I've been coming here for several years, and as a vegetarian, the yellow curry with soft tofu is always my go-to. I've also tried the drunken noodles, which are really good as well. The taste and quality have been consistently great over the years. It's a very small spot with no indoor seating, just a few outdoor tables that tend to fill up quickly during peak hours, so ordering to-go is probably the easiest option when it's busy. Banh Thai is one of the most beloved Thai food restaurants in San Diego, and has been for many years! I've come to try many of their dishes and appetizers. They were my go to restaurant to order takeout from during 2020, and I haven't really been back since their fire-damaged location in Hillcrest that shut down their restaurant in 2023. There are longer wait times since it's the only remaining store. My order took extremely long for pick up, and I was over at the gift shop next door but still remained close enough to hear them calling out orders. I waited on another 20 minutes for my order when it was already done because I didn't hear them bring my order out. My drunken noodles were still standard in flavor but slide to sitting there it was very soggy once I sat down to eat. After trying them again, unfortunately I don't think Banh Thai is up there for me anymore. Bahn Thai Yelp search results showed Bahn Thai as the most reviewed thai restaurant in San Diego, so I had to find out... From their Yelp page, I already knew what to kind of expect: No indoor seating, No ceramic plates, No Silverware...all of which are almost dead breakers for Me so I ordered everything willing to try dining in the outdoor patio. While waiting, the flies outside was too disturbing and turned me off, so I immediately instructed the staffer to change my order TOGO, my potential dining vibe and ambiance were affected :( Service from the cashier and attitude from the cooking staff was cordial, helpful and nice. They understood my preference to eat with silverware, proper plates and no flies bothering me. They packaged the food order meticulously. I am aware their Hillcrest location which will have full service with all the dining accoutrements I prefer will open early 2026. When I got home, I plated every dish and enjoyed it All. The pad thai was delish. The curry had perfect viscosity: not too heavy thick and not too watery runny. The veggie egg rolls were scrumptious. This place was so good that my bf & I had to come back! And we love a spot that has vegetarian options with fake (mock) chicken/duck and tofu, veggies. First time I got the yellow curry at a level 5 (out of 5) spice with mock duck. And it was phenomenal! Very flavorful stuff!! For people who like spice but don't have a high tolerance, please do a 3. Everyone else, 1-2. Also got drunken noodles. Also bomb! The next time I tried the pineapple fried rice with mock duck and pro tip! Get the side of curry sauce (any flavor; I did yellow) and pour it over. It's so bomb! If I had to do it again, I would ask to add potatoes and bell peppers to the fried rice and then get two sides of curry sauce. BF had the firecracker chicken and it's good but we both agree that the curries here are the way to go with any protein preference. These three are literally either next door or across the street from each other. To us this stretch of Park Blvd. is the epicenter of San Diego's epicurean delights. It's not really a sit-down type of restaurant since it's a small establishment with very limited outdoor seating. Additionally, it was difficult to find street parking, especially since I went on a weekend. FOOD: Chicken Satay (4.5/5) - The skewers were very flavorful and nicely charred. The meat wasn't dry, and the peanut sauce it came with was a nice addition. Pad See Ew (3.5/5) - Definitely not the best pad see ew I've ever had. The taste was sweeter than most. The flavors were still great, but I also wish the noodles were a bit more caramelized/charred. I didn't mind that they used regular broccoli, but I thought that was interesting to point out. The beef that accompanied it was tender and not tough. I had to order my food mild since my friend can't handle spice, so I really did appreciate that they provided chili oil and other flavor enhancers on the side. I think this is a perfect spot to eat casual Thai food since they already pack it in a Togo container as well. The pad Thai was decent. The boat noodle was a little different/weird. The broth had a particular aftertaste that I wasn't used to. It also came in a pretty small bowl from what I expected, I wouldn't order that again. One of my favorite Thai Restaurants of all time. Everything I've tried here is delicious and well seasoned! I always call ahead of time to place an order for pickup- the wait is generally 30-45 min. When picking up, the staff is kind and it's a quick process. The building itself is small so there's no sitting area. This time I tried their Choo Chee Fish dish (fried fish in Red Curry sauce) for the first time. It's delicious! Especially the Red Curry sauce. My go to is usually a Red and/or Green Curry. Their Eggplant Basil is also so good! Their Thai Tea is also something good to try- this is too sweet, but it's a good treat! Honestly, everything here is good. Today I went to Bahn Thai with a friend after going to the Museum of Us in Balboa Park, just a quick 10 min drive away. Parking was plentiful on the street, but might get crowded on weekends. The restaurant is small, but well-organized. There is no indoor seating, but there are a few tables on the sidewalk. This is a very casual, primarily takeout restaurant. I ordered the yellow curry with chicken and my friend ordered the lemongrass chicken. Both were fantastic! The yellow curry was so flavorful, the chicken was cooked thoroughly, and the veggies were fresh and delicious. We both ordered spice level medium, and it definitely had the perfect amount of kick to it. Everything is served in takeout containers which is convenient for taking leftovers home, and adds to the low-key, chill vibe. Service was fast and friendly. No concerns there. I definitely recommend this spot for excellent casual Thai food when you are in the University Heights area. I will return for sure. read more

This is one of my favorite places for Thai food. My go to dish is the yum neua spice level 1. I like to eat it with a side of rice. I love all the flavor that comes packed into this salad but the portion size can be a hit or miss when ordering it as take out. I would recommend calling in advance and then picking up your order.
