I don't usually leave reviews, but I wanted to share my experience dining here with my family. The evening started off great. The staff was friendly when we arrived, we were seated quickly, received our drinks promptly, and our food came out fast. The music was enjoyable, the ambiance was nice, and the restaurant had a modern, welcoming feel. Most importantly, the food was excellent. Everything we ordered was delicious, and my kids couldn't stop talking about the crispy pork belly. Honestly, the food itself was 5-star quality. The issue was what happened as the restaurant approached closing time. About 10-15 minutes after we started eating, a staff member brought our check and asked us to pay even though we were still waiting on two mango sticky rice desserts that had not yet been served. I politely explained that we hadn't received all of our food yet, so it didn't make sense to close out the bill. The desserts were brought out shortly afterward. A different employee then returned and again asked us to close out the check, assuring us that we could continue eating while they finished closing. Although I was hesitant, I paid and explained that I would leave a cash tip after we finished since we were still dining. Unfortunately, from that point on, the service noticeably changed. No one checked on our table, our water glasses were never refilled, and the staff seemed focused on cleaning around us. The booth behind us was being cleaned very loudly while we were still trying to enjoy our meal. It made us feel rushed and unwelcome, and honestly took away from an otherwise great dinner. When I asked for containers for our leftovers, the interaction felt cold and standoffish compared to the friendly service we received earlier in the evening. My suggestion would be that if the restaurant is close to closing and doesn't want guests dining in, they should clearly communicate that and switch to takeout only. The food was genuinely delicious, and I would come back again--but not near closing time. Great food, disappointing end to the evening. read more

We had a wonderful experience here; walking in, the beautiful decor instantly transports you to a Southeast Asia vibe. The servers were all incredibly friendly and greeted us with genuine smiles, which really set a great tone for the meal. ​For starters, we ordered the fried pork appetizer and the spring rolls. I didn't really care for the pork pieces, but they had a light crispy coating and was moist. However, I felt like it lacked any distinct marinated flavor to it. The spring rolls were excellent. They came out piping hot and very crispy, with a really nice crunchy and chewy texture on the inside. The filling had glass noodles, but instead of being soft, they had a great bite to them--almost like a pancit-style chew. ​The Pad Thai was easily my favorite dish of the night. The noodles had that perfect chewy texture, and the flavor and spice level were spot on. We ordered a level 6 spice with chicken, which gave it just the right amount of kick to enjoy. I did have to drink multiple glasses of water, but it was absolutely worth it. The chicken itself wasn't dry at all and was very enjoyable. ​We also tried the ISsan Wonder, which comes with papaya salad, beef jerky, wonton chips, and sticky rice. It was a little confusing to eat together, but it was still nice to try a sample of multiple items. The standout on this platter was definitely the papaya salad. ​Overall, I really enjoyed my time here. They give you very generous portions for the price, and the hospitality is top-notch. Classic convoy staple that we have been going to throughout the years. The atmosphere is cute with very nice little decoration throughout the restaurant. Got pad kee mao (8 spicy, which was decently tolerable, I would consider getting more if you are preferring more hissing spicy). Papaya salad is a solid classic. Would recommend. Their pa nang curry was really yummy and had a strong kick so you will really feel that spice. Server was attentive, checking in on us to see if we needed anything. The Khao Soi noodles were too soft for our liking, and the chicken was dry. The coconut milk was very forward tasting, and the broth carried the dish. The Pad Thai was more sour than flavorful, which I hadn't ever experienced at this place before. I usually always like the Pad Thai here; maybe it was an off day? Walked in for dinner because the place we originally wanted to go was busy. We were sat immediately and I was shocked at how beautiful the interior was! I've seen this place advertised on DoorDash but I was not expecting it