We have now entered the realm of student music... along with (what seemed) the rest of the entire local school district(s). Bertrand's Music already did a great job marketing last year to introduce the kids to various instruments, and to provide parents with information about how to secure rental instruments and lessons. The fliers and information were helpful to return to this location. We were fortunate to identify a couple of violins from close friends but they desperately needed restring and repair. We came in Saturday to meet Troy - who was the nicest young man to help us identify the services needed. He provided detailed information about timeline and quote and made the whole experience painless. Mind you~ this is their busiest season at the start of the school year. Even though the building was filled with families, students, crying babies, and various instrument noises.. Troy provided top notch service and executed all needs without a hitch. We submitted instruments on Saturday and received a detailed telephone call by Monday to retrieve the instruments. Even upon return, we had the high fortune of meeting with Troy again. One of his fellow associates (newer in her training) helped us at first. Troy came to the rescue to help clarify the transaction, identified a computer error in billing, and skillfully provided us with the close of transaction needed. He went above and beyond to then offer to tune the instruments using one of their tools behind the counter (and he doesn't even play violin! just knows the ear and use of equipment). The violins sounded lovely. I never met this young gentleman before, but if Troy is the standard of hiring at this type of establishment, he has secured my business and my recommendation to come back to this Bertrand's. He was kind, well informed, and efficient. I was able to have two instruments repaired, tuned and timely prepared for the this wretched band season (I have two very excited musicians and a new box of earplugs.) The prices were reasonable and the service quick. He couldn't have provided better service. Be sure to ask for Troy when you return if you need anything related to music service needs. He made the experience fantastic and we will return and recommend. read more

Bertrand's Music is a music store focused on "school band & orchestra sales, rentals, lessons, and repair," as stated on their website. Our middle school band teachers works with Bertrand's Music exclusively and I understand that they trust them. The store itself looks nice. They had some instruments for sale displayed, along with music books. They have rooms for lessons in the back. The parking lot is usually congested though and parking is not easy. Our experience is only with getting an instrument repair quote from them. I'm sure the lessons and rentals are just fine here, but we would not exactly recommend Bertrand's for repairs, especially if you weren't even referred to come here by your school band for an instrument that belongs to the school. They have to ship out the instrument somewhere off site to even give us a quote, and we had to wait ten business days just to hear back that the instrument was unsalvageable and not worth repairing. They were unable to provide us with any written detail of what exactly needed to be repaired and what the cost would be. I'm not sure why they do it like this, because it appears a bit unprofessional. If you're looking for someone to repair a specific instrument that you own, we don't think this is the perfect place to bring it. It would probably be best to find someone who specializes in repairing that instrument to do it on site. Repairs were just one aspect of their business and it's technically a relationship between the school band and Bertrand's, so it didn't bother us. The staff were very nice and accommodating, and we appreciated that. They provided us with a receipt that the school needed, and it was as simple as that. Thank you! read more

We brought a saxophone in for a repair estimate and they quoted over $1,000 for an "overhaul" that it "needed". That's more than the instrument is worth. Then I found B&H music in Escondido- they cleaned, adjusted, and replaced the cork for the saxophone for under $70 AND gave us a free loaner saxophone in the meantime. Their turnaround time was only a few days and Bertrand's quoted me 5-7 weeks for repair and would charge for a rental instrument for that time. It's worth a 20 minute drive to save over $1,000! What a rip off. I'd give zero stars to Bertrand's if I could. read more

We rented a flute for about 2 years and finally purchase on for our daughter once we were sure she wanted and continued to play the flute. They used our rental money to give a discount on our purchase. We also rented an oboe that was faulty and they replaced it. Customer service is always good. And our flute rentals were always easy when something is wrong and they would swap it out without any problems. read more

