Michelle set up a meeting with Dagny, where I met Dagny, Mary, and Dagny's foster. It was a match made in heaven. The following week, they dropped Dagny off at her new home, along with her kennel and toys and a good supply of dog food and treats. She is the best thing that has happened to me in a very long time. Wow. Where do I begin? I never thought a dog rescue could illicit such a poor taste for humanity. These people are absolutely wild. But I digress...adopting a dog is a huge commitment and it requires time, money, and significant thought about the lifestyle changes that such a commitment will make. My sister recently reached out to SSR regarding several dogs after researching extensively and having several chats with the team: she was advised to submit an application, so she did. She reached out to her landlord, references, and local vet to have them on standby because all previous interaction implied the dogs were available and in desperate need of homes. Ironically, 10 days later: no response from the rescue. After following up a 2nd time, we received a very short and dismissive email summarized as saying "sorry dogs aren't available. Best of luck in your search". Since the tone of the entire email was so cold and rude and unlike any previous experience we had with the rescue, we followed up saying in the nicest way possible, that it would have been nice to be looped in sooner and while we understand that they're busy and that the dogs may have happily been adopted, it would have been nice to be informed in a timely fashion so that we could plan accordingly. Apparently, that struck a nerve with SSR (unsure who since no one signs their names). What proceeded was was a series of the most unprofessional and disgusting emails I have ever seen from an organization claiming to do good for the world. It is ironic that they have had time to send multiple hateful, ridiculing, and childish emails when feeling accused of poor business practice and rude tones, but could not even reply to an application in a timely manner with something as simple as "Received. Thank You!" For more than 10 days. In said emails, the "representative" of SSR mocked my sister immediately , called her names, told her she was mentally unstable and that she should consider an emotional support pup (with the implication of good luck to the dog you bring home), as well as telling her that she would be forwarding her personal information to all other rescues in the area so that she would be unable to adopt elsewhere. I have never in my life encountered such a threatening and bullying tone from an organization who is supposedly looking out for the well being of dogs and potential adopters. Aside from mocking mental illness as a whole (which should never be used as a bullying tactic regardless of the situation), this organization threatened to send out HER PERSONAL INFORMATION and email to unauthorized parties simply because she asked them to be more considerate of future adopters time and efforts. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?!?! As a quick sidebar...Let me also summarize our family dog history so you do not think we are a family of psychos who do not understand the dog adoption process. We have grown up with rescues our entire life, namely focusing on challenging dispositions and behavior issues. Our father is a trainer for rescues with behavioral and socialization problems so we have spent plenty of time loving the scared, timid, food aggressive biters, escape artists, etc,etc. I currently have a rescue from an amazing org in NYC and she is becoming a therapy dog and is now being used as a socialization pup for dogs who are struggling with adjustment and dog reactivity. We are a family that knows and loves dogs immensely. We have worked with tons of rescues and rescue dogs of all shapes, sizes and personalities,and never in my life, personal or professional, have I encountered a group of people (or simply one...tough to tell since no one takes personal ownership at SSR), more unkind, combative or rude than these. As I said, adopting a dog is a commitment and a two way street. It is work and it is incredibly rewarding. It's also a huge shame that people like this can so readily ruin an experience that is supposed to be memorable only in the most positive way. Shame on you, SSR. Especially when the world is just needing some kindness and human compassion. PS..I would love to share the entire email chain. SSR is a wonderful rescue. They do a solid job with everything. From the minute the dogs are rescued they are on their way to a better life. Many of the dogs are rescued from overrrun shelters where they might not make the cut and get adopted out. My dog came from W.VA and he was flown up to Jersey City. He lived with a foster family for a short time and also lived at K9dergarten before he met up with me. I believe he went to one group adoption event, wore the little "adopt me" vest, I saw the picture and that was it. Much to my surprise I was contacted promptly and interviewed by SSR. They also called my references. The interview went well and they set up an appointment for that weekend to meet the little guy. I told them I had a concern about my dog Bella getting along with the dog and wanted to bring her with me to meet the dog. They were 100% supportive. Ironically, my dog Bella misbehaved and the rescue dog was so chill and sweet. He went right up to me confidently