to be decorated the way it was. Our server was very quick in getting our order and the food came out very fast! We ordered the rangoons, pad thai, and drunken noodles. Everything was delicious and the portion sizes were huge! The only downside was that I ordered a strawberry lemonade cocktail and it didn't have a lot of alcohol so that was a bit disappointing. We were there at lunch time on Friday and ordered tom yum noodles and bento box of the day (the protein changes each day, but it also comes with half hard boiled egg, rice, vegetable curry, and pad thai. Since it was a Friday, we had Kraprao Kai (ground chicken with basil) as the protein. It was a good assortment to try various items, and every item was tasty. The service was polite and timely. Stopped by Koon Thai after almost a decade and was pleasantly surprised to see that it had been remodeled or redecorated. The inside is now a lot prettier than I remembered, with colorful lights and lanterns. We sat down and were promptly attended to. For food we ordered the beef jerky, eggplant with beef and chicken larb. The food arrived within minutes and was fresh and hot. The beef jerky was thin strips of beef that were well cooked but still tender, accompanied by a sour chilly sauce to dip into. The eggplant with beef was also delicious, with a lot of beef slices and eggplant, very flavorful and just the right spice level at 6. The chicken larb was also delicious, though not as limey as some places. Overall it was a decent spot for Thai food and they give you a lot of choices. read more

Finally stopped into this cute spot on Convoy after walking past it so many times! The interior is charming, but the experience was a bit of a mixed bag. We arrived around 8:00 PM, and even though the restaurant wasn't full, it took quite a while for us to be seated. It felt a bit odd since there was no line, though they do close at 9:00 PM. What we ordered: The Steak Salad was delicious - the apple slices added a perfect, crisp sweetness. The Pad See Ew with chicken was easily my favorite dish of the night. The Tom Yum Noodle Soup was just okay - I really wish it had vegetables to round it out. My friend also found the Thai Tea to be a bit too sweet for her taste. We asked for "Medium" spice level for everything, but it all came out spice-less. Having to add our own chili at the table definitely took away from the flavor profile. The staff began cleaning around us while we were still eating, which made the end of the meal feel a little rushed. We eventually headed out around 9:30 PM. Came on a Wednesday evening and did not have to wait at all. The service was amazing and informative of all the dishes. We settled on the Chiang Mai Steak Khao Soi, Crab Fried Rice, and Cream Cheese rangoon. The steak in the khao soi was a little tough and chewy but the noodles and soup itself was amazing. The crab fried rice was great, you can definitely taste the crab meat in the dish and it paired nicely when also eaten with the khao soi soup. Koon Thai is one of the better Thai restaurants in the area. Location wise - this is in one of the busiest plazas, so plan accordingly if you don't want to wait a ridiculously long time for dinner. Anyone that says theres plenty of parking hasn't been here during a weekend evening often enough and it shows. They do use yelp for reservations, so keep that in mind The aesthetic and vibe is bright, vibrant, and smells hella good once you get inside. It can seem a bit cramped, but it is quite accessible - my dad is in a scooter so they were able to accommodate despite it being such a busy place. The food always hits, even if its basic pad thai. Ive never had a complaint for their food quality. So definitely try everything on the menu, it has been quite consistent. Portions are huge, basically had a whole other meal for a midnight snack. read more

For a great lunch deal meal, you have to try the Koon Bento (Friday) special! Pretty good value for $18.95 for the amount of food you get. I ordered the bento box featuring the Kraprao Kai (minced basil chicken). Everything was wonderfully neutral on the heat scale, not specifically spicy hot, but packed with deep, robust flavors. The basil chicken was savory and aromatic, that works well with the jasmine rice and hard-boiled egg. The side portions of classic Pad Thai and the rich yellow vegetable curry were both outstanding and full of flavor. It is a sizable and satisfying meal and an excellent value for a lunch spot. Had it with Thai ice tea, which you can almost never go wrong with. The restaurant itself has a super friendly atmosphere, and