Went here on a Saturday afternoon to celebrate a birthday with a few friends. The location was centralized so that was nice but it was very busy. First, the pros.. throwing axes is fun! They gave us good tutorials and a couple fun games to play. They had to show us a few times the correct posture but were super patient. Rogue was super patient and she was so upbeat that it almost made me tired. Perfect for this type of atmosphere!! The cons.. while the facility was nice, it was a little cramped, seemed a bit disorganized and the food and drink selection was rather limited. Glad that they're trying to have these things, but it seemed a little lack luster. They also double up coaches to groups.. so Rogue had our group of 4, but she also had a group of like 15 or so right next to us. Kind of made us feel like we were hung out to dry as they needed more attention. Rogue was great about still trying to get to us, but kind of made it feel like we didn't get the full experience. As a side note, I also don't like that when you make a reservation that your money is essentially non refundable, you're only issued a credit for another time. It doesn't start you out with the right vibe.. This was such a fun date night. Easy enough for a beginner to pick up right away. You'll have a coach to help you land the axe and show you different throwing techniques. I found the two handed throw to be easier than the one hand technique. There's a waiting area and ping pong if you come for a walk-in and need to wait until a lane opens up. The waiting area has a bar with a few beer/cider/wine selections and some snacky foods available for purchase. Parking was really easy, nice sized lot. We hosted a birthday celebration at Bad Axe last weekend and it was super fun for everyone in our group from age 15 to 70!! Kevin was our coach/host and he was awesome from the minute we walked thru the doors. You have to do an electronic waiver as part of check-in, and they offer beverages including beer and wine and cocktails. I admit I was pretty nervous about the safety aspect, but Kevin explained the rules very clearly which was great, and once we were there we didn't have any scares or nervousness for our entire 90 minutes. Kevin was entertaining and funny (ah, the puns!), but he also has this uncanny ability to tell you how to adjust your throws so you can get better and better. It's like he has slow motion replay in his recall and he can tell you how to adjust your footing or your elbow or your distance - this was really helpful for our beginner group. He also setup a fun competition (we did older peeps versus kids) and kept score and cheered and it was a blast. We also opted to try knife throwing for the last 30 minutes which was totally different but still fun. I think next time if everyone is inexperienced I'd do axe throwing the whole time so we could have focused on our skills and technique. We found easy and cheap parking nearby on the weekend, but I think they might even validate at the City Center ramp (but you should ask to be sure). I've been axe throwing at a few different places now, and it's always fun! Bad axe also has a big parking lot that's free and you can bring in outside food (but not drinks), so it's a great way to spend an evening with friends!! It was $27 per person per hour which is a bit pricier than I've paid elsewhere ($17 in Duluth was the best price), but the bar prices are pretty reasonable! It's also nice that each "bay" is two lanes/targets so that you can throw at the same time as someone else in your group and "compete". However, the axes and their grips weren't the best quality compared to a few other places I've gone, but I'm also not a good enough axe thrower for it to really matter! The biggest spots for improvement are noise and spacing. Now I'm aware the core of Bad Axe is throwing axes in a warehouse which is inherently loud, but when I visited they were replacing the targets in every other "lane" on a Friday night, and the drills going constantly 15 feet away was super loud while receiving instructions and talking with friends. It would be hard to do a birthday party or corporate event because of that. The spacing of lanes is also precarious. There are a lanes back to back as well as near the bar, so leaving or going to the bar requires a lot of attentiveness and other throwers pausing to let you through. Once you get warmed up with your axe throwing, I would totally recommend some of the games they recommend on their website. We played Humans and Zombies and it was great! read more

I went for a first date here, this is a very good place for a first date! It was very warehouse-y and hard to find in the dark, but we finally figured it out. Wonderful experience today throwing axes! This was my second time there and it was super fun! I got better this round which always helps! . Our throwing coach, Wyatt, was super cool and he gave us pointers as needed to get better and led the games! It's a cool experience and we had a ton of fun! If you're a first timer- i don't know if you can- but try asking for Wyatt as a coach. The coaches definitely make a difference in how you throw! . Went here with a family group for axe throwing. I've done it before, and I had to compete with a retired firefighter who I'm sure has been trained on axe throwing, or at least using an axe as a job skill. It was a great time. Instructor Mike (not his real name) did a great job of coaching folks on the fine details of axe throwing. They have two sizes of axe so that you can select the size that matches your style. I suppose 10 years from now it will be like the bowling alley with shoes and ten different sizes of axes, but for now it's a charming activity that can theoretical split your head open. Terrible service. I have been to 4 other axe throwing places in the past couple years, and was very surprised by the way this company treats their customers. The location is very nice, awesome facilities, and decent equipment (some of the axe handles were crumbling). But we were treated poorly. We walked in, they told us we needed to wait 40 minutes since they had another group, and talked to us like they were unhappy we came. After waiting 75 minutes, we were given a bay. When we left, we paid, and then got a phone call accusing us of running away without payment. The employees did not communicate with each other. read more

