I'm a former in shelter volunteer turned foster (at least for now) for AMA. They have the sweetest cats/kittens that I've dealt with in a long time, besides my own adopted cat. AMA works strictly with sick, abused, and neglected cats and dogs (although I'm completely a cat person), which is more up my alley than working with perfectly healthy animals (my cat is special needs - he's three legged, so that's how I got into working with sick/special needs animals). I've been with AMA for about six months now, and while I wish I had discovered this rescue first, I unfortunately came across Animal Haven first (AMA all the way - AMA is much cleaner and nicer than Animal Haven). AMA is my favorite Brooklyn shelter, and I know people who have adopted from or volunteer/work at other Brooklyn shelters and have somewhat of an attitude when it should be about the animals in need and not about one's ego. Yeah the adoption fees here at AMA are mandatory (unlike the ASPCA where I also foster - they have voluntary adoption fees based on what you can afford; nothing is required besides being a good quality adopter in the eyes of the adoption team there) and higher than you'll see elsewhere, but the animals are genuinely cared for and loved here. The adoption fees aren't the highest in the NYC area for cats and dogs, but they're higher than most other shelters that I know of. It's hard to not get attached to some of the animals there, and I can name a handful of cats that I've grown attached to since the end of March when I came into the shelter for my first shift: Chewy, Spring, Autumn, Tiny, Puff, Kiki, Sushi, Chili, Maple, and my foster, Muffin. It's hard watching them get adopted, but it's also super exciting to see them find where they belong. Here are some final words - if you like cleaning, socializing, meeting new people in person, having some form of structure to your week, and getting out of the house, then you should volunteer in person at the shelter. If working with too many animals at once is overwhelming to you but you still want to help out, consider fostering - AMA covers 100% of costs (including vet visits which any animal lover knows can get expensive), and Mariya is always available to talk to if you need help. read more

I was looking to foster a second cat and decided to work with AMA in December. I had the pleasure of working mainly with Jovanna who was so incredibly thorough in the interview and chats to identify what would work best for me and my cat and who the current cat residents were at the shelter. We decided to foster Alfafa over the holidays to potentially adopt if he was a good fit for the household. It's very clear from my interactions with them that they value every animal dearly and take the extra effort to make sure every potential adopter/foster is the best fit possible. Their application is thorough, they take their time to make sure there's a good match, and it was clear the cats were well taken care of at the shelter. He was saved from a shelter that had he highest kill rate in the Boroughs. Someone could not afford the surgery. We really like the thorough application AMA required, and we were very excited to hear we had a qualifying appointment. The facility houses a small amount of pets and is very clean and well maintained. All the pets have wonderful care. Jovanna walked us thoroughly through the adoption phases as our pup of choice was so young we will be foster to adopt parents until our pup "Brooklyn" will be neutered. We recently had the pleasure of adopting our baby Billy from AMA Animal Rescue. Billy is a puppy and was about to be euthanized by his previous owner for all the wrong reasons. If you live anywhere in NYC and are looking to adopt...GO TO AMA! This was an incredible adopting experience. They truly care so much about their rescues and want to make sure they end up in a fantastic home with owners who will provide them with the best life. I initially reached out to AMA after finding them through Yelp in December 2017. My parents decided to get my younger sister a rescue chihuahua and AMA had one named Pablo up for adoption at the time. I spoke with own of the founders, Anna about the next steps in the adoption process. They were so involved in making sure we were a good fit to have him in our lives. He was badly abused and neglected prior to ending in the hands of AMA so he needed a patient family that was willing to work with his issues and fear of nearly all people. They came to our home to ensure it was safe for a dog to live in, had us interact with him around them, foster him for a set period of time before giving us the go ahead to officially adopt our fur baby. A year and a half later, we still update them on Pablo's new (& very spoiled) life. Everything they do for animals is so incredible and I would recommend them to anyone that wants to adopt. About 6 months ago, I had to take a dog away from a family member who was neglecting this amazing 12 year old dog significantly, with a ruptured tumor. After looking high and low for a surgeon to remove this tumor for the last few months, I had absolutely no luck because most of them said she did not stand the fighting chance. I was fortunate enough to stumble onto the angels for mistreated animals group on instagram, and noticed that many of the cases that they were handling were dogs that were seized from neglectful owners as well as dogs found on the street who in fact had ruptured tumors just like my family member's dog. Fortunately, my family member was willing to turn the dog over to me without a hassle. But it's also good to know that this group will fight tooth and nail in case any form of mistreatment is occurring for an animal and the owner will not turn over the animal to them. I called their number close to midnight, and decided to contact their emergency number via text, and to my surprise, Mariya, owner of the AMA, in fact contacted me back almost immediately and what a caring soul she is! I asked her if she can perhaps refer me to a surgeon that they work with and she said absolutely. She helped me get an appointment in almost no time with one of the most over booked veterinarians and surgeons in New York City. Over the last few days, I've been taking the dog to her suggested vets and I am now awaiting her results. Mariya even reached out to me over the last few days on her own despite her amazingly busy schedule taking care of all of these poor pooches with her amazing staff to see how the baby was doing. Words cannot thank her and her organization enough for helping me find a surgeon willing to take on this very difficult case because of it was not for them, this poor dog would need to have been put down over the next week. If you have the financial means and truly love animals, I would urge you to donate