that a burrito at a place like Chipotle will cost you about the same (when you include guacamole which is included here) then $18 doesn't sound too unreasonable. When a New Haven restaurant industry pro and a trusted Foodie Friend both recommend Tacos Los Gordos in the same week, I do some research. When Tacos Los Gordos ("TLG") appears as my number 1 search result for "Tacos" in "New Haven" in Yelp, I fast track it up my Try List. My schedule allowed for a quick early visit on a Sunday morning. I actually was able to enter before their stated 11 am opening time because I noticed other customers inside. I was very impressed with TLG. TLG is located in downtown New Haven on Orange Street behind the federal courthouse. As a thought exercise, try to think of a great brick and mortar taqueria in the heart of a downtown area. You don't see them very frequently because tacos are meant to be an affordable and accessible food, and rent is high in cities. So as a necessity, TLG is charging more for tacos than some of my favorite food trucks or non-city brick and mortars. TLG's tacos are also more substantial and high end than the tacos at most places. The inside is like an artistic and stylized tribute to a Taco shack. An antique looking Cooler full of Mexican Cokes. Ribbed Metal ceiling and walls. Distressed wood. The most artistic and highest end inside taco shack you may ever eat at. I ordered an asada taco, a pastor taco and elote. TLG has an open kitchen.. I saw flames when they were cooking my asada. Saw smoke from the grill. A vertical spit of meat that wasn't spinning yet, because I was early. It's always a good sign to see a spit like that. My food was picture perfect. The elote looked like it does in my mind. Cheesy. Creamy. Spice Dusted. Cilantro-dotted. Limes. Great execution. I suspect it would be better during corn season, but I don't see how you could do better in February. The tacos were packed with meat, salsa verde, salsa roja, onions and cilantro. The pastor also had big pineapple pieces. The tortillas were first rate. The pastor was very good, but perhaps a touch too seasoned for me. The asada was basically perfect. Tender and good charred. If I had added the salsa myself, I would have added less. They were very good, but the flavor in that quantity overpowered the meat a bit. Visually spectacular though. If one made a CT Taco Trail, Tacos Los Gordos would definitely be on it. And given its location and style, TLG would be one of the more unique stops. 4.5 Stars read more

Setting the scene: When we realized we couldn't get apizza and still make our train at State Street Station, we needed to pivot. I see a taqueria right by the station, I say "let's give it a shot." I walk in and see one of the chefs working a tortilla press and immediately know we hit the jackpot. This place is great. Reminds me of Mexico - sensible portion sizes, but rich ingredients. The same plastic plates, though these ones aren't covered with plastic bags. We got 3 of the mulitas - chicken, carnitas, and al pastor. All 3 were fantastic. Made it back to the station with time to spare and enjoyed them in the cafe car with a topo chico. You are paying for this quality, however. With 3 mulitas and 2 drinks our bill came to $50 or so plus tip. But I'd rather shell out for great tacos - you're not getting precios mexicanos with la renta de New Haven. So if you're a starving grad student trying to stretch a PhD stipend, you're not going to go here every day. But the quality is great and I would definitely go here again. These nopal tacos don't mess around! Grilled to perfection with a delicious sauce that makes them taste like a meaty taco, all on top of a homemade corn tortilla. I love a thoughtful vegetarian taco and this was one of my favorite takes on a nopal taco I've had. Small storefront a few blocks off the more bustling part of downtown. They only have a few tables. It was quick and easy to get in and get my tacos and the people working were nice. The small indoors had a cute aesthetic that felt modern but welcoming. Loved the music too. Only complaint is that I wish the nopal tacos were served with chips or something. They're not very filling, and at $12 for two tacos, I'd like to not need a snack after. Tacos Los Gordos has filled a huge void in New Haven - at long last! The tacos are similar in style to Los Tacos No. 1 in New York, but a little homey-er and heftier. My go-to is the al pastor (adobada) taco, but recently they've been rolling out a lot more menu items that I need to go back and try (tortas, chilaquiles, posole). The only thing you will receive at "Tacos los Gordos" is terrible customer service and low quality food that doesn't match the price. As much as this place was hyped, the entire establishment is inferior to most restaurants in the area. I love tacos & trying new restaurants so I held zero reservations when ordering 9 tacos and 2 esquites apparently worth $100. I waited an hour for the food but that's okay, good food is worth it. Except when I take the first bite of my Ribeye Taco ($9) it's cold. Not lukewarm, but cold. Try the carnitas, cold. Try the asada, cold. So I go and speak to the man who took my order and let him know my food is cold. He tells me that that's not right and I suggest he takes the food back to see for himself, he refuses. Then goes off to say, "hes not going to refund me". I told him I wasn't looking for a refund, but something needs to be made right here. He says there's nothing he can do about it. So I spend an hour waiting on food and $100 on low quality ill prepared food. I then go ask for his name, he states it "Frank". Those who are not in the wrong, have no reason to lie, right? So I then ask for another copy of my receipt. Turns out his name is Edgar! Why lie, Edgar? All this to say, save your time, energy, and money. Do not eat at "Tacos Los Gordos". Finally New Haven, specifically the downtown area, gets a taco place with REAL tacos!!!!! These are some hefty juicy tacos, so if you're use to having to order 3 or 4.... Start with just two because they are filling. Not only are they filling but they are high quality and super flavorful! Everything is fresh, down to the tortillas! The agua frescas are delicious as well, I love how they aren't super sweet! So is the guac and chips :) The guys in there are super friendly, if you're curious on one of their agua frescas or salsas ask to have a taste. I tried their spicy salsa and it was pretty good, it also didn't burn . The tacos prices might seem high but remember these are hefty, filling, high quality, authentic tacos you are paying for.
