What a wonderful surprise on Centrepointe in Ottawa! The hosts are fantastic, and the food is amazing! I started with a bowl of Tom Kha with shrimp , and it had a perfect balance of taste and smoothness with a slight kick. Fresh mushroom slices and lemongrass with coconut milk left me excited for more. The main course was the Grilled Salmon which was not only a large portion of fish in a mixed seafood stir-fry with a side of rice... it left me stunned as to the taste and quality of this restaurant's cuisine. I was in town for the holidays and came across this hidden gem while D and I along with my mom was trying to look for a place for dinner. We were actually trying to go to a dumpling place in the same plaza but they were closed, so we decided to come here instead. It is a small little restaurant, but I find the atmosphere inside to be comfortable and cozy. The seating was not cramp, in fact, I really appreciated the fact they didn't try to cramp in as many tables as they can in the restaurant. The servers were professional and friendly. Decided to come check out Baan Thai based on a friends recommendation and I also looked at a bunch of yelp reviews so it looked promising. Here's what we ordered: 1) Chicken satay skewers 4 for $10 very good 4/5 2) Tom kha gai - chicken coconut milk soup - this was outstanding and how Tom kha soup should taste 5/5 3) Pad Thai chicken 2.5/5 the flavour didn't really do it for me. It was thick and gluey but I've had better tasting Pad Thai. Tasted like the tamarind paste they used needed to be watered down a bit and maybe add a bit of lime to balance the flavour. 3) Beef kra pow 3.5/5 - beef was tough. With minimal pieces of meat with lots of peppers. We ordered medium spice and it was too spicy for my wife. I found the spice level okay but the beef was tough. Not tender Here's where I found not to my liking. The dishes were a bit more expensive than other Thai restaurants I've had in Ottawa. The servings I found a bit smaller and for the price not as generous of a serving. For these four dishes my daughter had a sprite and the total was $78 with tax and tip. No alcohol and just water for us to drink. Service was a bit spotty as the restaurant filled up. The ladies serving seemed a bit overwhelmed. Maybe only 3 1/2 stars, if I could... mostly because of the cramped seating. But we were a party of 9 which had to be seated at 2 tables back to back, and this place gets very, very busy over the lunch hour! I'm so glad I made reservations. Previous reviewers have been right-on with their comments about the location; this place is surprising because it's in the middle of nowhere in a strip mall! Having said that, the seating area is really not big: about the size of an open-concept apartment, if you can imagine that. They've put 2 sets of curtains beside a couple of the tables, but they didn't do much to diminish the noise in here. It was hard to hear each other speak! Really it's a 4-star because of the food and the presentation of it - it was wonderful and so pretty! I will try to post a picture or 2. We ordered green tea which was aromatic and flavourful ($2.50); I ordered spring rolls ($3.50) which were very, very tasty - so good in fact that a colleague requested an order after seeing this! The menu is not extensive, pages and pages. Instead, they offer a few variations of a couple of things, ie: noodles with either beef, chicken, or shrimp; and stir-fry with the same choices, and so on. They have a special of the day which gives you a cross section of samples from these choices, very reasonable at $14.00. However, I chose a plate that had cashews and chicken in it ("H" on the menu - about $10.00). The food was really very good. And everyone appeared to enjoy their meals. It was quite filling! And for our event, the service was good: attentive enough without hovering, and fast enough. BF & I decided to try out Baan Thai for our date night. He had made a reservation for 7pm on a Saturday, several days ahead of time. When we arrived, at 7pm, we had to wait because all the tables were occupied. I'm not sure what is the point of making a reservation if we are to arrive and expected to wait? The couple behind us mentioned they had also made a reservation. We weren't impressed. We waited 20 minutes for a table to leave and be cleaned, before we were seated. I decided on the chicken panang since I had heard many good comments on it. BF couldn't decide on a dish so he asked the waitress for a recommendation. She didn't seem to care and was in a hurry. We felt rushed. In the end he ordered the yellow curry. He also got a soup for appetizer. Our food came fairly quickly. The soup he had ordered was very watery, he didn't care for it. The yellow curry was good, and the panang was decent. I found the portions small for the price, and the side of rice was extra (2.50$). While the food was not bad, it could have definitely been much better. After the reviews we'd read, we were disappointed. We enjoyed our dinner here... it was delicious, and at the same time nothing spectacular. We found the food overly sweet. We ordered the oyster beef with additional broccoli, the sauce was a bit watery, and sweet. We also ordered the Pham Thai, the noodles were cooked perfectly, but the flavour lacked complexity. Needed more fish sauce, garlic and chillies. The service was good, besides the fact they started cleaning the floors while we were eating... and the smell of cleaning products overwhelmed