We've rented a cello from Bertrand and have been very happy with the service and maintenance. For example, one day before a concert, a cello string came off due to normal wear and tear, and we reached out to Bertrand for help. Mr. Dennis G. understood the urgency of the situation and kindly assisted us in repairing the cello. In addition to the prompt service and kindness of the Bertrand team, our daughter's cello teacher, Mr. Elliot R., has been wonderful. He does an excellent job balancing encouragement with allowing each student the space to develop their own self-motivation to learn the cello. We needed to fix our trumpet. Instead of looking at the trumpet, they tried to convince us it was not repairable and convince us to rent one or buy one. Either way it would cost us at least $200. They also said that repair would take 60 days. We went to music central in Mira Mesa. They fixed the trumpet in 4 days and it cost me $45. Don't go here. If you need a second opinion, go to music central. Honest people that won't try to up sale you. read more

My daughter has been renting a clarinet from Bertrands for a few years. It recently developed a problem with one of its registers so we brought it in. They happily replaced it with another rental instrument which we took home, but upon assembling and playing it we discovered that the key mechanisms were stiffer/sticky. It was difficult for her to adapt to. We returned the next day and they upgraded it to a new one without hesitation. Terrible experience - bought a ukulele for my son a few years ago at Bertrad's. Took it in two weeks ago to fix a broken string. They convinced me to replace all of the strings, which was unnecessary but I agreed. The day after one of the strings popped off. I took it back and they said they fixed it. Happened again the next day. I noticed a black ring was missing, which seemed to be the problem. When I went back again, they said it would be $80 in labor and parts to fix it and that it was our fault. They are rude and don't stand behind their products. I will never shop here again. read more

Absolutely horrible experience with this store. We just moved to the area. I have a long history with music stores being a 30+ year hobbyist guitar player and collector, and we've rented trumpet from other stores for my son and had great experiences from stores I'd give five stars to. We were in good spirits as we entered the store and that quickly turned sour as the first thing we were greeted with was, "please go over here and scan our QR code and start entering your information.". In my head I'm thinking, "ok thanks robot greeting person." Just really cold. The next thing I'm noticing is how crappy the quality of the instruments they have showing in the room is. Next the terrible pricing plans on top of the crappy instrument selection and sub-par rent to own program and awkward teenagers with no warmth, lacking customer service experience. I asked for the manager hoping I'd find someone with a bit more experience working with customers and the manager also seemed barely out of high school and no sense for how to deal with customers... just a very cold experience of we want to charge you as much money as we can for as crappy an instrument as we can get away with giving you experience. I finally just decided I was done with this store and walked out. We went over to Nick Rail and it was a polar opposite experience. We were greeted warmly and they were very accommodating to our requirements and working with us to get to an acceptable instrument and rental agreement with a reasonable applicable credit toward purchase. My son takes lessons with Ms. Stephanie for the Violin and it's a great deal. Because of COVID-19 we are doing virtual lessons and Ms. Stephanie makes it super easy for us and our son. Mr. Bertrand personally helped me with ordering an intermediate flute on a Saturday, via phone and text. It was in the store for pickup 48 hours later (we chose to pick it up just to see the store). My daughter is over the moon with this flute, a Yamaha 200 series. A huge improvement in her playing and tone over the school district flutes. The young staff at the store are incredibly nice, knowledgeable, and very helpful. Big recommend. As a bonus they have baritone ukuleles and tenor guitars, which I have never seen in any store - am now thinking of buying some after my hands-on experience there. read more

This store has been great at taking the time to help us find things, or make suggestions on what we may need. They have a huge selection of music books for most instruments. Work they have done on our guitar and saxophone has been quick. They made sure to confirm the repair charges before proceeding with the work. They do tend to run low on reeds for lesser used instruments, but that is pretty standard for most stores. read more

