This place is by far the MOST unethical place I've ever had the disservice of attending. I began…read moretaking jiu jitsu in September religiously, and the morals of the gym have steadily declined ever since. The owner sneakily switched and canceled class times without talking to clients (3 times in 2 weeks), brought in unqualified coaches who are known to have poor reputations around the community, AND failed to tell the jiu jitsu instructor that class times were canceled/changed - leaving both students and parents confused and frustrated on the status of the classes they invest hundreds of dollars to take on a monthly basis. Once I was made privy to these changes, I took the liberty to take my frustrations to the owner's father, Kent, who runs the front desk. I explained that I felt that his business practices were unprofessional and unethical and he proceeded to raise his voice and verbally attack me in front of his paying customers. I highly discourage anyone from even considering attending this place. They run a poor business and don't value their students or the people that work for them.

There is no respect or loyalty with their clients or instructors. Without warning or discussion they eliminated my jiu-jitsu program and eliminated the boxing program. They brought in some shady guy who has burned several other gyms in Stockton, Concord, and San Jose to run a striking program. The martial arts community is small and this Tony guy they now have is not trustworthy. I am now training with Darcio Lira Jiu-jitsu in Livermore and would strongly encourage anyone reading this to not trust this place. You are not respected here as a client and you will not be respected here as an instructor.

We've tried other dojos, but we came back because of the quality of the training and the strong focus on safety. Training can be challenging at times, but the kids truly enjoy it and everyone is very welcoming. I really appreciate that the students are taught to help and take care of new students. It sets a great example and teaches respect instead of bullying.

This dojo also learns more on the traditional side of jiu-jitsu where the kids learn the Japanese terms for the moves, the history of jiu-jitsu and "the way of the samurai" philosophy. Stripe ceremonies are done twice a year and are not only based on quality/frequency spent on in class, but dedication, discipline, respect, plus good character on AND off the mat and more. At Darcio Lira, you truly EARN your stripe and your belt. They also take life skills and character-building seriously (like how to handle disagreements, respect at home/for others, self-respect, saftey in public, etc). It's a great place and we are very greatful to be a part of the Darcio Lira family. My daughter has turned into a very confident, technical and competent fighter.

Joining anything new can be intimidating, especially a fitness class. However, everyone, and I mean EVERYONE is SO nice and welcoming - Koa staff (morning and night), all the different coaches and other people attending the class. Anyone with any level of experience is welcome. You can ask anybody for tips and help, and they will patiently guide you! I usually join Boxing and Muay Thai. I have yet to join Yoga, and I'm trying Jiu-Jitsu for the first time ever tomorrow :)

I think there are too many kids with different status (beginner vs advanced) and age ranges 4-16. When they broke into drills there was an instructor showing the 6 (ish) year olds the drill and then walked over to the older kids with another instructor. I was baffled. How do you leave little ones to do a partnered hitting drill by themselves? There were 5-6 instructors but they seemed to talk amongst themselves and not demonstrate or monitor the kids. Sandy stated they have students completing their degrees, who need hours coaching. So basically, volunteers who don't care. I'll keep my money. They need to reevaluate their business model and hire dedicated coaches.