as if he knew I was his person. I knew right away he'd be a great companion for Bella and myself and I wasn't going to leave without him. One of the greatest things about the SSR adoption process was that he was truly ready to go. Unlike Bella who came from a breeder and needed shots, vet visits, spay, microchipping, etc. My dog was in great health and came with all of his records, neutered, shots and a microchip. This is a great touch. Even if you have a dream dog, there's an adjustment period to a new home. Not having to worry about the dog's health means you can enjoy the dog right away. My fiancé and I recently adopted our puppy, Budgie (fka Prosecco), and couldn't be happier with our experience. After finding Budgie on Petfinder, I applied directly through See Spot Rescued's website. A few days later, I was contacted by a lovely volunteer, Raychel. The process moved quickly. We spoke that night, FaceTimed with Budgie and her foster parent the next day, and the day after that we were on our way to Budgie's foster, Dave, in Jersey City. There are some people who are messengers of love who are in the pet rescue business. And there are some folks who are the crazy cat ladies, but since they're doing good work, you kind of overlook them. Zarina Mak cannot be overlooked. She's the person I dealt with at SSR. I applied to meet a dog at a local doggie daycare. It was important to me to meet the dog, because I have a special needs child, and the dog's behavior had been described as "loving but playful" or something similar. Happened to find myself in front of said doggie daycare, so took a look inside, and wound up being chatted up by a staff member. I mentioned that I'd be there that weekend for the adoption event, and though my initial hope was to adopt a French Bulldog, I wasn't coming in to meet one. Not 20 minutes later, I get a huffy call from Zarina, who tells me, "Well, *I* just got off the phone with [the doggie daycare], and *they* said *you* wanted to get a FRENCH BULLDOG." All those stars and caps? That's how it came out when she said it. Then she lectured me for 10 minutes, accusing me of trying to willfully waste her time. I told her I needed to meet any dog - of any breed - before adopting, with my son, to ensure compatibility. And I told that yes, my original hope had been to adopt a Frenchie. So. The. Hell. What. I reached out to them about one of their dogs, decidedly not a French Bulldog. And she decided to just lay accusations at me. Then she hung up on me. And I thought that was it, but thought we were good - I thought I'd made my case. I later heard from one of my references, She had called them, and said "You know he only wants a purebred, right?". Unbelievable. Zarina, I live in a really nice house in the suburbs now. Huge, dedicated, fenced dog run. Separately fenced giant back yard. Rescue dog - a mutt - having happily converted from skittish city dweller to happy country pup. Ditto for the rescue cat, though he is strictly indoors - but with 5 bedrooms and 3000 square feet of space over 3 floors, he's got plenty of territory to work with and be happy. I was looking to add another dog. SSR popped up on my radar. And it was a shame, because you, personally, left such a bad taste in my mouth that I cannot even consider contacting you. Sure - good riddance, you'll say. But read these reviews. More than a couple think you're ungrateful, unprofessional, and maybe a little nutty. I'm not sure what I think. SSR is amazing! They really care about their rescues and took ALOT of time to talk about each dog that we had an interest with. The amount of knowledge and care was outstanding, Zarina was very honest and upfront with the history of our now beloved dog Gus (AKA Aengus), it allowed us to make an informed decision and take care of Gus the way that he deserved. The whole process was clear and simple and their pets are all up to date with vaccines etc etc. They also gave us a bunch of information, toys and treats he likes, they even gave us his bed that he'd been sleeping in to make him feel more at home! WOW Also special shout out to K9dergarten in JC, it was so lovely to see how much they love their visiting dogs and the rescues waiting for their furever homes! Gus was a bit of a problem child but Marc, Zarina and the rest of the team went beyond to make him as happy as possible and he even loves going to back to visit!! I see the bad reviews and it makes no sense to me other than they did not meet SSR requirements...which is only because they care and would never give up one of their own to a family that was not suitable or that they are inundated with applications and run on volunteers who also have full time jobs! We are now a happy family, so thank you SSR I would recommend to anyone looking to adopt! read more

