Instead, I accidentally walked into what felt like the culinary cousin of a nightclub. The music was pumping, the energy was high, and any thoughts of a tranquil retreat disappeared faster than my appetizer. Maybe it's a completely different vibe during the day, but at night, this place is definitely alive. That said, once I adjusted my expectations (and accepted that my meditation session would have to wait), I had a great time. The restaurant is located inside Sky Deck, an indoor food hall with multiple vendors. Finding it felt a bit like a scavenger hunt since the signage wasn't very obvious, but after asking around, I eventually made my way there. I started with the garlic green beans after seeing another reviewer rave about them, and wow- they were not exaggerating. The dish arrived with a tiny umbrella perched on top, which was both adorable and unexpectedly glamorous for a plate of green beans. This appetizer was small but mighty. Every bite was packed with flavor, and if I hadn't already ordered an entrée, I absolutely would have ordered a second round. For my main course, I chose the Pad See Ew with fried tofu at medium spice. Apparently, their definition of "medium" and my definition of "medium" are not close relatives. This dish came with a kick! Halfway through, I found myself wishing I had ordered something sweet to balance things out. Instead, I bravely faced the spice armed only with hot water and a slice of lime. Um, it was a battle. While the portion size wasn't quite as large as what I've seen at similar restaurants, it ended up being exactly the right amount for me that evening. I left satisfied without feeling overly full. The service was wonderful as well. The waitresses were kind, and the hostess checked in during my meal, which made the experience feel welcoming and attentive. Although I didn't get the quiet, zen-like end to my work week that I had envisioned, I ended up enjoying something different: a fun solo date surrounded by great food, upbeat music, and the infectious energy of the crowd. Such a beautiful Thai restaurant located within the Del Mar Sky Deck with incredibly flavorful dishes! We surely left sated and with full and happy bellies. Kiin is such a wonderful restaurant located in a very fun plaza, the Sky Deck. I was meeting up with a friend and we decided that we wanted Thai food. She hadn't been to Kiin before so we decided to check it out. The plaza was bustling with people but had plenty of parking. We went up to the restaurant and were quickly seated. We ordered the Tamarind Glazed Chicken Bite, the Pad See Iw, and the Somtom, with the Mango Sticky Rice for togo. Everything we ate was so flavorful with the perfect amount of saltiness, spice, citrusy taste, and sweetness. The chicken bites had a bit of that crunch and it was just so, so good, with the tamarind flavor prominent as well. The menu didn't have an overwhelming number of choices but just enough for a good variety. Service was good and the staff are professional and delightful. I've loved this place for a long time, the food is great, and I really appreciate the clearly marked vegan dishes. That's why our Father's Day (Sun Jun 21st) visit was so disappointing. We came in around 4:45pm to celebrate, and our male server (just one male server working that evening) was rude and full of himself. It put a real damper on what should have been a special family meal. That kind of attitude has no place in an otherwise wonderful restaurant. We went to Sky Deck to check out some foods, and came across this Thai place that looked good! We ordered at the front where a server helped us, and our food came about 10 minutes after. The place inside though had ample seating and moody lighting. We brought our items home to enjoy, but I was a little disappointed with the flavor. The pad thai was under seasoned and bland. I wished it had more sauce or umami. The tangerine chicken (I didn't realize it was not recommended for togo since I ordered in person) was soft, expected. However, that was more of my error. I think the sauce it came with was very tangy, almost too tangy, and the chicken bits were small compared to the thickness of the batter. The food came out super fast within a couple minutes after ordering which could be good or bad depending on how you look at it hahah. One thing to know is they don't serve beef at the restaurant. I ordered Pad thai with veggies and Tofu he charged double the price that was listed for an extra add on. The dish smelled foul and very upsetting. My friends dish was drenched in sauce not how crispy chicken is supposed to be. $70 for 2 no drinks. Oh and they serve tap water. I thought it would make a nice adventure to visit the Del Mar beaches and have lunch in the area. The food hall is located in a bustling shopping plaza in Del Mar. Apparently, this is a relatively new establishment. In comparison to food halls in OC, I'd say there aren't nearly as many options, but I was excited to see San Diego adopt the paradigm. On a noon time Saturday, the location wasn't busy at all and there was plenty of seating. The Thai tea was delicious and ginormous. The steamed fish didn't suit my tastes, but felt more like an authentic Thai cuisine. I'm definitely a bigger fan of the pad thai and the curry. We ordered Kiin Extraordinary Thai to be delivered to us just about a thirty second walk away at their Sky Bar. Specifically, we ordered their Yellow Curry with Steamed Tofu as the protein, brown rice and an order of their Chicken Fried Rice. Their Yellow Curry with steamed tofu added would be more aptly named Yellow Soup with hardly anything in it but some yellow curry broth. I kid you not---only four or five small chunks of tofu and barely any vegetables at all were floating around in the container. Our food was delivered to us by a disinterested young woman who became clearly annoyed when I asked her for a pair of chopsticks to eat our food with. She promised to return with the chopsticks. We never saw her again. This, despite the fact that we'd paid her a tip in advance (merrily added onto our bill) and despite the fact that their restaurant sat entirely empty. I witnessed this fact myself---when I finally walked down to their small restaurant myself in hopes of finding chopsticks or at least a couple of clean forks. Forget about asking these disinterested people for any sort of plates upon which to eat your food. As they informed me with tones on disinterested annoyance, "No! We don't have plates!" Really? No plates? Are guests expected to just shovel our meals out directly onto the countertop of the bar upstairs? Way overpriced for the slop they package up for you with no plates and no utensils. read more