my senses. Excellent Thai food! Hidden gem material? Probably. The location is out of the way and the quality of the restaurant was surprising for a suburban strip mall. We ordered the Kaow Ob Supparod (pineapple dish) and a shrimp and green bean curry dish. Both were excellent, almost too much food but too good to bring home anything. The food was not particularly spicy, but full of flavor, which I like. Nothing seemed over or under cooked. Restaurant is beautifully and tastefully decorated. Lots of things to look at without being too busy Seating area does not feel cramped for a small space, but best suited for couples or small groups of four. Six people would require moving tables around. Lovely dinner wear in the blue and white, and bamboo table mats, nice little extras. I did notice what seemed to be a lot of security cameras for a small place, counted at least 4. Service was quick and friendly. We don't remember waiting on food very long but we had a small order, just two dishes. We visited on a Monday evening, but there was still a small crowd finishing their meals around 7pm. Mostly older, Caucasian couples who could probably afford to eat here more often then ourselves. We sat beside a group of women talking about their pets, kids, gardeners and younger husband. Felt like an episode of Nepean House Wives. The food is not cheap, you can see their menu online, but it is good very quality and portion sizes are reasonable. We would definitely go back again. OK Ottawa, it's official, you don't know good/authentic Thai food. Tried this place based on it being the #1 recommended on Yelp (lol). Pad Thai was seriously ketchup-y and lacked tamarind, wasn't even served with lime! Had to ask for it, as well as chopsticks. Beef salad was seasoned alright but there was no MINT in it, which makes the dish, as well the meat was not rare or tender enough. I've had to update my review, and unfortunately downgrade Baan Thai from my previous 5-star review. The food is still outstanding, and it remains one of my favourite Ottawa restaurants. However the service has significantly deteriorated over the last year. I returned to Baan Thai three times in the past six months. The first two episodes were immediately prior to shows at the Centrepointe Theatre. We arrived at the restaurant at 6pm prior to an 8pm show, which should be plenty of time for a small restaurant to service a table of 2. Unfortunately, I was almost late at both episodes due to the meal taking more than 60 minutes to prepare after ordering. The final visit was for take-out. It was a standard order, and we were told to pick up the order at 5:50pm. The restaurant wasn't busy, although there were around 4 people waiting for their takeout. The order was not ready until 6:15, more than 60 minutes after the order was placed! I was quite upset, and the waitress said that the pick-up time was an "estimate" and they do their best. While that's fine for one visit, when it's a repeated problem it gets frustrating. Save plenty of time for your visit here. I hope the service improves! read more

Thai I had a craving for flavorful and spicy food, so I decided to try some Thai food. I came here as most reviews were positive and were saying this place was a hidden gem, and the photos looked beautiful and delicious as well. I was scared as some reviews said the wait for dining/take-out was very long (near 1 hour)! But I came 45 minutes before closing on Sunday night so I figured it shouldn't be that busy. There were 3 other tables wrapping up, which was a good sign! The interiors are clean and comfortable, although decoration is not as ornate as some other restaurants. I ordered the duck (red curry $17...the website prices were cheaper so it must of gone up), and the grilled calamari appetizer ($8). I was disappointed that a medium jasmine rice cost $3.50 as usually other places have a small side of rice for free. Fortunately, the wait was only about 15 minutes for the food; once we got the food, we were the last ones dining! Red duck curry: good portion, duck meat was tender, and red curry sauce was slightly spicy and had a great harmony of flavors. There was sliced baby corn, peppers, and lettuce. Really good with the sauce drizzled over the rice! Grilled calamari: tender, and charred slightly. The spicy sauce it came with was actually spicy! However, the portion for this was really small (see my pic); it should be double of what it was! Service was ok, I had to ask to have my water filled up the first time but after that it was fine. They were probably tired and wanting to go home. If you come before closing, they start to sort the washed utensils so it is loud at times. Overall, their prices are WAY too high...the duck curry would have been about $15 elsewhere and the calamari was too small of a portion. Baan Thai has a devoted take out fanbase - Since the restaurant is small, you may have trouble finding a table on last minute notice. If you want to eat in the comfort of your own home then take out is a great option 2. As mentioned earlier, it is the bestttt idea to call in advance for a table. They'll have it really with menus and waters right before you walk in Baan Thai is one of the only restaurants that's survived over the years in this quaint neighbourhood. Ordered: kaow ob supparod - Rice was honestly really good, not sure if intended but reminds me of a Thai take on Spanish Paella! Did not like how shrimp and mussel shells were still on, along with the