any amount that you potentially can or if you can volunteer, reach out to them as well. My gratitude to them will last forever and I will do my best to help promote there amazing organization! All the best! Update! The dog now has an emergency appointment to remove the entire mass! Our family adopted Fei from AMA recently and it was a great experience. Our volunteer coordinator Claire, even with her busy schedule, was always helpful and responsive -- just a text away. We cannot thank them enough for allowing us to adopt this wonderful Korean Jindo. Fei was rescued from South Korea, from a dog meat farm, where she was a breeder and, at the age of 1 1/2 yrs, has already had at least two litters of puppies. While she's fixed now, it was clear that when we first met her that she wanted a good forever home. For instance, Fei wrapped her paws around my legs the instant I came through the front door. Probably also helpful that we speak Korean and she is so eager to please. While we had some question marks about Fei (or any dog for that matter) and they would be around our toddler, we were able to establish limits and influence behavior very quickly -- AMA being a support every step of the way. AMA also made the home visits so easy -- as was the adoption process, standard and nothing intrusive or out of the ordinary. Along the way, they were helpful with their vet partner in Brooklyn -- where we dealt with a bout of giardia -- and we talked about training and lifestyle considerations. AMA Animal Rescue is a wonderful organization founded by two lovely young women who are dedicated to saving animals. I initially volunteered to foster a dog named Viola who had been abused all her life but pulled from a kill shelter by AMA. Mariya (one of the founder) was very patient with all my questions and always supportive, responding to my many frequent texts as Viola was very sick. AMA did its best to save her life but sadly she passed away. Throughout the whole process I witnessed how much Mariya loved these animals and I am grateful for the opportunity to have given Viola a loving, safe home during the last month of her life. I am currently fostering and will certainly adopt the sweetest black kitten from AMA. Originally named Neyo.... he is now called Faust! I was looking to rescue a black kitten because I used to have one years ago and missed him. I have been working with Michele and she has been amazing! Kind, supportive & involved. I must commend AMA and its volunteers on the very good and needed work they do for our less fortunate furry friends! Michele drove to LI to pick up my Faust from a shelter where it took hours for his paperwork etc, and she and her adorable son drove all the way back to Bklyn to bring him to me at midnight! This is what I call Devotion, Love and Dedication to the cause!! Thank you for bringing Faust into my life! He is so super precious... he has two older brothers, Popeye 8 yrs old and Stevie (ginger cat) 11 yrs old. He's very Sassy! Acts like a Big Boy and runs his kitty brothers ragged! Popeye is ok with it but Stevie enjoys Faust when he has calmed down a bit! Faust loves scrambled eggs, roasted chicken, turkey and sushi...and whipped cream in tiny amounts as treats. Like many others, when the pandemic started, we felt it was the right time to bring home a dog, like we had wanted for so long. But the demand was high. When my brother told me he was fostering a cat, I immediately went over to his house to check him out. This baby was named Haku and he was very shy and timid at first. My brother went on vacation and I took care of his cat for him. During that time, my family and I instantly fell in love with this shy boy. A family became interested in adopting him, so we gave him away to foster for a week (with the help of Stephany, a member of AMA). However, it didn't work out with them, so Haku came back with us. I think it was fate that he came back. Haku came out of his shell and started becoming more affectionate towards us. I am currently in the adoption process and it's made easy by those running AMA. Stephany constantly checked up on Haku and made sure that he was doing okay. She did a house check and made sure that we were capable of taking care of an additional family member. We've been involved with animal rescue since going through the process of adopting a dog late last year. Through this process we saw the good, the bad, and the ugly of dog rescue. AMA is one of the best! We have fostered a dog for AMA in the past and also been in contact with them for other volunteer opportunities. They're always pleasant and very responsive. My biggest compliment to AMA is that they only take on what they can handle. It is so common in animal rescue for people to take on too many animals, get overwhelmed and then put themselves in a position where they can't help anyone. Each animal that they rescue receives the proper care, attention and time so that they spend as little time in boarding/shelter environment as possible. They also make sure that the dogs/cats are adopted into good homes as quickly as possible. Many rescues end up taking in too many animals and can sometimes keep them in excess of 1-2 years! They also treat the people who help them with kindness and gratitude. If you have space in your home, please consider fostering a dog or cat for this rescue. They have a 3 week minimum (the dog we fostered was adopted within that time frame). This short period of time can make all the difference for an animal in need!! read more

When we found an injured Chihuahua hiding in an office building we didn't know who to turn to. Verg wouldn't take her pro bono and other animal rescues were already closed. The police were threatening to take her to the shelter unless we were willing to help her ourselves. AMA came to the rescue. I messaged them on Facebook and through email. Within a few minutes, I received a call from Anna. Per her instructions, we took the dog (Brownie) to Verg and she met us there. We later found out that Brownie had a lot of internal injuries and needed emergency surgery for a prepublic tendon rupture, body wall hernia, splenectomy, resection of the intestine, and general internal bleeding. Without AMA, the police would have taken Brownie and she wouldn't have made it through the night. AMA covered all expenses - over $8,000. They are paying for it through donations. So far, the cost exceeds the donations, but they saved Brownie without focusing on the cost. Unfortunately, we found Brownie's owner and she doesn't want her back. So, in addition to saving Brownie's life, they will be handling her adoption once she heals. I'm so grateful to AMA for saving Brownie and being the only ones available to help at a late hour. Without them, sweet little Brownie would not survive. read more
