I adopted a Frenchie from this rescue. The process was smooth and although the application had lots of questions I understood all are intended to ensure the dog goes to the best home for her. I let my vet know they would be teaching out and that vet check went quickly and smoothly. Meet and greet was easy and everyone hog along wonderfully so the adoption was finalized and we could not be happier. I started volunteering with this rescue because I believe in the cause and the process and the people in this rescue! If I had any reservations I'd be volunteering elsewhere Most of the negative reviews are from people who were not chose for a particular dog because of the dog's specific needs or personality or because they were unsuitable adopters (dogs are not vaccinated or spay/neutered, lied on the application, etc). Sometimes people have their heart set on a popular dog and it's hard for fosters but they will pick the absolute best home possible so they have the best chance at a FOREVER home possible. Some people don't want to admit they aren't the best fit and retaliate in the reviews so please read negative reviews with a grain of salt. Talk to the volunteers who are also adopters. There is a reason for their loyalty. It's because this organization is amazing and the leaders and volunteers are as well! read more

I've adopted 2 Badass pups and ( about to get a 3rd) cannot emphasize enough how amazing this organization is. They are one of the few organizations that TRULY vet out adopters to ensure the dogs get placed in the proper homes. I've volunteered with and even perused adoption events at various organizations and not one vetted me like Badass did. Also, Badass has a great community where you can connect with other folks that adopted from Badass for advice or puppy progress updates! I am so sad to see that I'm not the only one coming here to share a negative review. I want to acknowledge that this is largely (if not all?) volunteer-run, but that should not mean an absence of at least one dedicated and capable administrator running the show. I did not do my due diligence when selecting agency - the process was the reverse for us because we saw an adoption event first and then fell in love with the dogs. The major major plus side is that my boyfriend and I have rescued the sweetest most well behaved dog in the world and are SO LUCKY he has been so easy, but the process was enough to make us pull our hair out. It's already such a high-intensity, emotional process, and so much back-and-forth and uncertainty could have been eliminated with proactive provision of resources and info that was already in BadAss's possession. At every single turn we were met with condescension and with only some of our questions answered. We both like rules and systems, we love being prepared - everything we did and asked was in the best interest of the dog and in being best prepared for his arrival, but we were treated like we had no idea what we were in for. We were told we could only arrange a visit with him again if we were certain about adopting him (this was after having spent a total of 5 minutes with him at an adoption event). Obliviously we had every intention of doing so, but it's only fair to the DOG and to the agency that we all get along. We were given vital information the day we went to pick him up which we'd been asking for which could have answered 99% of our outstanding questions. Most of it included mention of previous health issues which would NOT have kept us from adopting him, but because it was provided at the 11th hour felt extremely shady. We decided to take matter into our own hands and take him to a vet his second day with us. Worryingly and unfortunately, the vet said he was not a fan of this agency and disagreed with much of the treatment and diagnoses that had been provided. Three days after bringing him home we received a thorough PDF called "how to prepare your home for a new pet"...we had been all but begging for something like that the previous week. 10 entire days after bringing him home, they sent us his full medical history (we'd already been told we received that?). It included recommended dates for updated vaccines, one of which had already passed. That was the final straw for me. We've said numerous times to each other during this process that if we hadn't had dogs before and didn't have each other for sanity checks, we would have gotten cold feet at many points. We might never have rescued this perfect little guy, and I really really hope that doesn't happen to anyone else. read more

