Okay, here I sit, reviewing a road with a very peculiar name. I grew up in the southern California…read moredesert just north of Joshua Tree, and this sign is one that has always caught my attention while traveling to Vegas. I've actually watched a show that talked about the history of it, but I won't go into that in this review. I'm simply going to give this sign, and road for that matter, a 5 star rating. The name "Zzyzx" is certainly one that turn heads and has gained more popularity over the years due to the amazing thing called social media. As a child driving in the back seat of my parent's station wagon, I never would have thought to take a picture with this sign. But it actually makes me happy to see that so many people take the same liking to it as I always have. If you are traveling on Interstate 15 between Barstow and Las Vegas and see this sign, which you will, do yourself a favor. Pull over, get out of your vehicle, and snap a picture in front of it. Everyone should have at least one picture with the now famous Zzyzx sign.

I've come back for visits sporadically in the years since I first ventured down this road. Every time I've come here, I found the eerie experience, a solitude that is almost impossible to find in a major city. The solitude is ended when you run into a staff member here, which I've always encountered every time I've visited. From what I gather, the place is safe place to visit... let's keep it that way. Every time I drove down Zzyzx Road, and walked the area at its end, I've never had issues at all. I have indeed come across staff here in every visit, and they had no issue with me whatsoever. Some were friendly, and chatted with me for a bit. They never gave any indication that I was tresspassing, nor did they prohibit me at all from walking around the area. I did ask every time, and every time I was given the OK. There weren't any signs indicating that this place is off limits to the public. Maybe that has changed recently, but there were no such signs or any indications the few times I went there. I last travelled down Zzyzx Road five years ago or so. In reponse to Anne K (the business owner): You picked my review out of many to make this false allegation, despite the fact that plenty of other reviews describe similar experiences. If I was trespassing and committing crimes, then why didn't your staff members have an issue with me? Every time I visited Zzyzx Road, I came across one of your staff members. They were friendly, curteous, and didn't give a single indication that I was doing anything wrong. Also, there were no signs posted that the area was off-limits to the public. If what you say is true, then your staff members could have called law enforcement. Why didn't they do that? It seems that you're cherry picking my review, for motives that are unclear. If you have any issues to report, give the bureau a call (Long Beach Resident Agency). They, above all, should be able to determine who is right or wrong. 2nd response to Anne K (the business owner): I'm not "the most recent review with the most photos." I re-uploaded my photos and updated my review AFTER you left a reply to my original review. My original photos were posted back in 2015. You say that you responded because you were concerned about people "wanting to recreate my photos." If that was true, you would have responded to a more recent review, not my review (which was posted on 2015). Also, you came out making false allegations, claiming that I was illegally trespassing. I stand by what I said. Your staff never indicated any wrongdoing on my part. And back in 2015, there were no signs indicating these areas as closed to the public. Committing defamation is not the way to deal with concerns of trespassing and vandalism. Get it together, Anne.

To find this hidden gem, take I-15 to Zzyx Road in the Southeastern direction (the wrong side of the highway deadends after about 1/4 mile, so don't worry). Keep driving, even when the pavement briefly ends after 4 miles or so. You'll see a weird Gilligans Island-style oasis creep up over the horizon. And bam, you're there! Try to go during the cooler months -- it can get up to 130F in the summer. All those abandoned buildings are a dream for photogs!

Like I said in my tip, don't come in with any expectations…read more I'm one of those people who truly believe that your mindset will determine your experience. Yes, the base is extremely isolated, if you don't already know that then now you know. You either deal with what you have on post or you drive down the Fort Irwin Road speedway to get to where you need to go. We always opt for the latter. The schools on base are great! I can tell how much my children's teachers love teaching, especially if they're willing to make the drive out here. I've felt welcomed in their classrooms and on their campuses. The middle school sports program at Fort Irwin Middle school has been surprisingly competitive. My 6th grade daughter has played for both their volleyball and basketball team and we've loved making the drive out to watch them play at away games. The housing isn't the best we've lived in, but we've lucked out again with being placed in newer housing with less issues. I recommend for anyone PCSing over to make sure you video tape and photograph any discrepancies with your home and submit that with your list to housing. Also, invest in a ring doorbell. I haven't really had any issues with our food establishments, but then again we do more cooking at home and my kids are easy to please with the selection here. If I had to choose to eat out I'd go to Smoothie n Things and the bowling alley before anywhere else. Getting visitors on base is easy if you follow procedures. You can send in the visitor pass request early and your guests can do all the waiting at the gate without needing you to drive up to accompany them on. From what I understand they cannot clear backgrounds until they arrive, so they should expect a wait for their clearance. Want to not be a "lack for better and appropriate word" at the gate? Then dim your lights, roll down all driver's side windows, have your identification ready and be prepared to open your trunk if requested when entering the gate. Don't fight security procedures. Don't play Pokémon go? Well now's the time to start. You're either a gym rat or a Pokémon go geek. Join the darkside!

Most people only know about Seven Magic Mountains, but I think this place deserves way more…read morerecognition. It shares the same exit as Eddie's World, and you can easily spot it from the road. The entrance on Yermo Road makes it simple to drive through; unless you want to go off road, it does look like you can enter. Enter the park from across the Eddie's World because it does not seem like there is a fence .you can see the sculptures up close without even leaving your car. Many of the artworks feature well-known figures who fought for freedom in China, with banners and art installations lining both sides of the road. One of the most striking pieces is a sculpture assembled the movie 28 years later with skulls piled like a tower--a haunting reminder of those lost. I only recently discovered the park through social media, even though it's been around since 2017. When we visited, it was quiet--just one other car stopped for a quick look before driving off. Some sculptures have unfortunately been vandalized by people who disagree with their message, but that only underscores the importance of this place. If you're driving from Los Angeles to Vegas, definitely stop by and take a few photos. It's a powerful, thought-provoking stop that helps keep awareness of China's human rights crimes alive.