I really wanted to like Bad Axe. I was a regular at an Axe Throwing concept in my old town of Kansas City, so I am a big fan of Axe Throwing! Having moved up to Minneapolis this past month, we were invited by family to go with them for their first visit to Bad Axe. Unfortunately, it will be our last, and for good reason. 1. First and foremost, this facility is extremely dangerous. They tried to pack too many lanes into one space. This results in not enough room between where people are throwing, and people walking behind them because the distance to the wall is too narrow. We watched almost 6 different people take an axe to the face when someone drew the axe back to start their throw, as someone decided to walk behind them. (At other concepts we've been to, you start your throw in a more enclosed lane to prevent anyone from getting hurt.) 2. The lanes are too short, and they have dividers every 2 lanes instead of 1. Why does this matter? We had between 5-7 axes bounce all the way back to the thrower, or the person throwing in the lane next to us, and hit them in the foot. Thank god we were wearing closed toed shoes. The furthest an axe bounced back was 4 feet behind where we were throwing. Completely unacceptable. When I brought this to the only employee we saw all nights attention, he said "That's why we have you sign all those waiver's when you walk in the door." 3. If you make a reservation online, you are not guaranteed a lane. We arrived for our 5:30 reservation, only to find they gave it away, even though we arrived on time. They said all their reservations for all their locations go through one central reservation hub, and that they can't control who's lanes get cancelled or not if they overbook. We waited and were then placed on the next available lane. 4. There is no where to sit or to put your things. After arriving they took us to our lane. We booked 3 hours of Axe Throwing, but how are you supposed to relax and enjoy yourself when you have to put your belongings on the ground, and stand the whole time? 5. After complaining to who appeared to be the only person working multiple times, who was also teaching a bunch of different groups how to throw, he got defensive and tried arguing how safe it was, literally as an axe bounced all the way back near his foot. He even overheard me complaining to my friend about how one of the axe's heads was sliding down the handle, and decided to butt in and tell me how that is normal and totally safe. 6. After an hour, we decided it wasn't worth the safety risk, nor were we going to stand for the next 3 hours even if it was. We went to cash out and the employee told us we had to pay for the 3 hours, even though the first hour we couldn't play because they gave our lane away (he acknowledged this and offered nothing), and we only played for 1 hour. 7. I emailed Bad Axe corporate about my experience and issues on 11/3/18 and received an automatic response that I would hear from them in 48 hours. It has now been double that with no response. I let them know that I won't leave any negative reviews if they make it right, but they didn't care to even respond, so here we are. I highly recommend Axe Throwing as it's a lot of fun. I would just look elsewhere. I'm honestly surprised that Code Enforcement hasn't shut them down for the safety issues, or for allowing Bring Your Own Beer even though the city told them they couldn't. (The employee who argued with me said he was allowing people to do it because of people being mad at them for advertising that they could, even though they couldn't.) read more

We came here for my friend's birthday party. It was a blast! I had been axe throwing once before in Denver, but this place was much nicer. It is in a large warehouse type building. You rent a stall and have a coach that teaches you technique and keeps score. He was very helpful. My favorite game was knockout where you go head to head with members of the opposing team. Their website states they have a full service bar and bistro with a "kick ass wine and beer menu". When we went there was no wine and limited beer options. We had even called before hand to see what their "bar" was and were told it was stocked with both. No where even close to being a full service bar though. Food menu was also quite limited. We were told over the phone they had had pizza and other snacks/bar food. Almost everything other than cheese pizza was crossed out when we went. I had called and specifically asked if we could bring our own food items in and was told no that was not allowed. Oddly enough several reviews below state that is not the case and we saw people with coolers at the venue. Overall it's cool to throw an axe but if you're looking for a group activity that feels like a well put together night out with food and drinks, Top Golf or bowling is a better bet. read more

