The only disappointment was the fried banana which was basically an egg roll banana and vanilla ice cream covered in chocolate and the service. Probably some of the best Asian food you can find in Manhattan. Most of the curry dishes are a little salty for my tastes, but my go-to dishes are always excellent (basil fried rice, pad thai, black magic). The new restaurant (they took over the old Taco Casa building) is beautifully decorated, but the service has suffered as I think they are short staffed. If you don't mind a little longer wait, then there really is no reason why you wouldn't enjoy eating at Baan Thai. read more

In Manhattan for a couple days and decided to try Baan Thai. So glad we did. We ordered Pot Stickers and Drunken Chicken. We ordered Mild Plus as a spice level and we were having it delivered through Eat Street. What a great experience. The heat level was perfect, the jasmine rice light and fluffy, the little touches like the way they repaired the zucchini we added made a smile but the star was the drunken chicken. The sauce, the flavors, done perfectly and it inspired us to want to run home and marinate our chicken in rum. It was delivered hot, on time, with a smile. If there was one downside, I would say the potstickers were a little overdone and a little under filled. But really a minor issue compared to how great the meal was. Don't use the app, call your order in. We've tried a lot of things on the menu and are usually very impressed. Their Thai hot isn't as hot as others, but I'm sure that's due to customer feedback and not ability. First of all, I was glad that another Thai restaurant has opened up here in Manhattan. I haven't gone there to eat because the two times I ate the food prepared by the restaurant, it was a takeaway. The first time I ordered tomyam with squid. Their broth was significantly different from that prepared by Aroy Thai. It reminds me of the almost-divine tomyam from Ruby of Siam (Skokie, IL), but it is still quite different from the tomyam I've tasted on the border of Thailand and Malaysia. I totally enjoyed it. They used real lemon grass and galangal. I also ordered a basil chicken fried rice, which was not really on the menu, but they made it anyway. I was not too impressed. I wish it had been a tad spicier. The second time I ordered the tiger beef and red curry with tofu. I was disappointed with the beef and was not too impressed with the side sauce either. The beef was a bit chewy and almost bland. I reckon it was intentional since it came with a dipping sauce. The red curry was tasty. However, it was packed in a tall styrofoam cup, which could fool us into thinking that there was a lot of it. I think Aroy Thai's portion is bigger. This is a new business in Manhattan, so I hope that they will do better. I may try other dishes on the menu, but maybe not any time soon since they are quite pricey for the portion served. read more

Writing to you again from America's butthole... I felt like Thai for dinner... Looked up this spot and saw it had decent reviews... So I decided to give it a try... My expectations were low... But Kansas has had a few pleasant surprises... I digress... I walk in... It's a small place... And it wasn't super busy... I was starred at by two of the waitresses and NOT greeted... -1 star... I sat down... And it took a about 10 minutes before I was even asked did I want something to drink... Another -1 star... I happened to notice the white patrons were seated immediately when they walked in... (Side note I REALLY hate writing reviews based on race... But racism is still alive and well... So I'll call it like I see it...) Finally placed my order... Drinks came out pretty quick... I had the displeasure of sitting next to these college kids that were so loud with their conversation... College kids suck... Glad I'm not one anymore... Food came... The Pad Thai was ok... I asked for limes... And this chick brought me out ONE slice of lime in her hand... Like put it in a friggin dish! We arrived at 10:45 a.m. this morning. I anticipated that the restaurant would not open until 11:00, so we were pleasantly surprised to find it open. We were promptly seated in a very comfortable booth by a pleasant young woman. At this early before noon, we were the first customers in the store. By 11:30 a.m., a dozen people had come to the restaurant, so I realized it was a popular location. We ordered an appetizer of pot stickers to share. I read a previous review that reported they didn't like the pot stickers because they are deep fried. Yes, I know pot stickers are steamed, but I thought these were the best pot stickers I had every ordered in a restaurant. Perhaps it was the dipping sauce, but these are good. When we visit a new Thai restaurant, one or both of us usually selects the pad thai in order to compare to what we consider to be the best pad thai noodles. We each ordered the pad thai noodles at Baan Thai and agree they are very good, with large cut spring/greens onion pieces, a portion of cabbage and carrots and crushed peanuts. The large portions could easily be shared by two people. We both ordered medium spicy for the pad thai noodles. In my opinion, the medium was closer to what I would describe as hot. I believe that if we had not mentioned a level of spice preference, and had allowed the chef to prepare them for us, then we would have had a better experience with the flavorfulness of the dish. read more