I went into the fostering program with my full intention to only foster. In our training, they confirmed this was not a foster to adopt program, but my first mistake was not asking if fosters could be considered for an adoption. In my head, I thought the fosters would still have an option to adopt the dogs if they had a strong bond. I was matched with a beautiful yellow lab mix - they named her "rockaway" I shortened to "rocks" then just went to "roxanne" to make it a little more catchy. On my first day with the pup, she was very anxious about the things around her and did not allow you to pet her. After taking the day off and spending the day quite literally on the floor with her, she began to allow me to give her little massages. After 2 days with her, my fiance and I asked if we could adopt her due to her needs and our growing bond with her, to which they replied we will let you know asap. We then begun to work on her sit, off, go, and wait commands which she picked up quickly and our bond grew even stronger. By Friday, they gave us news that they have an adopter already in process (ie her application was approved but she has not met the dog) we met the adopter via zoom, the young lady seemed to be a lovely person. With that being said, I started becoming very distressed over the entire situation because I've been working with a dog that is scared of anyone she does not know touching her, bolts if she hears anything strange, yet snuggles me and my fiance 24/7 and responded well to our training. So to us, it felt very unnecessary to take a dog that has been through so much trauma and throw her into another home. she had a loving mum and dad here that just adored her and wanted to help her to become a confident dog. After the virtual meeting, we confirmed via email are still very interested in keeping Roxanne. Nicolle from Badass replied back and empathized with the situation however, she did not talk about whether that could even be possible. A day later, they said they are going to go ahead with the in person meeting. We asked them to give us a call to talk about this, because our hearts are absolutely shattering at this point. We get a message from the Executive Director Krista asking if we can come to the office in the morning to have her evaluated and talk next steps from there. We agreed to that, as we thought it would give us an opportunity to give them our case and look them in the eye and see how wonderful of a relationship I have with Roxanne. That morning, I arrived early, and Krista introduced me to the trainer and shared he wants to spend 30 minutes doing a 1-1 evaluation so her and I can go grab coffee. At that meeting, she asks what I wanted to talk about (I thought we were both talking about it) and i shared my perspective, Roxanne had a lovely home with people that loves her and she's made progress so there is no need to destress her more. I offered to help pay for the lovely young women's adoption fee for another pup, and fund their next rescue trip, and continue to foster. Krista grew very aggravated and said that she is going to be adopted out to the other adopter. it's going through, and that is that because this is not a foster to adopt program - I told her that they repeatedly said they want what's best for the dog, and her loving home where she will feel supported and continue to grow her confidence is the best bet. Krista then got up, said we are done here, I asked to say goodbye and she just said a simple and cold "nope" So I have a few issues here: 1) They do not care about what's best for the dog, even if it is a foster they only consider the adopter and making it fit. 2) They do not spend time with the dogs outside of picking them up in Alabama and visiting them at the holding farm in PA. So what they tell you "their experience with the dog" remember it's limited. 3) They absolutely terrorized the pup by pulling her away from me when I went to grab "coffee"- the image of her scratching the group to avoid the steps and looking back at me while I went to "go for coffee" is going to be in my nightmares for probably the end of time 4) I felt very unheard - I understand that this was not ideal for them, but they never once asked for me to get on a call to discuss adoption or anything. They shared stories about the dogs THEY fostered to adopt and compared them to my situation, which I was then denied. They just gave me a huge red x to make a point that they are not a foster to adopt program. 5) I'm a well respected professional individual and deceiving me in such a heartbreaking way - was incredibly cruel for both me and Roxanne. I love this dog and they punished me for that. I'm praying that she is okay and settles in to her new home, but there is literally no way for me to ever find out.. I truly believe they do not do what is best for the animals, they do what aligns with their policy. Every animal is different, and it should be a case-by-case deal. read more

For adopters from a former foster for Badass: -Disorganized staff and leadership with poor communication skills in dealing with conflict -Many dogs have severe behavioral concerns (not necessarily a problem, just know you'll have to put in a lot of time/ be patient with your adoptee) -Encouraged the use of a shock collar on a dog that had separation anxiety and barked excessively. The number on their site isn't helpful because it's a recorded message, they ask for you to email but the response could take 1-2 business days which is super inconvenient.... do your research before you come to this place, PLUS most animal shelters DO NOT place hold on any animal due to "first come, first serve" protocol... so by the time you get a response or find the pkace, the dog or cat you were looking for would probably be done!! I've gotten 2 dogs from Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue, so...I kinda like them a lot. Look, the system is imperfect because its staffed by volunteers. You're not dealing with a giant corporation with an HR department and customer service agents and all that jazz. If you want that, go find it...but it aint here. What you will find here, is an agency of scrappy men and women who thanklessly devote their time, space, hearts and energy into saving dogs. The process requires patience, but guess what...so do dogs. If you're the type of person who "can't stand" the lack of an immediate response, or the enforcement of some rule that you don't understand...than maybe you should get a goldfish. read more

