This is one of my brother's favorite bakeries, so he brought us some goodies. Everything was fantastic, nice and fresh tasting. Great ingredients, zero bloating or heartburn. We had some croissant type of raspberry pastry, but the crust was crispy and perfectly sweet. The filling was like sandwich spread made of crushed pistachio goodness! Then we had some muffin looking pastry and that was also kinda crispy with a sweet coating. This delicacy was filled with finely chopped apple pieces. It was delicious reminded me of a baklava and an apple pie fusion. We also tried these sourdough and chocolate chip little rolls. I believe, not really sure on the bread but it had chocolate chips and it was topped with sea salt. The combination worked, I thought they were tasty. We also got a chocolate sourdough bread. When we arrived on a Saturday morning, Backhaus had a line out the door! Luckily it moved quickly - the staff were super efficient, but there wasn't much time to look at the pastries/menu when ordering. I hastily chose the Everything Croissant Bowl, which was cream cheese-filled and topped with chives. For drinks, the cashier recommended the Cinnamon Girl. Both items were delicious! The texture of the Croissant Bowl was perfect, with all the best flavors of an everything bagel. The Cinnamon Girl was a little sweet for me, but super tasty and strong. My boyfriend got a Speck & Egg Croissant Bowl, which he said was fantastic. The space itself was very small and crowded, so ordering to-go seems like the move. Backhaus is the most famous place for croissants in the Peninsula these days. We're often in the area and usually there's a small line out the door, but it does move fast. The chocolate croissants are very good, and the pistachio ones are beautiful. Almond croissants are good, a bit sweeter with less almond aroma but very fresh. a pretty average cafe to me, i ordered the dulce leche kouign-amann, and iced latte with cardamom syrup. i felt like the kouign-amann was too hard and overly wayy too sweet. felt more bready than layered and flaky and it felt like i was choking on sugar. the latte was also nothing special, and there's not much seating outside either. read more

I had the savory hand pie, which was a hand-held pastry with a tomato-based filling. Tasted very refreshing and light. My friends ordered this raspberry pistachio croissant which was phenomenal. I went here for the first time recently. It has a minimalist decor and the pastries looked delicious. I ordered an almond croissant. So far, so good. Then I asked if it could be cut in half. The man behind the counter said, "No," in a cold tone. His expression was the worst part. It was like he was daring me to say something. I took my purchase and thanked him. No response from him. First, it was $7.75, which I thought was on the high side. But, it was one of the best almond croissants I have had. It was flaky, and the frangipane filling was amazing. I will return when I am in the area, but I will come early because they sell out of pastries quickly, I strongly urge the manager and owner to hire some gracious, well-mannered employees. Yelp lead me here. I wanted sourdough bread. Got here 2:30 pm Sunday. Not much left. The choices: dense seeded bread, asiago pepper, or honey oat. Chose the honey oat. I can taste the sourdough. Came in the other day for breakfast. The San Mateo location is smaller than the Burlingame location, so the selection is not as vast (what I was told), but what they did serve, well, it was all quite tasty. Pros- they know pastry dough... from croissants to apple turnovers, everything was super buttery and flaky! Their chocolate chip cookies are massive and very yummy... not too sweet, actually, they were the perfect blend of sweet with the salt for a tiny bit of savory. My brother had one of their sandwiches and that was also very good. Cons- because San Mateo is a smaller store, they don't have as many options and they do sell out! If you're lucky enough to get there when the shelves are full, have fun! After eating the turnover, I went back in and bought their remaining cookies and a few other treats, loved each item! I consider myself lucky to have such a great bakery only a few blocks away! I usually go with the raspberry pistachio or chocolate croissants which are both excellent. I've also picked up a loaf of seeded sourdough which goes great with chicken or tuna salad. There can be a line when the place first opens, but it moves quickly and everybody inside is very helpful and friendly. I tried to like this place and gave it a shot 5 times since it's on my way back home from work. I've seen some of the workers giving attitude to customers when they were just asking questions. That rubbed me the wrong way. Is it just me or is the coffee mediocre? What a cute bakery in the heart of downtown San Mateo! Plenty of street parking, we came on a Sunday so parking was free. There is seating in the front outside and inside, but the back outside was so zen! We enjoyed our savory pie, chocolate milk bun, and chocolate loaf sitting outside. We got here on a Sunday around noon to get some of this bread! We procured one of the last few chocolate sourdoughs, so note that you should get here early to ensure they still have what you want. We got the Morning Bun, Heavy-Seeded Rye loaf, and Chocolate Sourdough. Morning Bun (5/5): This is kind of like a gourmet cinnamon roll. The bun itself is pillowy soft yet slightly chewy -- it'd be perfect as a tasty pillow for a morning nap! The cinnamon flavors mildly greet your tastebuds while the taste of citrus zest zap your palette for a bright zing of acidity. I like the fine sugar sprinkled on top as well. Heavy-Seeded Rye Loaf (4/5): The loaf is so heavy I could seriously