We came on…read morea day trip and this is the first time I have traversed Kansas without a cooler and ice packs when I actually needed it! The owner Becky was so knowledgeable about all things cheese, meat, and gourmet treats (and moved to Emporia from New Jersey)! We got to sample a lot of different things, left to explore, and returned before closing to buy our goods. She provided us a cooler and we bought a small bag of ice down the street. There are pestos, tapenades, jarred beets, and other interesting items on the shelves. There is a frozen case with locally raised meat. Yet the star of the show is the case in the center, with cheeses and charcuterie galore! The menu organizes the cheeses by blue, single serving cheeses, soft, semi-soft, firm, and hard. There is a large list of salamis and then whole muscle meats. There were two items I was interested in that were sold out, the duck prosciutto and the queijo toledo. I will have to make my way back! I ended up buying from the single serving cheese a truffle chevre (which I had tonight with fennel, it was amazing), petit basque (my friend Melinda C. asked for a sample and we were all blown away by it), Saxonshires (five cheddars layered in colorful stripes: Double Gloucester, Chesire, Caerphilly, Leicester, and cheddar), and bresaola (salted, air-dried Italian beef that I usually have to get at Dean and Deluca in KC). Melinda C. bought the bay blue and chevrelait (smoked goat) besides a few of the same ones I got. We both are so excited that tomorrow we are having a bread-cheese-cured beef smorgasbord for dinner! Bring your cooler bag and ice packs to Emporia because this place is a must-stop (and has really cute decor too)!

I have been coming here since I was a kid, and the doughnuts and cookies are fabulous! Unfortunately, she has lost this loyal customer, due to her (the owner) being incredibly rude to my daughter. Yes, I have heard the excuses "she's just not a people person", or, "she has always been that way".... Blah blah.. UNACCEPTABLE! Your customers are your bread and butter, they can make or break your business! She needs to change her attitude soon, or she will lose more customers... Online it said they offer grab and go cakes but no guarantees so I tried to call the number listed to ask ahead of time. No answer. I was calling within business hours. I decided to just drop in. The place is adorable with an amazing outdoor seating area and great seating inside. They had a good sized lunch crowd. I went straight to the bakery counter. No full cakes. They had like 3/4 of a Halloween cake being sold piece by piece. The date was 11/2. I asked someone about cakes and all she said was "not today". They had adorable little personal cheesecakes but at $7 a pop- not something I could get for my mom's Birthday. She didn't try to offer me a solid price for the 3/4 cake that was clearly a few days old. You'd think they would want it out the door. I ended up leaving with nothing and settling for the Hyvee bakery. Leaving was a bit of a mess. The parking lot is crazy confusing and I was forced to exit out of an area that said entrance only. The only other way out of the lot was between buildings and it was blocked. I'm guessing this is a great place. Just not for me on this day.

Our waitress was super friendly as were all the staff I interacted with during my visit. Everyone seemed genuinely happy to be there and wanted us to have a great experience. I was very pleasantly surprised by that. The restaurant itself was pretty plain, but clean. The focus is definitely on their food and service. I had the special of the day, which was a chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, and a house made roll for like $10. It was delicious. Everything on the plate seemed made in house, and the roll was hot out of the oven. Their pie case was filled with house made pies, so I had to have a slice. I got raspberry cream, which isn't one I see very often, but do like a lot. It was excellent as expected. By the checkout they had pies, chicken pot pies, bread, and other things to go which also looked amazing. This one is definitely worth going out of your way to try!

Every day they're open, you can get thick cut deli sandwiches on fresh bread (try the sunflower rolls). There are also daily specials like tater tot casserole and lasagna. I've had everything they make and it's never disappointed. Also, last week I had a wedding in Humboldt and got to try out their cakes. Stacy worked with me, sending prompt, clear messages as soon as I reached out. She went out of her way to provide exactly what we wanted, including a special baby gender reveal on one of the cakes (pink on the inside). The price is great and everything looked/tasted perfect. These are great people, and their business has been a wonderful addition to Humboldt.