What a wonderful community of people! My husband and I took time to complete the Badass adoption application only once we were ready to commit and bring a pooch into our lives. We explored various rescue organizations in Brooklyn but Badass clicked for us. The process was very organized and fairly quick. It was comforting that they are so thorough in their screening process. The application is lengthy and references are required and checked, they also complete a home visit. While we awaited approval we read and studied and did our best to educate ourselves on dog ownership and various rearing philosophies. Badass rewarded our efforts by matching us with a wonderful pup, Penny. We are only a month in but are already so grateful. The Badass community has welcomed us and we are thankful to be a part of such an amazing group of people. Everyone has been so helpful and supportive. When you are overwhelmed with decisions like picking a vet, dog walker, chew toy, food - you name it, there are others with expert recommendations to assist. I love Badass so much! I used to walk by the summer adoption events near McCarren park every Saturday just to see and pet all of the cute pups. I finally adopted my chihuahua Alvin in September and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Badass made the adoption process so organized and easy and have been supportive even after the adoption. This rescue has a great community of fosters, volunteers and dog lovers and they help you through the process of adoption from beginning to end and beyond. There is a great network of fosters both down south and in NYC so you really get an accurate description of the pups. I have never seen a dog rescue that had everything as "together" as Badass does. Everyone truly loves the work they are doing. When I walked Alvin by the events on our way to the dog run, the volunteers at the events would recognize him and were excited to see how he was doing. You come meet the dogs. Have an open mind and heart. You'll be surprised by all the different types of dogs that might fit with you in different ways. Suddenly you've made a new four legged friend. You fill out an application. Volunteers check your references and someone comes to check your home. If you are approved they charge $450 adoption fee. This $450 may seem high but I've seen what they do with the money. They spend a lot more than that to save a life when necessary. I've adopted two dogs from them myself and one of them had been hospitalized before I got her and Badass covered all of her thousands of dollars in medical bills accrued along with her sisters. I've volunteered with them too and I've seen friends foster dogs for the group. I've seen them mobilize resources in the services of lost or sick animals. I've seen the "happy beginnings" photos of countless pets that were rescued and adopted through the efforts of this organization. I can't say enough good things about Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue. I adopted my dog in October of 2013. I was looking for several months for a dog to adopt and honestly Badass was so great in helping me find the perfect dog for me. Their facebook page gives you an abundance of information on each dog along with many pictures. Any questions you ask they answer promptly through e-mail. They have frequent adoption events where you can meet all the available pups, which is a plus in my book. You also get all the support you need after you adopt. I've had such an amazing and positive experience with this rescue that I highly recommend them. I tried to adopt through this program, but since I was going out of town for a week in the month after I contacted them they refused to even let me start the application process: I.e. wouldn't even let me start meeting dogs to see who I got along with until after my 1 week . When I asked whey I couldn't at least start the process they basically told me to go to a same-day adoption place and refused to work with me. I really didn't want to leave them a bad review cause I'm sure they have dogs that need living homes, but as an organization they're too difficult to work with. read more

I give them 5 Stars for their mission to find animals a good home. However, I give them 1 Star for their horrible communication and adoption process. I wanted to adopt a specific pup that was named at the start of the application. It was a 4-week process of filling out a lengthy application, 3 written references, vet records for my current dog, scheduling a home visit, and agreeing to their $450 fee. During the process I asked in multiple email communications (4-5 times total), about the whereabouts of the pup (Richie) and any updates they could provide. They never addressed or responded to any of my questions in any way and I continued along in their process, trusting that all was good. After the home visit, where someone comes over and looks through your entire apartment, opening doors, etc., and she said everything was great. Then after no communication/feedback for 2 days, I see on Instagram that the pup had been adopted (which, overall is fantastic!). However, this was the worst communication and process that you can imagine and speaks volumes to the type of people that they hire. Absolutely no common courtesy skills or common sense for the person who is doing all things required to give a dog a great forever home. Any update or simple answer to my question would have been great...even if it was to say that "there are other people interested and even if Richie is adopted by someone else, we have some other great dogs that need a home"...any communication would have helped. A truly crappy process and horrible communication for an organization dedicated to good work. read more