it was obviously popular and buzzing with life during the lunch rush. Their noodles are always on point, the pad thai and pad see ew come out super saucy (just how I like it) and packed with flavor every time. The tom yum soup is also a must, and honestly you can't really go wrong with anything on the menu. Thai tea is solid too. The staff is always friendly and quick, which I appreciate. Parking is pretty manageable during off hours, but it can get a little hectic during lunch since that plaza gets busy. The space itself feels really nice, kind of elevated and cute. I think I came on an off day because the food was alright but the service... yeah that part was rough. I've honestly had better hospitality from understaffed fast food spots during a rush, just to give you an idea. I made reservations just in case but it wasn't busy so we were seated right away. The host was very sweet which gave me hope, but everyone else did not match that energy. The menu is fun though, bright, colorful, and packed with options. It was a little overwhelming because everything sounded good, so we ordered a few dishes to try a variety. It didn't take us long to decide, but when our server came over to drop off water and sharing plates, she assumed "you guys need more time huh." We said no, we're ready, but she walked away anyway. That already threw the vibe off. When she came back, asking about spice levels somehow turned into a whole situation. We have only ever been to other Thai restaurants that offer a 0-10 scale, so sorry we didn't know Koon Thai was different!! A little explanation for new guests seems reasonable to me. She said level 5 is "mild," which felt high, so I asked for a 3 and she responded with "we only have 5." It was confusing and honestly way more complicated than it needed to be. Food came out fairly quick but not together. One person asked for chili sauce, the food runner nodded and never came back, so we had to flag him down again. Not a busy night either, so not sure what that was about. Som Tum Thai (Papaya Salad) Chopped green papaya with green beans, tomatoes, peanut dressing This was actually one of the better dishes. Tangy, fresh, and I liked the garlic flavor. It had a nice balance and didn't feel heavy. Yum Pla Todd (Whole Fried Fish) Crispy fried whole fish with spicy lime dressing, apple, herbs, and peanuts The presentation was beautiful, but the flavor leaned way too sweet. It almost tasted like fish with a lemonade sauce. The apple herb salad on top was refreshing though and helped balance it a bit. Pad Kee Mao (Spicy Noodles with Beef) Wide rice noodles stir fried with bell peppers and basil This had good flavor and a really large portion. The downside was the beef, it was very dry and had that grey beige look which kind of threw me off. Kraprao Moo Krob (Crispy Pork Belly with Basil and Rice) Crispy pork belly with basil served over jasmine rice It was salty and dry, and some pieces weren't even crispy, just soft fat that didn't look appetizing. Almost like someone chewed up a piece and spit onto our plate. I did like the fresh basil though. We came here to celebrate a birthday so I really wanted it to be a good dinner, but we left pretty disappointed. I get that off days happen, but based on this visit, I'd probably go somewhere else. read more

Everything here was a 10/10, but my favorite bite had to be the mango sticky rice. It truly was the BEST MSR I've ever had in my life... The mangos were perfectly ripe, the rice was so soft and just melted in your mouth, and the coconut cream adds an amazing richness and nuttiness to the dish. I haven't been to Koon Thai since 2019, and coming back they seemed to have revamped the menu. For some reason I've never sat on the left hand side of the restaurant, so it came as a surprise to see how much more seating was revealed! Craving something soupy, I got a Tom Yum Noodle. The creamy tom yum was hearty and paired with chewy rice noodles, shrimps, chicken, half a boiled egg, sprinkled with peanuts, cilantro, and served with a lime. I ordered a spice level 3 and it was the perfect ratio of spicy to soup. I thought every bite was full of flavor and so heartwarming especially on these chilly days we've been experiencing. I also had some Pad Thai. Theirs was more heavy on the tamarind making it more red, for a mild flavor. It was more saucier than I prefer, but the portions were generous. The service is efficient but took awhile for the soup! Overall, I do think Koon Thai is a strong contender for Thai food here in SD! Their menu is extensive but the dishes are great quality.
