Not an Iowan. I asked around for some recommendations of what's good to eat here and B-Bop's was the only highlight someone could give. This and Texas road house..... I think it's good here! Scott and I were tooling around the North Grand Mall area around lunch time and we were again hungry for a drive through experience. It would be nice during these COVID-19 times for outdoor dining, but that seems to be limited in Ames. Yet, B-Bop's did have a few available socially-distant tables outside and next to the cones blocking off their parking lot. B-Bop's is also next to a drive-through Italian place, if an alternative cuisine suits your fancy. I'll give this place 5 stars as Scott's burger, my fish sandwich, and the fries were outstanding, especially after I took mine home and paired it with a bottle of Exile G.G. beer. There was a long line that moved quickly and the staff from ordering to delivery were friendly and efficient. A special thank you to them for taking a $50 bill in payment. Normally we would use plastic, but we needed the cash to buy sweet corn for dinner. Note to the nearby US Bank - How about dispensing smaller bills from your ATMs? read more

Wow, I am at a loss for words. After 4 years of hearing how great this place is, I was able to experience the hype myself and B-Bop's did not fall short of my expectations. I ordered a quarter pounder deluxe with bacon and cheese, fries and a drink as well as a cheese cup to dip my fries in. The price was $7.76 which I think is very reasonable for a tasty meal that was very filling. There is no seating inside so we ate outside where there are tables provided with an umbrella. The place was busy and it only took a few minutes to crank out the food for my order and three other people. I would recommend this greasy food to any bar rat that is hungover from the night before or any other average citizen. Be-Bop's just barely hangs on to its 2 star rating. This time I knew better than to order the mediocre chili and anyway, I wanted to eat in the car while driving distracted. I really wanted a couple of simple hot dogs and discovered that they don't have them. So I ordered a Bacon Barbecue burger with two patties. Well, just like the chili, the burgers are not really worth going back for. I really see nothing to distinguish it from McDonald's or Hardee's, etc and in fact it may not be as good. The burger patties were machine made compressed meat disks, unseasoned. They have no crust from the grill and no distinctive flavor. They are pretty greasy and dull gray. The meat is not very good quality. I know this sounds strange, but hamburger can be tough. This does not mean that the patty cannot be chewed off, but that the individual little ground pieces are tough at a basic level. B Bop's beef is tough. They have a simple menu and business model. I know they are trying to distinguish themselves as a nostalgic place but the food I have had just misses the mark. I can't see a reason to go back. read more

I like B-Bops. The sloppy joes are a good alternative when no Maid-Rite is in sight. The hamburgers and shakes are solid. The chile is great for fast food. Everything is good. Nothing is exceptional. Only a few concerns. Inconsistency is an issue. Sometimes the sloppy joes are so greasy they are inedible. And why must I seemingly always have to beg for ketchup with my fries? Was hungry and in Ames and this spot was next to a gas station we stopped at so we checked it out. Pretty cool double drive-thru setup. Kind of has a '50s America charm to it. Ordered their basic burger and it had that weird Big Mac type sauce on it. Was honestly pretty messy and mediocre burger all around but did the job of curbing hunger. Not a bad spot for when you're craving junky fast food and don't want to go to a major chain. I was in love with their burgers so deeply that I would have one almost every day (because I grew up with one in my town) and it only took gaining 10 pounds for me to stop! LOL The reason i'm giving this review 1 star is because of the service I received. I went through the drive thru at around 1:30pm on a weekend afternoon. I know it can get busy I work in the service industry so i understand but I was waiting at the menu/where you order for 5min. I said "hello" 5+ times and said my order. I thought maybe the mic was broken and i didn't want to hold up the line, so i went up to the window. As soon as I drove away, I heard the person greet the next car and ask what they wanted. When i got up to the window, the kid asked me twice if the order of car behind me was mine, i said no both times and explained that I waited quite a while and said hello many times and no one answered and I asked if i could place my order with him instead and he said yes. He closes the window and 4+ people were looking at my directly from inside, so i looked back at them. I could hear them talking badly about me, and saying that next time I need to go through the line again since i did not get my order taken. When they opened up the window i explained everything yet again with a whole bunch of the workers watching me. All i ordered was a burger and a Dr pepper. They told me i have to get going because I'm holding up the line. I honestly couldn't believe this. It's so unprofessional to purposefully not serve me considering they greeted the car behind me immediately and I was sitting at the menu for a long time saying hello over and over and had the audacity to tell me to go through the line again when they didn't even take my order the first time!! I have given hundreds of b-bops gift cards to my friends and spent significantly more than that on food. My family goes for family nights, my grandparents eat outside in the summer, me and my friends get burgers when we're hungover, i eat them 8 days a week. But after this, I'm pushed away and don't feel the same. I thought that b-bops would have that Iowa hospitality and love since they're an Iowa food place only...but sadly that's not the case. I know my review will not get me anything, probably will never be noticed by any of the managers, and if it is, they most likely won't read this far and this unfortunate event can never be taken back. This classic style Burger joint is something that Iowa has to offer. It is something of a state thing, so if you want to try a cheeseburger and fries the old way this is a place that you should go to. It does not have a sit down location within the building, but the drive-through is are pretty easy to go through. I LOVE B-Bop's! I really try to get a burger each time I'm back home. Last time I didn't get around to it, and I wasn't happy about that. I'm in San Diego now, and In-n-Out burgers are good, but for a good fast food burger, I'd trade all the In-N-Outs here for a B-Bop's. Their burgers I think are flame-broiled instead of fried, I think that's what I like. Fries are decent. And they (at least used to) have Pepsi products, so I can get a Mountain Dew. I had the worst drive thru experience! The drive thru cashier could not get my order right after being AT THE WINDOW. After 20 minutes of trying to explain my simple order of 2 hamburgers with no tomatoes she goes to get the asst. manager. DELPHINA FOREST is her name. I had said to her "honestly this is ridiculous I am in a huge hurry" she replies with "fine we just won't serve you then." I HAD ALREADY PAID FOR MY FOOD!! You definitely don't want to go here if you're trying to eat healthy, but it's nice for something different every now and then. Their fries are extremely crispy and their burgers melt in your mouth. I'm not from Iowa and had never been to Bbops until about 6 wks ago. I have now ate there 4 times because it seems I just can't get enough! The fries have been FRESH EVERY single visit and the bacon cheeseburger is DELICIOUS! I'll be leaving Iowa soon and will definitely miss this place! I am never impressed with the fries but the fries aren't the main attraction. I have never had their Chilli, Chicken sandwich or anything besides a burger. So I can't comment on that. I wish Bbops had a place to sit inside and eat though. I hate having to wait to drive home and eat one of these. yes, there is a place to eat outside but try doing that in January. We have been customers of B-Bops for several years. I believe the food they now give out is much lower quality than years back. We love the french fries but their chili and burgers are not so great. The service is even worse. The last three times we have stopped by and ordered the Bacon/Cheese Burgers. Well would you believe it, as of yet, we have never received a burger with a single strip Bacon on it. (Why else would you order a Bacon/Cheese burger if you didn't want bacon). It is evidenced by the idle chit chat going on that no attention is paid to what is put into the sack or burgers. The order was taken correctly evidence by the printout inside the sack, however, the burgers had no bacon on them. We even ordered one without ketchup and "you guessed it:" it was drowning in ketchup. I am willing to give people a second and third chance, but I believe B-Bops has runout of chances.
