Not a great duty assignment for those who are sent here for their first assignment. It's not because of the location, which is bleak since you're deep in the high desert. The location is tolerable because you're 2 hours away from Los Angeles and San Diego and Vegas and just a little farther away from other great cities. If you're into rock climbing and off roading, you're not too far from where you want to be. The OPTEMPO can be incredibly difficult with many hours and days spent from your families. The Installation does what it can to make it comfortable. There is a town center with a Bar and Grill, Starbucks other fast food restaurants. Other bars and restaurants are Shockwave. No matter how much they improve the garrison areas, you're in the middle of the high desert. The sun and heat are relentless and sandy high winds are frequent. It's a great post to save money as little is spent on gas for those who lice on post and you're too far away from nearby towns to get distracted and spend your money. The best part of this post is leaving it to see other parts of California or Nevada. Command climate overall is atrocious here.

    Very pretty butter bar!

"Box Tour" today, really great! They do it twice per month, you email or call for reservations, and get on the list. Meet up at 9:30 am, and they bus you out to the Box, short for sandbox, where the do incredibly realistic training, and people on the box tour get to watch. There were maybe 10 of us on the tour today. We were briefed by a light colonel filling in for the commanding general, and squired around by a couple of captains, a command sgt major, an 11th ACR lt colonel, and other folks. They do a great job, no charge, and you get to see, close up, how our young men and women are prepared for deployment and combat. Not for the feint of heart.....lots of bombs and bullets.

Bronco belt buckle awarded for finding points in the desert and doing service project.

There is a method to the madness. Sometimes it may not seem to come from Army doctrine but it is a very complex operating environment that NTC replicates for the rotational training units. I learned from my time here as an OC/T and I hope I shared my lessons learned with the Civil Affairs units I worked with. Be ready to embrace the suck. This is what it is like being in the Army. If you can endure the misery, you will emerge a better Person.

Just near Eddy's world and just drivable area. No personnel or security so come at your own risk…read more No service is there but it's great to see interesting landmark.

Most people only know about Seven Magic Mountains, but I think this place deserves way more…read morerecognition. It shares the same exit as Eddie's World, and you can easily spot it from the road. The entrance on Yermo Road makes it simple to drive through; unless you want to go off road, it does look like you can enter. Enter the park from across the Eddie's World because it does not seem like there is a fence .you can see the sculptures up close without even leaving your car. Many of the artworks feature well-known figures who fought for freedom in China, with banners and art installations lining both sides of the road. One of the most striking pieces is a sculpture assembled the movie 28 years later with skulls piled like a tower--a haunting reminder of those lost. I only recently discovered the park through social media, even though it's been around since 2017. When we visited, it was quiet--just one other car stopped for a quick look before driving off. Some sculptures have unfortunately been vandalized by people who disagree with their message, but that only underscores the importance of this place. If you're driving from Los Angeles to Vegas, definitely stop by and take a few photos. It's a powerful, thought-provoking stop that helps keep awareness of China's human rights crimes alive.

Though this site gives some amazing history about the pinnacles I would not have known otherwise,…read morethe road to get here is very long, very rocky and in some places questionable if I should cross them. It was extremely hot even though it's April. I didn't walk around as the temps too high. The highlights - you cross over where the salt has dried from the lake ( wash your car as soon as you can as salt bad for it!), the beautiful scenery of the pinnacles (obviously) but the mountains behind them, the history lesson, the train cars sitting on the tracks was kinda fun and interesting and best of all the Navy flying planes doing test runs. Loved that. So hard to believe so much of this was under water and that where these were created. It's other worldly with how alive our planet is and constantly changing. It's free to come here but be warned about deep sand, very rocky roads and the heat. Bring water and have plenty of gas in the tank. There's nothing around for quite a ways.

Out of this world! Free admission but make sure the roads are in good shape. I drove out in an SUV…read moreand some parts of the road were a little sketchy. Once you arrive at the Pinnacles, you can hike up really close to see them first-hand. The pinnacles were created out of tufa ("porous rock formed as a deposit when springs interact with other bodies of water" per Wikipedia), when the area was under a lake. If you visit in spring, you'll see some wildflowers as well. Very interesting spot and worth a stop on your way to Death Valley. Highly recommended!