I agree with Chris down below. Customer service is very rude and robotic. A few months ago, Dennis was the person who helped me. Yeah, he tries to sound professional alright during sales but not when we had to drop their private lessons because of ridiculous pricing plans and over charged rates. I came in one day, Dennis didn't want to help me clean up my sons instrument. He says they were "BUSY" while I was the only customer there and about 5 guys standing around. Wow really! This is ridiculous especially if I paid for the POM. He even suggested I either leave it overnight or come back the next day. How inconvenient especially if my son instrument won't be available within those times. When I walked out of there, I said I was DONE with this place. I won't be renting and doing business with these guys anymore. I won't even refer them to my friends. The 4 1/2 stars is bogus. read more

My two sons have been playing the Clarinet with Opus for three years. Then we moved to North Country and their Middle school recommended that we looked into Bertrand's, as they did not have any quality Clarinets. We have been renting them for the last two years and happy with their prices and the instruments. What made me write this review is their willingness to go the extra mile in the current stay-at-home mandate. One the Clarinets went flat and I emailed Bertrand's to see what they could do. Outstanding customer service! I had a one time need to use a solid music stand for a lecture. Using the chat box on their website, I asked if I could rent one. "We don't rent them, but we'd be happy to loan you one", they said. I was stunned. I haven't experienced this kind of customer service since I can't remember when. I did borrow the music stand over night, saving me from having to buy one for a one time use. My daughter was in need of a violin for her music class. After calling around, Bertrand's offered me the best monthly rate for a violin rental. For an extra $40 they offered me an accessories package, which had everything she needed to play her instrument (e.g. rosin, music stand, polish cloth, neck support, etc.). They were even kind enough to throw in her required music book for free. Bertrand's was the only music store who also offered a maintenance plan. For $4 a month, all repairs and maintenance are covered. I loved how they anticipated the influx of customers needing to purchase or rent an instrument for the school year and streamlined the process. After informing them that I wanted to rent a violin, they directed me to a group of tables already set up. They had a price list and forms all set up. I was in and out in 15-20 minutes time. My only gripe is that what they quoted me over the phone was different from the actual price. The price ended up equaling what other music stores were offering me. However, their stellar service more than made up for it. read more

After driving all over Convoy area to various Karaoke Stores and finding that 100% of the ones I went to were closed. Not just closed for the day, but closed and gone! I sat in the parking lot of the 3rd place I tried and google'd Karaoke Stores and found Bertrand's Music. Gave a call and sure enough, they sold Karaoke CD's. 10 mins later I was there. The selection was not very big but it was better then nothing at all. I've never needed to buy this kind of thing so I don't know if the prices were all that great or not. I was surprised to see CD's for $17 and up. They did have some older ones for $5 or less even. I took 4 @ $12.99 each and that was good enough. Staff was nice and the place was busy with parents and kids getting some lessons and what not. I will keep this place in mind for the future. read more

We have been coming here primarily for guitar lessons for my son. If this review was based on his instructor and lessons alone, it would be definitely deserve a 5 star rating. His particular teacher is very knowledgeable on the theories of music so my son not only learns about how to play music but understands the principles behind it. The have been very flexible on timing as it is very had to keep a schedule for an active 13 y/o. As for the merchandise here, we honestly only come here out of convenience. The pricing is a little higher than other places in the San Diego area but the staff is helpful and knowledgeable but be warned, you will be paying a little more for your items here. The do have a nice selection of various instruments as well as different music books for any level of learning. If they do not have it in stock, they are able to order it for you. read more

This place is amazing for anything that has to do with Ukuleles. I bought both a banjolele and a baritone uke there. The banjolele didn't sound quite right, but they had an in-house tech who was about to set it up while I waited. Their strings are buy one get one free, so I can get my baritone and soprano strings for the price of one! They offer a FREE group class every other Wednesday just for the ukulele. The staff is always friendly and very knowledgeable about the product they carry. I used to play bass clarinet too, and would always stop here for reeds and cleaning supplies. read more

So I've been meaning to post. My daughter is going into fifth grade and learning to play and instrument for the first time. I went online to schedule a music band blast off. I somehow scheduled it in San Bernardo. I found this out when went to the store in Carmel Mountain. They just finished the band blast off for the Carmel Mountain store.