What a cute, quiet place to eat! I came to Manhattan for a veterinary school interview at KSU, and stayed at the hotel next to this restaurant. After the interviews, my companions and I were famished and came here because it was the closet place to eat. I love Thai food and they had never tried it before, but we were all equally pleased with our dishes. I ordered the Pad Thai because it's usually a safe bet at a Thai restaurant you are unfamiliar with and I was very impressed. My more risky friend ordered the Chef's special which was Pumpkin Curry,, and it was fantastic! If I come back to Manhattan for school, I'll definitely eat here again. Happy that another Thai restaurant opened up and a bit less costly than Aroy. The moment after coming in, I noticed the dishes set out were small and I knew that the servings may be smaller single servings. Sure enough they were, so we weren't able to share as much or save some for left overs for lunch tomorrow. Started out safe with our usual pad see ew and pad thai. Not too keen that it wasn't at all spicy although the flavor level was at mild? when we definitely can tolerate a lot of spice. Importantly there was much flavor and was freshly cooked and not dry as to the dishes in Aroy. We also had the soft spring rolls, pretty much similar to the taste of Vietnamese sandwiches, which was very crunchy and fresh. Coming from a tea making background, the Thai iced tea definitely tasted better than I expected, not from a container, but rather as if it were brewed. The fried banana was a nice addition to the meal although, again, the portion seemed quite small compared to other places I've been too. Overall I would definitely still come back because I'm very happy with the quality and taste of the food, but not looking forward to the cost and portion or what you will receive. read more

Solid food and reasonably priced for it's quality. Probably the best ethnic food of any culture that I've found in this town. Green curry came with good heat. Pad Thai was balanced and delicious, though the shrimp were slightly over cooked. The peanut curry was good too. Well prepared and not just like someone mixed peanut butter and coconut milk. Best Thai food I ever ate! I've had many meals here and have loved everyone. Although Pad Thai is my favorite and recommendation for anyone new and wanting to test out Thai food. It always tastes so fresh and is always clean! The basil fried rice was something that I didn't really care for though, but would prefer it over any other restaurant in the Manhattan area. The prices are amazing for the freshness and quality of food you get! Usually around 10-14$ a plate. I normally get the basil wings as an appetizer and they're TO DIE FOR! The sweetness of the sauce with the freshness of the basil is seriously something magical. read more

Baan Thai is a good place for casual dining. I came here with three friends on a Saturday afternoon. It was busy, but our food came out quickly. We ordered Shrimp Tom Yum, Chicken Pad Thai, Angry Cowboy, and Pork Pumpkin Curry. My favorite was the Pumpkin Curry; it had a nice creamy and spicy flavor. The Tom Yum was bland; I think they added too much water. And the Pad Thai was too liquidy, basically drowning in sauce. I would give us place another shot, maybe try another location. read more

This is one of our favorite restaurants! I was never a fan of Thai food until eating here! My favorite dish is their peanut curry. It's delicious! The pumpkin curry is also good. The garlic shrimp is very flavorful and delicious as well. My favorite appetizers are the crab rangoon the house sampler. The Khao Soi is amazing! Service is always fast and friendly. You can adjust the temperature of the food. I like mine mild and sometimes I feel like they don't pay much attention to the request because it still comes out spicy, but the food is so delicious, I just deal with it. It would be nice if mild were truly mild, but this is still my favorite restaurant in Manhattan. read more

My family was in town and we went to Baan Thai for dinner on a Friday evening. The food was good however the service was the biggest disappointment. The lady serving us was not cordial and was unwilling to answer our questions well. Given how disappointed we were with the service we did not care to tip. To add to this, while we were on our way out of the parking lot, this lady from inside the restaurant resorted to showing her middle finger after seeing that we didn't care to tip. This is not the first instance that has occurred at this restaurant. We have heard stories from friends who have spoken ill about the service. This was the first time we experienced this. Do not eat here if you want good service you are only lucky if u have had good service here the food is always different the pad Thai is soggy noodles and taste like ketchup! They threw away our food after we packed it up to go we all forgot it distracted with the kids thinking each other took it! 1 minute down the street remembered and went back! They told us sorry we threw it away I said we just left and this was over 100 dollars tonight with family of six we always take home food and take to work the next day for lunch! We paid for it! The two women always there r always in a bad mood and we over looked it several times since my daughter is pregnant and craving this! They are always out of sticky rice! But tonight was most upsetting they threw away two entire entrees and several appetizer left overs and rice! Didn't put it aside and see if we returned they judged us based on others as well saying everyone leaves it! I said we are not everyone! We never purposely leave food and they offered us nothing at all in fact walked away from us after saying sorry we threw it away! They all look like they have no souls to be honest they look at you empty like the devil took their souls!! This is how ugly and rude I see them! Food wasn't good and the service was horrible. Ordered: pad thai - noodles too soggy; tom yum soup - not sour enough, too sweet; crispy garlic shrimp - just ok. It's the service that prompted me to give this establishment a 1 star. The waitress barely waited on us. She took our order and when the food came, she just dumped it on the table and didn't bother to ladle the soup into our bowls unlike all other Thai establishments I've been to. When we were done, we asked for boxes for the leftovers, and again, she just dumped it on the table and didn't bother to transfer the leftovers into the boxes. Then she disappeared again. When she finally showed up, we had to ask her for a bag with which to carry the leftover boxes; she didn't even think that we'd need one. The original one near Leavenworth is much better if you can go. This one just seems overwhelmed, understaffed, and not worth the risk anymore. It's hit and miss.
