Came to this humble looking bar and grill in Coal City. It looks like a place where locals hang out. Babe's Tap & Grill is one of the few locally owned restaurants around here. Most of the rest are chains, with the few others being worn out looking. The prices are pretty okay, so it's good enough to come back to some time. Basic looking for a neighborhood bar. It's one of a few that are downtown. This is actually right next to another one. Maybe drinking is the only thing to do around here. One can do that here and eat too. It's about $4 for a basic cocktail. There's a decent amount of liquors including a few whiskeys. It's about $4 for an appetizer. Tater tots are a good choice for any occasion. They were always known for the best burgers- haven't been there in a while. Went for a late lunch and all of our burgers were over cooked, buns were hard and dry, and the fries were hard like they were held from the lunch crowd. They need to retrain or hire a new cook. Food is awesome! I always get the hoagie and fries, they never disappoint. The service is always great. The girls are always very nice. The service is always pretty quick too. They only take cash so, know that in advance. The prices are very fair though. 4 of us ate for $41 tonight. You get plenty of food and it's good. Definitely worth it. We came here for Father's Day lunch. The Bloody Mary's are phenomenal--perfect spice and comes with cheese, salami, olive, lime, and pickle. I recommend ordering a large bc they go down quickly! We had the Cajun cheese curds for an app and they were delicious! I had the ribeye sandwich, which was good, came on garlic bread, and my boyfriend's son said the sub sandwich was tasty. My boyfriend for the double cheeseburger--holy cow, that thing was HUGE! Definitely worth the price. I only docked a star because service was pretty slow, both ordering and getting food. I don't hail from Coal City, but I frequent the Land of Coalers because my boyfriend is from there, and his family & friends are still there. To be honest, I'd love to settle there one day. But, I digress. I like Babe's, it's a good place. Definitely has the "hometown crowd," thing goin' on, but not enough to make you feel out-of-place or unwelcome. I've been a few times before, but over Memorial Weekend/Week 2014 I was there twice - once Sunday (at 10:45am open, haha) and for a friend's birthday party/dinner on Wednesday. Wednesday was the first time I had eaten there, and to be honest, I didn't expect much. I ordered the current special, a Mad Cow Burger, and the name WAS off putting, but the toppings sold me - pepperjack cheese, jalapenos, & bacon. YUMMO in my face, let's do this. I expected regular bar food, or worse, but it was actually really awesome! Cooked perfectly, tater tots were crispy, and everything was correct. I'll eat there lots, I'm sure. The Blood Marys are a hit, come in a small or large, but I don't drink 'em, so I can't review personally. However, everyone I know who drinks Bloodies, LOVES THESE. So, ya know, there's that. Would have been 5 stars, but the day we were there, they closed the food early (grill at 8:20, menu states open until 9:00p, fryer at same time, while menu says 11:00p), because the girl manning the food area appeared to be drowning. #GetItTogether But, if that's all the bad I have, oh well, it happens. read more

The food has really gone downhill. This was always one of our go-to bar food places. The cheese is always cooked out of the motz sticks and cheese curds. Fries are always over done. Seems like everything is just way over cooked and not nearly as good as it used to be. read more

Was worried at first because we had our kids with us on a Sunday afternoon but turns out it is a nice place for kids too! Bloody Marys were awesome!!!! Not as good as the ratings. Burgers were OK but not as good as bars like Ebbeys which are made fresh and not frozen patties. Fries were delish! Really enjoyed the thick and flakey cod sandwich and the kids enjoyed the sub sandwich that had a good portion of meat and cheese on it. read more

I recently moved back to my native Chicagoland after a 6-year stint in San Diego. If San Diego has any culinary speciality, I'd have to say it is the hamburger. Practically anywhere in San Diego you can find a solid burger. I couldn't say the same about Chicago... and I looked far and wide. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the delicious burger served at Babe's Tapin a tiny little town 40 miles south of Chicago. The burger doesn't put fancy or exotic ingredients on it. Where do I start? How about the food, it's says "best burger in town" on the menu. If this is the best how bad must the rest of the town be? Words that come to mind are bland, flavorless, devoid of all seasoning. I don't know what the trend in this town is with the removal of all seasonings but I am not on this band wagon. The fries where even worse, over cooked and again ZERO seasoning. They give you a side container on coleslaw with the basket meal, I almost had two bites. I would rather you just don't serve it if you really don't want people to taste it. I can see this is a place to come for a cold beer and some good conversation, but if you want to eat, go to mcdonalds, save yourself some money and enjoy average. read more

What has happened here?? Food has always been consistently good. However in the past two weeks, I have gotten food and it has been terrible. First time ice cold fries, second time ice cold fries and less than half what you normally get. Seriously we all got about 10 skinny fries and our sandwiches were burnt. Black on one side. I love coming here but the one thing that turns me off are the bartenders.. Some of them have the worst attitude I have ever dealt with at a bar and some aren't so bad. If I could give 0 stars, I would. The place was barely even half full (and it's tiny to begin with) and we had to wait 1/2 hour for our food. 1 girl at the bar and 1 girl making the food. If it's going to be that slow, hire another person! And then we got our food. I ordered jalapeno poppers for $5.75, so I figured I'd get a pretty good amount. I ended up getting 4 of the lousiest jalapeno poppers I've EVER had. First of all, 4 overcooked poppers for $5.75?? RIP!! And then I bit into it and the jalapeno tastes like shitty tap water!
