I understand that opinions on bagels, pizza, hell...EVERYTHING will run the gamut from awesome to awful, even when evaluating the same subject matter. That's the beauty of Yelp, we share our thoughts and help others in determining their next adventure in the world of goods and services! As for "Bagel Cafe," located in the South Jersey town of Delran in Burlington County, the harsh "TLDR" of my opinion on them is: what they sell isn't even a bagel! Keep driving northward, buy a 6 pack of a grocery store brand, or set your expectations here accordingly. For one, there is zero chew. Bagels are supposed to be boiled. I don't know why, but these had no chew. Bagels are a fine balance of chewy and pillowy. They have body to them, but they aren't supposed to be dense like a hockey puck. These lean toward the hockey puck side of things. Flavor? I went with plain and asked for it untoasted: the true test of a bagel in the eyes of many. The verdict: a faint chemical/artificial aftertaste that reminded me of the grocery store brands my parents would buy in Florida, or the variety found at a roadside motel's continental breakfast buffet. For $9, the lox provided was quite skimpy. The schmear was also far from generous. On the bright side/ I could at least taste the chintzy amount of lox due to the lack of flavor & small quantity in everything else. Speaking of generous, anything more than 1 star to describe this so-called "bagel cafe" is kind and generous in my eyes. If your eponymous product is lackluster- either improve it, or change the name of your establishment and spare yourself the embarrassment. After all, we live with the expectations we set. My girlfriend had a plain, untoasted with scallion cream cheese. No hyperbole: she put half of it in the trash despite being hungry. Spare YOURSELF $9 for the lox bagel (about $3 for others) and the disappointment you'll feel upon choosing your next adventure at Delran's "Bagel Café." At least we didn't get sick! Glass half full: they do accept credit cards and the scallion cream cheese had scallions in it. Let's call this a "1.5 stars if I could." EDIT: forgot to mention that my cat expressed zero interest in the lox, when he's usually all over it from a good bagel shop. read more

It's funny how so many people state their bagel bona fides by proximity to New York City. You know, "I'm from the City, so I know bagels..." Sorry, I was born and raised there myself (Washington Heights), and I've had some great bagels in all 5 boroughs, but also sampled pretty bad ones in all corners of the Apple; often in the same neighborhood. True, soft water from old wooden water mains helps, but nothing takes the place of a great recipe and patience. So, the truth is there are awesome bagels to be had almost everywhere the proper ingredients and skills are present. That includes just about anywhere in the Eastern USA, and any bakery close to sea level. So, not sorry. The Bagel Cafe in Delran, NJ, is but one example. It looks innocuous enough in a bland Rt.130 North shopping center in the middle of Burlington County. But, it would be a mistake to pass on it out of a mistaken assumption that nothing exceptional could come out of an oven there. Au contraire, Mon Frere. That Onion Bagel overlain with Veggie Cream Cheese was a true delight. Its texture was perfect - firm crunch on the outside; airy light texture within. Mild sour flavor perhaps from the brief bath in boiling water with brine or lye to toughen its skin, yet not too much kneading to harden its tender heart. Piquant spread to pull the varied elements together. True, I think I detected a soft Russian accent from the women behind the counter. That would give them an edge in understanding the cultural imperatives of a true bagel, but whatever their secret, their creation had me imagining old country roots in the villages outside Kiev. I have found the bagels at this place to be the best around. The onion bagels and everything bagels are great. Try them with scallion cream cheese. I've recently tried their bacon egg and cheese on a Kaiser roll and it is very good as well. It's not just about the quality of the bagels that makes this place a pleasure to visit. I am a bagel snob. I'm anti-bagel toasting unless they're sub-par bagels. Finally made the decision to stop by here and try it out. Ordered my usual (bagel order), everything bagel w/ scallion cream cheese. This did NOT have to be toasted. It was satisfying. Nice firm outside and chewy in the middle. Had a reasonable amount of seasoning on the top too. More importantly, had SALT...not an overwhelming amount, but just that little bit to compliment the flavor (several everything bagels down here don't have salt at all!). Got an early start to the day while headed to work, and I didn't grab my breakfast, so I figured I'd stop and pick something up on the way. Already knew I wanted an everything bagel, but I refused to get it from Dunkin or Wawa. Stopped here instead, and I was happy that I did. Walked in and the spot was empty, but I could tell all hell would be breaking loose shortly. They were so prepped for their morning rush. Eggs nearby, a stack of bacon ready to be added, some Canadian bacon prepping on the grill... anyway, I ordered an everything bagel, lightly toasted, with bacon and cheese. NO EGG! Most places are totally thrown off by the no egg thing. As I was waiting for my bagel people were pouring in. They even had folks calling their orders ahead of time. Got my bagel and headed out. I didn't eat it until I got to the office, and I was a little disappointed that there was only a few slices of bacon on it, but it was delicious either way, and I'd definitely stop back in if I had extra time in the AM. read more

Whenever I show up at work with a dozen from the Bagel Cafe, people comment about how good the bagels are. I'm not usually eating with them, because I always order myself a pork roll, egg and cheese (on an everything bagel- I am a fan of any bagel place that puts salt on their everything bagel (otherwise it's just a most-things bagel, and what's the point of that?)). for the ride. Bagel Cafe actually has the same exact inside as just about every other bagel place I've ever been to, so no extra points on that. Really great place. Favorite bagel is their veggie. The sandwiches are really good too. I always get the chicken salad BLT but have tried their tuna and egg salad BLTs and just as good. The guy asked me my order three times and I repeated it three times. I get home and the order is completely wrong. They never get your order right. The girls don't write anything down and ask you 5x what you ordered. You still get the wrong stuff.
