As the mother of a musician, I've learned far more about instruments and accessories than I ever knew before. I still may not be able to identify everything, but I'm getting better. While I was in town visiting my son, he mentioned that there was a music store not far from us that he'd like to visit. I wasn't prepared for the size of this place-it's far more than just a "music store." He had a gleeful look of awe as he admired the selection of brass instruments and was able to play a few of them too. He'll be ready to make a purchase soon, so he wants to know for sure which one is just right. If you don't quite know what you're looking for, or need some elevated service, you might find someone, you might not. It's a more laid-back approach to customer service-we had to seek someone out for help. But I suppose I prefer that over an in-your-face sales person trying to close a deal. read more

String and keys player here, and they have plentiful amounts of both. Guitars are largely in the Fender and Gibson realm; a huge variety of them, but limited other selections and not so many alternate brands. They try to do much in a limited space, and mostly, that works. Their wind and violin/viola/cello/bass/etc space is really nice, and their acoustical guitar and bass sections are strong. The keyboards area is sort of scrunched together but top brands and a bit of variety. I liked their synths, although not a crazy variety. Prices I heard seemed a bit higher, but there is added value here, too. Huge sheet music section. Much wind instrument variety, as well as mouthpieces, reeds/ligatures/etc. It has the widest and broadest inventory I've seen in Arizona. Worth a visit; musicians will appreciate the variety. read more

In Masa for a visit and found myself downtown. Wandering into Malano's for no good reason. Was asked if I could use some help by an older gentleman (like me). Had a great conversation with him about harmonicas which I sort of messed with years ago. Super knowledgeable and interesting this man is. This place is a dream store for anyone that loves music. The voice lesson booths upstairs and sheet music catalogs were filled with people. Down stairs there is a robust repair department with many experts fine tuning instruments. There were experts helping people choose equipment and instruments. This is the coolest music store I've ever been to! I had an hour or two to burn, and I accomplished my mission. The sheer amount of instruments Milano's has, is incredible. I spent the first hour in the percussion section. They have everything...acoustic, electric, brass horns, accordions, guitars, keyboards, djembes, fiddles, upright basses, whistles, harmonicas, ukuleles, drums, cymbals. Poor workmanship and experience at the repair shop. Paid $550 to have my pro clarinet overhauled. Upon receiving, the key rings are way too elevated (should be .5mm) and Milano's couldn't be bothered to even clean off all the polishing compound (pic showing just a few examples of the issues). While I could have left the horn so they could have corrected these problems, I live too far away and it should have been done correctly to begin with. read more

I've been shopping at Milano Music for decades. This is an Arizona institution, carrying so many varieties of music related items as well as offering instrument rentals and lessons. I used to buy music books and sheet music here, as well as violin accessories. My most recent visit was to browse for electric guitars. The gentleman helping was so helpful and informative. He also teaches guitar lessons so he's one cool guy! The prices here were comparable to what you'd find online. Ditch those giant chains and come here instead! read more

I'm a 61 yr old guitarist and a month ago, decided to finally buy a high end acoustic guitar. I left 3 hours later with a Taylor guitar. The staff (I think his name was Fred) there were very patient and informative. I almost selected a guitar that I would have regretted. Fred played the guitar for me and I immediately understood why it was not as good as the Taylor. I bought an incredible Fishman Loudbox Micro as well, which packs a nice 40w punch that almost weighs nothing. I went back today and bought a song book I could use for my students that I teach. This place is FANTASTIC! Really, even if you're not shopping for anything it would be a great date or field trip. We went to get drum gear. Matt knows everything! He is patient with kids- even energetic kids bouncing around overwhelmed with all the awesome drum stuff. He listens to what you need and makes suggestions. Doesn't trick you with equipment that's more expensive. He is not pushy with his opinion but waited to share until we asked. We will never buy online again. Milano's is worth the drive. Like with most places, these days, customer service is really slipping. If you find yourself in the orchestra section, don't you dare ask a question regarding guitars! It's like they'll be offended. Then again, one of the employees around the keyboards went out of his way to help. So it just depends on who you run across, you might find that you get some great service in the end Positive note: this is a rare experience. A family owned company with a 2-story building in a ton of history. You can get anything you need here for a vast array of prices. I've been going to Milano since the late 90s. I usually love it there. And I always get what I need. And when I take my kids, they usually have the time of their lives! There's just so much to see, and it doesn't have the Corporate # guitar center vibe.. My only criticism: Tom Linton from Jimmy Eat World used to teach guitar lessons in the basement of this place! Why don't they have more of a display of their successful artists from the valley?? And from Mesa in particular?! Crazy. Missed opportunity. All the staff here that I noticed are musicians and they know their music and I could tell they love music. Plenty of free parking in the back and I never seem to have any issues with parking here. They rent instruments to local schools and their price is fair. Service is always good and any issues with rental, easy quick stop for prompt resolution. We are a very musical family! In this house we have a guitar, banjo, ukulele, mandolin, piano, flute, jaw harp, wash board, trombone, drums, tambourine, castanets, tin whistle and probably a few more "must haves" for a hoe down, or if you will, hootenanny! Who doesn't love getaway music played on the banjo?! I love that stuff but wanted lessons. Back in 2004 I began playing and couldn't have got started without this store! Upstairs there's privacy in little rooms to take music lessons. I got 6 lessons once a week to get me started picking and grinning! Yes you can learn banjo here, bassoon, trombonium you name it! This is the kind of store that when you ask a question, not only does the sales guy answer you with knowledgeable replies but another salesman hears you and gets samples of the product you are asking for! They do not carry high end esoteric products but they carry stuff people can afford. They place has been around a long time and occupies nearly a block along with being partners at other places across the road. I'm not really a "music making" kinda person so I haven't really shopped at Milano but I did take some violin lessons (and rented a violin) years ago. The sound of the violin called to me and I had some open time over a summer. Recently my daughter took some singing lessons there and the teacher was extremely patient. Both lesson sets were great experiences, easy and frictionless to setup and cancel when needed. Will use Milano again for future music needs, for sure. read more