do some bicep curls with this thing! It's dense with a nice chew, exuding earthy notes of wheat and a slight sourness. The best part is all the different seeds baked into the bread -- a variety and amount to put even the best bird feeds on the market to shame! The seeds add an enjoyable crunch and non-uniform texture to each bite. Chocolate Sourdough (5/5): One bite into this loaf of sourdough made me wiggle my ears in chocolatey pleasure! Its hard exterior shell protects the soft, spongy interior. The first bite kicks you in the mouth with a slobbery smooch of deep dark chocolate flavor paired with the yeasty sourness of lactic acid bacteria. I'd like to make a clam chowder bread bowl out of this thing! There isn't much seating inside, but they do have an outdoor backyard area with seating to enjoy your bread and drinks. I'm a functional medicine nutritionist so I have a very fine tuned pallet for the most part their products are high-quality even though they contain gluten and unless you have celiac or gluten/gliadin intolerance occasional gluten is fine I wish they had some of their specialty items like the sauerkraut pretzel during the week and they had a better system for ordering and/or order ahead and pick up I will not stand in line I just don't have time for that I really hope they work on a system where you can order off your phone and pick off off the shelf they could have it alphabetized on a shelf where you pick up your product w/your name on it this would be more efficient they could do more business People like me just drive-by saying there's no way I'm standing in that line ! every time they have that line they lose my business and I'm sure I'm not the only one there's just gotta be a better way?? In addition we got the speck & egg, Kouign Amann, and the mortadella sandwich. The speck & egg was another favorite. The kouign amann was a little too sweet and the glaze was hard. My friend and I live about an hour away from each other, and so San Mateo was a good halfway point to meet. She had seen Backhaus at some farmers markets in the past and so suggested to meet here. This coffee shop reminds me of the really hip and nice coffee shops in the city. There is not much indoor seating - I think just a couple of tables, but there is a patio area all the way in the back of the shop with a handful of chairs and tables that has a really nice ambiance. We were really looking forward to ordering some of their pastries but as we arrived an hour before their closing time, we unfortunately saw an empty pastry display case. Disappointing experience. The line management was a mess -- everyone queued in a single line for one counter, but when we got to the front, we were suddenly told to order bread with one employee and drinks with another. This caused confusion and delays for no reason. The staff were visibly impatient, especially the middle-aged man behind the counter. He couldn't remember our order, kept asking us to repeat things, and then insisted that the four of us pay together. When we asked to pay separately (as any normal café would allow), he ignored our requests and even hinted that we were "wasting time" and blocking customers behind us. Ironically, every other customer had been paying individually. What makes this worse is that the service and attitude do not match the pricing or the interior décor. The café looks premium and charges premium prices, but the way customers are treated feels unprofessional and even rude. I ordered the Almond Croissant and was impressed, it was flaky, sweet, and a great size. If you like sweet croissants, definitely give this one a try! I also got an iced Americano, which was just okay. I was hoping to get some work done there, but indoor seating was limited and was noted to be more for people on their breaks. Thankfully, there's a nice outdoor patio in the back with plenty of seating, and a few people were working out there too. Just a heads-up: no Wi-Fi, which I didn't realize until I got there. This popular bakery in San Mateo made for a great breakfast stop. We arrived on a Sunday morning with a line formed along the block. The line moved quickly, however, so it didn't feel like too long of a wait. The back patio was all full, but the table in front was available, so we had our breakfast amid the line of customers. I really enjoyed the Strawberrg Kouign Amann, this pastry was very delicious and satisfied my morning hunger before going on a hike. The San Mateo Fog was an Earl Grey iced latte, it was decent, but it felt a little water downed, which masked some of the flavor. My biggest regret was not getting here earlier. I got here around 12:30 on a Friday and there were just a handful of pastries left. I got a croissant ($5.50) and it was amazing! Super crispy and flakey but still soft and plush inside with a rich buttery flavor. The epi baguette ($7.50) was really good too and I ordered a side of butter ($2) to go with it. I've been to backhaus multiple times - to try the pistachio raspberry croissant, but they always sell out so quickly! This time I arrived at 7:30 in the morning and scored one! It simply tastes amazing - the tang from the raspberry balances out the richness from the pistachios. The croissant has a great flakey texture. The kuoign Amann was good- perfect crunch of sugar on the outside to the flakiness inside. However I wish the black sesame flavour was stronger - the kumquat jam overruled the sesame. I've also tried their regular croissants and it's the best in the bay (even better than the real popular bakeries in the city!) - not too buttery but super flaky. 100% RECOMMENDED! The outdoor seating area is a nice spot to enjoy the baked goods and read a book, especially in the mornings when it's quiet. read more