We have adopted from SSR twice, first in 2016 and again in 2019. We have been absolutely satisfied with the process both times and love our new canine family members. I know many county shelters will give a dog to anyone who applies and do not do adequate health checks -- I have had bad experiences with the county shelters in the past. SSR is totally different. They will do their best to make sure that you are paired with a dog who is right for you (even if that turns out to be a different dog than the one you had your heart set on based on their pictures on social media). We initially wanted another dog, but SSR swayed us towards our Sally and it was the best decision - she was the perfect dog for us. Both of the dogs we have adopted have been in perfect health, spayed, vaccinated, and perfectly matched for us (people without much experience with dogs and not a lot of time to handle any serious behavioral issues). Both of our dogs also came fully house-trained - neither had any accidents, which was a requirement for us because we did not feel equipped to potty train a dog. Our dogs are both happy, well-adjusted animals who were destined to be members of our family! SSR's a unique rescue - they have great communication and you adopt into a family. i love their social media and I love the See Spot Succeed Facebook group that you get to join after you adopt. It's a great place to ask questions, get tips, and look at pictures of happy pups that got a loving home! I see a couple of people below who complained about the process being too rigid or taking too long, but that was not our experience. Is it like a pet shop where you walk in and they sell a dog to anyone who wants it? No. It will take a few days to have your application processed, for a meeting to occur, etc. Thank goodness--these are animal lives at stake and they will call your references, your landlord, etc. to make sure you are a good candidate. And, remember, they are run by VOLUNTEERS. If you need the immediate gratification of buying a dog on the spot, picking a dog based solely on its picture, etc, that's problematic. If you instead want to make sure you get a good, healthy dog whose personality and needs matches your family, then SSR is the perfect rescue to adopt from! read more

I had applied for a dog through this agency and the lack of response was horrible. Not only do they not have a number to contact but they refuse to answer emails, direct messages, and Facebook messages about in person meetings or if dogs are still available. I had applied right away and was told the turn around time for application was 3-4 weeks but when they company finally responded I was told the dog was already placed. I imagine i was one of the first applicants as the dog wasn't even posted at the time i filled out the application and only found out about him through a random social post. Very unhappy with how this place is run and would not recommend using them in the future, so many other rescues in the area are way more approachable and responsive and this is not worth your time or effort because they will ignore you and you wont end up ever seeing the dog you are interested in. read more

My husband and I went through the adoption process with See Spot about a month ago. It was a lovely experience! They take great care in ensuring a perfect match between the dog and household, which is the best situation for both pup and human. It does mean, however, that you might not get the first dog you apply for, but if you stick with it the outcome is amazing. I am incredibly disappointed with the misleading reviews provided for this organization. When you are looking to adopt an animal, you want to know what the process is like, how the organization treats its adoption-hopefuls, etc. Sure, it's nice that your dog is great and you love it and you're one happy family now, but the reviews should reflect the experience with SSR and not your animal. Anyway, I digress. If you haven't already figured as much, I was unable to adopt a dog through SSR. Don't bother asking if my application was even accepted as a suitable adopter. I have no idea. I was informed after a week and two days that the dog I applied for went to another home. That's wonderful, and I am incredibly happy. But what about any other animals? Well after an agonizing wait I can't even say whether or not I'm up to this organizations standards to adopt! (Which are incredibly high, although I am confident that we met them). Overall, I have a very bad taste in my mouth that deters me from adopting when I can just as easily purchase a dog with much less of a hassle. It drives me crazy when people say "adopt don't shop" and the adoption process is harder than the SATs. I could probably adopt a kid faster than a dog with SSR. Sure, be prudent in your search. I could not agree more that these organizations carry a liability over their head by placing dogs--you never want to put an animal back in a neglectful situation. But the communication process here sucks. I only found out the dog we applied for went to a new home after inquiring 9 days later. Side note--we went through the proper channels. Met the animal (with our dog!), filled out a completed application, made a donation before it was even asked of us. Other side note--our first dog was purchased from a breeder. Even with a bad experience here, I still want to adopt. I really want to do the right thing and take a dog off the streets. Just wanted to clarify for those who cringed at my "adopt don't shop" paragraph. Final verdict? Go somewhere else. There are much easier ways to give a loving home to an animal than by going through SSR. I've already been in more communication with other places in two days than I was with SSR in almost two weeks. read more