I went for their open house and the staff was so friendly and helpful and they show you the proper techniques so you don't injure yourself (or others). There are plenty of stalls set up so my friend and I walked in and had one to ourselves. Throwing the axes is harder than it looks but you get the hang of it, I promise! After we mastered the basics the staff came back around and taught us trick shots and I definitely felt like a badass when I could throw the axe underhanded. tl;dr: Ask for a quote and clarify pricing. Do not book for a group, you are losing value. Avoid Axel. Before I get to the 1-star rating reason, here are the things that they did well: The facility was clean, their equipment was, for the most part, undamaged, sharp and secure. The prices for the food weren't absurdly high, either, though I didn't order so I can't say anything about portions. The value of this experience is high if you go as a walk-in. Most of the coaches seemed very enthusiastic and helpful, though they weren't assigned to me so I couldn't really tell. Why my group's experience was so negative: 1. Cheap policy of shoving an entire group, no matter the size, into one caged off area with two lanes. 2. Uncooperative, unenthusiastic, uninterested employee that served as our "coach" for the duration of two hours. 3. Higher prices than advertised that, net, were not worth the "specialized attention" that our coach supposedly provided for us. To expand: Their policy online is very clear that a group booking gets you two reserved targets, which means two lanes. Looking at the online price, that's $40 per person, and you get two hours. Meanwhile, if you walk-in after confirming availability, the price listed online is $25 per person per hour, which comes out to $50 per two hours. While the group option seems more cost-effective at first glance, do not underestimate their means of wringing a profit out of you. When you only have two lanes, your active time is cut down exponentially. The group option is 8 people minimum; with only two lanes, you can expect to get 25% the active time compared to someone who walked in and paid the $50 for two hours. 25% of 2 hours, by the way, is only 30 minutes. You're paying $40 for 30 minutes worth of axe throwing, while the walk-in is paying $50 for 120 minutes. For the walk-ins, you can just pick up more lanes because you're not technically in one group. And if there aren't enough lanes for each of you to have one, then you can share with just one or two others. My group was 13 people in two lanes. 120min/6 people in one lane = 20 minutes of active throwing per person. What incredible value /s. Their response to our complaint was that we are getting a dedicated coach who gives us real-time feedback and that without this coach we wouldn't be able to do any of their "fun activities," according to the one assigned to my group. Here's the catch: the walk-ins next to us didn't have a dedicated coach, but there was still a coach who told them the exact same information that our coach told us at the beginning, two-handed throw, one-handed throw, how to remove the axe safely, and other safety procedures that they obviously would tell anyone who sets foot inside of the lanes. The, "fun activities"? We played HORSE (the basketball game) backwards. We tried to get a higher score than the other "team," we tried to get a higher score faster, then we tried to hit a specific ring a specific number of times. All the while our "coach" just changed a number or made a tally on a whiteboard that was available to use whether or not you had a coach. So incredibly innovative, I have no idea how we would have managed that on our own /s. And finally, our coach was just unimpressive. Axel clearly did not want to be there, as she never stopped looking at her phone, waiting for those precious text message bubbles to pop up. Her explanations of how to handle the axes were very half-hearted and not in-depth enough, and we were led to believe this was because she couldn't really do it herself because none of the axes she threw at the target in any of her demos stuck. Her dedicated coaching consisted of little more than warning us that she would kick us off in the event that someone threw too hard, telling us to step forward to let someone pass, or just grimacing as we missed the target. I can say with confidence that she was a subpar representation of what this location had to offer in terms of customer service, because the walk-in group next to us had a temporary coach that was so enthusiastic that I stopped throwing for a while just to hear her explain how to hold my arm, at what angle, when to release, what alternative methods there were, and how to quickly remove the axe from the board without "wiggling" it over and over again. I only wish they had reserved a competent coach for our group event. Last thoughts: The experience of throwing an axe is great. Their target ranges are safe and secure. If you want to try out axe throwing, this may well be the spot for you. Just clarify the pricing, don't reserve for a large group, and don't get matched with Axel. Oh and try to avoid the red-handled axes, my group found that the bearded ones had a better weight distribution, easier to get the rotation right. read more

At first I thought it was going to be a lot of picking up axes from the floor, but was pleasantly surprised that after some wonderful coaching from Nic, everyone in a party was sticking their axes close to 90% of the time. Safety is the name of the game at Bad Axe, something the coach continuously reminded us of during the evening. After the initial coaching we were provided practice time, then were split up into team and played 4 different types of matches. Our Coach fit right in with our group, keeping things lively and fun. Never go as a group. The service was incredibly disappointing. 12 people prepaid $40 each for a group event and they stuffed all of us into only one lane. each person threw only a few times all night. The rest of the venue had a bunch of walk-in groups with just 2-3 people per lane and paid less. We spoke to management and the staff and were forced to stay in same lane for 12 people and did not open up any space for us and overcharged us. Very poor service. Would never go again. read more

This was a great place for my 5 girlfriends and I to try a new activity. The place was surprisingly not busy on a Saturday so even though we came in a bit late, we got to stay a bit late. They were super accommodating, friendly and funny! We had Chad as our coach and he kept us in stitches the whole time with his dry sense of humor. We were all a little trepid about this activity but a very good time was had by all! read more
