I am so lucky to have lived just down the street from B&H Music for two years, because I don't think I'd have discovered it otherwise. Don't be fooled by their small "hole in the wall" size. B&H can set you up with just about everything you need as a musician: instrument sales and rentals, instrument maintenance (I come here for guitar setups, for instance), guitar pickup upgrades and other customizations, referrals to specialists (they put me in touch with someone who can service my old tube amp), and most importantly: private on-site lessons from top-notch teachers. For the last two years, I've been seeing Jazzmine Farrol for voice and piano lessons, for example. Jazzmine is easily the best music teacher I've ever had, and if anything backs that up, it's the fact that she has a full time slate of returning students that she teaches each week. Despite teaching for more hours than most of us work, she somehow makes time to perform multiple gigs each week as well, demonstrating an unrivaled talent and passion for her trade. I regret having not posted a review before now. Have bought several items in the past. Even when just going in to ask questions he is always willing to take the time to help. I recently purchased a vintage " Ok old " Ukulele. He explained what needed to be done to repair and the cost. Clearly not a valuable instrument and cost may not be worth doing. He was very tactful in explaining this. Did not Matter to me the cost as I know my wife would enjoy it no matter. Long and short of it got it back to today and was awesome. I am highly disappointed. I live 40 minutes away and my friend called to see if the store might be willing to stay open past 6 so I could rent an instrument. 10 minutes past 6, the girl was kicking me out. Why say you can stay open when you can't? Now I drove 40 minutes there for nothing. I would have just shown up on Saturday if the store manager couldn't go have stayed open... now I really am not going to rent an instrument there. read more

I mainly come in here for piano music for my students. As far as lesson books, practicing method books, etc. you can find most of what you need. He doesn't stock a TON of stuff, but I typically find what I need. As far as other kinds of books (popular, special order) there's not a ton of options, but I do occasionally find a book or two to use. They DO give a teacher discount if you're in their system too. They also have small music studios where teachers teach different instruments. read more

What a disgusting owner Joseph Penton....he definitely should be shut down or sell to someone who knows what customer service and respect is all about. He doesnt like when a customer needs to change a date of a lesson, (he refuses to teach you), he gets so angry and rudely refuses to communicate any further with you and says if you dont get your guitar in for repairs due to your heavy work schedule. Excellent service from Joseph. I needed some music books, which had to be special ordered. I was promptly informed when they arrived (2 weeks). I think the staff provides excellent service; they do not overpromise. I also purchased a clarinet (no experience whatsoever), and Joseph demonstrated how to apply cork grease and put it together. He also told me about different reed thicknesses and made sure I had everything I needed to start. All services that Amazon doesn't provide. Renting was also an option, but with COVID I think I'd rather get a new instrument... especially since it is a wind instrument! read more

I've only had a few guitar lessons and went in to buy my first guitar. I went to a different store first and felt so awkward I left wanting to quit. Thought I would try this place. As soon as I walked in I was met with a friendly face. She was super helpful, pointing out a few different choices they recommend and let me just browse comfortably. I fell in love with a beautiful Córdoba guitar and came back the same day to pick it up. Super happy with purchase, she helped me tune it before leaving since I'm still learning. After a few big mishaps with cars and guitars, I am wary of most tradespeople (doctors and dentists fall under the same category.) Joseph at B&H Music restored my faith in humanity. He did what he said he'd do, didn't surprise me with a higher price at pickup time, had the two Taylors ready same day, and in addition to installing strings on my 6 and 12-string guitars, he shaved the saddles just the right amount to lower the action without sacrificing much (if any) tone. All at a very competitive price, which included my preferred Elixir strings that I couldn't find elsewhere. Regarding other posts about "rudeness," those people must need coddling. Joseph is busy, there's no time for small talk. Just state your business, and he'll accommodate you if possible. If he can't, he'll tell you. I've used 2 famed "luthiers" in the past, and was not at all happy. I actually drove off smiling instead of swearing this time. I came by to get a few repairs done on a ukulele my parents bought me from Mexico. When they diagnosed the issue, they told me they could have my ukulele ready in two days. The got it done in one! And it sounds great now! Super friendly! So glad I came by to this shop instead of another. read more

Came by with my mom. Every time she goes to the Philippines, she needs her supplies for her little after school student band that she supports. Came to buy reeds but she also asked for used instruments.. Thankfully they have some that were affordable to us. We desperately needed some instruments for the kids in the Philippines. Some of the instruments they have there are over 10 years old and since it's close to the ocean it gets damaged easily but they still try to fix it with rubber bands. B & H music staff was great to us. I was able to try out the clarinet we purchased in one of their practice rooms. I was so rusty. lol. The clarinet is used but refurbished so it was in great condition. We also purchased a flute. Definitely a great spot if you want some lessons or any music supplies. Will definitely come back in the near future for the next time we need to buy more supplies. read more

Yes, his dad was the civics teacher at SPHS. Keep the business local. There are different types of lessons available. My other son also loves his drum lessons with James Rinehart. I'm loving this place! I started taking piano lessons just a few months ago with Shagay, and it's a bright spot of my week. She's a fantastic teacher with such positive energy. The lesson time goes quickly, but it's pithy- I always have something new to work on at home. She just keeps pushing me forward. I started from ground zero as an adult with no knowledge of how to read music let alone how to play anything, and now I'm able to play some decent songs! It's a serious win! read more

Horrible customer service. I recently bought a used guitar from a private seller. it needed new strings and had a minor problem with one of the bridge pins. I took it into B&H hoping to get some help with the pin, to get it restrung and cleaned up a little (as they advertise this on their website) the girl, with purple hair who opened the shop, opened 5 minutes later than the posted 10am, hurried about her business putting the signs outside, rearranging the sheet music and started counting her cash drawer all without even glancing at me or acknowledging my presence (I had been waiting outside the shop since 9:55am with my guitar in my hand because I had to work that morning) i finally gave up on a friendly greeting and asked for Joe (who is the manager/owner) I was told that he never comes in early and should be here around 1pm (still she didn't offer to help me) then she complained, with a pretty colorful vocabulary, about the Escondido drivers and "sorry the one time I was late YOU happened to come in at 10am" How inconvenient for her. I then asked if she knew about guitars and if she could take a look at the pin problem... she did and informed me that i would probably have to order original Fender pins to get the right fit because their store only had one size available. I mentioned that maybe I'll go over to Guitar center and see if their selection was any better to which she scowled at me and said "you can do whatever you want, but I hate Guitar center because their customer service sucks" (really compared to who... you?) I left with my guitar and without buying strings because i couldn't imagine spending even a penny somewhere where the customer is treated like an idiot and the employee cant even manage a friendly "good morning" ... Lucky for me two doors down is ANOTHER guitar shop called The Music Playce. I walked directly from B&H to this store and was treated the way all custom rs want to be treated. Gene helped me there and not only told me he could fix it but sold me strings and restrung it for only $15. I left the guitar in his safekeeping and picked it up later, the pin was fixed, new strings and I was a happy customer. Joe from B&H, a little advice for you would be to get rid of the purple hair girl. she is unpleasant, rude and not worth the minimum wage you pay her.
