B & D Guitar (Billy) is truly one of the best. I make my living with my guitars, so they are always being hauled from gig to gig and played for hours upon hours. The first thing I do when I purchase a new guitar is, take it to Billy. Billy is honest right from the start. There have been times I have had to send brand new guitars back in exchange for another. Do to poor craftsmanship or poor storage and handling. Billy recognizes the defects that I don't see, which in turn saves me time and money. Let's face it, a lot of guitars are made overseas, or in assembly lines and wood is a constantly changing thing. I once accidentally knocked over my most valuable guitar, (the guitar that belonged to my Dad.) It broke the headstock and broke my heart. I took it to Billy and he repaired it where you cannot tell it ever happened. The only complaint I have with Billy is, he is extremely busy. He will make time for emergencies whenever possible but don't expect to be pushed ahead of the line just to make you happy. Think of it this way, the best restaurants in town are always busy and require a waiting period or a reservation ahead of time. You can expect this from B & D as well. When someone is this good they are going to be busy. Once again, I absolutely love the work Billy does and I refer him to all of my friends. I am not sure why so many people give this guy a high rating at all. I tried to use his services twice. The first time was to setup a Fender Jazz bass I had bought used. The neck was fine but I needed help setting it up right, which can be a pain on bass. Being a guitar guy (until then) I had no idea how to set up a bass. Immediately he gave a look down the neck and claimed there was a "loop up" and that he could fix it basically for what I paid for the bass. I declined and had a different luthier set it up and it was fine. Looking down the neck I could see there was a bit of a misalignment of the 4th and 5th frets, but barely. It is almost impossible for it to be perfect except with pricey boutique builds. It never was an issue when playing and, if there ever was an issue, it would be gone now due to usage. FYI: I have gigged this bass for 10 years and it still could be played 10 more. So years later I decided to give him a second chance, because I had met several guitar players who were adamant that B&D is the best in the valley. I took a BRAND NEW Lakland 5-string bass for him to set up. He looked at the neck and, again, said there was a "loop up" and claimed he would fix it for the same fee. Fixing meant pulling out all the frets, sanding the neck and then refretting. On a new bass!!!!! I declined, again. I went home, pulled a few YouTube videos, bought the tools and learned to set up my own bass guitars. Years later, some guy had an overpriced Fender Jazz Bass 62 RI for sale on Craigslist. He claimed that he had some good work done on the neck. On the phone he told me that the same exact luthier had fixed the "loop up" on the neck and that's why he was selling it with a premium. I asked him what a "loop up" is and he had no clue. He basically swallowed it line and sinker and gave his hard earned money to fix whatever a "loop up" is. OH here is the thing: I had called Lakland about the "loop up". A kind British gentleman used some very choice words, some I had never heard, to explain what he thought about the luthier. read more

I will preface this by stating I'm a drummer, and know little to nothing about guitars. That said, I've had a Fender Strat for over 10 years now, which I randomly play in my room when I feel like pretending to be a rock star. Never changed the strings, never had any work done to it, and it needed both badly. I mentioned to one of my guitarist friends that I felt it was in need of some maintenance, as I was planning on doing some home recording. He lit up and said "I have the perfect guy!". Enter Billy @ B & D. The first thing I did was email Billy, giving him an idea of my situation. He wrote back within a day and simply told me to give him a call when I had a few minutes to chat, so he could better help me. I did, and he was super easy to talk to. Based on the tuning I play in, he recommended the strings I should buy, and told me to bring them with the guitar. Easy peasy. I arrived on a Saturday morning in mid August, and found a few other people were there waiting to speak with Billy. He was helping a woman & her husband, so I got to talking with a few of the other customers. They were all repeat visitors, and when I told them of my situation, they assured me I was in good hands. When it was my turn, I plopped my guitar down on the counter, admitted I knew nothing about the instrument sitting before me, and told him I needed him to make it sound good again. I reminded him of our phone conversation, and showed him the strings I had bought. He did some quick measurements, and noted that my guitar definitely needed some TLC, but it wouldn't cost me an arm & a leg. Then he requested to watch me play a little bit so he could get an