cashews (just distracted from the rest of the dish). Pineapples also tasted shampooey? - 3/5stars panang - overly sweet and consistency of curry was a lil too thick. too much starch? - 2.5/5 pad thai - yea...just bad unfortunately...way too ketchupy, and sweet (a repeated theme). This pad Thai should not cost more than $8.00 and even thats generous. - 2/5 guay teau lad na - honestly no major complaints here other than being sweet as well. Nice blend of fresh veggies (kale was a surprise but tasted really good) and good texture on noodles! - 3.5/5 Being from Toronto and having Pai as my fav Thai restaurant, it was a risk trying this place. I have allergies, and twice they put in a substance that they had said they would take out. That's not just careless, that's dangerous. Also, you should bring an iPhone or iPad with you, as you should expect to wait. I've waited more than half an hour at times for takeout food - that's half an hour after the time they said it would be ready. Eating in also had the same loong waiting period. read more

I would agree that the food is way better than one would expect from a strip mall. The inside is quite nice as well, so I wouldn't hesitate to take a date there. As a vegetarian, I was surprised at the limited number of tofu dishes for a Thai place. You would never expect a quality Thai restaurant to be smack-dab in the middle of a strip mall. What's more, this strip mall is located in a community that is mostly made up of older people and families with very young kids. Not that stereotypical Thai eating crowd. Yet Baan Thai thrives and is a well kept secret to those in Ottawa's west end. The restaurant is owned by a Thai family and all those working at the authentic Thai restaurant are part of the family. It all comes out in the wonderful experience one gets each time they to to Baan Thai. The service is great, with each employee putting out a warm and welcoming vibe. The music in the background feeds that warmth, just as the wood and bamboo finish creates a very authentic feel. The food is what people come for and there is nothing but good things that can be said of what comes out of the Baan Thai kitchen. With a large menu, the selection is enormous yet not muddled. The soups are all authentic and alive with flavours. The main dishes are just as impressive. The ingredients used are all fresh and it comes out in the food. The spring rolls are to die for and the Pad Thai is out of this world. The only less than perfect aspect of Baan Thai is the drink selection. Baan Thai is there to stay and the neighborhood knows so you might want to get a reservation during peak hours! Where to begin? I' ve tried many items many times. Get the fresh wrap with peanut sauce or even spring rolls that are perfection! The presentation is always very nice with shredded cabbage and carrots that you can look at, or as I like to do, add into the magic. Try ALL the curries. All of them. Kind of sweet, but nevertheless delicious. You must get the pad Thai which manages to be not too greasy, with al dente noodles and amazing flavours I cannot begin to describe. Chinese broccoli? Salty, crunchy, spicy, a treat. The fillet of salmon with tamarind sauce? To die for and still great for sharing. Family of five, five dishes and some appetizers but the plates always go back to the kitchen clean. The family run business is always good with their service and accommodate you the best they can, which pretty damn good given their tiny space! Just had Baan Thai for the first time. Pad Thai was horrible so bad I couldn't finish it. Curry was too runny and bland it doesn't come with rice that's a first for me. We got 2 appetizers the shrimp egg roll and calamari neither was good, shrimp egg roll was hard and basically it was just a whole shrimp rolled in egg roll skin and the bland calamari. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the level of bustling seems to be in wide variance, but I've seen this place so busy on a Tuesday that you have to call ahead for a reservation. The soups are divine. Probably my favorite Thai broth for a few hundred kilometers. The mango salad can be pretty good, too, but the tossing can be inconsistent. I am a fan of their curries, but be forewarned: they do err on the sweet side. Very Thai-ey without the weird quirks you get at the more gritty Thai places. Service: The service here was a little slow, but not too bad. Two servers worked together to tend to the dining room which resulted in a few slip-ups that we saw but didn't experience. Food: Thai food is a balancing act between sour, salty, and sweet. I found everything at Baan Thai to be too far on the "sweet" end. Granted, I don't like sweet things much, but the boyfriend does and he agreed. We enjoyed the curried duck in spite of finding it sweet, but the pad thai was too sweet for me to enjoy. I did, however, like the Tom Yum Soup, even though neither it nor the curry were as spicy as I'd have preferred. I got the feeling that everything had been sort of toned down for people who might be trying Thai food for the first time, but whatever the reason I just couldn't enjoy it as much as I'd like to. Food here is great, and they accommodate gluten free patrons by guaranteeing the Pad Thai and curries are gf (always, not just on request).

This is a real gem in a very non discreet location. Always make reservations as they are always busy. The food is excellent - definitely try their chicken penang as it's always bang on.
