We love this place and go here probably at least once a week. The servers who have been there for awhile are wonderful, and they seem to do the lionshare of the work, and the new facility is gorgeous. All of the soups are delicious--Tom Yum especially is great comfort food, but my favorite is the Pad Woon Sen (bean-thread noodles). Fabulous food! Started with the sampler platter, all yummy . I had the crazy noodle which I will have again; perfect mingling of spice and heat. All 3 at our table were quite impressed. It deserves a 5-star rating food. It would get a 4-1/2 if possible. The problem was the waitress. Very slow and got a dish wrong, clueless, scrambling. Food is fantastic. Come here for work visit and came here because well, I love Thai. The only disappointment was the fried banana which was basically an egg roll banana and vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate and the service. Probably some of the best Asian food you can find in Manhattan. Most of the curry dishes are a little salty for my tastes, but my go-to dishes are always excellent (basil fried rice, pad thai, black magic). The new restaurant (they took over the old Taco Casa building) is beautifully decorated, but the service has suffered as I think they are short staffed. If you don't mind a little longer wait, then there really is no reason why you wouldn't enjoy eating at Baan Thai. read more

In Manhattan for a couple days and decided to try Baan Thai. So glad we did. We ordered Pot Stickers and Drunken Chicken. We ordered Mild Plus as a spice level and we were having it delivered through Eat Street. What a great experience. The heat level was perfect, the jasmine rice light and fluffy, the little touches like the way they repaired the zucchini we added made a smile but the star was the drunken chicken. The sauce, the flavors, done perfectly and it inspired us to want to run home and marinate our chicken in rum. It was delivered hot, on time, with a smile. If there was one downside, I would say the potstickers were a little overdone and a little under filled. But really a minor issue compared to how great the meal was. Don't use the app, call your order in. We've tried a lot of things on the menu and are usually very impressed. Their Thai hot isn't as hot as others, but I'm sure that's due to customer feedback and not ability. First of all, I was glad that another Thai restaurant has opened up here in Manhattan. I haven't gone there to eat because the two times I ate the food prepared by the restaurant, it was a takeaway. The first time I ordered tomyam with squid. Their broth was significantly different from that prepared by Aroy Thai. It reminds me of the almost-divine tomyam from Ruby of Siam (Skokie, IL), but it is still quite different from the tomyam I've tasted on the border of Thailand and Malaysia. I totally enjoyed it. They used real lemon grass and galangal. I also ordered a basil chicken fried rice, which was not really on the menu, but they made it anyway. I was not too impressed. I wish it had been a tad spicier. The second time I ordered the tiger beef and red curry with tofu. I was disappointed with the beef and was not too impressed with the side sauce either. The beef was a bit chewy and almost bland. I reckon it was intentional since it came with a dipping sauce. The red curry was tasty. However, it was packed in a tall styrofoam cup, which could fool us into thinking that there was a lot of it. I think Aroy Thai's portion is bigger. This is a new business in Manhattan, so I hope that they will do better. I may try other dishes on the menu, but maybe not any time soon since they are quite pricey for the portion served. read more

Writing to you again from America's butthole... I felt like Thai for dinner... Looked up this spot and saw it had decent reviews... So I decided to give it a try... My expectations were low... But Kansas has had a few pleasant surprises... I digress... I walk in... It's a small place... And it wasn't super busy... I was starred at by two of the waitresses and NOT greeted... -1 star... I sat down... And it took a about 10 minutes before I was even asked did I want something to drink... Another -1 star... I happened to notice the white patrons were seated immediately when they walked in... (Side note I REALLY hate writing reviews based on race... But racism is still alive and well... So I'll call it like I see it...) Finally placed my order... Drinks came out pretty quick... I had the displeasure of sitting next to these college kids that were so loud with their conversation... College kids suck... Glad I'm not one anymore... Food came... The Pad Thai was ok... I asked for limes... And this chick brought me out ONE slice of lime in her hand... Like put it in a friggin dish! We arrived at 10:45 a.m. this morning. I anticipated that the restaurant would not open until 11:00, so we were pleasantly surprised to find it open. We were promptly seated in a very comfortable booth by a pleasant young woman. At this early before noon, we were the first customers in the store. By 11:30 a.m., a dozen people had come to the restaurant, so I realized it was a popular location. We ordered an appetizer of pot stickers to share. I read a previous review that reported they didn't like the pot stickers because they are deep fried. Yes, I know pot stickers are steamed, but I thought these were the best pot stickers I had every ordered in a restaurant. Perhaps it was the dipping sauce, but these are good. When we visit a new Thai restaurant, one or both of us usually selects the pad thai in order to compare to what we consider to be the best pad thai noodles. We each ordered the pad thai noodles at Baan Thai and agree they are very good, with large cut spring/greens onion pieces, a portion of cabbage and carrots and crushed peanuts. The large portions could easily be shared by two people. We both ordered medium spicy for the pad thai noodles. In my opinion, the medium was closer to what I would describe as hot. I believe that if we had not mentioned a level of spice preference, and had allowed the chef to prepare them for us, then we would have had a better experience with the flavorfulness of the dish. read more