I cannot say enough good things about See Spot Rescued! My husband and I just adopted our first dog -- a healthy, happy hound mix named Jack White! SSR has loving fosters that take care of your dog pre-adoption. This is very helpful as we had a very good understanding of what to expect once we took Jack home (we even had a few photos and videos sent to us). Zarina was very accommodating and met us during the work day for our adoption meeting. She sat with us for an hour, answering all of our questions and ensuring that SSR is not a one-and-done rescue shelter, but a supportive family. There is a closed facebook group where other families, trainers and volunteers share advice and stories about their dogs. SSR is an amazing organization filled with wonderful, dedicated people who donate their time to help pets find homes. We adopted our dog through them and cannot thank them enough for helping us find the missing member of our family. After reading some other reviews, I wanted to share some parts of the process. There is an application that has to be completed that is very thorough. This is for your benefit and the dog's benefit. It made us think of a number of things we hadn't considered before adopting our dog who was our first pet. It also enabled SSR to learn about our family. We have four children so finding a dog who can thrive in that household was not easy. To be clear, there were some dogs I asked about that I was told in advance wouldn't be a good fit because of things they had learned through our application. There were also dogs (such as the one we adopted) who they suggested we take a look at. So, although it might seem lengthy it is TOTALLY worth it and a valuable piece of the process because it helps them get to know you. They also encourage coming to their open houses and meeting dogs. This is also important. I went to my first SSR open house 4 months before adopting my dog. By meeting different dogs and volunteers we also got to know each other and SSR used that to help us find our dog. We finally agreed on a dog that we all thought would work for my family. So we loaded up my 3, 5, 7 and 9 year old children to go meet their new dog. I had already met him at an open house and we were sure Chris was the perfect dog for us. When we went to the meeting, Chris seemed very shy around the children. SSR and my husband and I decided it was not a good fit. My children were disappointed and scared about what was going to happen to Chris. One week later, Zarina (from SSR) sent us a video of Chris playing fetch with his new owners in his new backyard. This simple gesture meant the world to my kids and reassured them that he had found a home. This was above and beyond what SSR had to do. A few weeks after Chris, I was at another SSR open house to see some dogs. Zarina told me she wasn't sure they were the best fit but that I should look at Simon. He was not what we were looking for and he even looked a little intimidating but I figured I would trust Zarina. Within an hour of meeting him I called my husband to bring the kids to meet him and an hour later Ty (formerly known as Simon) was on his way home with us. When the fit was right, it seemed like the adoption flew in the blink of an eye. After months of waiting it took less than an hour for him to come home. Ty now enjoys tea parties with my daughters and hiking with all of us. He is the best nurse for when kids are home sick from school. He is the BEST dog and a wonderful addition to our family. Whenever we do have questions or need advice, the SSR family is always willing to answer questions or help out. You become a part of the family when you adopt. SSR may not be the fastest place to adopt a dog but it is the best. They care about finding homes not getting rid of dogs. And finding homes takes time and consideration. We will forever be grateful to them for all they did for us. read more

Several years ago See Spot helped us bring Bodhi, our Jack Russell mix, into our lives. Bodhi has been nothing short of the perfect addition to the family. We've now had our new pup, Dexter, (fka Bruce Springsteen) just over a week, and he's settling into life with us pretty smoothly. We have nothing but positive things to say about SSR. We applied to a couple rescues, but decided to just hold out and wait for the right dog with SSR. We have 2 small kids, and are novice dog owners, so we really needed someone to steer us toward the right match, and SSR really did that for us. Bruce maybe didn't catch our eye in the photos because of his dark face, and SSR really helped us look at the whole dog package to find the right personality match for us. To anyone seeking a reputable, honest, reliable and established dog adoption, you will be in good hands with See Spot Rescued. I was shocked to read a one-star review below and felt I had to share how completely opposite I feel about SSR. SSR is 100% volunteer and non-profit. The volunteers, including Zarina mentioned below, dedicate many workday and weekend hours to making sure each dog is: - healthy, - safely transported, - fed high quality food, - properly fostered/boarded in a environment that suits their needs, - placed in a thoroughly vetted and stable home where both family and dog can thrive Yes, as a reviewer commented, that process takes time. If it didn't, SSR would risk the all too likely possibility of the dog winding up back on the street again or the certainty that new owner and dog would both be stressed due to a bad match. The processes they complete do much to prevent this happening. Additionally, SSR and their volunteers actively participate in community events in Jersey City and Lower Manhattan in order to be a part of and interact with those communities. They