To be honest this was some of the best Thai I have had. To start off their appetizer naan and curry dip was like crack and so addicting... lets just say I uber eatsed it next day. Their jerky was good too. The meat wasn't too tough like other places, its like they actually slow cooked it and marinated it instead of rushing the process. Our initial reason for visiting was for khao soi but after seeing other peoples reaction to pad thai and seeing how many people had pad thai I got that. It wasn't super sweet and was flavorful. Lastly I know the mango sticky rice is reliant on the mangos but the day we went they were perfect. Overall food was so good and will keep us coming back. Now to the service, our waiter was not overwhelmed and did his job with finess. It wasn't long waits for the water to be refilled or for him to greet us. Finally we will talk about the restaurant. It was so nice to see the place having their culture on display rather than trying to cover it with contemporary, modern or Chic looks. It wasn't loud, it was like at a family gathering where everyone was talking and eating but not being drown out by loud music. Its hard for me to give 5* because I have expectations that service and food must be amazing to get that rather than 5* because they tried. Finally stopped into this cute spot on Convoy after walking past it so many times! The interior is charming, but the experience was a bit of a mixed bag. We arrived around 8:00 PM, and even though the restaurant wasn't full, it took quite a while for us to be seated. It felt a bit odd since there was no line, though they do close at 9:00 PM. What we ordered: The Steak Salad was delicious - the apple slices added a perfect, crisp sweetness. The Pad See Ew with chicken was easily my favorite dish of the night. The Tom Yum Noodle Soup was just okay - I really wish it had vegetables to round it out. My friend also found the Thai Tea to be a bit too sweet for her taste. We asked for "Medium" spice level for everything, but it all came out spice-less. Having to add our own chili at the table definitely took away from the flavor profile. Koon Thai is one of the better Thai restaurants in the area. Location wise - this is in one of the busiest plazas, so plan accordingly if you don't want to wait a ridiculously long time for dinner. Anyone that says theres plenty of parking hasn't been here during a weekend evening often enough and it shows. They do use yelp for reservations, so keep that in mind The aesthetic and vibe is bright, vibrant, and smells hella good once you get inside. It can seem a bit cramped, but it is quite accessible - my dad is in a scooter so they were able to accommodate despite it being such a busy place. The food always hits, even if its basic pad thai. Ive never had a complaint for their food quality. So definitely try everything on the menu, it has been quite consistent. I think I came on an off day because the food was alright but the service... yeah that part was rough. I've honestly had better hospitality from understaffed fast food spots during a rush, just to give you an idea. I made reservations just in case but it wasn't busy so we were seated right away. The host was very sweet which gave me hope, but everyone else did not match that energy. The menu is fun though, bright, colorful, and packed with options. It was a little overwhelming because everything sounded good, so we ordered a few dishes to try a variety. It didn't take us long to decide, but when our server came over to drop off water and sharing plates, she assumed "you guys need more time huh." We said no, we're ready, but she walked away anyway. That already threw the vibe off. When she came back, asking about spice levels somehow turned into a whole situation. We have only ever been to other Thai restaurants that offer a 0-10 scale, so sorry we didn't know Koon Thai was different!! A little explanation for new guests seems reasonable to me. She said level 5 is "mild," which felt high, so I asked for a 3 and she responded with "we only have 5." It was confusing and honestly way more complicated than it needed to be. Food came out fairly quick but not together. One person asked for chili sauce, the food runner nodded and never came back, so we had to flag him down again. Not a busy night either, so not sure what that was about. Som Tum Thai (Papaya Salad) Chopped green papaya with green beans, tomatoes, peanut dressing This was actually one of the better dishes. Tangy, fresh, and I liked the garlic flavor. It had a nice balance and didn't feel heavy. Yum Pla Todd (Whole Fried Fish) Crispy fried whole fish with spicy lime dressing, apple, herbs, and peanuts The presentation was beautiful, but the flavor leaned way too sweet. It almost tasted like fish with a lemonade sauce. The apple herb salad on top was refreshing though and helped balance it a bit. Pad Kee Mao (Spicy Noodles with Beef) Wide rice noodles stir fried with bell peppers and basil This had good flavor and a really large portion. The downside was the beef, it was very dry and had that grey beige look which kind of threw me off. Kraprao Moo Krob (Crispy Pork Belly with Basil and Rice) Crispy pork belly with basil served over jasmine rice It was salty and dry, and some pieces weren't even crispy, just soft fat that didn't look appetizing. Almost like someone chewed up a piece and spit onto our plate. I did like the fresh basil though. We came here to celebrate a birthday so I really wanted it to be a good dinner, but we left pretty disappointed. Everything here was a 10/10, but my favorite bite had to be the mango sticky rice. It truly was the BEST MSR I've ever had in my life... The mangos were perfectly ripe, the rice was so soft and just melted in your mouth, and the coconut cream adds an amazing richness and nuttiness to the dish. I haven't been to Koon Thai since 2019, and coming back they seemed to have revamped the menu. For some reason I've never sat on the left hand side of the restaurant, so it came as a surprise to see how much more seating was revealed! Craving something soupy, I got a Tom Yum Noodle. The creamy tom yum was hearty and paired with chewy rice noodles, shrimps, chicken, half a boiled egg, sprinkled with peanuts, cilantro, and served with a lime. I ordered a spice level 3 and it was the perfect ratio of spicy to soup. I thought every bite was full of flavor and so heartwarming especially on these chilly days we've been experiencing. I also had some Pad Thai. Theirs was more heavy on the tamarind making it more red, for a mild flavor. It was more saucier than I prefer, but the portions were generous. The service is efficient but took awhile for the soup! Overall, I do think Koon Thai is a strong contender for Thai food here in SD! Their menu is extensive but the dishes are great quality. Our lunch specials (available weekdays 11 am - 3 pm, holidays excepted) - she got Pad Thai w/ Tofu while I opted for Pad See Ew w/ Beef - were well-portioned and well-prepared, except for her side salad which had way too much dressing on it. My friend comes here religiously so I joined him to see what he was talking about and wow! Just amazing. We've been here twice so far and the food has been stellar. His go to is the soft shell crab pad Thai. I experimented a little with the tom yum noodle crispy pork- thank you for having actual roasted crispy pork and not the twice deep fried version that I find at most restaurants. Their cashew nut stir fry is excellent as well, i got this with tofu and it absorbed the flavors nicely. Be warned that this is a true Thai spicy, a 7 was just about the limit I could hit and still keep my tastebuds. The decor of this restaurant is gorgeous and very picture worthy. The yelp reservation system is super convenient and if you're waiting in the lobby they offer free shrimp crackers while you wait Now on to the fattest thing I've ever done. This restaurant offers a coconut dessert that is off the menu. It is the most fabulous thing I've ever tried, but to get it you have to call a day in advance to pre-order as the chef wants to preserve it at peak flavor. We messed this up the first time and got mango cake, which is delicious in its own right, but the second time I set a calendar reminder 24 hours before my reservation to call it's totally worth it. The coconut is huge and good for 2 people, but if you really believe in yourself like me you can finish a whole one. It's got everything - coconut, white cake, crème, and pirouette wafers. I wish they gave more though for the price. The lunch special is good, they give less than a full portion but they include a salad with peanut sauce so be careful if you have a peanut allergy. We also tried the garlic truffle ribeye which they say is one of their best items but I prefer their more typical dishes. One of my favorite Thai restaurant in San Diego. They always have fast and friendly service and a rad decor inside the restaurant. They have numerous northern and southern Thai food options. One of my favorite item is the Khao Soi curry noodles. Which comes with come crispy noodles on top and lime/mustard green on the side. It's definitely not something you would be able to get at a typically Thai place that only does pad Thai and pad see ew. Not knocking on those spots but this is a great change up. I had a mostly positive experience overall though there were a few things that made it feel a bit less enjoyable than I expected. I'd be open to coming back again in the future to give it another try! I joined the Yelp waitlist and was seated within about five minutes which was very quick considering it was a Saturday. since there wasn't anyone at the front, it was a little unclear where to go once I received the text that our table was ready. A bit more guidance at the entrance might help make the process smoother for guests or having a host to greet staff in the front would be nice. After being seated, the music felt quite loud, which made the space a little overstimulating and conversations difficult. This may just come down to personal preference, but slightly lowering the volume or choosing softer music could make the dining more comfortable. Personally didn't enjoy the TikTok themed music blasting when I was eating. Not a very romantic date setting but a good spot for friends and families. The staff was very friendly and attentive, which I really appreciated. We ordered the chicken wings, pad see ew, and lard salad. everything was flavorful and nicely spiced. One of the wings I tried was cold on the inside, but once I let the staff know, they were quick to replace it with a hot batch. The pad see ew was my favorite dish. smoky, rich, and full of flavor. Portions were generous as well, so I definitely left super full. Parking: 6/10 Parking can be a bit challenging when Convoy is busy so coming earlier is recommended so you don't fight for a spot! I met a friend for dinner at Koon Thai on Sunday evening. When we arrived the restaurant was half filled, but filled up quickly afterwards. I was on Koon's website to check out food pics and noticed a notice bar on the website promoting their happy hour. I was excited since we were there at the right time. I didn't see any signage so asked the waiter. He said the promotion had been discontinued. We asked if he would check with his manager. The manager was kind and allowed us to take advance of their discontinued special--that is great customer service! We ordered fried chicken wings, spring rolls, papaya salad, pad see ewe and tom yum noodle moo krob (only the appetizers were discounted). The portions were generous and the food was hit and full of flavor. The pad see ew and wings were the stand outs. My only complaint was we were seated at a small table so it was hard to eat. They should have timed the food to not come all at one time. Parking can be tough in the lot with narrow slots and a lot of other businesses sharing the space. Went during December and the inside was decorated very cute for Christmas. The food tho was amazing. They had so many options of great thai food from the classics such as Pad Thai and the currys, so street thai food. My boyfriend and I wanted to try something new so we tried the street thai food. We started off with some thai tea which was refreshing and strong. Got an appetizer, the shrimp wrapped in egg noodles, Goong Sarong. The shrimp was sweet at the noodles were such a good texture combined with the yummy sauce. We then tried the khao karr moo which the meat was soooo tender and the sauce was super flavorful and yummy on the rice. We also got the khao soi kai, curry noodles and even though we got no spice, there was still a slight kick so keep that in mind when choosing spice levels. This is my favorite Thai restaurant in San Diego County. My husband and I have been regulars for 12 years. What's not to love? Authentic flavors, diverse menu, gorgeous atmopshere, and always good service. They also have a rewards program that's generous! Feels like I'm always getting a $10 reward. We've never had a bad item from the menu. Our favorites are the pad kee mao, pad see ew, crab fried rice, ribeye, and their panang curry. The spice level is authentic here, but we're spice lovers so we always get the extra 4 spices that you can have on the side - pickled jalapenos, spice powder, chili sauce, and fish sauce with bird's eye chilis. The only feedback I can offer is regarding their fresh rolls - they could be tighter and have a bit more protein, but the flavors and sauce that come with it are still delish! The interior is always clean and it's well decorated and has a romantic, glowing lighting. The only downside is that the secret is out! This place can get packed and there's very little seating when you're stuck waiting and the noise carries when the restaurant is full.