We just adopted a one year old from Badass, and he's the best. Had heard only good things from people about the organization and also had a friend who recently adopted from them, who were very happy. We began the application process with a specific dog in mind (well, half of us), and got to meet that dog, among others at the adoption event. In the end, we chose a different dog, one that Nicolle had matched us with and after we made our decision, she told us that was her number one choice. So in addition to getting an amazing dog, the process really ended up producing the best possible result. The whole project is done by volunteers, and it's intensive for all the right reasons. Love, love, love Badass. I simply can't speak highly enough about them. We adopted our beloved Arya from them in August 2012. They rescued her from a very high kill shelter in West Virginia where she was under-nourished and, I'm sure, terrified. They brought her up north, where several fosters helped bring her out of her shell and got her to a healthy weight. This dog has turned into the sweetest, funniest, loveliest little pup imaginable. The work they do is incredible and their dedication to the dogs they rescue is unparalleled. The best part is, you can tell they work very hard to make sure the dogs are well-matched to the people that adopt them. They want it to be a great experience both for the humans and the pups. I cannot say enough good things about Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue. I adopted my pup, Gino, from them about a week ago and I couldn't be happier!! He has adjusted so well to his new home and routine. The volenteers with Badass were so patient and helpful - answering my many emails and taking the time to find me my best match. Gino is healthy, potty trained, and does well in the crate (although this may not be the case for every adoptable pup). Badass takes the time to make sure their pups are in good health and socialized well before allowing them to be adopted. Honestly if you are in the Brooklyn or tristate area, there is no better place to adopt!!! I really wanted to give 5 stars to BBAR but my experience with them was from a volunteer perspective. I filled up a form on their website, I waited for 2 weeks (which is usual) than someone who does their recruitments called Jessica emailed me. She requested to chat with me than after 2 weeks we scheduled a phone meeting. The phone meeting went pretty well as I was so eager to foster dogs (or handling them in whatever event etc) and she told me that the fostering team will get in touch with me in a week or so. This conversation made on August 6, today is October 4. No one called me or emailed me, NOTHING. It is so weird that I know rescues needs lots and lots of foster homes... I feel so lucky I found Badass Brooklyn! I searched for my dog for a year because I wanted it to be the right fit. I had approved applications with multiple rescues. I am so happy I went with BBAR and found Maisel! Nicolle and the staff were so helpful and communicated promptly. I went to a few adoption events and they were always welcoming and responsive. I adopted my pup from Badass over two years ago, when it was just starting out. They run entirely on volunteer help, though they did just get their 501c3, so I think they can start getting some of that sweet, sweet grant money. The rescuers and volunteers are tireless, they bring GREAT dogs to NYC, and they're always doing fun events, fundraisers, adoption events, etc. It's a great group of people, I've volunteered with them a lot in the past, and they do great work. They always have a really wide range of types of dogs, whether it's big to small or puppy to adult. They have all different breeds, and you can find whatever you are looking for. They also are really on top of any issues the dogs have, and are very communicative with the community of Badass adopters after the fact. We adopted "The Dude", now Youk in May 2011. He is the sweetest most amazing beagle I've ever known. We had been looking to adopt a dog for about 5 months, and were turned away from some other rescues because we live in an apartment in NYC (duh) or because we had jobs. Adopting a rescue dog was becoming a frustrating experience. And then we met Sara and Zarina who were working with Tails of Love and the brand new Brooklyn Badass Dog Rescue. I was drawn to their cause of saving dogs from high kill shelters down south and bringing them to loving homes in NYC. Youk arrived and initially had a health scare. The badasses immediately jumped in and ensured he received full healthcare to restore him to tip top shape before coming to his forever home. They really love and care about each dog they rescue and with their volunteer staff make sure that all animals go to the best match of a home. The community that we are now part of has grown to thousands. We have a private facebook group of over 700 members that all share updates about their pups, discuss local resources, share experiences and help new adopters adjust to their new lives. I adopted my beautiful Lola from Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue 3 months ago and I have to say they made the experience really great! Lola is the best dog I could ever have asked for. Because they have fosters for each dog, you feel more comfortable knowing that you have someone to ask about their daily experience in a home vs a shelter where they barely know the animal. I live in the Philly area but they had someone come out and do a home visit who I could talk to about the organization. I thought they were great before I adopted Lola, but they have been even more amazing after. The support and community you feel connected with is amazing. Our wonderful, beautiful and sweet pup was saved from a particularly awful death by the volunteers of Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue. We chose Brooklyn Badass because they fostered the dogs that they pulled from all-kill shelters, so that we could learn firsthand what the dog was like in a home. Not only did we get accurate information from our dog's foster parents, but her medical problem (heart worm) was treated before she came home with us. In addition to getting our happy, goofy hound from Badass, we also got an entire supportive (and frequently hilarious) community of like-minded animal lovers, who are happy to share information, help with problems, and share adorable photos of their Badass pups. read more

I may be a bit biased because I volunteer here, but I really like Badass Brooklyn. They make sure that all their dogs are healthy and happy. They pull dogs from high kill shelters down in the south and after getting the dogs into New York, they make sure that all the dogs have their medication, are spayed and neutered as well as healthy. To adopt, they make sure that the adopters are legitimate, following a strict adoption application process which I believe is better for the dogs. All the dogs are sweet and adorable. I literally want all of them, but I'm even happier when they find loving families to join. If you love dogs, come by and become a volunteer! We're always looking for people to foster more dogs and if you're just looking to adopt, you know that the dogs at Badass are healthy.
