This is one of those spots that makes you feel lucky to have something so cool and unique in your neighborhood. Except I'm not that lucky. However, this is a great place to visit if you're on vacation in OBX (like me) and looking to treat yourself to a bit of decadence. Or not even. You can browse the gorgeous selection of wines on one side of the shop, buy cheeses from all over the world on the other side, or just stop in for a sandwich. And speaking of sandwiches, their selection is vast and named after different places in the area (which I think is a fun touch.) For example, I ordered a Pine Island - smoked turkey, ham, bacon, smoked Gouda, lettuce, tomato and mayo. It was great. My boyfriend got a classic French dip and loved it. The beef au jus was flavorful and definitely not on the salty side as many tend to be. And I found myself dipping my sandwich in it too - no shame here. Nothing about this establishment is pretentious either. You think fancy wine and fancy cheese and you might paint a picture of something obnoxious but Bacchus is just... cool. And inviting. The owners run the register and make sandwiches alongside their employees and treat customers like friends. The shop is a reflection of their passions and they represent the shop well. Awesome side facts: They have daily wine tastings - six wines for $5 per person. You can pick up delicious chocolates and yummy accompaniments to go with your wine and cheese. Absolutely love this place. The current owners have had it now for one season and did a great job. Any of the sandwiches and wraps are great. I love the Chablis and a good steady ole friend the French Dip. At some point I just want to go through every sandwich on the board. Order your sandwich, grab a beer from the cooler, enjoy the great sandwich, take a bottle of wine and some dinner fixings home with you and you are set! I am a little bit of a food junkie so I love Bacchus. They have a very large selection of wine and a knowledgeable staff that helped me find the best wine in my price range. The cheeses and deli selection are great but I prefer the fresh cut steaks - they are delicious. One thing not mentioned in other reviews are the wine tastings. I'm not sure what the schedule is but we went on a Tuesday and got a good tasting, education on the wines, and then they had a huge selection of food paired with the wine. Serendipitously came in here over the weekend and we were thrilled to find it! The owner Kim was generous and easy going. She explained everything for our tasting and was patient. So patient that when a cantankerous customer came in demanding wine- he walks in the door, "Chardonnay." And Kim goes on to explain her offerings including providing a tasting and the man didn't so much as say thank you. I had to bite my tongue. The owner and her mom are insanely amazing. We talked to the mom who said her daughter decided to quit her corporate job and move to OBX and follow her passion of food and wine. They've built up a nice wine and food shop plus deli/sweets. You feel like you're important as they take the time to talk to you and answer questions. Cannot recommend enough. This is a treat since Boar's Head seems to be the premium deli meat lately even though it can be bought at the grocery store. Went here during a week long vacation in Corolla. We had a group of 6 people go for a tasting; 6 wines paired with 6 different foods. It was amazing! 3 whites and 3 reds paired with fig and brie, Greek pasta salad, shrimp cocktail with wasabi horseradish, mini filet strips on a crustini with homemade horseradish, red pepper poppers stuffed with aged cambazola (not sure on spelling) and dark chocolate made with cherries and chiles. Everything homemade and fresh and paired nicely with each wine. We sampled wines from the "one hope" brand; each bottle's proceeds go to a different cause. Awesome place in Corolla (by the Food Lion) if you're looking for an amazing wine, craft beer and gourmet food selection. Sad to see how far this place has gone downhill. Has been one of our favorite Corolla lunch spots for 14 years. Under new ownership now and is unrecognizable. Menu is changed and blase'. My wife and I ordered a sandwich and a salad. We each took one bite and decided to leave immediately. Paid my check and will never be back. Both tasted like we could have gotten them at Subway. (My wife actually thought the Subway comparison was too much of a compliment) Certainly not the delightful experience we have come to expect in our decade plus of patronizing what used to be one of our Corolla mainstays. This has been our first stop two years in a row while waiting for our rental to be ready. The sandwhich selection is great and always tasty and generous. The wine selection goes without saying...they had some nice beers also. It was not crowded at all at 11am on a Saturday...there is limited seating. We comfortably sat our party of 9. Absolutely delicious sandwiches and wine. It is a little cafe style place (not a bistro) there is no real waiter service - not really a restaurant at all. Gets busy often - expect to wait for some things! But, its worth it. My only wish on this visit was that the wine bar was open and they had a few more accessories and food for sale. read more