idea of how I personally play. Well, damn, put me on the spot, hahaha. I (attempt to) play a few licks, and that's all he needs to see. He writes up a ticket and gives me a copy. This is where things get interesting... to paraphrase, he says, "Your day is November 4th. I want you to call this number. I won't be here, so you're going to leave a message. Give me your name & the info on this ticket. If you don't, I won't know to work on your guitar, and it will just sit here." My friend had prepped me about this odd arrangement, so I was already kinda familiar with how it worked. Since it was August, Billy didn't want me to leave my guitar with him, because he felt bad that I wouldn't have anything to play for the next couple months when I felt like being a rock star. So I took it home with me. I brought it back November 3rd with the strings, reminded him who I was, and he made a couple quick notes. He reminded me that I needed to call him, and I told him I had set an alarm on my phone so I wouldn't forget! The next day, I called, gave him my info, and a few days later, I get a call back. He tells me he's working on it, and wanted to know if I wanted some blah blah guitar language blah blah done to it. I told him I had no idea what he was talking about, so he took the time to explain it to me. Before we hung up, he said it would be "ready tomorrow." Tomorrow?! Wow, I didn't expect it so soon. Works for me! So I ventured back over there a few hours ago, showed him my ticket, and he hands me the guitar. He says "you don't pay until you play", and walks me into a side room to plug it into an amp so that I have the opportunity to make sure everything is just right. Wow. Just. Wow. Plays like butter. I actually... sound... good? He leaves the room and tells me to play for a bit on my own just to make sure I'm happy. So I played about a minute of random original material, and I've never felt like more of a rock star (well, as a guitarist, at least) in my life. Felt great, played great, I'm happy. So I walked out to the lobby area and he explained everything he did so I was aware. He then tells me if I have any issues now or in the future, he would take care of me. I pay, we chit chat, shake hands, and I've had a big smile on my face ever since. To say I'm excited is an understatement. Let the home recording begin! Thanks Billy!!! read more

I was very hesitant due to that fact that it's a 55 year old guitar, but he assured me that he would make it perfect, and he did! I took a guitar in to Billy on a recommendation from a friend. Billy is the first Luthier I've ever spoken with who didn't look down on me because I'm not as good a player as he is. I've found Billy three years ago through a friend of mine after having an off-putting experience with a re-fret on one of my guitars. He said take it to this guy. I did, and I owe my friend many thanks! I took an acoustic to Billy to setup...just to try him out. Since, he has done all sorts of work for me from basic setups to entire re-frets. Went there once and now I'll never go anywhere else. Phenomenal personalized service. Billy was the first guitar repair guy who really sat down and took the time with me to figure out what I wanted and needed rather than just giving me a "standard set up". Took him my '62 reissue Telecaster. He watched me play, asked me how I generally play (capo or not) and what my concerns were. Along with the standard setup, he convinced me to move to a heavier gauge string, lowered the action and tweaked the bridge to give me more consistent tuning up the neck. Great stuff. Took him my Rickenbacker for similar love and he showed me that it really needed a fretboard rebuild. When I told him that I was worried that I might devalue it if I ever chose to sell it, he worked out a plan to make the best of it while retaining all the original parts. Billy is about the most knowledgeable person on guitar repair that I have ever met. I'm not a professional, but have been playing mostly acoustics for 30+ years. The first guitar I brought in was a 12 string guild that required fabrication of a new bridge, reglueing of the saddle, and a setup. II was honestly shocked at the results - now I remember why I bought this 30 years ago! It sounded & played better than it did new. Since then, Billy has worked on (and done a fantastic job) on a martin (cracked top due to lifting pick guard) another Guild that had a large crack in the top, and just recently took a hump out of the fretboard of another acoustic (had to plane the fretboard) that was so bad it was actually fretting the incorrect note (play 10th fret on first string - and actually fretted at the 12th...) Billy loves to chat - & will make sure you understand all options and ensure you've got the right fix. You absolutely do not need to troubleshoot your own guitar - just tell Billy what your issue is, (dead sounding notes, buzzes, hard fretting...) He will look over your guitar tell you how it can be made better. I can highly recommend B&D for all your guitar issues.