What a cute, quiet place to eat! I came to Manhattan for a veterinary school interview at KSU, and stayed at the hotel next to this restaurant. After the interviews, my companions and I were famished and came here because it was the closet place to eat. I love Thai food and they had never tried it before, but we were all equally pleased with our dishes. I ordered the Pad Thai because it's usually a safe bet at a Thai restaurant you are unfamiliar with and I was very impressed. My more risky friend ordered the Chef's special which was Pumpkin Curry,, and it was fantastic! If I come back to Manhattan for school, I'll definitely eat here again. Happy that another Thai restaurant opened up and a bit less costly than Aroy. The moment after coming in, I noticed the dishes set out were small and I knew that the servings may be smaller single servings. Sure enough they were, so we weren't able to share as much or save some for left overs for lunch tomorrow. Started out safe with our usual pad see ew and pad thai. Not too keen that it wasn't at all spicy although the flavor level was at mild? when we definitely can tolerate a lot of spice. Importantly there was much flavor and was freshly cooked and not dry as to the dishes in Aroy. We also had the soft spring rolls, pretty much similar to the taste of Vietnamese sandwiches, which was very crunchy and fresh. Coming from a tea making background, the Thai iced tea definitely tasted better than I expected, not from a container, but rather as if it were brewed. The fried banana was a nice addition to the meal although, again, the portion seemed quite small compared to other places I've been too. Overall I would definitely still come back because I'm very happy with the quality and taste of the food, but not looking forward to the cost and portion or what you will receive. read more

Solid food and reasonably priced for it's quality. Probably the best ethnic food of any culture that I've found in this town. Green curry came with good heat. Pad Thai was balanced and delicious, though the shrimp were slightly over cooked. The peanut curry was good too. Well prepared and not just like someone mixed peanut butter and coconut milk. Baan Thai is a good place for casual dining. I came here with three friends on a Saturday afternoon. It was busy, but our food came out quickly. We ordered Shrimp Tom Yum, Chicken Pad Thai, Angry Cowboy, and Pork Pumpkin Curry. My favorite was the Pumpkin Curry; it had a nice creamy and spicy flavor. The Tom Yum was bland; I think they added too much water. And the Pad Thai was too liquidy, basically drowning in sauce. I would give us place another shot, maybe try another location. read more

This is one of our favorite restaurants! I was never a fan of Thai food until eating here! My favorite dish is their peanut curry. It's delicious! The pumpkin curry is also good. The garlic shrimp is very flavorful and delicious as well. My favorite appetizers are the crab rangoon the house sampler. The Khao Soi is amazing! Service is always fast and friendly. You can adjust the temperature of the food. I like mine mild and sometimes I feel like they don't pay much attention to the request because it still comes out spicy, but the food is so delicious, I just deal with it. It would be nice if mild were truly mild, but this is still my favorite restaurant in Manhattan. read more

Best Thai food I ever ate! I've had many meals here and have loved everyone. Although Pad Thai is my favorite and recommendation for anyone new and wanting to test out Thai food. It always tastes so fresh and is always clean! The basil fried rice was something that I didn't really care for though, but would prefer it over any other restaurant in the Manhattan area. The prices are amazing for the freshness and quality of food you get! Usually around 10-14$ a plate. I normally get the basil wings as an appetizer and they're TO DIE FOR! My family was in town and we went to Baan Thai for dinner on a Friday evening. The food was good however the service was the biggest disappointment. The lady serving us was not cordial and was unwilling to answer our questions well. Given how disappointed we were with the service we did not care to tip. To add to this, while we were on our way out of the parking lot, this lady from inside the restaurant resorted to showing her middle finger after seeing that we didn't care to tip. This is not the first instance that has occurred at this restaurant. We have heard stories from friends who have spoken ill about the service. This was the first time we experienced this. A friend of mine suggested this place and I'm so glad she did!!! I was a little apprehensive at first because I'm not a fan of spicy food but I tried the pad Thai and the curry chicken and both were very flavorful with out being intolerably or uncomfortably hot. I tried this place while visiting family in Manhattan and the food was out of this world. I tried a little bit of everyone's and everything was amazing. We had the curry puffs and crab rangoon appetizers, both were delicious. I highly recommend the curry puffs. I had the Massaman curry and chicken dish and I have been craving it ever since. It was the perfect amount of spicy with a touch of sweet. The place was very small; so be ready for a wait or get it to go. The service was decent given that they were very busy. It took quite awhile to get drink refills and even when there were open tables it took them forever to seat people. Also the girl who was taking our order walked away in the middle or our order without saying a word. It was very awkward and one of the weirdest things I've experienced (service-wise) in a restaurant. Also I have to agree that this place is very pricey. I live in California and it is on average about $3 more expensive per dish than the 2 thai places I eat at out here. That being said the amazing food was well worth it. read more

There is no denying their food is delicious, and may be the only acceptable Thai food in the area, but still...this gives them no right to take advantage of these facts! These waiters along with the management need to invest in taking organizational behavior classes to learn how to work for the customers and develop some sort of respect for the business they receive from them... After ordering and having the waiter blatantly yell in my husband's face in a foreign language, she stormed to the back of the kitchen to continue yelling! Yelling? YES! The whole restaurant stopped eating to turn towards her commotion! I paid for all meals except his. We left immediately after. Their waiters can take things to a whole other level of disrespect, yuck! Good food-yes! Service? Not so much!! Is the food worth the level of disrespect administered? Of course not. The food is great and has a great balance of all the Thai flavors of sweet spicy sour, etc. You can also get good Thai beer there as well. It is a very small, unfancy place so don't come with a large group of people. If you come during peak dining hours, do expect to wait a while.