I hadn't been to Milano Music in ages and ages, but since I've started taking flute lessons I've needed a few things so trekked on over. I've been there twice in a month. Customer service is outstanding from in-person interactions to telephone calls. For an in-person visit, parking is a breeze. There is free parking in the rear of the store and enter through the back entrance which is clearly marked. It's kind of cool when you enter and hear music floating through the place. I wandered over to where it looked like the woodwind instruments were and starting looking for small attachments for my flute that helped with finger positioning. No sooner did I start browsing and a sales associate was there ready to assist. He pulled it from the rack and rang me up. I was in and out in just a few minutes. A few week later, I needed another attachment to ease some pain I was having in my thumb AND I needed an exercise book my instructor recommended. I first headed up the stairs to an affiliated establishment where sheet music is sold. (Again there, very helpful service.). Back to the accessories: I quickly found what I needed and headed to the register. I wanted to ensure what I had in hand was really what I needed so the sales associate quickly looked it up online and confirmed it was the correct device. Superior customer service! Next, my husband and I took some time to peruse the instruments as he's a guitar player. There were so many fun looking ukuleles and I wanted my husband to get one since I love the sound. He declined but I'm sure he can be convinced to get one someday. Pricing was from low end to high end with an exceptional variety. All in all, I love this place and will intend to head back whenever I need something music related. read more

Called in advance to see if the Guitar Tech was available. Answer was yes. Went in with axe. Guitar Tech was not there. Came back when he was available. Asked for floyd bridge repair quote, and also what would you do to this bc rich warlock if it was yours? Two quotes came back at $300, and $1200. On a $500 guitar. Shakes head. The $300 repair seemed to be of decent quality and the guitar is playable again, but customer service was quite lacking. Zero communication. I had to call in to get updated, and even then I had to get a call back for someone with a clue to tell me when it would be ready. Employees should get some training on how to act like you are absolutely thrilled to work on my gear, or at least learn to convincingly fake it. read more

I was originally quoted 3500 (fair as they aren't going to give me what I purchased for it) Came in today and spoke with a Beth who offered 1200. This is not a pawn shop. I was told when I purchased chello that buy backs are common and store credit is usually offered. I will not be recommending this place to anyone and most definitely not my music stds. I had such a wonderful experience here last week. I had been here a few years prior, and remembered that the selection was quite good. So I set out on a weekday afternoon just to see what they had in stock. And I am glad that I did. The owner greeted me as if he was an old friend. Not in a tacky way at all. It was very sincere and I enjoyed that. I looked at their electrics, and they could tell that I was more of an acoustic player, so they unlocked the acoustic room. From there, I had some great conversation with John. I could've chewed the fat with him all day. He was nice, unassuming and knowledgeable. He encouraged me to pick up anything that I wanted to, and I fell in love with this pre-owned GORGEOUS Takamine Parlor guitar. It was a custom shop piece that sounded and played wonderfully. Although I had no intention of buying anything, it took me very little coaxing to get a new acoustic amplifier. I trusted Johns advice and enjoyed the whole experience. He even gave me a free strap.