bring dogs to these events so that the community can meet both dogs and the organization - come to an event and you will know the gracious and happy volunteers you will be adopting from. Amazing organization! Zarina, the founder, is.m a saint, having rescued hundreds and hundreds of dogs since founding it 5 years ago. The process took a few weeks from our initial email. We found out our #1 choice wasn't available anymore but then SSR recommended another furry mushball who ended up being PERFECT for us! After our first email, it was a week until a 1-hour phone interview and then it took only 7 days until bringing our guy home - and that had to do more with our schedule than SSR's availability. They checked our references within 24 hours of talking. We met him at a doggie day care in downtown Manhattan and fell in love instantly. SSR provided us with a lot of paperwork, advice, phone numbers, trainer referrals and basically sets up every dog and dog owner to succeed. They rescue dogs from all over the country and take amazing care of them until they find their furever homes. And unlike a lot of NY-based orgs, SSR dogs are very diverse in breeds and ages so you're likely to find what you're looking for. My girlfriend and I just adopted our 2 year old Black Lab Mix from See Spot Rescued and could not be happier with how the adoption process went. Over the last few months, we had been talking about adopting a dog and inquired with several shelters. SSR was, by far, the most involved shelter we came across. After submitting the first inquiry, we received a long, detailed note describing their adoption policies and what they would need from us. We filled out the application that same night and within 24 hours all of our references had been contacted. What sets SSR apart from every other shelter is that they only work on one application at a time; meaning, once they accept and approve your application, you can not lose out on adopting your special pet due to a first come, first serve approach. SSR also set up a mandatory meet and greet to make sure we were the right fit for our furry friend. SSR sent us a big packet for first time dog owners once we were approved that have been incredibly helpful for Harley to transition to our home. It is also worth mentioning that SSR is dedicated to managing the health of their animals. When we found out Harley developed a hook worm (a very common issue) before she was handed to us, SSR completely covered the cost of getting her well. They even called the veterinarian we saw to pay for the medication immediately. Everyone that we have encountered at this organization is dedicated, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. I'm so grateful to see spot rescued for "matching" me with my lil' nugget. I had been searching for a dog for a long time (thru shelters and other rescues) but things just never worked out. I was getting very disheartened but decided to give it once last shot with see spot rescued because I heard great things about them. Their site said they are good at "matching" the right dog with the right owner, so instead of applying for a specific dog, I just told them what I was looking/hoping for. It's funny, because they sent me a "match" so quickly that I figured they must have just picked any ol' dog and I had doubts about it being the right one for me and vice versa. Turns out I was completely wrong. As soon as i met my selected "match" I just knew she was the dog for me. It was love at first sight :) Still, I was apprehensive about taking her home because I have 3 cats. But they assured me that this cutie was good with cats so I put my trust in them and brought her home. They were right yet again! My dog immediately behaved well around my 3 cats. I never even had to bother doing days of slow introductions with all the animals. The dog they picked for me was so chill around my cats that, after a few initial hisses from the kitties, everyone become buddies! My dog was also already house broken and, to my surprise, already knew a few basic commands! She's such a good girl and I just love her...and so do my cats! Applied for a dog, SSR told me they got adopted, which was sad for me, great for the dog. Not even a few days later they are advertising that dog on facebook. I emailed them asking why they they are advertising the dog with new photos since she was "adopted", and they told me that they still advertise dogs as the adoption is pending which seems kind of rude. I wouldn't care if they told me my application didn't meet their standards, or if they just didn't respond to my application. Instead, someone took time out of their day to send me an email lying about the status of the dog. I just don't appreciate being straight up lied to. I found a dog through another rescue, but I'm going to tell everyone I know to avoid this place. The dog is still being advertised on facebook so clearly she has not been adopted. read more

I had been searching for a dog for about 6 months. All of the rescues I contacted would never follow up with any of my applications, emails or phone calls. It was a very disheartening experience. Then I heard about See Spot Rescued and decided to write them an email. I didn't apply for a specific dog with them, I simply let them know what I was looking for. A few days later, I got an email back with a link to a dog they thought would be a great fit for me. They sure picked a cutie!!
